Seven or eight years ago, I remember
feeling overtaken by too many shades of
brown.
My husband and I had recently
purchased our irst home together. Our
walls were tan, our couch was chocolate
brown, our rug over our wood loors
was beige, and our kitchen cabinets
were maple. he only pops of color came
from a couple of throw pillows. And
along with what seemed like two-thirds
of the rest of the world, we also had a
red focal wall. I’ve always loved design,
color and decorating, but there was
nothing creative about our new space.
I immediately regretted the paint color.
I couldn’t help but think it looked like a
bad makeup foundation.
We didn’t end up staying in the house
long. Our quickly growing family and a
job change led us to rent out our home
for a couple of years. We moved back
Have Your Way With Gray
in temporarily in 2014 to make some
improvements and prepare the house for
sale. When I walked in, the house I had
“updated” just ive years before already
looked very dated.
Isn’t it crazy how quickly trends change
and our styles evolve?
Today, with all things seemingly rustic,
industrial, coastal or farmhouse style,
gray and coastal blues are hot precisely
because they’re cool. hey lend a soothing
palette to a room that in turn serves to
warm and relax the space. And natural
sunlight seems to be their best friend.
his trend is fascinating to me. I’m
curious to know if the overstimulation
from our devices, constant media babble
and the pace of everyday life has led us to
a much more neutral palette. It may not
be true for everybody, but as a mother of
three children under the age of 5 living in
an age of graphic overload, I admit that I
need soothing grays and calming blues in
my life!
So when my husband and I rolled up
our sleeves to prepare to paint, we settled
on Benjamin Moore’s Northern Clifs. It
is a warmer gray with a dark, olive green
root color, but with cathedral ceilings
and an abundance of large windows, the
natural light combined with the color to
create the perfect neutral for the space.
In these photos, the staging is deinitely
not perfect, but we worked with what
we had. Northern Clifs balanced well
with the homemade white linen window
panels and the white board-and-batten
wall feature. he room became warm and
welcoming but also bright and airy. he
house sold in just two days, so I guess the
updates and staging worked well!
When choosing any color, be sure to
look at the entire color progression swatch
to see the root color. If the darkest color on

the swatch is green, your color will have a
green undertone; if it is blue, it will have a
blue undertone. My current favorite grays
have a beige or brown undertone.
Another note of caution: Be sure to test
your color in the space.
his is especially advised for grays
because gray is hugely afected by lighting,
and it relects the colors around it.
he great thing about decorating is
that it’s not permanent. Remember: Paint
can be changed, decor is temporary, and
nobody really knows what color trends
will come.
For now, thanks to its welcoming
versatility, I am happy to have hopped on
the gray bandwagon. My husband and
I are building a new house, and we have
already decided that our dominant wall
color will be Useful Gray by Sherwin-
Williams.
Paint color is an inexpensive
proposition. It can make a big impact with
a small price tag. And if you keep the air
ventilated and use precaution, painting
can be a family afair. So get out the old
T-shirts and the blue tape, dust of the
brushes, and hit the paint aisle of your
favorite hardware store.
Keep in mind that grays and cool blues
are trending, but ultimately, no two people
are alike. So choose paint color based on
what makes you feel calm and happy in
your space.

your style.
Dura Supreme recently rolled out their
Personal Paint Match Program. With this
system, you are able to choose any of
Sherwin-Williams’ 1,500 colors, and they’ll
paint your cabinetry for you, creating the
perfect match. “Painted inishes in general
are very on-trend for home interiors
and kitchens,” said Karen Wistrom, vice
president of marketing for Dura Supreme.
“White paint is the absolute number one
seller. Soft neutrals like French gray or
neutral taupe are very popular as well,
but we are deinitely seeing homeowners
choosing bolder accent colors.”
Paint your main kitchen cabinets in
softer tones and pick a bolder color for
your island or hood, leaving the rest of
the space fairly neutral. his allows you
to have fun with diferent shades while
still maintaining a timeless look. Wistrom
adds that by painting a portion of your
kitchen cabinetry with an accent color,
you are essentially creating what looks like
a freestanding piece of furniture. he sky
is the limit when choosing which pieces
to paint. Wistrom says that mudrooms,
mantles and hoods are all great places to
consider adding a pop of color.

