Catch a train from Kings HeathHow would you like to catch a train from Kings Heath in to the city centre? Right now your best bet is to hop over the fence behind Homebase and lasso a passing freight train.

So why not try it? Basically, because it’s a daft idea. Especially when there might be better way.

There used to be a station at Kings Heath exactly on that spot, but it was closed in 1941 due to the Second World War would you believe it. ‘Progress’ since then has turned the Alcester Road into a car park twice a day with limited public transport alternatives.

Aside from the impossibility of boarding a train that doesn’t stop at a non-existent platform, those freight trains head for a too-busy New Street on a very round-about route. This is actually more of a problem than building a station, which would be relatively cheap. To solve it what’s needed is a little short-cut of track called a ‘chord’, so trains could turn north, dropping you and I off at Moor Street station. The journey would take just 7 minutes. Simple.

Page 13: MKH Apr 2012

13

So don’t some engineers need to sit down with some planners and simply draw it all out? Of course, but they did all that so long ago they probably used actual pencils. Everyone who cares – politicians, Network Rail, Centro – know exactly where this chord has to go, as well as how much it would cost and how long it would take to build.

And when might this glorious vision of the future arrive? Somewhat predictably, it’s been delayed. Funding for the railways is divided into five-year blocks; the next one will be 2014-2019. Centro are apparently eager to get the line built and start making money, but Network Rail, responsible for any building, aren’t so keen. In fact, it’s looking likely that the project will get pushed back to the 2019-2024 period.

Joe Peacock, a campaigner at Birmingham Friends of the Earth, is no stranger to these problems. “This is an issue we’ve already run at least three major campaigns on and gained huge support for, so the building of the chords really should be underway now. When politicians, businesses, residents groups and environmental campaigners are all behind a scheme, we fail to see why it should be so hard to get it funded.”

The only way to get the building started is to keep the pressure up on everyone involved. If a candidate for May elections knocks on your door, why not raise the issue with them then? And there’s

a facebook campaign to keep updated on what’s happening in the meantime.

So, while lassoing speeding trains is definitely a daft idea, it’s only just slightly less crazy than the way decisions are made about the railways.

Sarehole Mill taking a step back in timeSarehole Mill is set to turn the clock back to its heyday when it was an operational mill, with the help of funding from Birmingham City Council.

Thanks to the princely sum of £300,000 the plans are in place to de-silt the mill-pond enabling the mill-wheel to become fully functional again and grind locally sourced wheat. Some of the flour will be sold within the mill shop, some will be baked into bread on the premises and there are also plans to supply local artisan bakers.

This famous Tolkien icon is a well-loved local attraction and a central focal point

of the annual Tolkien festival. And with this being the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit part of the funding has gone towards exciting development of the Tolkien exhibition within the museum. The granary building is now home to a number of new displays detailing local Tolkien connections.

Phase one of this ambitious project is already underway with repairs having been made to the sluice gates. This meant that

Page 21: MKH Apr 2012

21Please mention My Kings Heath when responding to adverts

earlier in the year the millpond had to be drained, revealing just how much silt there is to remove – up to a meter in some places. The pond will be refilled again this month and work will then begin in earnest in November in order to have as little impact as possible on local wildlife.

In November the pond will be drained again and de-silting will take place together with the removal of much of the reeds. Mill machinery will be repaired and there will be repairs made to the roof. Finally a bake-house will be established to enable on-site baking.

Over the winter a team of volunteers will be recruited and trained at Charlcote Mill by a professional miller. Up to fifteen

volunteer millers are needed to keep up a continuity of milling so if you would like to get involved then you can!

The aim is to begin milling during the summer next year, 2013.

Sarehole Mill Curator Irene De Boo commented: We wanted to bring Sarehole Mill back to life and that is now going to happen thanks to the generous funding from Birmingham City Council. It is vitally important for us to preserve this valuable part of our heritage.”

Historic Outer Circle Bus TourThe number 11 bus is close to many of our hearts in Kings Heath and on xx April you will have the chance to see the whole route on a special three-hour tour riding on a vintage 1950s double-decker bus.

