From the Pastor’s Desk….

The second reading is taken from the Letter of St. James. He was the first bishop of Jerusalem (Acts: 15:13) and is also called the "brother of the Lord" (Gal 1:19). The Letter of James has been categorized as an ethical handbook because of its practical nature and its emphasis on social justice issues.

Be doers of the word, not hearers only The main purpose of the letter of James is to urge Christians to be steadfast in faith and show their faith in action. St. James says that faith without works is dead (Jam 2:17) barren (Jam 2:20) and has no power to save any-one (Jam 2:14).

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your-selves” (Jam 1:22).

We are called to practice pure Religion For James, proper service to God is not reducible to a set of beliefs or litur-gical rites; it includes a practical service to others such as care for or-phans and widows. Pure religion reaches out to the needy and takes practical steps to provide for their welfare.

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world” (Jam 1:26-27).

To be truly clean is to be clean of heart In today’s Gospel Jesus makes it clear that traditions are essential for all human beings because only through them the beliefs, values and precepts of a particular community are handed on to the next generation. Our tradi-tions are supposed to renew and deepen our faith. Our traditions reveal who we are. Jesus criticizes those traditions that are cut off from the faith that gives them life. He warned those people who have the tendency “to disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition”. His message is that a pure heart is more important than clean hands. God looks into our innermost hearts and is not deceived by our lip-service.

God bless you,

Fr. John Francis
