Welcome to Sharjah

Opening Message

This fourth edition of the official magazine of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority highlights the emirate as a unique tourist destination. Future issues of the quarterly magazine will continue to tell Sharjah’s magical story, to explore its secrets and share its treasures.

With various kinds of activities and events of a cultural, artistic and sporting nature throughout the year, Sharjah is recognised as the emirate of festivals.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this magazine, to Sharjah and to festival season in this magical emirate. The inaugural Sharjah Light Festival 2011 is set to be an extraordinary extravaganza of an event to equal the outstanding success of the recent Sharjah Water Festival 2010.

There are upcoming events to celebrate Sharjah’s diverse world-class attractions. Sharjah Heritage Days showcases the emirate’s rich traditions and role as a cultural capital of the Arab world, while Sharjah Biennial highlights the emirate’s position as an artistic hub, and shopping festivals demonstrate the more modern appeals of this dynamic destination.

We believe in the important role festivals play in promoting the emirate of Sharjah by showcasing its renowned heritage and great civilization. Festivals embody the best of human creativity and reflect the region’s identity, history, present and future.

By organizing the Sharjah Light Festival, Sharjah will not only join the list of major European cities and capitals that have hosted such events, but will also become the first city in the Middle East to host a light festival.

Sharjah leads the way in hosting premier international events. With dynamic entertainment throughout the year, Sharjah offers a year-long tourist season and is recognised as the emirate of festivals – a reputation it richly deserves.

SCTDA are bringing the concept of the ‘light festival’ to the Middle East for the first time. Although these festivals are very popular in continental Europe, nothing similar has previously been seen in this region. Light and computer animation are utilised in imaginative and fun ways to ‘demolish’ whole buildings, and ‘redraw’ and ‘redecorate’ them in the space of a few minutes. Sharjah’s shows will be supervised by international

experts with experience in organising similar, and hugely popular, festivals in Lyon, France and Berlin, Germany.

The exciting and unprecedented addition to Sharjah’s already exciting calendar has drawn huge interest from all across the region and wider world. The festival is set to be an incredible success, further strengthening Sharjah’s status as a prime international tourist destination.

To fit with the emirate’s motivation to spread the message of its unique and impressive tourist attractions to a wider audience, the illuminations will shed light on Sharjah’s stunning Islamic architecture, heritage attractions and modern marvels.

The festival is to be hosted at 12 locations across the emirate.

There will be captivating light projections onto key buildings. The Central Souk, Cultural Palace Square and the large façade of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be home to music and video creations; as will the two mosques of Al Maghfira and Al Noor and all six government department buildings in the Al Khan area will be synchronised as one changing image.

Outside spaces will be transformed. At Al Majaz Park the fantastic work of the famed artistic group TILT will change the park into a magical garden; while Palm Oasis will be given over to the fashion academy.

The heritage story will be told with displays at Sharjah Hisn and at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization which will display its inside attractions on

For nine bright, colourful and exciting nights, Sharjah will be illuminated in a blaze of glory. The Sharjah Light Festival is a unique event in the region, celebrating the art of drawing with light. Light combined with captivating music will create an exhilarating experience, turning the city into an exciting piece of art. The dramatic music and lighting projections will highlight Sharjah’s historic legacy and illuminate its landmark buildings and attractions.

the outside. The Heritage Area and Arts Area will display photographs of smiling faces and be taken over by the great French theatre company, Premier Act.

At Al Qasba an installation will create a water effect along the canal with a video screen at the centre and a lighting ambiance that will invoke the peaceful atmosphere of a splendid palace such as Spain’s Alhambra. The external façade of Al Qasba will become a large screen movie animation. It will truly be an entertainment extravaganza.

Sharjah was the platform for a groundbreaking surprise as the patented Caudwell Marine Axis-Drive petrol engine was unveiled. The newly designed engine ushers in the dawn of a new era for F1 powerboat racing as the cutting-edge technology is expected to bring about a breakthrough in F1 powerboats on a global scale in 2011.

Teams are expected to discover increased speed, vastly improved handling, and lower emissions created by this quantum leap in engine design and development – a giant stride forward for F1H2O. During test runs an amazing 142mph was reached (an unofficial South African water speed record) and at the upper performance limit the engine has shown that it can easily exceed this speed.

Mohamed A. Al Noman, SCTDA Director General and Head of the Organizing Committee of the 2010 Sharjah Grand Prix and the SWF 2010, commented,

“The new engine heralds the dawn of a new era for F1 powerboat racing, and we in Sharjah are very proud that the announcement of such a global achievement was made here.”

