From the Pastor’s Desk….

Today’s Gospel reading is from “the Sermon on the Mount”: the greatest sermon Jesus ever preached. This passage deals with trusting God and performing good deeds of loving service to our neighbors. The first reading from the book of Prophet Isaiah highlights one of the simplest and most intimate im-ages of God in the Hebrew Scriptures namely: God's love is like a woman's for the child of her womb. The prophet speaks to people like us who wonder whether God may have forgotten us. He as-sures us that God is like a mother reflecting in love on the child in her womb. God cannot forget us. God will not abandon His people, for how could He forget His own children? In the Gospel passage, Christ wants to reassure us: Do not worry so much about things, always won-dering, "What are we to eat? What are we to drink? How are we to be clothed?" Remember, your heav-enly Father knows you need them all and he will take care of you." Don’t worry! Worry can eat away at our ability to cope with the situation we find ourselves in. We are dependent on something outside ourselves. It should be God, not the material goods we own. God is our provider. He is a loving Father who holds the whole world in His hands. He will certainly care for us. May God help us to look to God in trust and to stop seeking security in material possession! Ash Wednesday (March 1, 2017) The Season of Lent begins this Wednesday. It is a special time for us to take a deeper look at our lives and how we are responding to the Gospel message. During this time, we are called to observe the three traditional components to Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. I encourage all of you to do something special for this Lent 2017. Here are some of the suggestions: Consume (eat, drink, buy, waste) less, Pray more (the rosary, Stations of the Cross, 15 extra quiet minutes with God), Be generous (give of your treasure, time and talents) to help others. Get your pri-orities straight, go to confession, choose God, and let Jesus lead the way. God bless you! Fr. John Francis

As part of our celebration of the 100 years of our Parish we are planning a special day to recognize those parishioners who have been members of St. Nick's Parish for 30 or more years. If you have been part of the Parish since 1987 and before please let us know so that we can include you in our Day of Recognition in May.
