From the Pastor’s Desk….

The Gospel (Mt.25:14-30) today is about the parable of the talents. (The ‘talent’ Jesus refers to is

an enormous quantity of precious metal, .i.e., 26 kgs. of gold or silver.) In this parable, a man go-

ing on a journey leaves his three servants different amounts of talents and expects them to use

these in productive ways. Upon his return, he demands a report on what they did with the talents,

only to find out that that the first two doubled what was given them while the third merely hid his

talent for fear of losing it.

The master in this parable is God, who in his generosity, gives us, his servants, different "talents"

necessary for our salvation. He gives us our physical life and all the means to sustain that life.

More importantly God gives us the gift of sharing his own life. He also gives us the gifts of faith,

hope and love and expects that these "talents" or gifts are put to good use (like the first two ser-

vants) and not be wasted by hoarding (like the third servant).

We may tend to think of "talents" only in the material sense: money, beauty, power, intelligence,

etc. But the talents God gives us go above the material. We are spiritual people who are living

in the material world only for a limited time. All the talents God gives us, material or spiritual,

should be used to give Him glory and spread His kingdom. What better way can we do these than

by loving Him and leading others to love Him? The material "talents" can or will eventually run

out or be left behind, but the spiritual "talents" we are blessed with multiplies when shared.

Jesus assures us that our talents will not "run out" if used for Him, since "anyone who has will be

given more; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away." He loves us

more than what our minds or hearts can grasp and yearns to tell us at the end of our journey,

"well done, good and faithful servants and share the Master’s joy!"

Happy Thanksgiving!

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." (Ps 107:1)

This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. This is a special time to thank God for His love and bless-

ings. However, each day of our lives should really be one of praise and thanksgiving. St. Paul

reminds us, “In all circumstances give thanks to God” (1Thes 5:18). Let us also remember to be

generous in sharing God's gifts with others and that prayers of thanks should precede our re-

quests.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Fr. John Francis

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL CORNER

Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information 718 591-6536

This week our thoughts turn to giving thanks for the multitude of blessings that our Loving God has bestowed upon each of us and our families. Indeed, all our families look forward to gathering with family and friends to celebrate this great day. However, before heading out to the football game or to where you will spend the day, please remember to first come to Mass to offer gratitude for so much; then set out on your “journey”. Our children from the Faith Forma-tion classes will be dressed as Pilgrims and Indians and will take an active part in a variety of ways in the 9:30 am Mass.

Next Sunday the Church celebrates the Feast of Christ our King which brings Cycle A of the liturgical year to a close. The following Sunday begins Advent with Cycle B. Though there is no class on Sunday, we are inviting our children to come with their families either to the 9:15 am Mass in Spanish or the 10:45 am Mass in English. At both of these Masses a boy will be dressed as Jesus our King and many children will participate by following Jesus, carrying pendants with the values that we should have in Jesus’ kingdom.
