Welcome to Sharjah

Opening Message

This tenth edition of the official magazine of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority highlights the emirate as a unique tourist destination. Future issues of the quarterly magazine will continue to tell Sharjah’s magical story, to explore its secrets and share its treasures.

The spirit of Sharjah can be felt across the emirate and never more so than during Ramadan when the warm and welcoming atmosphere is most pronounced.

Sharjah has a very unique spirit. The emirate is a special place where heritage and culture are celebrated, where religion and charity are of central importance and where residents and visitors are cherished alike. Wonderfully welcoming, Sharjah promises and delivers an unforgettable holiday experience, combining leisure pursuits with cultural insights.

Throughout the year and right across the emirate there are fun and fascinating places to explore, people to meet, events to attend and activities to enjoy. Sharjah is the most diverse destination with coastline on both the Arabian Gulf, where Sharjah city shines as a modern metropolis built around beautiful lagoons, and on the Indian Ocean to the east where the towns of Dibba Al-Hisn, Khor Fakkan and Kalba boast stunning settings at the foot of the dramatic Hajar Mountains. From mountain peak to ocean depth this is a landscape of perfect beaches and pristine desert, of lush oases and important mangrove forests.

Sharjah’s people are as celebrated as its landscapes. Visitors are welcomed with true warmth and given real insight into our culture. Ramadan is the perfect time of year for tourists to experience the spirit of Sharjah. Whether enjoying splendid Iftar buffets or joining the happy crowds on sultry summer nights there is always an opportunity for culture and leisure alike. We warmly welcome all visitors and trust that you will have a good time in our emirate.

HIS HIGHNESS SHEIKH DR SULTAN BIN MOHAMMAD AL QASIMI, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah

SCTDA NewsSharjah News

Inspiring And Driving Sharjah’s Cultural AgendaThe Ruler champions pursuit of knowledge, arts, environment and civic issues.

His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, is renowned as a true polymath, a renaissance man whose expertise spans a number of different areas. It is a great testament that such significant intellectual energies are concentrated on advancing Sharjah.

By example and by action His Highness inspires and drives the emirate’s agenda. In recognition of his academic contributions, the Ruler recently received the Prince Salman bin Abdelaziz Prize for Arabian Peninsula Historical Studies and Research. The recipient of many international accolades, he is also continuously busy supporting and attending events at academic institutions in Sharjah and abroad. Indeed the emirate’s proud reputation as a hub for educational excellence is due to his leadership.

The arts are particularly close to His Highness’ heart and the emirate’s comprehensive calendar of exhibitions, events

and initiatives is also directly inspired by the Ruler. The emirate’s approach is to champion local and regional culture and to celebrate it at Sharjah’s highly-regarded cultural institutions whilst also taking any opportunity to take the cultural message further afield. To that end, His Highness has not only initiated many local artistic programmes but has also enabled the travelling cultural exhibition, Sharjah Cultural Days, to visit two countries a year and has himself been honoured as a playwright with one of his works recently being performed in Europe.

Central to Sharjah’s agenda is the desire to care for the emirate’s own environment and community and to share it with the wider world. New developments include furthering the advanced educational sector and initiating a forward-thinking healthcare centre. Additionally, the environmental future is being cared for as recent eco-tourism initiatives at Kalba prove.

Ecotourism Highlighted At Sir Bu Nair Festival 2012Sir Bu Nair Island is blessed with a rich ecosystem and a wealth of natural resources that are set to prove ideal for ecotourism. The 13th edition of the island’s festival celebrated the ecological paradise known for its rare marine life and delicate ecological equilibrium.

The impressive growth and excellence of Sharjah’s tourism sector was celebrated at the recent Sharjah Tourism Excellence Awards 2011. The grand ceremony, the fourth edition of the awards, was hosted by SCTDA under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.

initiatives from the previous year were recognised and celebrated, and Sharjah’s position as a key global tourism destination was emphasised by many significant achievements.

SCTDA Chairman HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman marked the occasion by congratulating the collective efforts. “One of the most important factors that contributed to tourism and success in other areas over the years has been the ability

A number of events and activities highlighted the environment, heritage and leisure opportunities on the island.

With ecotourism emerging as one of the most important and enthusiastically developing forms of tourism, the festival served to promote Sharjah as a world-class ecotourism destination with

a rich heritage and culture. As SCTDA Chairman HE

Mohamed Ali Al Noman emphasised, “Sharjah is ideally suited for ecotourism as it has a diverse ecological profile that includes a long coastline, rich marine life, mountains, valleys, deserts and natural reserves. Ecological resources around the world are becoming scarcer by the day and it is important to protect our own limited and precious natural resources and environment.”

of the emirate to adapt itself to new trends and demands of the tourism industry and offer strategic solutions, ensuring quality of service standards and enhancing opportunities for tourism growth.”

