MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR (2013-14)

JEREMY HURST

Dear fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors and Family of Rotary,

Michelle and I wish you, your families and loved ones, all the very best for a healthy, happy and prosperous 2014.

Fittingly, January is Awareness Month and as we start the second half of our Rotary year what better time for us to be aware of and reflect on the successes and challenges of the past six months and decide how we’re going to move forward over the next six with our family, professional, and, of course, Rotary lives. Awareness can come on a lot of levels, but often it starts with being

truthful with ourselves. In doing so, we can ask ourselves questions like:

Have I been the Rotarian I could and should have been during the first six months of this Rotary year?

What can I do to make my club more effective and a better experience for all its members including myself?

Is my club truly aware of, and meeting, the most pressing needs of our communities?

Am I a fully “Engaged” Rotarian?

The great news is that having visited 65 of our 83 Rotary Clubs, I can truly state that District 7020 has some of the most vibrant and effective Rotary Clubs with passionate, dedicated Rotarians, in the Rotary World, delivering tremendous service to our communities;and I personally would like to thank each and every one of you for the commitment and dedication you have shown in living our motto of “Service Above Self” throughout District 7020 over the past six months. This is something we can rightly be proud of and I have no doubt that generally we are a highly “Engaged District.”

So as we enter 2014, we need to ensure we build on this. Now is the time to work even harder to complete the tasks we set ourselves from the beginning of our New Rotary Year, last July; and in particular, over the next three months, let’s recommit to support our Presidents in achieving the goals they have set for our clubs and make sure we enjoy ourselves in the process!

Perhaps the most important level of awareness we can have at this point, therefore, is that each of us can make a real difference if we re-engage ourselves in Rotary during 2014.

So let’s rise to this challenge, and enjoy the rest of this Rotary year as we continued to “Engage Rotary - Change Lives.”

Yours in Rotary Service,

Jeremy Hurst, Governor 2013/14District 7020 -Rotary International

THE ROTARY FLOAT IN THE NEW YEAR’S PARADE

Pasadena, California

Above, the Rose Parade Rotary float for 2014.

Why do we enter a float in the Rose Parade?

Paul Harris said, "In the promotion of Rotary, it is important to reach large numbers and you cannot reach them privately."

When Rotary International's directors approved the first entry in the parade over 34 years ago, they saw in it an unrivaled opportunity to bring Rotary's name into public view. They reasoned that an eye-catching float would capture the interest of network commentatorsand remind the world, of Rotary's good works. And so it has!

Does Rotary International pay for the float?

Rotarians, Clubs and Districts in the United States and Canada donate all of the money to pay for the float.

District Governor Jeremy Hurst Visit to

MY BROTHER’S WORKSHOP – St. Thomas, Virgin Islands

1When District Governor Jeremy Hurst visited the Rotary Clubs on St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands the week of October 10, he had the opportunity to tour four of the projects that Clubs on St. Thomas support. Although he was impressed with all that he saw, there was one in particular that WOWed him. In it, he saw something that he felt could be a model for other communities and their Rotary Clubs. He specifically asked that the information concerning this project be sent to him and given to Kitty Bucsko to share in the District Newsletter.

BACKGROUND OF PROJECT

In 2010, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands had the highest per-capita murder rate in the US. The individuals committing the murders were generally male between the ages of 16-24 years of age who

were unemployed.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

My Brother’s Workshop is an organization that was created to target that demographic and provides an alternative.

It is a non-profit Virgin Islands charitable corporation. It has been organized to provide hope, faith and purpose to at-risk and high-risk young people in the US Virgin Islands by offering mentoring, counselling, paid job training, education and job placement. These efforts are being made in association with other local and national groups functioning with purposes consistent with those listed below. The program was started and is led by Scott Bradley, along with the Dutch Reformed Church of St. Thomas.

The program focuses on youth, both boys and girls, ages 16-24 who have dropped out of school, are marginally literate, and who live in poverty or who are homeless. Many of these youths have been involved in gang or gang-related activities or/and have a juvenile criminal record.

The objectives of the program include:

Mentoring the youth while they are in the program through positive reinforcement, moral values, respect and trust from the trainers, staff, volunteers and board of directors.

Mental health counselling through human service’s existing programs and volunteer counsellors who can focus on identifying specific issues such as anger management, domestic violence, and substance abuse.

