Page 2 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ,
Someone once said that to be a Saint is to allow the life of Christ to shine through ours. This is a good
reminder as we prepare to celebrate “All Saints Day” on Tuesday of this week. In addition this whole
week offers a good dose of significant celebrations that touch on the richness of our faith tradition. On
Monday, October 31, we have Halloween, Tuesday is All Saints Day and Wednesday is All Souls Day.
To a great extent, these celebrations remind us of the old Catholic teaching regarding the three catego-
ries of church members: militant, suffering and triumphant.
Halloween, derived from all hallows, means, all saints. It is the eve of All Saints Day, which falls on November
1st. Our tradition views the costumes worn on Halloween as a way in which our beloved dead are transformed into
saints. It also symbolizes where we, the church’s militants, are engaged in fighting against the forces of evil so we will
be transformed into saints.
Through the liturgical year, we celebrate the feasts and solemnities of many saints. On November 1st, the univer-
sal church acknowledges and celebrates all our brothers and sisters, of all times and cultures, who have been trans-
formed and are participating in the wedding feast of heaven. These are the church’s triumphant. They stand before
God’s throne in heaven singing his praises. These could be your family members, friends and relatives, named or un-
named. “… after this I saw a great multitude impossible to count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing
before the throne and before the lamb. They were wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their
hands…” (Rev. 7:9ff). The white robes indicate cleansing, while the palm branches are indicative of their triumph. These
are all saints.
On All Soul’s Day, we remember to pray for all the departed who are passing through the final stage of God’s
mercy and purification in order to make it to heaven (1 Jn 5:16ff). These are church’s suffering. Please look at our bulle-
tin for more information on how you can personalize this feast for your loved ones during Mass. We will have three
Masses for all Saints and two for all Souls.
In all these celebrations, we remember all three groups. The militants on earth pray for the suffering in purgato-
ry, and when those suffering in purgatory make it to heaven as the triumphant, they, in turn, pray and intercede for us,
the militant on earth. This is called the communion of all saints that is the union of the three categories of church mem-
bers.
During November, please remember to offer Masses for your loved ones who have gone before us so that when
they get to heaven, they, in turn, may pray for us.
Thank you and may God Bless You.
Fr. Godwin.
The Passionist Missionaries goal is to promote the memory of the Passion of Jesus Christ by witnessing and preaching to the sufferings of our time. Through their projects in Kenya, they are able to evangelize and promote integral human development. Their projects involve programs and activities for alleviating poverty and foster social justice and economic empowerment of the com-munities that they serve. The have 40 seminarians, the run two orphanages with 70 orphans, and they support poor widows in their missions. They organize and preach retreats for both religious and the lay faithful. Your generous support continues their mission affecting a positive change in people’s daily lives and a hope for a better tomorrow.
Next weekend, November 5th and 6th, Fr. Gilbert Omolo, CP a Passionist priest from Kenya will be here to share with us his mission story.

St. Patrick will be remembering all our recently deceased at the All Souls Day Mass on Wednesday November 2, 2016 at 7:00PM. We would like to invite any parishioner who has lost a family member in the past year to partici-pate in the candle lighting ceremony. There will be can-dles to light, but we also will be offering a Memorial Votive candle that you can take home for a donation of $4.00. This candle will have the deceased’s name written upon it.
We will also have a memorial setup in front of the Blessed Mother’s statue, where we will display pictures of your loved ones who passed away in the last year. If you would like to have your loved one’s picture displayed, please bring a picture (no larger than 5x7) the week-end of October 29th/30th. We will leave the display up for the month of November and pictures may be taken home the weekend of November 26th/27th. Please put your name and address on the back of the picture.
In order that we may make plans for the number of people who plan to participate at the November 2nd Mass, please fill out the form below and return it to the parish office or contact Carleen Murphy at 815-385-0025 or [email protected] for more information.

Vocations Corner:
Trust in God! Unfortunately, fear is a common element that is present in many of our lives. For some of us this may be a big prob-lem while for others it may just creep in from time to time. The tough thing about fear is that it takes our focus away from the Lord. The key to beating this difficulty in our life is to TRUST in God. This is, of course, easier said than done, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't put in the effort to grow in our level of trust. The key to trusting is to remind ourselves that God has a plan for our lives. When we find ourselves paralyzed with fear, we have to stop and ask ourselves, “Do I believe that God is a good and loving God who desires my fulfillment and well being?” Hopefully, the answer is “Yes!” From that point we simply have to apply that principle of God’s good plans for us to whatever situation we may be in. We need to cling to the known (God’s loving goodness) in the midst of the unknown (whatever may be causing our fear). With a newfound trust we will be better able to discern God’s will and to carry out his plan for our daily lives!
Jubilee Year of Mercy Thirty-First Sunday Ordinary Time
Last Sunday's Gospel gave us a tax collector's beautiful prayer to take with us from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Today, another tax collector's
encounter with Jesus offers a comforting memory to cher-ish, but also a challenging mission to embrace. Zacchaeus' short stature (see Luke 19:3) matched how contemptible, socially and spiritually, Zacchaeus' religious acquaintances considered tax collectors to be. Jesus counters that judg-ment with mercy. Radical sin meets unmerited grace. God seeks and finds the lost; a sinner's home becomes salva-tion's house. The sinner "quickly" welcomes salvation "with joy" (19:6), while the righteous grumble judgmentally at God's mercy. Mercy challenges us, too. Like Zacchaeus, we have been sought and found by Jesus, called by name to welcome Jesus into our heart's home. Therefore, we must go forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy as "missionaries of mercy," seeking our fellow sinners with Jesus, receiving them with joy (see 19:6) as cherished brothers and sisters, and joyfully offering our judgment-free hospitality as Jesus' own "Welcome home!" --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. A well-stocked pantry and refrigerator is something many of us take for granted. But for others, there is rarely enough food to last the week, no matter how carefully each purchase and meal is planned. For those struggling to
feed their families, St. Vincent dePaul is there to help. Vin-centians provide bags of food and a gift certificate to either Aldi’s or Angelo’s on each visit to a neighbor in need. These food deliveries and compassionate prayer, help lift families, feeding their spirits and their stomachs in their time of need. Proverb 22:9 Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.

Knights Ask For Support of “Holiday Meals”
Knights of Columbus Council 1288 will again be raising funds to provide holiday meals to those in need in our community. St. Patrick
Council 16446 will be assisting 1288 in this holiday pro-ject with food distribution and fundraising. This will be the 9th year the Knights will undertake this rewarding and much-appreciated project. Their mission is simple: they raise money to purchase food and, through a partnership with Meijers Stores, they are able to stretch the money that is donated a long way. The food is packed in such a way that each family receives everything they need to prepare a proper holiday meal. One hundred percent of the funds donated is used to purchase food that benefits needy families in our own McHenry area. Any amount you can give, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated. The distribution of the Thanksgiving meals will be on Saturday, November 19th and the Christmas meal distribution will be on Saturday December 17th. Everyone is welcome to come help sort and pack the meals at the Church of Holy Apostles. Please mail your donation to Knights of Columbus Council 1288, PO Box 148, McHenry, IL 60051. The Knights hope that they can count on your support.