With so many variations on shades of white, the Paint match Program makes inding the “perfect white” to blend beautifully with looring and countertops an easy task.
you have found a shade that inspires
you, simply provide Dura Supreme
with a Sherwin-Williams paint number.
hey will take that number and create a

will look like up close and in person. You
can decide whether you love it or need to
go back to the drawing board. Once your
color decision is made, Dura Supreme will
build and paint your custom cabinets to
match the color of your choice.
here is a huge beneit to deciding on
the colors and painting them before they
are installed. Wistrom explains, “here is
simply a big diference between industrial
coatings and what is used in a residential
application. In our factory, your cabinetry
is painted in a dust-free environment; no
imperfections will be showing up.” Dura
Supreme also uses an industrial spraying
system and binding coats that ensure a
durable surface that needs no further
maintenance. In fact, once your cabinets
are installed, all they will need is an
occasional wipe-down with a damp cloth
and mild soap, just like any other surface.
With a lifetime guarantee and the
perfect paint selection, your cabinets will
be turning heads for years to come.

Q: Tim: We are preparing
to build a new home, and
we wanted to know what is
meant by “customization” in
new homes today?
A: You may have heard the term
“customization” in your research for
your new home. It typically means the
process of making alterations to the loor
plan or exterior appearance of a home to
relect your particular taste, lifestyle and
location.
But a subtle yet equally important
variation on that term is emerging within
home design and building. Put simply, this
newer usage of “customization” expresses
that new homes today are—by design—
better able to adapt to the changing needs
Build for Today,Customize for the Future
VIEWPOINT
of their owners after they’ve moved in
and for years to come.
his kind of customization has its
roots in architectural features such
as great rooms and so-called “lex”
spaces that some builders now ofer.
But true customization requires a more
thoughtful approach to the loor plan,
material choices and future lifestyle
changes than simply including a room
that allows lexibility in its use.
Obviously rooms such as the kitchen
and bathrooms are spaces dedicated to
a particular use. But there’s no reason
that a dining room can’t eventually
become a home oice and then switch
back or become something else down
the road, depending on what the family
wants and needs.
More dramatically, consider a back
room—properly designed—that could
evolve from a simple bedroom into a den,
home oice or studio apartment and
eventually into a irst-loor master suite as
the owners age and tire of climbing stairs
to their bedroom.
Similarly, a storage area next to a
second-loor master suite could, over
time and if properly designed, become
another bedroom or swap with the
master bedroom, which could turn into
an upstairs family room or oice, private
sitting room or home gym.
hese examples are practical and can
also be cost-efective—if your builder has
the forethought to rough in plumbing
and other mechanical systems. his level
of customization could set the stage for
a future guest apartment with a small
kitchen and a private entry. Another

build new homes, we also like the idea
of building long-lasting homes that can

ongoing maintenance needs and

his newer kind of customization
works best in new homes. So when
selecting a homebuilder, seek out a
professional builder in the top 10 percent.
A common misconception is that the
top builders charge more than other
builders, but that’s almost never the case.
A top residential design-build irm such
as Design Builders, which specializes in
working with clients to design the loor