The tour ran last year for the first time on 11.11.11 and looks set to becoming a regular attraction with plans to run it again in September this year.

Starting at Sarehole Mill the bus will set off in an anti-clockwise direction through Acocks Green and Erdington with a break at the Tesco supermarket in Witton for a cuppa. Then on through Handsworth, Harborne, Selly Oak and of course Kings Heath before descending back into the valley of the River Cole.

The tour will highlight many of the notable places and events on the outer reaches of the Second City and on their doorstep, folk from Kings Heath will be able to find out what Vicarage Road was originally called, what was destroyed in riots in 1971 and what calamity befell the area just seven years ago.

The first bus set off to circumnavigate the Second City 86 years ago on 7th April 1926. Birmingham had become

Page 23: MKH Apr 2012

23

the workshop of the world and as more people came to work in the city the need to expand into the surrounding countryside for housing grew. Trams, trains and buses were well established to take workers to and from the city centre, but as factories were established on what were then “Greenfield” sites on the outskirts of the city, people needed to get from one suburb to another.

In 1923 two “inter suburb” routes had already been established between Erdington and Acocks Green, the number 10, and between Bearwood and Kings Heath, the original number 11. The decision was made to join up these two routes and establish what was to become the longest urban bus route in Europe – The Outer Circle.

The new number 11 Outer Circle route ran largely through countryside linking the villages surrounding the city, such as Yardley, Selly Oak, Handsworth and Kings Heath. The original buses, fitted with open staircases and solid tyres were

not popular with the passengers, but the idea of the route was and almost anyone who has lived, worked or gone to school in Birmingham in the last 86 years will probably have memories of the Outer Circle.

To find out more more about the planned Historic Outer Circle Bus Tours you can visit www.outercirclebus.com or send a text message or leave a voicemail message on 07405 849192.

Easter fun at macThere are some fantastic events coming up at mac birmingham this Easter to keep everybody entertained.

Kicking things off are Kid Carpet and the Noisy Animals who will be performing a new rock and roll musical for children on Mon 2 Apr. With an animal band featuring a gorilla, a bear, a hedgehog and a badger, it’s an adventurous tale recommended for ages 3-8, but adults will love it just as much.

Aoife Mannix will be helping children overcome their fear of fiends, spiders, aliens and dragons through the power of spoken word, music and digital game playing with her show Misunderstood Monsters on Wed 4 Apr, and there’s a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to the world of music and dance with Fleur Darkin’s Innocence between Mon 9 – Wed 11 Apr. It’s one

of two shows being performed at mac birmingham that week based around William Blake’s boyhood visions, and while the other (Experience) is geared more towards adult audiences, this imaginative show is suitable for ages 0-5.

If your children want to get creative, there’s also a great selection of hands-on sessions ranging from making hats and bonnets to exploring the world around them (Nature Explorers), as well as workshops the whole family can enjoy.

Dads Lane Allotments awarded £10,000 fundingDads Lane Allotments have received £10,000 from Big Lottery Fund for a composting toilet and pavilion.

After almost 90 years, Dads Lane Allotments is to have toilet facilities, and a pavilion for plot holders to use as a meeting place, where they can swap seeds and recipes over a cuppa. Work will commence in mid April and the official opening will be at the annual open day on 24th June. The area adjacent to the new facilities will become a communal garden and wildlife area.

89 year old Jack Stainton, the allotments’ oldest gardener who rarely misses a day on his plot is delighted at the award. He explained that whilst he lives very close to the allotment site he welcomed the news for the sake of the majority of plot-holders, particularly those with young families, who have

to limit their gardening time due to the current lack of toilet facilities.

Derry Harkin, who with his wife Jill and two young daughters have had a plot for around 5 years agreed wholeheartedly. “This will make a tremendous difference. We’d love to spend more time on our plot and the new facilities will enable us to do just that. The girls are really excited at the thought of being able to spend a full day on the allotment. We’ll really be able to keep on top of things now.”

The allotments have been in existence since the 1920s and there are currently 60 plot-holders growing fruit, vegetables and flowers.
