The Oklahoma Senate and House override of Gov. Brad Henry’s veto of two abortion bills is a step in the right direction towards informing and educating pregnant women about the alternative to abortion. “LIFE” One of the laws will re-quire women to undergo an ultrasound and listen to a detailed description of the fetus before getting an abortion. The person per-forming the ultrasound must describe the dimen-sions of the fetus, whether arms, legs and internal organs are visible and

whether the physician can detect cardiac activity. He or she must also turn a screen depicting the im-ages toward the woman so she can see them.

This is not unlike what has been going on at Birth Choice here in Raleigh and other like clinics across the country. “RETENTION”

It is every Brother Knights duty to assist with retaining Brother Knights they have introduced to our Council. The retention committee cannot do this alone and needs our help. If you have brought someone

into the Council, please make every effort to ensure that this member stays active. Like with anything else new, members can be a little overwhelmed with all we do. Be a good sponsor, help these new

Brother Knights along on their journey. And most importantly, if you know someone else who has not been around in a while, give them call and invite them back to the Council . Now, more than ever we

need some good men to help us move forward with all the good deeds we do. Become a better Knight of Columbus by helping someone else become a better Knight too!

Brothers All,

We were honored at our last business meeting to have David Jones, our State Deputy, in attendance. He spoke passion-ately about supporting our priests especially in light of the latest allegations made against the Pope and the Irish bishops. During the meeting, the Council voted on and passed the budget resolution to amend the budget to account for the in-crease rent owed to the Columbus Club. We ended the meeting with a couple of decades of the Rosary outside in front of the grotto.

March was a relatively quiet month. We had excellent participation for the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 13th. The weather was glorious and the crowd abundant. We used this year’s parade to distribute over 100 fliers about the Columbus Club facility rentals in addition to the usual tootsie rolls. On March 20th, the state held a 3rd degree in Apex. There were over 70 knights making their 3rd degree, including three knights from our Council.

Our Family of the Month was the family of Tom Monck. Our Knight of the Month was Vincent Sheehan. Tom and Vinnie have been instrumental in the recent success of Wake Services. After many months of hard work, bookings are beginning to rebound and rental income is growing. In order to reduce ex-penses, both Tom and Vinnie have put in countless hours maintaining and cleaning the Council and grounds. They desperate need your help. Please consider volunteering your spare time by joining a grass cutting or cleaning team.

See you at the next meeting!

VIVAT JESUS,

Dave Bayard Grand Knight 2546 919-624-5124 (Home/Cell) [email protected]

Under Good of The Order: Knight of Month: Vincent Sheehan Family of the Month: Tom Monck and family 50/50, Tom Dunham donated winnings to the Seminarian Fund. RBC Fund raising, $495 payments received which represents about half of our commitment, need volunteers for 2 events in June. There is also interest from the Durham Bulls, Mudcats and the Downtown Pavilion. Clothing available with Council Logo, Jacket, Shirts, Hats, see article in newsletter, Contact Joe Ryan. Please pray for those who are sick: Deacon Steve son Mark, Ed Rogosich sister in law, Jeanette, Jim McGowan’s son David, Ken Maldonado’s wife, Bro. Bill Scott, Frank Sileo, Dan Danford’s Mother, Jim Poleto’s Mother, Joe Mark’s Son, Joe Monck, Jerry Santoro. Please pray for those who have died: Rene Tremblay, B.J. Taylor, All of the Unborn. Pray for all our Armed Forces Personnel. Those who have lost their jobs, for our leaders and all of our Priests. For Dea-con Mike Thangwa, ordained on March 30th.

Brother Dan Danford would care to thank the following members for their help at the RBC center. Leaders; Ray Tremblay, Joe Ryan, Ed Rogosich. Helpers; Matt Leonhard, Mark Palko, Bob Kearney, Big Ed Bartoszewski, Frank Kirsch, Chris Augustine, Don Dubois, Dave Bayard & Rich Ferraro. Thanks also to Kristen Tremblay.

So far this season we have earned $1059.97 working 18 events. This may not seem like a lot for our efforts, but you have to start small and work your way up to the big stands and that’s going to take a bigger commitment from all of us. Dan is working so very hard to bring this along, but he cannot do it alone! We need to help! The new season is beginning soon and Dan is well liked at the RBC, which means we can get better stands to work. I encourage all new and existing mem-bers to call Dan and sign up. All the information is posted on our website. http://kofc2546.org/

“10 Facts About WW II You May Or May Not Know”

by Carmine Sacchitello PGK 1. The strength of the German army during WW II was larger than both France and Great Britain combined.

2. The man that was going to rule the world, Adolph Hitler, and his wife of one day, Eva Braun, are buried in East Ger-many under what is now a garbage dump.

3. B-17’s carried four tons of bombs and 1.5 tons of machine gun ammo. The U.S. 8th Air Force shot down 6,098 en-emy fighter planes.

4. The Russian Air Force destroyed 500 German planes by ramming them in mid-air. The Russian Army also some-times cleared mine fields by machine gunning through them. (WOW)

5. During the battle for Normandy, General fritz Bayerlein was told by his superiors that his men cannot retreat a single yard. His reply was, “Don’t worry about my men retreating, they will hold their position because they are all dead.”

6. During the battle of the Hurtgen forest, fought from September to December, 1944, the Germans mined the roads with a “Teller” mine every eight paces for four miles.

