Welcome to Sharjah

Opening Message

This ninth edition of the official magazine of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority highlights the emirate as a unique tourist destination. Future issues of the quarterly magazine will continue to tell Sharjah’s magical story, to explore its secrets and share its treasures.

Within our fascinating emirate can be found an amazing variety of attractions, exciting festivals and a wonderful landscape – and everywhere, an incredible story.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Sharjah. The emirate has come such a long way; its history is an extraordinary tale of perseverance and progress, of strong values and inspirational leadership; and it would not have been possible without the visionary guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. Under his direction Sharjah has become a vibrant and internationally appealing destination – its people cherished, its proud heritage and traditions preserved.

The reach of Sharjah’s influence, and of His Highness’s inspiration, is far. Across the region and wider world His Highness’s name is revered as a generous, far-sighted nation-builder and as a proud protector of history. An intellectual colossus himself, academic enquiry has been encouraged, detailed research supported and an unprecedented historical collection assembled. The immense appeal of this endeavour can be felt far beyond the grand halls of the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies, which serves as headquarters and archive, as well as being a fascinating tourist attraction.

The outreach stretches past Sharjah’s own borders and has helped other peoples and nations to cherish their own heritage, such as recently demonstrated by extraordinary donations to Egypt. There is plenty of celebration at home too, from the unmatched collection of attractions to events such as the recent F1H2O Nation’s Cup in Khorfakkan on the East Coast and the upcoming Heritage Days festival in Sharjah city. Famed as the home of heritage, Sharjah is a uniquely welcoming and fascinating cultural capital; we hope you enjoy it.

HIS HIGHNESS SHEIkH DR SULTAN BIN MOHAMMAD AL QASIMI, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah

Far-Sighted And Inspiring LeadershipEndeavours to preserve culture, history, the environment and the ethos of academia.

His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has intervened to help restore Egypt’s precious cultural heritage following recent devastation. The Scientific Institute near Tahrir Square in Cairo was engulfed in flames during riots and its collection of over 192,000 books and manuscripts ruined. In a show of extreme generosity His Highness not only offered to rebuild the institute, but will also replace lost items from his personal collection. As His Highness explained, “What happens to Egypt affects us, and this is part of giving back, especially from the people of Sharjah, who were taught by the Egyptians until they completed their way to universities, and whatever we do, it will not be enough.”

The Ruler of Sharjah has also been busy opening prestigious events including cultural highlights such as the 2012 Sharjah Light Festival and the 30th annual exhibition of Emirates Fine Arts Society

at the Sharjah Museum. His Highness has endorsed a number of eco-tourism projects in the emirate, notably the Mangrove Protected and Al Ghail Valley Project in Kalba, and the Wasit Protected Project in Sharjah City, to provide better research, educational and entertainment services and stressed the importance of environmental legacy and the need to preserve it for coming generations.

The Ruler attended a number of prestigious events at Sharjah’s University City and continues to promote the educational agenda as a major priority. To further benefit the emirate, he has also issued an emiri decree establishing the Sharjah Health Insurance Authority (SHIA), and has increased social aid by 45% to all entitled categories in the emirate. A great number of international dignitaries paid their respect to His Highness in acknowledgement of his bold and visionary leadership.

Renowned as the capital of Arab culture and home of heritage, Sharjah is keeper of the region’s history, and provides a crucial service to the entire Arab world.

The Great Sharjah Story

Sharjah plays an important role in the preservation, study and integration of the history of the Arab region. Thanks to the far-sighted vision and intellect of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the emirate has developed an unprecedented collection of historical manuscripts and artefacts alongside unrivalled academic expertise. Headquartered at the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies in Sharjah’s University City, the reach is global.

Sharjah’s role as cultural guardian was impressively demonstrated following recent turmoil in Egypt. His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, intervened following the destruction of heritage monuments in Cairo and pledged to oversee the renovation of the Egyptian capital’s famous Scientific Complex which was set ablaze during recent riots.

In acknowledgement of the crucial role that Egypt has played in disseminating

knowledge across the Arab world, and in memory of his own personal experiences at the Scientific Complex, His Highness instructed the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies to begin the process of sourcing original books and manuscripts to be donated to the National Archives in Cairo to replace those lost during the fire.

A remarkable act of generosity, the books donated from His Highness’ private collection will include a rare historical compilation entitled ‘Describing Egypt’, which was written by Napoleon’s scientists, artists and historians, and includes an exhaustive description of Egypt at the turn of the 19th century. Other precious original manuscripts to be replaced include journals and maps dating to 1860 from the private collection of Prince Youssef Kamal, a descendant of Mohamed Ali of the Ottoman dynasty, that were also destroyed in the fire. The incredible generosity of His Highness received widespread acclaim from across Egypt and the Arab world and further strengthened the role of Sharjah as protector of heritage.

Everyone is welcome: from the visiting tourist to the University City scholar. As well as the collection of original maps and prints, there are model dhows and ancient coins; and there are galleries dedicated to His Highness’ life and work.