Paid job training through specific industries that are proven economical outlets in the US Virgin Islands, such as Construction and small trade skills (like woodworking, plumbing, masonry, and carpentry), Hospitality and Tourism (including service, cooking, baking, housekeeping, maintenance, salon services, and retail).

Education through GED tutoring, re-acclimation the youth back into traditional high school programs and consideration of non-traditional schooling such as a charter program that can be hosted on the MBW property and can be funded through educational grants and private funding.

Job-placement opportunities for the individuals as they graduate the program and have been deemed transformed emotionally, socially and skilfully along with job-placement assistance such as resume building, interview training and communication skills.

The Program is HUGELY successful. Over 185 young people have been through the program, and there is an extensive waiting list.

THE ROTARY CONNECTION

Clearly the mission and purpose of My Brother’s Workshop personifies Rotary’s Ideal of Service Above Self, and teaches the life skills that will lead to the behaviours we value in our 4-Way Test.

The Rotary Club of St. Thomas has been providing financial support to purchase the equipment and tools used to teach the participants, as well as employing them to construct the new Guard House the club donated to its adopted school, Charlotte Amalie High last year.

According to an article appearing in the online news The St. Thomas Source” on February 6, 2012:

Rotary Sunrise is responsible for creating the territory’s first Rotary Community Corp.

Members and graduates of My Brother’s Workshop are being encouraged and trained in the finer points of community service, and will eventually be able to teach their friends to do the same.

Rotary Community Corps (RCC) is defined as a team of non-Rotarian men and women who are committed to their community’s long-term development and self-sufficiency. Rotarian Shaun Pennington who submitted the proposal said they would work with the members of My Brother’s Workshop, provide them with additional professional and life-skill development opportunities, and help them develop over time into community leadership roles.

“Individuals and organizations within the community with resources, expertise and formal authority will be engaged to offer MBW associates work opportunities, training and guidance to meet vocational and entrepreneurial goals,” the proposal said.

Pennington said that government agencies such as the Departments of Labor, Human Services and Police have already been engaged. A variety of community members ranging from attorneys to activists were also ready to help out.

The final step of the plan is involving My Brother’s Workshop members and graduates of the program in conflict resolution training and other development workshops that could lead to them becoming peer counsellors. Three of My Brother’s Workshop’s current members have already taken and passed a test to mentor peers, according to Bradley.”

“Through this program, the Rotarians will help groom our guys, teach them how to be community leaders and mentor them,” Bradley said. “This is empowering us to do more with the boys and helping us get more funding and equipment for what we do. What we’re really adding is another avenue for the boys to have an impact on their community.”

Through My Brother’s Workshop, Bradley instils the importance of community service, and involves the young men in his program in regular activities, such as fixing up playgrounds, repairing community buildings and helping families.

“From that foundation, the next step for the boys is to be more organized about giving back to the community,” Bradley said, “and that is what the RCC will do. They are learning how to be Rotarians

who can be leaders in the community.”

The original timeline for getting the first RCC going and ready to meet Rotary International’s guidelines was two years, but Pennington said that could well be revised to a year or less, based on the amount of enthusiasm, encouragement and commitmentreceived from the community .

“It is a self-sustaining program,” Pennington told members and graduates of My Brother’s Workshop. “When people begin to come together, we’re going to try to give you whatever support you need to be self-supporting and to go out in your own communities and help.”

“I think there is enough of a structure within Rotary and My Brother’s Workshop, and some of the other community agencies to all get involved in this major effort,” she said. “It is an exciting prospect to take what you’ve learned and give back to your friends and others in the community.”

CLUB OF THE MONTH UPDATE

The COTM Committee wishes you all a very Happy New Year!

Over the three and a half years of this district programme, some changes have been, and all have been in an effort to make the programme as fair, interesting, and motivational as possible. These changes have included streamlining the points system, reviewing and updating the cut-off limits for small and large clubs, and so on.

One criteria which has remained unchanged is that clubs can be awarded the winning certificate and lapel pins only once during each Rotary year.

Some of our clubs have enquired why we have established this system, and the answer lies in the original goals of the programme.

Page 15: HAPPY NEW YEAR! - Microsoftclubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000050041/en-us/files... · 2014-08-31 · Rotary International Float in the Rose Parade – New Year’s Day, 2014 7

January 2014 15

Club of the Month was established with two outcomes in mind:

The first - to give all Rotarians an opportunity to witness what other clubs were doing and to glean ideas for use in their own clubs

The second - to provide a sense of achievement and pride for clubs who made the effort to take part and perhaps even win.

