This weekend we as a Church support the national collection for the Black and Indian Missions. Because of the generosity of the people of this parish, and parishes around the United States, diocesan communities can build the Church and preach the Gospel of Jesus among the African American, Native American, and Alaska Native people of God. Our support helps people from the inner cities of the rural South and from the deserts of the Southwest to Alaska’s cold wilderness. The need for evangeliza-tion programs is so important to our Church in this changing world and our generosity enables the Black and Indian Mission Office to support parish life and catechists; em-powering evangelizers; and encouraging vocations. Let us be generous once again!

Create in me a clean heart.

Sim-plemente debemos estar dispuestos a hacerlo.

As we enter the season of Lent we hear about the temptations of Jesus. Today we come face to face with his humanity and with ours as well. He was tempted just as we are tempted. It is important to understand that temptations come in many different forms, and that things that appear good may in fact keep us from doing the will of God. For many of us, obedience to God seems difficult, if not almost impossible. There are so many things and people that tempt us away from doing what we know to be true and right. So, staying strong in the face of temptation is a real chal-lenge. However, the Holy Spirit guides our hearts and consciences, and we are given the grace necessary to learn God’s way and to obey God through our daily actions and attitudes. We must simply be willing to do so. Today we continue to pray for our catechumens and especially for our Elect who have entered their final period of preparation before they are initiated into the faith through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Their presence in our midst reminds us that during Lent repent-ance and baptism take center stage once again in the life of the Church. This beautiful season disposes both the Elect and the catechumens of the universal Church and the faithful of the Church to embrace and celebrate the paschal mystery —dying and rising with Christ. The Elect are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the Rite of Election, the Scrutinies, and a deep spiritual reflection. The catechumens by an invitation to deepen their rela-tionship with Jesus. The faithful are called to listen more intently to the word of God, to devote ourselves to prayers, and to prepare ourselves through a spirit of repentance to renew our baptismal promises. Next Sunday as we celebrate the Rite of Anointing of our Elect and catechumens let us remember that we too continuously need God’s help and strength to live the faith. May you have a blessed and fruitful Lenten season,

Stewardship of Prayer . We fulfill our obligation to unite with one another in prayer. Prayers are powerful and important for those in our parish community who are ill or need our support. In an effort to ensure our prayer request list is up to date, at the end of each month we will remove anyone from the list for whom we do not have a current request. Thank you for your cooperation and your prayers for our parishioners in need.

Generations of Catholics have used their Lenten sacrifice to alle-viate hun-

ger caused by poverty and to improve the lives of individuals and families in developing countries as well as in their own com-munities. How we all come together as communities of faith to help those in need are stories worth telling. This year, as in pre-vious years, we have the opportunity to share the love and mer-cy of God with others during the season of Lent. We unite with more than 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States in a life-changing Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s rice bowl in the back of the church. Please don’t forget, that during the 40 days of Lent, we are called to reflect on the challenge of global hunger and how it

affects our human family; and remember that your Lenten sacrifices can change lives.