Sharjah’s own heritage is a fascinating story that reaches back through all human history. The extraordinary collection at the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies shows a fascinating culture right through the ages. In the centre’s dark, galleried halls the first ever maps of the region are displayed in glass cases. Smudged lines, scratched inscriptions and some striking cartographical errors do not obscure the references to Sharjah. The emirate of then would be unrecognisable today – before the discovery of oil it was a place without modern amenities but with religion, with learning and with a wealth built up on foreign trade and great communal endeavour.

The centre brings together an eclectic and comprehensive collection of artefacts and research materials that detail

in full the development of international understanding of the region in general, and Sharjah and the UAE in particular. Accepted wisdoms are displayed in context, from the ideas of the ancient Greeks and the Romans to the very first printed maps of the region from the 15th century; through the full development of cartographic knowledge and technique over the centuries; and illustrated with engravings, drawings and watercolours from as early as

the 17th century and the very first photographs of the region. Told through from the earliest illustrations, the history of the Arabian Gulf is an intriguing study of accuracies and inaccuracies, of insightful detail and imposed colonial bias.

The evolution of human knowledge about the region is both fascinating and fantastically relevant. The story endures to the modern day as testament to the remarkable journey this emirate and this region have completed.

Sharjah’s own heritage is a fascinating story that reaches back through all human history. The extraordinary collection at the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies highlights this culture through the ages.

of everything in the centre’s galleries; it is a fantastic home for the region’s history.

It is rightly a magnificent building to do justice to the subject it houses. Built upon the Sharjah Ruler’s personal collection, there are great galleries of maps, paintings, photographs and important artefacts; and a comprehensive archive and library with computer terminals and microfilm readers. The centre is art gallery, museum, library and research archive in one.

The Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies is a uniquely impressive intellectual hub and provides an extraordinary academic focal point for research into the region’s history. Its collection of the earliest writings, maps and images of the region is unequalled. With one and a half million pages of primary source material; collections of British, Dutch, Portuguese and other European books; a complete archive of Arabic work in the field; and full details

Dining

Traditional SweetsThere is no doubting it, Sharjah has a sweet tooth. There are numerous sweet shops, cake-stocked bakeries, cafes heaving with international treats and colourful ice cream stalls throughout the city and across the emirate.

Traditionally, sugar and spice were precious delicacies and their use was celebratory. Available in the traditional souks to this day, these raw materials were combined to create special treats. Highly prized and locally available, honey and dates have always been especially popular and are revered as among the best in the world.

Whether sugar syrup or honey, traditional sweets typically

include a delicate array of combinations of ground nuts, particularly almonds and pistachios, and heady fragrances, such as orange blossom water, rose water and saffron. The very finest specialities from across the Arab region and further afield can be found in Sharjah, from halva to knafeh, basbousa and qatayef, and a complete range of baklava.

For a truly authentic accompaniment to a cup of tea or coffee head to the food stalls at any of the emirate’s many festivals. Offering heritage food prepared by local ladies, they are a truly surprising dining treat. Particularly popular are the local donuts, awamat, which are fried balls of dough rolled in syrup, which have been around and enjoyed for more than 500 years.

World-class powerboat racing and family-friendly festivities brought unprecedented excitement to picturesque Khorfakkan.

East Coast Festivities

With dramatic entertainments on shore and in the great crescent bay, Khorfakkan put on an incredible extravaganza of an event that delighted a massed crowd of locals, tourists and an international television audience. As host of the H20 Nations Cup Powerboat Championship, there was world-class sporting action – the powerboats competing as national teams in this new version of the popular international watersport series. The race itself was incredibly dramatic with the UAE successfully defending the title won at the inaugural Nations Cup in Singapore in 2011. Success was Sharjah’s too as it furthered its profile as the emirate of festivals.

by SCTDA, the sporting action was supplemented with a stunning festival.

For four days and nights, in the beautiful beach setting of Khorfakkan’s Heritage Village the entertainment and cultural fair enthralled all ages – from fire and light shows to virtual games, from clowns and magicians to archery, airsoft shooting, a climbing wall and a traditional night bazaar.

international attention, the seaside tourist paradise is set to become more of a fixture on the global tourism map, attracting more international visitors and more investment to Sharjah’s East Coast. This first Nations Cup Championship was telecast around the world and attracted powerboat enthusiasts, thousands of residents and foreign tourists to Khorfakkan itself.

SCTDA officials announced that the H20 Nations Cup would

Two of the world’s leading cruise liner operators, Seabourn and Costa Cruises, are expected to bring some 67,000 international passengers to Sharjah’s East Coast this season alone.

For thousands of years Khorfakkan has been known to mariners as a safe port. Its remarkable crescent bay has provided shelter from the Gulf of Oman through a long and distinguished history. Today that heritage is being updated with the continuing arrival of major international cruise liners. Sailing from right across the Indian Ocean and beyond, these giant cruise liners stop off at all the key global tourist hotspots. In growing numbers they are stopping at Khorfakkan.