It is not intended as a competition, but rather a motivational tool, and an opportunity for as many clubs as possible to be recognized. We should mention, however, that if a club is successful in gaining the greatest number of points, but has already been a winner, they are still awarded the maximum 100 points. This point award provides an opportunity to gain a high cumulative score so these winners are rewarded – certainly not penalized.

The programme has proven to be popular with many clubs and it has certainly provided many innovative ideas, many of which have been exported to other clubs, and in some cases have been adopted by clubs in other districts. In this regard, we believe the COTM program has been a success story for Rotary.

The COTM committee is open to suggestions for improvement! Next year we are considering expanding the divisions to include Small, Medium and Large categories to ensure all clubs enjoy as level a playing field as possible.

We hope the programme continues to enjoy this level of success and even more participation, and we take this opportunity to thank the 41 clubs which have submitted since July this year.

Page 16: HAPPY NEW YEAR! - Microsoftclubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000050041/en-us/files... · 2014-08-31 · Rotary International Float in the Rose Parade – New Year’s Day, 2014 7

January 2014 16

ROTARY CLUB OF ST. MAARTEN MID-ISLE…submitted by PAG Louis Wever

On top of the list of Thank yous are Kishor and Dr. Nash. I can’t think of a nicer venue for such an occasion. Thank you Kishor and Monisha.

Dr. Nash, you displayed a talent (as a hobby) that even professionals would envy. The food was awesome!

The success of the evening was based on team work - from those who prepared the food, the organizing committee under the chairmanship of Thomas, and not to forget the Rotarians of Rotary Mid-Isle who made sure all tickets were (effortlessly) sold out.

Those who served the tables were highly experienced. The tents, tables, chairs, cutlery, glasses etc. from Mr Florijn were all in place. The Flamenco Dancer and Mr. Cole’s Band were perfect for this event.

We cannot leave out our Rotarians’ spouses, Denise and Gayle, who helped tremendously with the setting up and decorations.

But looking around at every table that evening, I can be 100 per cent sure that every single person in attendance had a fantastic time. The Thank you list goes on and on. There is so much more to say about this event, but to sum it all up

WELL DONE ROTARY MID-ISLE!

This fundraiser featured an exciting line up of fine artists including Naomi Taylor, Anastacia Charlow, Shacara Newton, Josh Lynes and others..... backed by Mr. Fred Ferguson himself..... and the Vice Versa Band!

The proceeds from this fundraiser event go toward our club's community service projects and youth programs with The Bahamas National Trust and the Seahorse Institute, in supporting their ongoing efforts of providing developmental and educational programs for young children in various areas.

Maria Buncamper-Molanus, President of the Rotary Club of St. Maarten inducted both Caputoand Motwani at the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of St. Maarten on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the Divi Little Bay Beach Resort.

ROTARY CLUB OF ST. MARTIN SUNRISE…submitted by Angela Gordon

The Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise held a successful Rotary Family breakfast on Saturday December 14, 2013 at Air Lekkerbek.

Rotary International has designated December as Family of Rotary Month. The idea is to have family members and friends understand the role of Rotarians and enlighten them on the many projects that are, and continue to be, executed in the community.

This month also allows Rotary Sunrise the opportunity to celebrate the wonder of our own family of Rotaract, Interact, youth exchange, ambassadorial scholar, GSE team members, and our Rotary friends from around the world.

The family breakfast saw about 82 family and friends in attendance. They include the President of Parliament Hon. Drs. Gracita Arrindell , Minister of VROMI, the Hon. Maurice Lake, Rotarians from all four clubs, (Rotary Sunrise, Mid-isle, SMN Nord, and St. Maarten) Rotaractors and our newly formed Sundial Interactors. Everyone came together with family and friends to enjoy a family breakfast filled with togetherness and Fellowship.

As we approach Christmas and the New Year, we are conscious of the focus of family; therefore, December is certainly a time to reflect on family values and how Rotary shapes those values. In Rotary, we see our life’s utmost priorities as family, work, and then Rotary, but preferably we should not segregate Rotary from our family life.

Rotary Sunrise would like to thank all families and friends who shared our breakfast on Saturday December 14, 2013.

