OCTOBER 2014 The Official Newsletter of FRIENDS OF THE MOUSE VOLUME 3, ISSUE 10 ast year, following the October meeting, several members of Friends of the Mouse attended a Southern California tradition, the annual Anaheim Halloween Parade. The members were so impressed, with what they saw, that the idea of transitioning from simply parade spectators to parade participants began to take shape. This year, the 90 th for the parade, Friends of the Mouse will join local businesses, schools, other organizations and several amazing floats as we march for the first time in this holiday delight. The parade began in 1924 as way to help discourage youths from participating in mischievous and sometime damage causing pranks. By the 1950s, the parade was drawing crowds numbering close to 150,000 prompting the LA Times to describe the event as “biggest Halloween party in the nation.” Following a period of waning interest in the last decade plus, the parade has been returning to its former glory. Thanks in large part to Disney favorites and Anaheim residents, Kevin & Jody, as well as numerous volunteers and other participants. November 22, 2014 – Bring your checkbooks and get ready to take home some amazing Disney memorabilia from the annual Friends of the Mouse auction.

 December 13, 2014 – Plans

continue to take shape for the traditional Friends of the Mouse holiday event. Look for details in next month’s newsletter.

 January 24, 2015 – Author and

podcaster Jeff Heimbuch brings us “Five Legged Goats;” a presentation that takes a look at the hidden-in-plain sight details and tributes, at the Disney theme parks, to those that helped create the magic.

 Unless otherwise noted,

meetings are held on the fourth Saturday of each month at The Garden Grove Historical Society at 12174 Euclid St. in Garden Grove, CA 92840.

Meetings begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. with a social hour beginning at 11:30 a.m.

This month we will be celebrating Halloween and preparing to participate in the Anaheim Halloween Parade. The Friends of the Mouse will be walking the parade route as the “Zombie Tourists of Anaheim.” Many members signed up at last month’s meeting; more are welcome to join. Those who do not wish to march the parade route (it’s about the distance from Paradise Pier to Toontown) will enjoy viewing the parade.

The parade officially steps off at 6pm at Broadway and West Street in Anaheim. It moves up Broadway to the east, all the way to Anaheim Boulevard. There it takes a short turn south, ending in Farmer’s Park. Club members who wish to view the parade should plan to leave the meeting before 5pm. Drive north on Harbor Boulevard, then turn left (east) on Santa Ana Street. About two blocks in; look for parking near Citron Street. Members will be gathering at the corner of Citron and Broadway to view the parade. Please note that shortly before 6pm, the police will close off Citron, and the street itself will be available for seating or standing. You are free to bring folding chairs or blankets to sit on. Early arrivals should save space for members who are late.

For those who plan to participate, please bring along a costume and any Halloween makeup you may have. We plan to march as fun zombies, so please nothing gruesome or unpleasant. You should appear to be a tourist who just happened to be caught in the zombie apocalypse while

vacationing at one of Anaheim’s popular destinations. Your costume should consist of “distressed” clothing and appropriate props (anything you might be carrying in a world-famous theme park). We will have a certain number of items available at the meeting.

Please keep checking our Facebook page for updates, and looking for any messages from the club via email.

This month’s food break will feature Chili Bowls. Hospitality Coordinator, Trisha Thompson, requests members who wish to contribute a complementing item, please email 999haunts@ sbcglobal.net, with the item you intend to bring.

Friends of the Mouse would like to thank Corky and Donnie Lynch for cleaning the Disney Garage for this month’s meeting. For more

September’s guest speaker, Ira Hearshen shared with us stories from his 30 plus years of arranging and orchestrating TV and film scores. While he worked on a few Disney live action films in the late 80s and 90s, the bulk of his Disney related work began with the Pixar film A BUGS LIFE (1998.) The highlight of his Pixar career has been his work on the MONSTERS, INC. franchise. This includes creating the score for the title sequence for the film as well as the score for the short film MIKE’S NEW CAR and Tokyo Disneyland’s MONSTERS, INC. RIDE AND GO SEEK attraction.

