    Parents, Students, and Staff,

Here at CTMS, were looking for ward to turning the page on 2012 and ushering in 2013 and the new semester that it brings alongwith it! Weve managed to avoid the snow and other hassles of winter so far and we can do nothing but ask Santa to bring us afew more months of peaceful weather so that we can focus on that which we do best: learning! The winter months are always anexciting time for everyone at CTMS, with the athletics program in full swing, extra-curricular activities perking along, and classesdeep into their subject matter, theres no other word to desc ribe our student and staff: BUSY! These last few months have been

an exciting time at CTMS and the next couple of months are sure to rival those that have already flown by. Wed like to take thspace to give you an update on what weve been up to over the last few months!

The CTMS basketball players have been busy on the court, racking p victories for our school. We couldnt be more proud of our

players and the dedication they show not only to the sport but to their academics as well. These students are asked to spendpractically all of their free time in practice, improving on their individual skills and more importantly, what it means to be part of ateam and using their skills to work together. In addition to so many hours spent practicing an equal amount of time is spent onschool work to ensure their academics remain first place as well! This week before Christmas break will give the student body achance to see our players in action CTMS hosts an afternoon game against Shepherdstown!

In November we were able to host a very special event. Crystal Muia, one of our excellent 7 th -grade Science teachers, workedhard to bring David and Peggy Beamer (parents of 9/11 flight 93 victim Todd Beamer) along with Chief W2 officer Kenneth Snyderto CTMS for a very special presentation on the events of September 11 th and heroism. All students and staff were able toparticipate in this event that not only served as a moving reminder of the tragic events that day and the courage exhibited bythose brave individuals, but as a fundraiser as well. While memorials to the fallen exist at the site of the World Trade Center inNYC and the Pentagon in Virginia, no memorial has been erected in Springfield PA to commemorate those lost on United AirlinesFlight 93. The Beamer family is working to correct this injustice. Tee shirts were made available to the student boy and staff commemorating the events of that day. In a campaign titled 93 for .93 Cents, these shirts are sold for .93 cents, with all proceedings to benefit an on-site memorial to remember those lost on that day. All students were given an opportunity to sign abanner that will be displayed alongside this memorial. Schools from the other 49 states currently have banners on display. WestVirginia was the only state absent from the collection. CTMS is very proud to fill that void and represent our great state. It was adeeply moving presentation and with such a high level of interest present in our community, we sold out of tee shirts. The Journaland our local NBC25 affiliate station covered this event. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Beamers and the Officer Snyder, for making this special day possible.

Christmas break is upon us and were all looking forward to this time off to spend with our friends and family. After break, its

back to the grind as we wrap up the second marking period and roll into ta very busy second semester. We continue to be proudof the students at CTMS and are looking forward to the second half of the year and finishing the second half of this year as strongwe began it! We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing everyone back in 2013!!

Im looking forward to hosting an active and inspiring SGA at CTMS! Plans includevarious school improvement projects, charitable initiatives, and of course, sponsorship of the8 thGrade Farewell Dance at the end of the year! Along with these activities, students involvedin the SGA will gain a deeper understanding of our countrys government, our p oliticalparties, and the roles and responsibilities of those who hold elected office. 6th Grade: We have been studying pronouns and working onparagraph writing. After Thanksgiving, we will be beginning the novel,

Hatchet, continuing with a study of verbs, working on writinginformational text each student needs to bring in a recipe if theyhave not done so yet. We will also be sending Christmas Cards to

Project Patriot- for wounded soldiers. If anyone has extra cards theywould like to donate, it would be appreciated.

8th Grade: Students are working on a variety of novels through bothLiterature Circles and independent study. The Argumentative papers

on the school calendar will be completed in early December andstudents will begin their research on their selected topics for theresearch project. We will be focusing on editing skills and grammar inour daily activities. As with the 6th graders students need to submit

recipes for informational writing and we will also be working withsending Christmas Cards through Project Patriot. The novella for

December will be A Christmas Carol.

Students have just wrapped up their Citizenship to Action TechStep project. Students presented awide range of topics that they felt would improve our community and nation. Before we leave

for break, students will be taking on a new role as student-teachers. Each group or individual willbe teaching a lesson on how to analyze primary source documents (newspapers, maps,

charts). When we return from break, we will begin our West Virginia history unit. Yeah! It's

I hope all of my students and their families have a restful and

relaxing break. It is hard to believe the year is almost half over.

    Algebra I:

Our mid-term exam will be given on Friday, January 4 andMonday, January 7. A study guide will be sent home for

students to complete over the break. I dont ask for hours of study per day, but 5 to 10 minutes each day will go a long waytowards a less stressful exam. We will review the study guideon Wednesday and Thursday when we return from the break.

Students should have their study guides filled out at that time.Waiting until then to study is not a good strategy. The exam

    will cover chapters 1 5.

    8th Grade Math:

We will continue working with ratios, unit rates, proportion andsolving real world problems. This is an exciting part of 8th

grade math, as it has many real world applications. One thingwe have been studying is how to find the best deal when

comparing two packages of something. Take your child groceryshopping and let them help you!

After the break, we will complete a project on designing a playspace. This will be an opportunity for students to show what

they have learned outside of a pencil and paper test.

What a great learning experience for all students participating in Math Stats.Students learned to blog, gather data, create charts, and wrote a report. The

students did a great job! All classes are working on percentages and how theyrelate to the real-world. With the support of Mr. Parker's classes, who helpedto create sale ads, we calculated the increases and decreases in percentages. Iam looking forward to 2013 when we will begin working on Algebra conceptsand Geometry concepts.