Builder and Designer Make a good Team
Fil the Grade and Folow the Light
WRITTEN BY MARY NESTOR
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOE IMEL
LAYOUT BY M. SCHOFDING
There are
unexpected
elements
intertwined with a
more traditional
design. It is both
functional and
completely open to
interpretation.
Bowling Green builder Terry Davis
says he lost count of the truckloads of ill
going to level a pair of adjoining lots in a
wooded neighborhood of Cumberland
Trace, but the inal project is a testament
to perfect math. Cut into the hill, close
enough to Drakes Creek to take advantage
of a natural tree line, it was deliberately
sited for dramatic efect.
Clients Stephanie and Mike Baas wanted
an inviting, livable home with plenty of
room for friends and family. But they also
wanted high-end architectural details
and aesthetic intrigue that would blend
modern with traditional and indoors with
out. Davis, working closely with interior
designer Tara Coomer, certainly delivers
on that request.
“We started in the foyer, sort of walking
visually through the loor plan to igure
out what the space would allow and what
would be interesting,” says the designer.
To start the conversation, Coomer says
she simply asked the question, “Where do
we want light?” hen, working together
with client and builder, they “followed it
in.”
“In the foyer, for example, we wanted a
statement ixture because you can see it
from the road,” says the designer. And, as
she points out, when guests come in, they
see the foyer irst.
From there, they moved toward the
kitchen. Above the large granite island,
they selected a trio of oversized clear-glass
globe pendants, which in turn introduce
a more detailed spherical chandelier
An imposing ledge-stone chimney and wood-burning ireplace will warm the home on cool fall evenings. Above, the catwalk features a Juliet balcony.

Just off the kitchen, this cozy dining room features bench seating and a blend of wood tones.
By specifying white granite and white cabinets, the overhead pendant lighting becomes more dramatic. Glass subway tiles across the backsplash help illuminate the room.
Interior designer Tara Coomer selected architectural inishes to infuse the home’s muted gray palette with plenty of warmth and intrigue.

and look up. A sunken footprint helps
establish the space and adds intimacy
while high above in the vaulted ceiling,
diagonal beams give the efect of extending
straight through the ceiling like a post-
modern tepee.
he foyer is divided from the vaulted
great room by an overhead catwalk that
serves as a hallway connecting a pair of
upstairs bedrooms. A Juliet balcony is the
unexpected twist.
he main-level master suite features a
cofered ceiling and a walkout to a shotgun-
style porch that runs across the back of
the home and ofers easy access to the
backyard.
Sherwin-Williams’ Intellectual Gray
was used almost exclusively on interior
walls to create a seamless circulation
from one room to the next. In addition,
the loors are inished throughout with
utility-grade hickory cut in short lengths
and stained with a clear coat that allows
all the natural beauty and character of
this knotty wood to shine.
Coomer says she was trying to use
clean lines but still make a statement. She
helped her clients decide by narrowing
the selections and focusing on the idea
that architectural elements could both
complement and juxtapose one another.
“We wanted a modern feel, but if a
traditional person were to walk in, they
would still feel comfortable,” she explains.
he back deck includes a bump-out
dining area for the perfect open-air cofee
porch. Here the builder recommended
exotic Brazilian tigerwood for its
aesthetic impact and durability. Properly
maintained, it will remain lustrous and
durable for decades, and Davis says he
would have been disappointed to use

Downstairs in the walkout basement, the warmth of reclaimed brick walls and custom cabinets contrast with the impact of shop lighting and exposed ductwork.
An interior wall was replaced with wood beams and corrugated metal to add functional detail and create a more open circulation.
Custom wine cellars are the perfect example of form and function.