Currently, Hearshen is working in New York on a couple of Broadway shows. His passion for working in the film industry has faded a bit, although he would open to coming back to work on future animated films for Disney because he likes that Disney is still a studio that produces its own films. However, the call he’s really waiting for is to work on another theme park attraction. Photos by Gary Marlis

For September’s food break, Hospitality Coordinator, Trisha Thompson and her team organized an impressive salad bar featuring contributions for a number of members including: Dave Clark(éclairs), Judi & Steve Haydu(Hickory Farms sausage and cheese), Patty Humphrey(Rice Krispy Treats), Debbie & Gary Marlis(chicken salad and crackers), Jamie Marsh(various toppings), Paul & Charlynn Schnebelen(diced ham and pepperoni), Doug Temple(sparkling cider), Jo Vanderpool(sunflower seeds.)

Friends of the Mouse would like to wish all of members who were born in October, a very Happy Birthday.

September’s opportunity drawing was among the largest the club has ever had with over 300 tickets sold and seemingly almost as many items for the lucky winners to choose from.

60 years ago on the night of October 27th, “Uncle Walt” came into homes across America to introduce two new ventures both called Disneyland. The first was Disneyland the place and the second was Disneyland the show. The Disneyland TV series was created for ABC as a way to help finance Walt’s dream of a place that adults and their children could have fun at together. Each week, the show presented various programs tied to the different lands of Disneyland the place. These programs included serialized stories such as Davy Crockett or The Swamp Fox. Sometimes a Disney theatrical film would be presented in two parts or in a condensed format. Several programs took the audience behind the scenes at the Walt Disney Studios to witness how their favorite or upcoming shorts and features were made. And, of course, regular progress reports about the building of Disneyland the place were also presented. Aside from a couple of brief absences in the 80s and 90s, Disneyland the show remained on the air on various networks and under various names for 53 season, making it the longest airing prime time television show in history.

cleaning the garage each month. This is not a labor intensive cleaning and supplies are provided. If you are interested in signing up please see Director-at-Large, Mark Salvaggi or any other board member at this month’s meeting for more information.

OPPORTUNITY DRAWING AND ANNUAL AUCTION The monthly opportunity drawing and the annual auction are two of the ways Friends of the Mouse raises funds for club activities such as the monthly meetings, annual picnic and other special events. There are two ways you can participate. The first is by bidding on auction items and

Friends of the Mouse is an amazing organization that is made of wonderful people coming together to share in their passion for Disney. However a club like this cannot function without participation from members like you. Here are a few ways you can “help out the mouse.”

CLEANING THE DISNEY GARAGE When Walt Disney first arrived in California, his first studio was the garage at his Uncle Robert’s house. That very garage is now located on the grounds of The Garden Grove Historical Society. As part of the agreement for our monthly meeting space, Friends of the Mouse takes responsibility for

purchasing opportunity drawing tickets. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The second way is by donating items to either the opportunity drawing or the auction. To donate an item, please see our auction coordinators, Tami Rosalas or Diane Sebbo for more info.

REFRESHMENTS At each month’s meeting Hospitality Coordinator, Trisha Thompson, prepares a themed menu of refreshments. The theme will be announced in each month’s newsletter and all members are welcome to bring an item fitting to that month’s theme. For more info regarding a particular month’s theme or to let Trisha know what you plan to bring, please email her at: 999haunts @sbcglobal.net.

Toys for Tots was created in Los Angeles in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR. In 1948 Walt Disney created the first promotional poster for the program. It featured Santa with a bag full of toys. At the bottom of the poster was a small three car train inscribed with the words “Toys for Tots.” This three car train logo is still used today and is the trademark of Toys for Tots. The logo incorporated two of Walt’s passions… his love for children and trains. The Walt Disney Company has been a strong supporter of the program ever since. Visit toysfortots.org to find out more about this great organization.

Families Forward is an organization committed to helping local Orange County families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Their programs help families gain the skills and tools they need to stabilize, and regain or maintain their self-sufficiency and provide stability for children. Items requested include canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, rice, pasta, soups, plain rice, baby food and formula, and diapers (medium and large). Anything that is not perishable is welcome. More information can be found at families-forward.org