As well as the Driver World Championship, his Mad Croc Team celebrated a rare hat-trick of titles with the Team Championship and Rookie-Of-The-Year Championship for team mate Alex Carella as the Italian came home in third place to seal third in the championship as well. The actual race was won by Ahmed Al Hamili, winning for the first time in his home country and taking his second victory of the season and the third of his career in his BABA Team Abu Dhabi boat.

The greatly anticipated sporting event took place on 8 and 9 December at

Sharjah Water Festival 2011will include UAE National Day celebrations and the Sharjah Grand Prix in December 2011.

Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA), said that the success achieved in organising the events would not have been possible without the noble directives of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and the generous patronage of Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.

“I would like to dedicate the milestone achievement to H.H. Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in appreciation of the major support he offered to the event. It is to this support that we directly attribute the success of the event.” he stated.

“We are fully aware of the importance – and the unprecedented popularity – of the Sharjah Water Festival. This year’s success will encourage all to exert further efforts with the aim to achieve further triumphs for this prestigious event over the coming years,” he said.

Year after year, the Sharjah Water Festival becomes more exciting and more popular, attracting over 200,000 visitors to its multitude of activities and shows, bringing in scores of families to its innovative ideas and concepts for educational and entertaining family fun.

Coinciding with the UAE’s celebration of its 39th National Day, the iconic event started with a great big splash. The “Waves of Fun” theme saw a vast array of water-themed shows and entertaining activities, as well as the final round of the

Formula 1 Powerboat World Championships taking place in the emirate for the 11th consecutive time.

The festival significantly contributes to further enhancing the emirate’s position as a tourism destination of choice for families and perfectly reflects the emirate’s traditional love for the sea, which bears the memories of the nation’s forefathers and ancestors, and depicts the success of the country’s generations throughout history.

There were entertaining activities including water and acrobatic shows by a number of world-renowned acrobatic troupes to boost the appeal of

the festival to all age groups. The activities also included the renowned Aga Boom troupe’s theatre of physical comedy and circus arts and the celebrated Sinbad diving show. With a slightly more sedate entertainment, the heritage village was busy throughout; while the children’s play area and children’s shows and games at Mouj Island were always hugely popular. The overall atmosphere was of a fantastic and fun carnival for all the family.

The prestigious world-class events, the Sharjah Water Festival 2010 and the UIM F1 H2O World Championship 2010, Sharjah Grand Prix, were outstanding successes for Sharjah.

Heritage & CultureHeritage & Culture - Al Mahatta & Maritime Museums

Home to the region’s first airport and for long to its largest port, Sharjah has always had a central role to play in the region’s history.

On Saturday 1st October 1932 all the world was obsessed with airplanes and all things new and futuristic. Amelia Earhart had just flown across the Atlantic Ocean and a very significant flight for the Middle East was about to take off from London. 1932 was the time of Gandhi, Roosevelt and Hitler. Tarzan The Ape Man was playing at movie theatres around the world, Aldous Huxley’s Brave

New World had just been published and the very first Mars Bars were being sold. In London that Saturday all the talk was of whether Chelsea could beat Aston Villa who were topping the football league. Just to the southeast of the city Imperial Airways’ first flight to Sharjah was readied.

It took a relay journey of planes and trains but six days later, on Friday 7th October

1932, Imperial Airways flight IE184 approached Sharjah. It had been an eventful journey, stopping every 500 kilometres or so to refuel or change planes. The flight had arrived in Basra to historic scenes, being just a couple of days after Iraq had gained independence from Britain on 3rd October. Then early on the morning of Friday 7th October, flight IE184 had left Basra to continue its long London-Karachi journey. The Handley Page HP42 long-range biplane airliner stopped in Bahrain for lunch before heading on along the Gulf coast, east then north, to Sharjah.

The first airliner to land in the UAE would have felt a historic occasion to passengers and welcoming locals alike. Sharjah warmly welcomed the exciting new arrivals - and celebrated the foresight and intelligence of their ruler to have positioned the emirate

as such a crucial international transport hub. The passengers, all dressed up in European aristocratic finery, would have marvelled at the welcome and the fascinating scenes.

The dhows which those passengers would have seen busy in the waters of Sharjah’s creek and lagoons were signifiers of a much longer-standing role as a transport hub. Sharjah then, as now and as through all its history, had a key role in facilitating trade through the region and wider world.

The story of those dhows and that important and influential maritime trade is told vividly at the Sharjah Maritime Museum, on the site of the old fishing village at the entrance to Al Khan lagoon. Restored dhows, authentic artefacts and models of the full range of vessels give a better understanding of the differing demands of fishing, trading and pearling. It is a great setting to enjoy and get excited by Sharjah’s rich maritime heritage.

