Word (©2015), PrepareTheWord.com.

From the Pastor’s Desk... Today we find Prophet Elijah in the desert tired, hungry and deeply depressed. He was fleeing because Jezebel, the evil queen of Israel, wanted to kill him. Jezebel was a pagan woman who was promoting the idol worship of Baal in Israel and she had driven the people of Israel away from the Lord. Elijah flees for his life by heading toward the sacred mountain Horeb (Sinai). God sent him food and drink to nourish him on his journey for forty days in the desert. There God will communicate to him in a tiny whisper. The prophet Elijah found strength for his body from the food provided by the angel, but found strength for his spirit from the word of Yahweh on Mount Horeb. Like Elijah in the first reading, at times we feel disappointed and disheartened by life, but reinvigorated by the Eucharistic food at Mass, we find strength to continue our faith journey every day. We continue reading from chapter six of St John’s Gospel for the next three weeks. Jesus tells us plainly, “The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world” (Jn 6:52). The Jews were complaining and resisting to accept that Truth, saying he is only the “son of Joseph”. Jesus tells them that their knowledge about him is insufficient and need to rise up in the leap of faith. Faith is a gift from the Father that enables us to accept Jesus and his teaching. “No one can come to me unless the Father, who sent me, draws him”. We are aware of the spiritual malnutrition in the world. We need to spread the Good News that there is One who can satisfy all the hungers of the human heart. All it takes to approach him is “Faith”. Simple, but not easy! Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Next Saturday, August 15, is the feast of the Assumption of our Mother Mary. Although not a day of obligation this year, we turn to her always for help. We will have a special Mass at 12:05 pm that day to beg her intercession. God bless you, Fr. John Francis

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JOINING THE CHURCH?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the way that the Church today welcomes her new adult members. Interested persons meet during the course of the year, beginning in September, to learn about the Catholic church - her beliefs and practices. Non-Catholics, and Catholics who have not received Eucharist or Confirmation, as well as people who wish to support others as sponsors on their journey of faith, are invited to leave their names in the Rectory Office (718-969-3226).
