Inadequate Facilities

Patrick Henry High School— 2,500 students, 1,000+ waiting list. Built 40 years ago during Baby Boom in

1968–Rushed construction. Prop. O and Prop. MM failed to

address original deficiencies. Portable classrooms on site since

1968, now number 24—None to Code. Community-identified priorities

support engineering and theater tech.

Engineering Program

Nearly 350 students now enrolled, requiring larger, better facilities.

Five-fold growth in last two years. 500+ is projected increase. Scholarship opportunities now limited

by inadequate facilities for ACE Mentoring Projects.

Competition with charters risks loss of student enrollment.

Engineering Lab Facilities

Unsafe workspaces. Back storage room has presses and students work outside on one workbench with drills, etc.

No computer space —students seated tall/short to fit in like sardines.

Conversion of current weight training room requires only a remodel of existing facilities.

Saves on cost and will remain close to other engineering classes.

Production and Managerial Arts--Enrollment Surge

Over 480 students now enrolled. 65+ students are enrolled right now in

Theatre Tech 1-2 and 3-4. Growth limited by inadequate facilities.

130 students in orchestra/band courses. 130 students in drama courses 80+ students in choral courses Student requesting dance, but no room. Not all students can go to SCPA.

Theater Tech/Production Management Program

Rapid growth in past two years. Rapidly expanding relationship with local

community performing arts programs mean expanded student opportunity.

Nexus with business and engineering programs (electrical and structural) make Theater Tech an efficient choice.

Production Management Pathway courses and Teacher identified for IASTE Training.* Courses begin 2010-11.

* International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees

Theatre Tech/Production Management Facilities

Unsafe facilities. Stage is too small; students sit 6 inches from the edge during performances. Cramped wings make technical work dangerous.

Scene construction done outside on planters with power tools.

Night performances forced to use car lights for lighting when stage is double booked for parent meeting.

“Cafetorium” is smaller than elementary school auditorium at Ocean Beach Elementary with 240 students.

Cafeteria is closed regularly--Only location for assemblies, awards, etc., so set ups close cafeteria to students. Result: fewer food purchases.

Does not meet student needs of a large, comprehensive high school.

No pit for band during frequent musical productions. Performances are crowded and seating is an embarrassment. Parents/students choose private schools.

Funding Sources

Prop S identified funds for auditorium. CTE 1D Grant—PHHS has never been

included in previous grant requests. Community meetings held on Long

Range Facilities and Prop. S Design Taskforce both identify these programs and auditorium as community priority.

On-Site Administrative Expertise: Vice Principal is a contractor who works closely with project managers. $500,000 saved from Prop MM for quad landscape project. Savings also in Prop. S.

Conclusion

Historically inadequate facilities threaten the future of current students and student enrollment.

Community priorities and partnership opportunities are available now, but may vanish without support.

Both programs move Patrick Henry High School forward.