7. The two largest battleships ever built were the Japanese's Yamato and Musashi. Both were launched in 1940, (August & November). They each had nine 18 inch guns. The Musachi was sunk in October, 1944 by U.S. carrier planes and the Yamato was sunk in April, 1945 again by U.S. carrier planes. Both ships had total losses of 3,790 Japanese sailors.

8. By the time the U.S. entered WW II in 1941, the war in Europe had been going on for two years, in Africa for four years and for ten years in China.

9. The battle of Kursk fought in July, 1943 between the Germans and the Russians involved 1 million men, 6,000 tanks and 5,000 planes.

10. This month, (may 7th) marks the 65th anniversary of the end of WW II in Europe, (V-E Day). Some say May 8th marks the wars end! The surrender document was signed My 7th, however the Russians complained that the German General who signed for Germany didn’t have a high enough rank. So the next day, (May 8th) a higher ranking Ger-man General signed, thus the Russians consider May 8th as the end of the war.

Thanks to our Council Director Jerry Santoro PGK, another fun Knight of bowling was had by all in attendance this past April 20th at Capital lanes in Raleigh. We had about 12 lanes filled up with about 50 bowlers and the pins didn’t stand a chance. We also would like to thank Capital Lanes for the use of the facility at no charge I might add.

These are the type of family activities that the Knights are famous for and it would be even more wonderful if we could get more of you to join in. Remember, you’ll never strike out when it comes to the Knights!

about some members who have already stated they will take a position, but we still need to fill some vacancies. If you feel you can or want to help in any of our program areas, or feel you want to consider running for office, now is the time to step up to the plate.....your Council needs you. Elections will be held at our June meeting and I encourage all mem-bers, especially our newest members to attend, get involved and vote for next years officers.

Council 2546 is having it's annual Wake County Special Olympics Golf Tournament......renamed last year The Billy Scott Memorial Tournament. For those that do not know, Bill Scott Sr. "Mr. Tootsie" is the member that started our OPLAMB program. Billy, his son, was the inspiration behind Bill's commitment to OPLAMB. I would like all the local councils to put at least 1 team in this years tournament. Please let me know your coun-cil's plans. Details of the tournament are below. If you do not play golf, there are other ways to help. I would like each council to sponsor a hole or put a team in the tournament. For Our Health 2 By Jim Humphrys PGK, Lecture During the April business meeting, the health topic I chose to talk about was pH Balance in our bodies. It has been popularized in such a manner that it oversimplifies the complex and elaborate processes used by the body to maintain a proper pH level in the blood. The term pH means “potential of hydrogen”. pH is measuring: acidity and alkalinity. pH numbers range from 1 to 14 with neutral being 7.0 and 1 being very acidic. Acidity is the concentration of the hydrogen ion. Alkalinity is the con-centration of the hydroxyl ion or OH’s. So the difference is oxygen. Our bodies attempt to maintain a pH of about 7.4 in critical body fluids, and as such it must be mildly alkaline. If it is not mildly alkaline, it cannot use oxygen efficiently and if it is unable to use the oxygen effectively, it produces free oxygen radicals, and many of you have heard of how free oxygen radicals cause damage to cell membranes. To better understand how oxygen and alkalinity play an important part read the following: The alkaline side of the pH scale is called aerobic metabolism, where oxygen burns glucose to create energy. Oxygen burns one sugar molecule via the kreb cycle to produce 36 energy molecules called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). O2 + 1glc -> 36 ATP [Remember 36 energy molecules] This process is called oxidative respiration. It is important to remember that oxygen does not make the environment alka-line; oxygen is the currency, the substance that is used in an alkaline environment to keep you alive. Now on the other side of things: On the other side of pH [Acidic] On the other side of the pH scale is the anaerobic metabolism (without oxygen). Here, glu-cose is only able to produce 2 ATP molecules. CO2 -> 2 ATP [Notice only 2, where with oxygen (alkaline) 36] This reaction uses a kind of fall-back fail system called fermentation. This process is not very efficient because the cells want 36 ATP molecules and are getting only 2, so the cell has to use more fuel to make more ATP. If it was able to make the same amount of energy, it would need a minimum of 18 times more sugar. An increase craving of sugar is due to high acidity of bodily fluids, if you were more alkaline you would not have that need for sugar. As a matter of fact, this system doesn’t work efficiently because lack of oxygen brings decay and death while oxygen brings life. So how else does this relate to our health; Cancer cells are an anaerobe, Cancer is an anaerobe, in fact, Dr Worburg (1934) demonstrated that if you put cancer cells in an alkaline solution they die within a short period of time because alkaline solutions contain oxygen and oxygen is toxic to cancer cells. An other problem with our bodies being acidic is that the body is constantly drawing on buffers such as; Intracellular fluids found inside of the cell contain buff-ers called hemoglobin (which can handle approximately 20% of the cellular buffering needs), calcium(Ca), magnesium (Mg), potas-sium (K), sodium (Na), chloride (Cl) and phosphate (PO4). These are the buffers that the body uses primarily to maintain alkalinity. We have all heard of these minerals (Ca, Mg, K, Na & Cl), but the important thing to remember is that the body does not just pro-duce these molecules; you must first bring them into the body. What I have done to help alkalize my body; I quit drinking sodas, ate more raw foods, took supplements and alkalized my water, and since doing so have lost about 35 lbs. Over this last year. Also had to add another hole in my belt to keep my pants up! Check out the Wolfe clinic, that is where I found most of my alkalinity information used in this article. http://www.thewolfeclinic.com/ and read the whole story of Alkalinity 101.