“Striving for excellence in the tourism sector and achieving quality of tourism products and services in accordance with international standards will encourage the private sector to unleash its true potential.”

Increase In Chinese Tourists Breathtaking Diversity

Supporting Events And Activities

The number of Chinese tourists to Sharjah has seen a dramatic increase in recent years, from some 8,000 in 2009 to around 30,000 last year. To exploit and expand this promising market, SCTDA was an active presence at the Beijing International Tourism Expo.

“Our objective is to make the most of the growing Chinese and Asian interest in Sharjah and

Sharjah enjoyed a hugely successful participation in the 2012 Arabian Travel Market that reaffirmed the importance of being part of the prestigious travel and tourism networking summit that brings together governments, decision makers and leading players of the industry.

SCTDA strengthened its commitment and continuous support to all events and activities that strengthen Sharjah’s position in the cultural, sporting and economic spheres. As a part of initiatives to improve the lives of those with special needs, SCTDA proudly supported the Khorfakkan Blind Football Championship. SCTDA is working to enhance the emirate’s special needs events and facilities.

The Riyadh Travel Fair has emerged as one of the key events of the tourism and hospitality industry in the region and is an excellent opportunity to exchange experience and expertise with other participants to tap the immense potential of tourism and economic opportunities.

Sharjah’s impressive showing at the fair showcased the emirate’s popular tourist attractions and holiday and shopping opportunities that prove so appealing to GCC travellers during the long summer break and at other times. “The Gulf is one of the fastest growing

SCTDA has continued its dynamic actions to engage further with the GCC tourism market by holding roadshows in Kuwait, Qatar and Oman. Coming together with Air Arabia to showcase the emirate’s fast growing tourism market before select gatherings of travel and tour operators and representatives of the hospitality sector.

SCTDA is committed to attracting more Gulf visitors to Sharjah. The emirate is already famed for its cultural offerings and family-friendly festivals, and some 24% of Sharjah’s tourists come from GCC countries. With SCTDA’s initiatives and the expansion of the Air Arabia network the numbers are set to rise.

regions today as far as tourism and economic growth are concerned. The UAE itself has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years. The possibilities are endless for everyone,” said SCTDA Chairman HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman.

to benefit from the immense potential the fast burgeoning Chinese and Asian tourism markets,” said SCTDA Chairman HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman.

With 20 million tourists a year currently and more than 100 million expected by 2020, China is easily the biggest tourism market in the world. “We need to tap into this massive market,” added Al Noman.

“This is a great opportunity to interact with other leading tourism players and present Sharjah’s unique tourism product in its breathtaking diversity before the world using this amazing platform and all the channels and facilities it offers,” said SCTDA Chairman HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman.

The SCTDA Chairman said that tourism development in the emirate is based on extensive studies of foreign markets, focusing on all essential aspects of growth and development.

“We hope and expect that the ATM and other exhibitions in which Sharjah has been participating will have a direct and healthy impact on the number and flow of tourists to the emirate and promote the distinct nature of Sharjah tourism.”

Sharjah has for long been a favourite holiday destination for Saudi tourists, who represent the emirate’s second largest market after Europeans. Nearly 100,000 Saudis visited Sharjah in 2011 out of more than 380,000 GCC tourists.

Careers 2012 & BeyondSCTDA and the Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology have joined together in an initiative to boost Emiratisation and offer employment and training opportunities to young UAE nationals. More than 2,000 students, as well as representatives of public and private sectors and the media attended the Careers 2012 & Beyond Show. The event is inspired by the desire to tap into the Emirati talent pool and capabilities with a view to exploit and nurture their role as citizens and stakeholders in the economic development and building of the nation and society.

Community EngagementSCTDA was proud to sponsor Mosaic 2012, the Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology initiative to celebrate science and encourage students to constantly strive for scientific excellence and expansion of their knowledge frontiers. Association with such events helps SCTDA to stay in touch with the community and emphasise the importance of learning.

Education

University Dental Hospital Sharjah (UDHS) combines the latest, world-leading facilities with innovation in the provision of both education and healthcare. The 114 fully equipped dental clinics conform to the highest international standards and boast the most advanced technologies.

The facility serves as a high-end private dental clinic whose medical professionals are leaders in their fields. The clinicians are highly qualified as they also serve as professors, lecturers and course leaders in the well-regarded associated higher education institute. The guarantee is of the highest standards of care and equipment.

