VESPERS Commemoration of All Faithful Departed October 31, 2021 at 5 pm
ST PAUL’S CHURCH IN ENGLEWOOD an Episcopal Parish in the Diocese of Newark
and the Anglican Communion
WELCOME TO ST. PAUL’S We are glad you are here, and we invite you to enter fully into worship this evening. We invite you to ask questions, explore, and to make yourself known to those around you. Please pick up a newsletter and any other information about the parish located at the entrances to the church, and join us for a reception following the service. Help us make this a place where God’s grace is freely shared by all.
VESPERS & ALL SOULS’ DAY The opening rites of the Book of Common Prayer are commonly called “offices,” that, is, daily services of prayer and praise rooted in the Jewish and early Christian traditions of saying prayers at fixed hours of the day (Acts 10:9, 16:25). In the Anglican tradition, most cathedrals, monastic houses, and collegiate chapels celebrate these services daily. As we end the day with prayer and song, we give thanks for the blessings we have received and ask for God’s guidance as we look forward to the week ahead.
The Commemoration of All Faithful Departed commonly called All Souls, has been celebrated by this parish since the mid-twentieth century. Our custom to remember those who have gone before us during a public service of thanksgiving has traditionally included a major offering from our choirs. We invite you to enter into the music and prayers, allow them to transform you, and to give thanks for the blessings of the saints who have gone before us, the saints among us, and the saints yet to come.
We give Thanks for the musical leadership and contributions for this commemoration of All the Faithful Departed
from Cynthia Powell, organist; Faye Timmer, cantor; and Elliot Roman, flutist.
VESPERS Please stand when the procession begins. The Officiant says
Officiant God has claimed us as his own. All He called us from our darkness into the light of his day. Officiant This is the will of him that sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given
me, All And I will raise them up at the last day. Officiant Lord God, creator of all, you have made us creatures of this earth, but have also
promised us a share in life eternal. According to your promises, may all who have died in the peace of Christ come with your saints to the joys of your kingdom, where there will be neither sorrow nor pain, but life everlasting.
All Amen.

THE LESSONS The Salvation that is to Come Isaiah 25:6-10 Reader On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a
feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. For the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain.
COME AND FILL OUR HEARTS WITH YOUR PEACE Taizé Chant
The Eulogy of the Ancestors Ecclesiasticus 44:1-10, 13-14 Reader Let us now sing the praises of famous men, our ancestors in their generations. The
Lord apportioned to them great glory, his majesty from the beginning. There were those who ruled in their kingdoms, and made a name for themselves by their valor; those who gave counsel because they were intelligent; those who spoke in prophetic oracles; those who led the people by their counsels and by their knowledge of the people’s lore; they were wise in their words of instruction; those who composed musical tunes, or put verses in writing; rich men endowed with resources, living peacefully in their homes—all these were honored in their generations, and were the pride of their times. Some of them have left behind a name, so that others declare their praise. But of others there is no memory; they have perished as though they had never existed; they have become as though they had never been born, they and their children after them. But these also were godly men, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten; Their offspring will continue forever, and their glory will never be

blotted out. Their bodies are buried in peace, but their name lives on generation after generation.
LAUDATE DOMINUM (PRAISE GOD, ALL YE PEOPLES) Taizé Chant
A Great Cloud of Witnesses Hebrews 12:1-3 Reader Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay
aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.
JESUS, REMEMBER THEM Taizé Chant
The Tree of Life Revelation 22:1-5 Reader Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing
from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there anymore. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

THE LORD IS MY LIGHT Taizé Chant
A HOMILY
A HYMN O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go Hymnal 1940 #435 O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee; I give thee back the life I owe, that in thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be.
O Light that followest all my way, I yield my flickering torch to thee; my heart restores its borrowed ray, that in thy sunshine's blaze its day may brighter, fairer be.
O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow thru the rain, and feel the promise is not vain, that morn shall tearless be.
O Cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee; I lay in dust life's glory dead, and from the ground there blossoms red life that shall endless be.
Please stand

A COMMEMORATION OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED
Officiant The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;they are new every morning;great is your faithfulness, O Lord our God.
All The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore will I hope in him. Officiant Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, from whose love we cannot be parted, either
by death or life: hear our prayers and thanksgivings for all whom we remember today; fulfil in them the purpose of your love; and bring us all, with them, to your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen.