a man-made decking material in such a
natural setting.
On the lower level, a inished basement
reads like an urban loft. One-of-a kind
reclaimed brick accent walls, a stamped
stained concrete loor, exposed ductwork
and a unique transom made from corrugated
steel and cedar timbers are industrial
elements with a contemporary vibe.
he blueprint utilizes every inch of
available interior space. Rather than hide
random spaces with drywall, the builder
always looked for opportunities to frame the
additional space for closets and niches.
He worked directly with Brooks Cabinet
Shop to increase the home’s livability. here
are landings that were repurposed as study
areas for the kids and custom closets with
built-in hampers. Just of the kitchen, Davis
framed in a mudroom, a laundry room and
a pantry complete with a barn-style door
that slides open. None of those rooms are
square, but every inch of conditioned space
has been maximized.
Coomer says they still have some inishing
work to do. here are window treatments
and accents still to come, but for the most
part, the home is inished. As a licensed
interior designer, she can move easily from
architectural details to inal touches but
says she prefers those projects where she
is involved from the moment ground is
broken.
Davis says his litmus test involves not
only the form and function of the inished
home but whether or not the friendship
remains intact. He has been building
homes in Bowling Green for more than two
decades, and he and Mike Baas have been
friends since their high school days. Now,
after untold shovelfuls of dirt and a year
of nonstop decision-making, everybody is
happy. he home is lovely, and “we’re all still
friends,” says Davis.
A freestanding tub is a throwback to an earlier era, but the modern version eliminates the traditional claw foot pedestal in favor of clean lines and sleek design.

Although summer is fading fast, it's a wonderful time to create an equally fresh and bright living space in your home, and there is no greater inspiration for such a space than Mother Nature herself.
Color can transform a room instantly. Giving your living area a fresh coat of paint is a fast and easy way to revamp your home in a big way. Lake cottages and summer homes are the perfect places to get creative and play with diferent color schemes. I spoke with Andrea Magno, color and design expert for Benjamin Moore. Magno, who is well versed in the hues and shades of the ever-changing paint palette, encourages people to look outside their homes for their inspiration. “At the beach, a handful of shells or beach glass has colors that can form the color palette for an entire home,” she says. “Likewise, in the mountains, the lush foliage may inspire a palette of greens ranging from pale to deep, with room for accents that bring in personality.”
hat is what inspired Benjamin’s Moore’s color team to create stunning

By ANDREA BAUMGARDNER
I learned to cook in the midst of the
local and artisanal food movement
in California, very near ground zero—
San Francisco in the 1990s. Since then,
my mantra has been simple, fresh
ingredients, grown as near to the kitchen
as possible.
As of two years ago, I no longer work
in a restaurant. While this has been
odd enough and with many awkward
moments, the transition to shopping in
grocery stores and cooking on an electric
stove—which alerts the smoke detector if
a pan is hot enough to properly sear—has
been another education.
It is ininitely easier to cook in a
restaurant than to come home from work
and get food on the table within an hour.
Having previously underestimated home
cooking—how hard can it be to cook for
three if I am used to cooking for 40?—I
am beginning to recognize a place for
planning, prep lists and bulk food buying.
I also am learning the importance of a
freezer.
One of my freezer cheats is frozen peas.
hey aren’t always a good move, but when
they are, nothing is easier, and they taste
almost like fresh. Also, frozen peas are
available year-round, whereas fresh shell
peas rarely make it to local grocery stores
for more than a few weeks. Garden shell
peas don’t enjoy much longer of a season.
A package of frozen peas defrosts in
less than ive minutes in a colander. If I
am making pasta, risotto or fried rice—a
great option for the last-minute cook,
although my husband routinely advises
me that not every leftover works in a
wok—a handful of peas at the end adds
color and mild lavor.
Peas can be puréed with nuts and basil
and made into a tasty hybrid of hummus
and pesto. I have made pancake batters
out of them; the green can be a little
weird, but they pair wonderfully with
smoked trout or bacon. I also like this
adaptation of my 105-year-old grandma’s
pea salad. She insists on canned peas, for
which I am not yet prepared, and Velveeta.
Mine lacks her verve, but it reminds me of
spring and a garden, even if it comes out
of the freezer section.