This guarantee is valid for the other level of dental care available. To reach out to as wide a public as possible, and ensure in one bold move that the citizens of Sharjah have excellent provision of healthcare, the same clinical facilities are also available for no charge.

The public can enjoy free dentistry under the care of student clinicians. For only a small one-time registration fee patients can avail themselves of the full facilities and be treated by future expert professionals. The students are carefully mentored and exceptionally well taught. Combining educational apprenticeship with the delivery of advanced dental care to the populace at large, Sharjah has brought together educational and civic innovation.

Students also gain enormous benefit from the new facility and are guaranteed to receive a much greater hands-on experience with patients and technologies than other training institutions can provide. As a supplement to theoretical training, the working clinics will ensure that generations of graduates from Sharjah go on to become leaders in their fields across the region and wider world.

Educational Overview University Dental HospitalSharjah’s extensive educational excellence continues to go from strength to strength.

The ambitious new centre at Sharjah’s University City is a ground-breaking innovation for healthcare and education in the region.

In September, thousands of students will start a new school or academic term at one of Sharjah’s many educational facilities. Education is a central and defining feature of Sharjah society. It is a key principle at the core of Arab and Islamic culture and, since the first school opened in the 1950s, Sharjah has been leading the way in the region.

The emirate’s impressive educational infrastructure caters to both boys and girls, from nursery level right through to university and beyond. A huge number of internationally-accredited institutions cover a diverse range of curricula. All educational facilities are regularly inspected to ensure the highest quality standards. Furthermore, thanks to ongoing investment, the facilities are constantly improving and offer students the very best

in academic, extra-curricular and sporting opportunities.

The epicentre of Sharjah’s educational excellence is University City, a grand, multi-campus statement of the emirate’s commitment to offering ideal circumstances for learning and academic research. There are colleges of law, health, nursing, science and Islamic studies, as well as a college of creative science and an arts college.

The vast campus is an attraction in its own right. Located on the outskirts of the city, it is spacious, leafy and

calm. Magnificent buildings with sweeping lawns, flowerbeds and fountains house colleges affiliated to a number of universities from the UK and US, as well as institutes unique to Sharjah. On campus you’ll find vast complexes with excellent resources for the promotion of learning and academic research.

With the new academic term, Sharjah is continuing to marry the best in international standards with the best of Islamic and Arab heritage to reaffirm its position as an internationally-renowned educational centre of excellence.

The facility opened in September 2011 as the first university dental hospital and is the largest dental facility in the region. UDHS provides paediatric dentistry, preventive dentistry, orthodontics, restorative treatment, root canal and jaw treatments, oral surgery, oral medicine and radiology with integrated care from intervention to prevention, protection and improvement. www.udhs.ae

An incredible wildlife habitat, a fascinating historical location, an exciting adventure destination and home to the region’s most innovative eco-tourism project – Kalba is a wonderfully enjoyable place to visit.

Kalba

AdventureTo kayak through the Khor Kalba mangroves is to experience the adventure of starring in your very own wildlife documentary (see p.34 for tour operators). Inland, at the foothills of the mighty Hajar Mountains, Al Ghayl Fort is an impressively evocative site and nearby are important archaeological sites, the new wildlife reserve and a mountainous landscape to tackle on foot or mountain bike.

Explore With 15km of Indian Ocean coastline, Kalba boasts great beaches and a rich maritime culture. To explore the town today is to get a feeling of an enviable way of life where fishing and football dominate. Goalposts and fishing boats, friendly games and strenuous net hauling, an over-performing professional football team and an impressive fish market all creates a great community atmosphere.

WildlifeHome to one of the planet’s rarest birds, the creek is a most precious wildlife habitat and thick with one of the Indian Ocean coast’s oldest and most northerly mangrove forests. The striking turquoise plumage of the white-collared kingfisher makes it quite possible to glimpse this critically-endangered species. There are also nesting turtles, tree-climbing crabs and many other intriguing birds to see.

Dine With tables on the beach and the freshest produce, Bent Al Nokhetha, just south of the fishing harbour, is famed as one of the area’s best restaurants. The fish market in the harbour also boasts brilliantly fresh fish, as does the fishermen’s café at the mouth of the creek and the Breeze Grill on the banks of Khor Kalba. There are also numerous shops, malls, cafes and restaurants in town.

HistoryThe fascinating Al Qasimi House museum was the residence of the former ruler of Sharjah and gives an insight into the area’s history. Opposite the museum is one of the many forts in the area that further detail Kalba’s extraordinary backstory, stretching back from generations of the Qasimi dynasty, past the forces of foreign empires to ancient archaeological finds and prehistoric geological markings.

