"Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant." In the wake of James and John's vanity, Jesus offers this directive. These two apostles had been thinking in terms of prominence, glory, and worldly honor. They wanted their association with Jesus to lead to public recognition and respect as they took their places at his right and left. But Jesus put them in their place. As was typical of so many of his teachings, Jesus upset the status quo. He told his followers that, although "great ones make their authority over them felt ... it shall not be so among you." Then, he put forward this clear image of the servant leader: "Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all." As followers of Christ, this instruction applies to us as well. We are called to the humility of service that seeks neither personal glory nor gain. We are called to use what authority we may have in the world for the benefit of our brothers and sisters, not for the sake of stroking our own egos. It's easy to pat ourselves on the back for the good works that we do--to think that we are superior Christians, that others owe us a debt of gratitude, or that our names should be engraved on a public placard in some noteworthy hall. But Jesus calls us to a different standard--the one he himself exemplified through his life of service. At the same time, today's Gospel gives us cause to meditate upon our association with Jesus and what we hope to get out of it. Why are we Christian? Are we only after the glory of heaven? Are we afraid to publicly profess our faith when it might hurt our reputation? Or are we in this for the love of the Lord, who came into this world "to serve and to give his life as a ransom" for us? 29º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Cada domingo Dios nos brinda una oportunidad más para comprender su palabra y sus acciones.

LPI, Inc.

Often people attend Mass at All Souls for several years, but never register. Registering here is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of All Souls Church. Being a

registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register, you need to complete a which registration card. These may be found narthex of the church or chapel, the parish office during the week or online at our parish website: www.allsoulssanford.org. Why not sign up today? We love our new parishioners!

It is essential that we cultivate a living faith in a world that is increasingly hostile to faith and family alike. As St. John Paul II affirmed, "the family is the first and vital cell of society" and

Let us pray during this month of October for the repose of the soul of: Father Philip Stegman—October 3, 1988 Father Neil Sager—October 4, 1978 Fr. Joseph Nolon—October 5, 2015 Father Paul Kamide—October 11, 2010 Father Bernard Hickey—October 13, 1985 Fr. Louis Dunleaux—October 13, 1993 Fr. Patrick J. O’Reilly—October 27, 2002 Fr. Charles Bartok—October 30, 2008

Prayer for our Deceased Priests

O God, you raised your servants, to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ, according to the Order of Melchisedech, giving them the sublime power to offer the Eternal Sacrifice, to bring the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ down upon the altar, and to absolve the sins of men in your own Holy Name. We beseech you to reward their faithfulness and to forget their faults, admitting them speedily into your holy Presence, there to enjoy forever the recompense of their labors. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