ROTARY CLUB OF ST. THOMASHOSTS HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING

…submitted by Carol Bareuther

Holiday Gift-Giving for Boys & Girls Club

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Christmas came early to the Boys & Girls Club at Oswald Harris Court, St. Thomas. Santa, aka Rotarian Paul Davis, delivered gifts to 46 grade- and high-school students during a holiday party on Tuesday afternoon. The presents were donated by members of the Rotary Club of St. Thomas as well as the public who donated gifts in drop-off sites at the Bluebeard's Castle Hotel and the Guardian Insurance office located at Tutu Park Mall. This holiday celebration has become an annual tradition for both the Rotarians and Boys & Girls Club students.

“This gift-giving is in recognition of all the Boys & Girls Club do for the kids in the community,” says Sue Boland, club past president who heads up the gift collection, delivery and presentation.

At left De’Naisia Huggins accepts a gift from Santa.

This year, Santa’s sack of goodies was extra bountiful. Sandy Castorena, the Rotary Club of St. Thomas’ fundraising chair was so inspired by her donation of two bicycles at last year’s event that she passed along that good feeling to close friends, Chris and Mary Carr, of Seabrook, Texas.

The Texas couple responded in kind this year with a monetary donation sufficient to purchase eighteen bicycles. What’s more, the Carrs’ daughter and son-in-law, Cassy and Bradley Danek, just happened to be honeymooning on St. Thomas and were able to attend the bicycle presentation. Each student was also given a bicycle helmet.

“The students have been working hard all year in their school work and in other areas,” explains Jackie Brown, director of the St. Thomas Boys & Girls Club. “This is a nice reward for them.”

The Rotary Club of St. Thomas members, including Santa, will deliver toys to the Nana Baby Children’s Home before Christmas.

To get things going, Rotarians, and Police Officers were entertained with to two musical renditions by the excited children. Following this, the children were seated and served a hot lunch by the attending adults.

After the meal, it was time for gift giving. This was the highlight of the day as the children were extremely eager to see what gifts they would receive.

Each child was presented with various gift items from their wish lists, collected from them at a pizza social/fellowship visit last month

These ‘special’ students had huge grins when presented with their specially wrapped packages. Upon opening each gift, it was obvious that each child at the School was all set for a Happy Holiday.

Maria Buncamper-Molanus, President of the Rotary Club St. Maarten, commented, “Our young Interact Leaders did an exemplary job during their Rotary Club visits. I look forward to their continuing contributions as Interactors and future Rotarians for many years to come.”

President Rholdyn Lake and Secretary Marian Felix of St. Maarten Academy, Jo-Anne Galva and Janna Philip of Milton Peters College and Secretary Breanna Barrie and Sergeant at Arms Dipti Budhrani all commented on the various activities of their respective clubs to help the community.

All the leaders talked about the effort to help the victims of the recent Cole Bay fire, and the food and clothing drives held at each of their schools. “St. Maarten Academy Interact Club drive was so successful that collection boxes had to be emptied at the end of each school day to make room for future donations,” according to Academy Interact President Rholdyn Lake.

The Club representatives used the opportunity to provide an overview of the activities planned for the balance of the Interact year. These projects include, for the MPC and Academy, breakfast programs in their respective schools.

St. Maarten Academy started their Chess Project which includes classes and games with the possibility of expanding beyond the school grounds and hosting interscholastic Chess games.

President Jo-Anne Galva of MPC Interact Club spoke of the flea market and a car wash among other activities to raise funds for their community service activities.

The Learning Unlimited Interact Club was the first of the clubs to provide relief to the Cole Bay fire victims through the Red Cross and is currently preparing its community service plans.

The three Interact Clubs that are sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Maarten operate independently, guided by Rotary and faculty advisers.

An initial evaluation of the workshop by President Maria Buncamper, Past President Pierre DeCelles, Past President Robert Judd, and Dr. Soc revealed that more time could have been spent on Interact Members interacting with each other in an effort to become better acquainted with each other and increase participation in activities.

Dr. Soc, who served as the Moderator for the December 7th event jumped in and said, “After the event was over, I had the opportunity to speak to many of the participants and I asked them what we could have done differently to make the day better. Overwhelmingly, the response was ‘we wished the day was longer and that we had more time together; when can we do this again?’ ”