The full and fascinating story of Sharjah’s role as the region’s first and foremost air transport hub is told at the Al Mahatta Museum in the heart of the city. The museum is on the site of that first airfield and in fact the original runway has been incorporated into the city’s street system. Restored original propeller planes and some unmissable film footage bring to life those first flights from the 1930s when Sharjah was such an important stop-off point for flights like that IE184 from London to Karachi via Sharjah.

influences and associated aesthetics can be seen amongst the architecture outside. The surrounding Heritage Area is an angular labyrinth of serrated parapets and geometrical archways with timber supports jutting out high in the walls like expressive calligraphic flourishes. These restored buildings and passageways evoke Sharjah of old and conjure up an impression of an earlier way of life.

As the written markings of a proud and spiritual heritage, calligraphy is, and has always been, a central part of Islamic and Arabic culture. It is hardly surprising, given Sharjah’s position as a fulcrum of culture in the Arab world, that calligraphy and the calligraphic aesthetic seem part of the fabric

of the city. It is indeed only right that Sharjah is home to the region’s sole museum dedicated entirely to calligraphy.

The shared aesthetic of the Arabic language and arabesque architecture is a use of geometric forms that gather towards a collective beauty. Within the museum, the calligraphic beauty transcends to another level. This ancient art form, combining script with craftsmanship, excites spiritual understanding through its magical combination of poetry and visual art. A link to the spiritual world, Islamic calligraphy was an important means of conveying religious philosophies and instruction.

Calligraphies of all eras and from all corners of the Muslim world are gathered in the museum. Together they tell a crucial, and beautiful, history. Part of the rich Islamic tradition of learning, the disciplines of calligraphy have long been cherished and the devotion of calligraphers is renowned. Famous calligraphers are featured here and the intricacies of their work tell of diligent hours with ink, graduated pens and traditionalist teachers. Pupils have often been so highly practiced that their output has

Inside and outside the building, geometric shapes surround you – solid blocks, intricate patterns and sudden organic sweeps of light. Tucked into the atmospheric and ancient Heritage Area, the setting of the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum echoes with the same aesthetic as is celebrated within its venerable walls.

The art of calligraphy is explored so completely inside the museum that the

become indistinguishable from their masters. There is even legend of calligraphers, after losing a hand in punishment or battle, being able to produce

identical work with their other hand, or even writing by foot.

It is said to be such an involved process, the calligrapher’s art, as to be close to meditation. But there are rules and styles that are exactingly taught even today. There are geometric and cursive scripts and they vary from simple to highly stylised. The different styles were developed all across the Muslim world. Here in Sharjah the many styles come together and are impressive in their variation. From coins to papyrus, parchment and precious patterned silks they cover more than just canvas. All are impressive. From the small and personal to the large and epic they suitably celebrate the diversity of this art form and hold it up as a proud, exciting and important part of not just history but of the current renaissance of Arabic art too.

In its most modern forms, calligraphers often exhibit alongside graffiti artists and calligraphy is collected as an abstract art as well as a representational script. Its place in today’s art world is fascinating as it shows that the most traditional of practices can remain relevant and even become more so.

Fishing and boating trips are a great, fun way to explore Sharjah’s coastline – and to catch your own dinner.

Equestrianism in Sharjah embodies heritage, sport and generations of love for horse riding.

The Life Aquatic

A boat trip is an almost essential experience on any visit to Sharjah. Only from the sea can you begin to fully understand Sharjah’s maritime history and appreciate the truly impressive geography. Either setting out into the Arabian Gulf from Sharjah city, or from the east coast into the Gulf of Oman, from a boat you get impressive views of the emirate. You can

enjoy wonderful swimming and snorkelling, journey to hidden coves and quiet beaches, and make the most of fantastic fishing opportunities.

The best fishing and more adventurous exploring is to be had off the east coast. The waters of the Gulf of Oman are teeming with fish and are world-renowned for offering some excellent big-game fishing.

Typically, a fishing trip will depart either in early morning or late afternoon. Experienced captains will consider the conditions and select the best fishing spots. It is great fun and, if you are lucky, an incredibly exciting experience. Once back on dry land there is always an enthusiastic restaurant chef to cook up your catch for the freshest and most satisfying of holiday meals.

Of course if you are not so lucky there is the beautiful scenery to enjoy – and, to not miss out on the fresh fish, you can always go and see if any of the local fishermen have been more successful.

The Coast

The horse has long been central to the history of the region. The Arab horse is an extraordinary breed with an incredible capacity for stamina, able to travel great distances across desert terrain and at great pace. As if in memory of its important past, horsemanship is still a highly revered quality in Sharjah today. For long the fastest means to travel, generations of careful breeding have produced incredible bloodlines of these specialist creatures.