With the Hajar Mountains as a dramatic western backdrop, Khor Kalba’s mangrove forest is the picture of a world-class wildlife destination. Set fair on the Indian Ocean between Oman and Fujairah, Kalba is home to the region’s most unique eco-tourist initiative that will stretch from mountaintop to seabed and include nature reserves, habitat regeneration, historical restorations and visitor facilities. See map on p38.

Sharjah is known as the ideal Ramadan tourist destination with its cultural attractions drawing many foreign visitors.

The emirate has impressive and important mosques.

Museums and galleries celebrate Islamic culture.

Dining, shopping and entertainments open late.

Family-friendly facilities bring the generations together.

Sharjah is a unique and fascinating place where tradition and modernity have found expression in the very character of the emirate and its people. Proud heritage and a deep-rooted religious culture combine with the particular and immediate demands of the modern world in Sharjah. The emirate stands distinct in the scale, ambition and enthusiasm of its charitable

endeavours. Aiding the needy, supporting communities and upholding civic values; Sharjah has an incredible record of charity. And during Ramadan every year the extent of this spirit is never more apparent.

To tour the emirate at this time of year is to truly appreciate the charitable embrace. From the city of Sharjah on the Arabian Gulf to the eastern enclaves of Dibba Al-Hisn, Khor Fakkan and

Ramadan is the most special time of year and gives a real insight into the true heart of Sharjah. Religion, community, heritage and charity are central to the emirate and are richly celebrated.

Kalba on the Indian Ocean coast, the remarkable frequency of Iftar tents serves as proud testimony to the charitable spirit.

Charity Throughout the year and throughout the emirate charity is central to the people of Sharjah. During Ramadan it is at its most pronounced and involves the complete community. The Sharjah Charity Association carries out an array of initiatives in partnership with other government institutions and private companies. The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority is centrally involved in many of these as part of its continuing humanitarian commitments.

The very number of noble campaigns during Ramadan marks Sharjah out as a special place and the community commitment to helping the poor and needy is an essential part of society. This moral duty is apparent at all levels of people and businesses. Many initiatives are dedicated to ensure the wellbeing of labourers while also giving thanks to them and recognising their importance to Sharjah.

Community Volunteers come from across society, from major governmental institutions as well as from leading private sector organisations. The outreach is part of Sharjah’s ongoing endeavours to ensure its entire population is suitably cared for. Healthcare and education are areas of special focus and the emirate’s innovative and energetic successes are a source of great pride.

The many beautiful mosques across the emirate serve as true centres of the community, and faith very much unites

society. Religious education is central to Sharjah and prizes and scholarship encourage learning amongst all of the population, even in the most remote corners of the emirate.

Sharjah's East CoastThe mighty forts that once watched over Sharjah’s Indian Ocean settlements have now been superseded by impressive municipal facilities. Ramadan is the perfect time to explore the East Coast and enjoy the heritage of community spirit.

Culture Ramadan in Sharjah is always busy with events and festivals celebrating the emirate’s rich culture. From Islamic teachings and traditional regional ways of life to more modern artistic expressions and events designed to bring families together, it is the busiest of times.

Touring the emirate during Ramadan gives insight not only into the charitable spirit of the holy month, but also reveals a strong sense of civic pride. Travelling through the region’s many nations and emirates, it is always apparent when you are in an enclave of Sharjah: the very streets stand out as different. From the west coast metropolis of Sharjah city to the oasis towns of the hinterland and Indian Ocean settlements in the east, Sharjah’s municipal concerns are distinguished with strong civic architecture, impressively comprehensive facilities, and smart, illuminated streets.

The clean streets are only a sign of the deeper lying concern for community and culture. Indeed the striking civic buildings, both

Outdoor parades of stalls selling everything from traditional trinkets to snack food pop up after dark, making it a great destination during Ramadan and Eid. Throughout this special time of year Al Qasba also arranges a series of cultural events including popular Islamic lectures which are held in English and Arabic. A large air-conditioned tent proves an ideal setting for these sessions of spiritual contemplation, and the same venue is kept busy throughout the summer with a programme of events that particularly concentrates on children’s entertainment and education. Through meticulous processes, Sharjah’s conservation and restoration experts breathe new life into old buildings Detailed archival studies are undertaken to discover as much as possible about the original buildings. Sharjah Heritage Museum is open every day; entrance is Dhs.5 for adults and free for children and families. Call 06 568 0006 to enquire about Ramadan hours.

