Conference chair Tom PeterBlankestijn,ManagingDirectorofSea2Cradle(invited),willsetthescenefortheday,presenting a bird’s eye view of the debate on how the shipping industry is preparing for stricter environmental limits. Will adapting first to new rules and regulations give way to new business and provide a way out of the crisis? AlfonsGuinier,SecretaryGeneraloftheEuropeanCommunityShipowners’Associations will voice the shipowners’ view and present some of the key issues shipowners will face in the short to medium term. Invited representatives of major shippers will present the customers’ view.

NEWTHISYEAR: SMI2012 will host a debate between the key players in the shipping industry: shipowners and bankers. New environmental regulations are under way, but where is the money going to come from to carry out compliance? Who is going to pay; customers, end consumers, government? Or, are these groups looking at shipping companies to shoulder the financial load? With the state that today’s shipping industry is in, many shipping companies are already having a hard time keeping their business afloat. After the moderated discussion there will be ample opportunity for the audience to question the panellists.

Following last year’s successful format for discussion, which engaged the entire audience and led to maximum cross fertilization of views and ideas, SMI2012 returns with a discussion in informal World Café style. Three introductory speakers from various backgrounds will open the floor for debate on the following topics:

A representative from the European Commission is invited to present an update on what’s happening at the EU level.