The recognition by world-renowned cruise liners of Sharjah’s appeal to its passengers is a reflection of the emirate’s tourism industry, which is one of the fastest growing and most promising. It has maintained its remarkable pace of growth over the past decade despite the recent challenges faced by the world economy. The emirate attracts thousands of cruise passengers every year and around 70,000 cruise passengers are expected during this season.

With the richest of seafaring histories, a fascinating culture and a reputation as an amazing tourist destination, it is no wonder Sharjah has become a must-see on the destination list for major international cruises.

Major Cruise Liners Come To Sharjah

As the only emirate with coastline on both the Arabian Gulf (the west coast) and the Gulf of Oman and Indian Ocean (the east coast), Sharjah has a broad appeal for arriving cruise passengers. Excursions around Khorfakkan can take in intriguing historical sights and exciting active pursuits. There are shopping and dining options, breathtaking views and stunning beaches, and a climate perfectly suited to relaxing.

The coastline is fascinating to explore. Whether explored by sea or land, the immediate vicinity of Khorfakkan is a timeless wonder. Here the majestic Hajar Mountains rise sharply from the smooth beaches to their rugged heights. Secreted amongst their harsh edges are peaceful palm groves, ancient archaeological sights

and amazing routes for trekking and mountain biking. And up in their heights are fresh water pools and reservoirs to help cool off intrepid explorers.

Famed for its aquatic pursuits, Khorfakkan is a perfect base from which to enjoy a complete variety of watersports and an amazing underwater wildlife. Everything can be arranged from the town and there are wonderful bays and hidden beaches to discover a short journey along the coast. Further south, the famous mangroves of Khor Kalba form a precious natural habitat, home to its own species of critically endangered kingfisher. And to the north, Dibba Al Hisn is a harbour town which provides access to the Musandam peninsular beyond and is renowned for its fishing fleet. Indeed, the

fishing all along this coast is rightly famed and year round there is great sport on offer.

Underwater, the wildlife really comes alive. Diving and snorkelling draw thousands of visitors to Khorfakkan every year. From established dive sites, including numerous wreck dives, to new discoveries, the waters here are a home to a fascinating array of marine life, including giant manta rays, whale sharks, many turtles and even curious but unthreatening sharks.

The emirate celebrates its seafaring heritage and maritime tradition with a series of events that culminate in the annual Sharjah Water Festival in Sharjah city every December, but throughout the year and all across the emirate, there is much to celebrate for locals and visitors alike.

Involvement in emerging and developing markets has given new avenues for growth for the entire industry. Gulftainer looks set to continue its global growth and has recently announced plans to invest Dhs.1.01 billion to develop and operate a port near St Petersburg, Russia.

The project is planned to be at Ust-Luga and will provide an alternative to the congested St Petersburg Port. The transport and port infrastructure in the Baltic and Russia has grown dramatically in recent years but there is potential for significant further growth. The ratio of containers handled to population in Russia is only 30 per 1,000 people, compared with 168 per 1,000 in the European Union. Close association with major developing economies and industries gives great strength to Gulftainer and great promise of further future success.

Gulftainer’s home port of Sharjah Container Terminal (SCT) in Port Khalid is the foundation for this successful

expansion. Adjacent to Sharjah’s industrial zone, SCT handles containers on behalf of more than 40 shipping lines, including all of the world’s top 20 companies, and accommodates more than 45 per cent of the non-oil manufacturing capacity of the UAE. SCT was the first purpose built and fully equipped modern container terminal in the Middle East. Over on the East Coast, Khorfakkan is one of the world’s leading container trans-shipment ports. The increasingly important strategic location on Sharjah’s Indian Ocean coast is close to the main east-west shipping routes.

With over 35 years of experience, impressive port facilities, comprehensive infrastructure, and an approach of customised service excellence, from its Sharjah origins Gulftainer has become a major player in the intensely competitive world of international shipping where speed, efficiency and cost are vital.www.gulftainer.com

For over 35 years Gulftainer has been expanding its international operations from its Sharjah base. Today it operates Sharjah Container Terminal (SCT) and Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT) in Sharjah, as well as Ruwais port in Abu Dhabi for the international plastics solutions company, Borouge, and has ventures in six other countries worldwide. Business is booming and Gulftainer has recently reported record volume throughput at the beginning of 2012, while equivalent international companies have reported losses.

Success has come consistently and Gulftainer has grown year on year. Now with operations in Kuwait, Turkey, Pakistan, The Comoros Islands, Iraq, Russia and Brazil as well as the UAE, Gulftainer is making advantage from its solid foundation. Increasing volumes of trade in the home region have led to significant optimism about future prospects both locally and internationally.

A major player in the international port, transport and logistics industry, Gulftainer was established in Sharjah in 1976 and is the largest privately owned port operator in the world.
