ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY Are days of
FASTING (one full meal and two small ones
For those from ages 18-59) and
ABSTINENCE (no meat for those age 14 and older).
The Fridays of Lent are also days of
abstinence from meat.
From the Pastor’s Desk… The Scriptures contain countless stories on the faith journey of God's people, both in the Old and
New Testaments. Today, the second Sunday of Lent, we read about Abraham, often referred to as
the "father of faith", who demonstrated once again his absolute faith in God as he unquestion-
ingly prepared to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac. Many questions must have run through his
mind, but in faith, he was ready to follow God's command. God was pleased with Abraham's
response, spared Isaac and blessed Abraham abundantly for his obedience. How do we respond
to God's "demands" from us that seem unreasonable?
In the second reading, Paul spoke of perseverance in faith. In the early days of the Church, there
was much persecution and many of the converts feared losing their lives. Addressing this issue,
Paul told the community that" If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Rom 8:31). He
further assured them that God, "who did not spare his own Son, but handed him over for us all"
would do everything to save them and supply all their needs. They had absolutely nothing to fear.
On what or on whom do we rely for security in our lives?
Today´s Gospel reading from Mark narrated Jesus' Transfiguration on Mount Tabor. He revealed
the real meaning of His call, life and mission to Peter, John and James so they could follow and
continue to spread Jesus' message upon coming back from the mountain top. In addition, Jesus
showed Himself in his glory to strengthen their faith since in a few days, they would witness
Jesus' voluntary suffering, passion and death on the cross. How do we react to suffering? How
does Jesus' Transfiguration inspire us to live our lives so we, too, can share His glory one
day?
The first and second readings this Sunday assured God's people of His compassionate caring. We
too can be assured that this same God loves us and cares for each and every one of us! And as
God proclaimed in the Gospel “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him” (Mk 9:6), He likewise
enjoins us to be attentive to Jesus' voice. Lent is a special time to do that. Let us keep in mind
that He alone has the words of eternal life.
God bless you!

Second Sunday of lent
Over the years St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church has been greatly blessed with adults seeking full initiation in the Catholic Church, those, Christian but not Catholic, desiring to come into full communion in the Catholic Church, and those completing their initiation through Confirmation and the Eucharist. All of this is an integral part of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). During Lent there are a number of ritual celebra-tions as these adults continue their intense preparation for the Easter Sacraments. This past Sunday during the 10:45 Mass, we witnessed two of our adults celebrate the Rite of Sending to the Rite of Election in Brooklyn with Bishop DeMarzio presid-ing. On page 16 of this week’s “Tablet” we see our two catechu-mens, now Elect: in the very first row is Thusara Welagedara with his sponsor and Angel Melendez along with Emy Pun-salan, one of our RCIA catechists. This Sunday our candidates will celebrate their Rite of Sending for the Celebration of their Call to Continuing Conversion. In the past both these celebra-tions took place on the first Sunday of Lent at the former Bishop Ford High School. However, this year these celebrations are being celebrated separately: last Sunday only for the catechu-mens (those non-baptized) and this Sunday the parishes have a choice of sending their candidates to one of three sites: St. Tho-mas, Flatlands; Immaculate Conception, Douglaston; and our own dear St. Nicholas of Tolentine. So this afternoon at 3:00 we are hosting this celebration with Bishop Witold Mroziewski presiding. A number of times in these rituals, we are reminded of the parish community’s support of prayer for our Elect and Candidates. Please try to consciously remember them in prayer.
God bless you!
Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director of Faith Formation