Heritage MuseumRe-opened in May this year, Sharjah Heritage Museum is the latest addition to the emirate’s exceptional museums – and its varied exhibitions make this new cultural hotspot an essential stop during Ramadan. The museum has been thoughtfully put together so that visitors get to discover the emirate’s development from its early fishing and pearling days all the way through to modern times.

The exhibitions are arranged into several galleries, each of which reflects a specific highlight or turning point in the emirate’s development to modern-day prominence.

The Landscape gallery features Sharjah’s natural habitat with displays portraying the emirate’s varied landscapes stretching from the pristine coast to the deserts, mountains and oases further inland.

Elsewhere, the Lifestyle gallery has displays that explain the UAE’s cultural values and lifestyle. Similarly, the Livelihood gallery offers a glimpse into traditional ways of making a living, with the professions and trades varying from early import/export to goldsmithing and textile work.

festivities linked to annual special occasions such as Ramadan, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha.

The re-opening of Sharjah Heritage Museum marks a continuation of the emirate’s ongoing drive to build bridges between its past and future. The museum’s setting is perfectly suitable. Located amongst the other restored traditional buildings of the Heritage Area, the museum is central to the Heart of Sharjah development project which is restoring the traditional heritage areas and merging them seamlessly with a string of new hotels, boutiques and restaurants, many of which will be housed in restored historic houses once the project is fully completed in 2025.

During Ramadan, however, the museum’s biggest draw is the Celebrations gallery. This informative and entertaining exhibition is dedicated to the UAE’s rich cultural traditions and

As the sun goes down, the city really comes to life with a great array of after-dark attractions that prove particularly popular in the sultry summer months.

The lights come on in an initial flicker of a few streets and buildings, but as the sky darkens overhead more and more of the city lights up. Soon all is a blaze of colourful lighting as shop fronts show-off and skyscrapers shimmer. With attractions aglow and iconic architecture illuminated the people step out too, and parades of cars, boats and pedestrians signal eveningtime in Sharjah.

By virtue of culture and climate the city really comes to life at night. The metropolis shows a different face after dark, the illuminations highlighting Sharjah’s incredible array of restaurants and shops that seem to come from every corner of the world. Attractions are impossible to miss, from the Eye of the Emirates’ ‘ring of fire’ at Al Qasba to the multicolour neons of Al Jazeera Park in the middle of Khalid Lagoon. Now the region’s latest leisure destination, Al Majaz Waterfront has added the exciting, story-telling audio-visual Sharjah Musical Fountain.

It is particularly renowned for its traders of gold and carpets but also has a broad selection of jewellery, electronics and traditional regional souvenirs. round of mini-golf and a poetic performance of the Sharjah Musical Fountain whilst dining overlooking the lagoon. Don’t eat too much as no evening is complete without an ice cream at Al Qasba and a trip in the spectacular 60m high Eye of the Emirates which gives incredible views over city and lagoons.

Sharjah By Night Al Qasba attractions are open

until 01:00 at weekends. Al Majaz Waterfront dining

venues stay open past midnight all week.

Central Souk is busiest from 20:00 to 23:00 every day.

Beyond The CitySharjah is a vast and diverse emirate with coastline on both the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, and with terrain that includes desert and mountain. To really appreciate its natural wonder, spend a night camping in the wild. The untainted skies guarantee unforgettable displays of stars.

A landmark leisure destination, Al Majaz Waterfront sits at the base of Khalid Lagoon and houses lagoon-side restaurants and cafes that provide a perfect view of the Sharjah Musical Fountain which has spectacular daily shows. A deliberately theatrical venue, it will host a busy calendar of exciting events throughout the year.

Access is easy with some 1,000 parking spaces. In addition, boat tours are available to allow visitors a fresh perspective on the city. Designed for all ages, there is a distinguished mosque and walking areas and green spaces. Children are very well

catered for with fantastic open and covered play areas, including a water-fuelled ‘splash park’ that alone make this an essential destination for families.

Sharjah is famed for being the most family-friendly of places and the opening of Al Majaz Waterfront only increases the appeal for tourists and residents alike. From the numerous parks (which all remain open late into the summer evenings) to the many play areas in the shopping malls, there are plenty of opportunities to entertain and exercise infants.

The true headline attractions include the Central Souk, Al Majaz Waterfront and Al Qasba. All are gathered around Khalid

Lagoon and an evening spent amongst them is guaranteed to be the highlight of any holiday. Journey between them by foot or taxi, or take a boat trip around the lagoon from any of the many places along