Eighty years ago, New York disc jockey
Peter Tripp pulled a publicity stunt and
stayed awake for a marathon 201 hours.
It was the original wacky-morning-show
moment.
Since then, it has become a rite of
passage for DJs to promote—for better
or worse—a cause. hey host marathon
dancing. hey eat a ton of hot dogs. hey
live precariously perched on billboard
scafolding until the home team wins.
But rarely do their stunts lead to
meaningful change. So when local radio
personality Tony Rose proposed raising
donations for local school children by
living on a school bus until listeners illed
it with school supplies, he had no idea
that “Stuf the Bus” would grow to become
a catalyst for all types of volunteerism
and end up beneiting thousands of area
schoolchildren.
Now, 10 years later, on the last weekend
in July as the sun sets behind the stores
along Campbell Lane, Rose holds court in
a state-of-the-art hybrid school bus that
the district donated for the cause.
The Magic Bus Changes Outcomes for Bowling Green Kids

Tons of Fun: A decade of fundraising has left the crew
of Stuff the Bus volunteers older, wiser and richer in
spirit. This year, with help from individual donors,
corporate sponsors, and local businesses, STB raised enough to supply area school children with everything from crayons to clothes, backpacks, to ear buds. The event takes place
in late July and helps reill the coffers of Family Resource
Centers in and around Bowling Green.

Unlike his maiden voyage, Rose is now
landlocked—surrounded by buses. hat’s
because the irst bus became two buses,
then three, then four.
Every year for a decade over the
course of a four-day weekend, Rose and a
squadron of dedicated volunteers—most
of whom have been helping since day
one—collect and catalog enough school
supplies to make sure every child in
Bowling Green, Warren County, and much
of the outlying districts starts school with
the essentials.
“We didn’t know what we were getting
into,” Rose remembers. When volunteers
inished stuing that irst bus, their initial
reaction was, “Great stunt! People are
talking about it.”
“We started to see, wow, this is making
more of an impact than we thought it
would,” he says.
After stuing the bus, Rose and his team
coordinated and conducted the logistics
to get the donated supplies to the Family
Resource Centers on-site at area schools.
hat’s when Rose realized it was more
than a gimmick.
“here are kids out there who need this
stuf,” he remembers saying.
Very quickly he came to believe that
the world could be changed one box of
crayons at a time.
He says it’s not just the recipients who
beneit from the program. As Rose points
out, schoolteachers and districts have
been known to dig into their own pockets
to inance essential supplies. Now, thanks
to the donations garnered in the Stuf
the Bus fundraiser, that money can be
rerouted to help with capital expenditures,
ield trips and other educational costs
that beneit all the students, regardless of
income.
He also appreciates being able to help
schoolchildren “it in” on the irst day of
school. He calls it the “magic window” of
opportunity. When kids walk in prepared
with supplies, they’re dialed in. “hey’re
not ashamed or afraid to sit in the front
row,” he says.
On the other hand, Rose believes that if
a child has to walk in on the irst day with
no backpack, no pencils and no supplies,
his or her self-esteem is crushed. hey’re
sometimes bullied for being diferent,

and that can cause an escalating sense of
panic and isolation.
Rose is not the only volunteer who
has shepherded Stuf the Bus from its
stuntman inception to its current impact.
He credits friends, family and fellow
DJs with making the campaign such a
success. He appreciates the support of
Warren County businesses that pass the
hat among their employees and have
embraced Stuf the Bus as a worthy cause.
He cannot believe that Bluegrass Cellular
lets him commandeer their parking
lot for the duration. And he deinitely
appreciates the fact that the Kentucky
State Police and Warren County police
oicers keep an eye on their operation as
they sleep in buses full of booty along a
major commercial thoroughfare.
Rose says the campaign reached critical
mass in its fourth year, when a group of
savvy shoppers and coupon clippers—the
Kentucky Savings Group—volunteered
to help negotiate bulk purchases and
strategic buys. He says they can work
magic with those cash donations.
Now a decade older and many times
wiser, perched on the edge of the steps of
the bus and up since before dawn, Rose
seems both energized and humbled by the
impact of what began as a marketing ploy
for the morning guy.
“It’s not about me. It’s not about Tony
Rose,” he says. “It’s way more than a wacky
event. It became a labor of love. It became
like a mission trip. he community owns
Stuf the Bus, and, for lack of a better
term, I’m just babysitting.”
