THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out “Repent!” before He calls His new followers. “Come after me,” Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our disciple-ship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today’s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for com-pletely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the Gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins and believe in the good news of salvation. Mary Stuart Wall passed unexpectedly December 28, 2017 at home in Half Moon Bay, CA after spending her morning laughing with her two daughters, Brigid and Nicole, at the age of 63. She was born to her beloved, late parents, Paul and Doro-thy (Cusick) Stuart and raised in Randolph, MA along with her three brothers: Paul, Thomas, and Robert. Growing up, Mary volunteered at the rectory of St. Bernadette Church and as a candy striper at Carney Hospital, played a number of sports, and worked at the lunch counter at the BPM. She graduated from Randolph High School (class of '72), re-ceived her BS from Northeastern University and went on to earn her MBA from Western New England University. Her love of learning, faith, and community continued throughout her life. Mary started her career working as a grant administrator with the Department of Justice in Washington, DC and with the US Army as a resource manager at Fort Devens Intelli-gence School. She found her professional niche in the aer-ospace defense industry as a contracts and pricing manag-er. She worked on the Stealth Bomber project during her tenure at Northrup Grumman and went on to work at Boe-ing until a year ago when she retired. She was never afraid to speak up and get things done the right way. Mary Stuart married Tom Wall and they began to build their lives together. Opportunities arose and they relocated to California and started a family. Brigid arrived first and Ni-cole joined about 5 years later. Friends and family were so important. Their life in San Clemente was full of beach bon-fires, pool parties, and softball. Their summers were filled with trips back home to Cape Cod and visits with cousins from all sides of the family tree. An avid baker, Mary was master of the Whoopie Pie Cake which was the favorite of all. It was clear that Mary's daughters meant the world to her and the amount of love she surrounded them with was always evident. More opportunities, meant another move, this time to Half Moon Bay and Mary found her stride as a mother as the girls grew. Her home was always filled with visiting family, neighbors, laughter and noise. She man-aged their softball teams, went on class field trips, and re-minded them to make good choices on their way out the door. Faith guided Mary every day. She spent countless hours at Our Lady of the Pillar working with the confirmation stu-dents and the confirmation program. Since retiring, she attended daily mass, and embraced her faith and the Cath-olic community. Her spirit lives on in her daughters, her brothers, numerous nieces and nephews, great nephews, cousins, God children and lifelong friends. A rosary and celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on her birthday, January 27, at Our Lady of the Pillar, Half Moon Bay, CA. Family and friends are invited to attend.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