Nothing can compare with the power, beauty and agility of the Arab horse; and there is no better way to appreciate this than to go for a ride in the desert. Cantering across the dunescape is a wonderful and evocative experience that is special to this part of the world. Contact your hotel or tour operator to arrange an outing.

Education

Important Ports

American University of Sharjah

Throughout its history Sharjah has been famed as one of the most influential ports in the region and that influence is still strong.

One of the very top educational institutions in all the Middle East, American University Sharjah has been leading the way since 1997.

Sharjah’s key location has kept its ports busy for generations and they are busier than ever. The central west coast ports of Khalid and Hamriyah are crucial to the Arabian Gulf’s maritime trade while over on the east coast, Khor Fakkan provides an important solution for Indian Ocean traffic and is a strong alternative to entering the Arabian Gulf.

This unique capacity to provide a solution on both coasts offers Sharjah a strategic advantage. Allied with the impressive port infrastructure, efficient

The flagship facility of Sharjah’s University City, American University Sharjah (AUS) was founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. It has been consistently ranked among the top universities in the Middle East and has achieved impressive recognition from higher education commissions and associations from the USA.

The recognition of the standards of excellence at AUS are an important justification of all the investment of time and expertise into AUS. The accreditations are highly sought

after and respected but AUS has always put its students, their welfare and their education as first priority. Eminent professors, state-of-the-art facilities and a forward thinking mandate have combined to make the AUS undergraduate programmes vastly respected.

AUS is indeed famed for the rigour of its academic standards, but it is not all work for students of AUS. The campus has a full array of amenities including gyms, sports complex, health centre, pharmacy, dormitories, eateries and a bank.

The AUS Library boasts one of the most comprehensive collections of books, journals

and periodicals with fully digital online databases that can be accessed locally or remotely.

service has long been a priority and the investment in facilities has been matched by valuing management and employees.

Port Khalid in the heart of the city has been a pioneer amongst regional seaports. Today, with some twenty-one berths and a full variety of shipping assets, it is still at the forefront of regional facilities.

Hamriyah Free Zone is just to the north of Sharjah city and with its deep-water port, modern set-up and free zone facilities it offers great advantages. With no taxation or restrictive trade practices it is the perfect base from which to take advantage of Sharjah’s complete setup, the other ports and the international airport.

Khor Fakkan’s natural deep-water port is a major container terminal on the east coast. The port has been incredibly important through the ages. Its natural geography, both in terms of it being a perfect sheltered, deep harbour, and in terms of its location on the Gulf of Oman, has propelled it to a central role in much international trade. There is no doubt that individually the ports are strong and impressive facilities, but when considered together alongside Sharjah’s other infrastructure they become a major global player.

municipal management and enticing free zone capability, it is no wonder that Sharjah’s ports are going from strength to strength. It has taken significant investment to achieve, and that investment is an ongoing priority, but the infrastructure compares favourably to any top worldwide facility. Constant upgrading and modernizing keeps operations efficient and fast at the ports themselves. The emirate’s road network allows convenient access across the Arabian Peninsula and on to the wider region. Excellent customer

Entertaining & Educational

Issue 4 Feb-Apr 2011Issue 4 Feb-Apr 2011

Exciting activities and intriguing facts combine in Sharjah to make it an unmatched destination for curious kids and tired parents. Sharjah has a well deserved reputation for being both the most family friendly of destinations and a society that places great emphasis on education. The established attractions of the Discovery Centre and Sharjah Science Museum have an impressive reputation amongst parents and children throughout the region. Now the new Al Awadi Field Study Centre, in the desert near Al Dhaid, has joined them as a favourite of both youngsters and their elders. These are places famed as great fun days out with an incredible educational ability, an appeal unequalled elsewhere.

A great option for a day out for all the family, the Discovery Centre is adored by children of all ages, including toddlers, who can explore the many themed areas and experiment and interact with the exhibits. The underlying aim is to teach

youngsters about the biological, physical and technological worlds in a practical way. There is good pushchair access, an in-house cafe serving a light menu and ample parking.

The Science Museum is one of the region’s most popular family museums. Interactive exhibits and demonstrations cover subjects as diverse as aerodynamics, cryogenics, electricity and colour; and all in a fun, informative way. There is also a planetarium and children’s area where the under 5s and their parents can learn together. The Learning Centre offers more in-depth programmes on many of the subjects covered in the museum.

Out of town, about 10km west of Al Dhaid, Al Awadi Field Study Centre is newly established to fulfil a need previously unmet. It is the first dedicated field studies and sustainable development centre in the Middle East, an impressive, professional setup geared to get the best out of visiting students and bring their education to life through scientific studies and outdoor activities. Groups can hire the campsite and Ecoventures can also arrange adventure camps and tours in the area.
