For example, one woman had a brief reflexology session. She’s since gone to Mangawhai for the full deal, is raving about the treatment and has spread the word. I already know that at least one other person has booked in to get their health issues sorted. It’s likely others also got positive and ongoing benefits from the evening. Leigh says “lots of people were fantastic”, espe- cially Debbie Thornton and Joy Cullen. Her chil- dren - Brooke and Amanda - were also stars along with husband Grant who provided staff and a truck and a team of spunky waiters. When they got involved these people thought they were just organising a fun evening and rais- ing money. But, at the end of the day, they’ve given people much more which means that, they too, end up getting more out of the event than they ex- pected. For competing in the Rotorua Marathon on

the 6th of May.

Eileen walked the Marathon in a time of 7

hours and 20 minutes, finishing within the cut

off period for the race and receiving a T/Shirt

for her effort.

As one of the 1,950 people taking part, she

said it was an awesome experience and one

she would like to repeat!!

Last month local women enjoyed primping, preening and celebrating being female at an event that embodied community and team spirit. The Girls Indulgency Night was great fun, but what’s even better is that it’s generated un-dreamed of and unexpected positive spinoffs. The fundraiser, organised by Leigh Knightbridge with help from many others, earned about $2700 for Maungaturoto Primary School. About 50 people had trade stalls and provided massages, makeovers, manicures and more. Participants came from far and wide - Elite Beauty School in Whangarei had eight people there. The evening attracted 170 women. And while the intention was to get money to buy equipment for the school sandpit, people are en-joying benefits they certainly didn’t expect. For example, one woman had a brief reflexology session. She’s since gone to Mangawhai for the full deal, is raving about the treatment and has spread the word. I already know that at least one other person has booked in to get their health issues sorted. It’s likely others also got positive and ongoing benefits from the evening. Leigh says “lots of people were fantastic”, espe-cially Debbie Thornton and Joy Cullen. Non-profit organisations are urged to send in articles to

promote themselves, especially those that have paid up for

the year and are entitled to a free quarter page space. We

would love to hear from you! If you have an item you want

mentioned in the “Matters” you can either contact me at the

address below or drop it into the RED BOX in the window at

Tony’s Stationers in Hurndall Street. If it is an advert the

fees are printed on the top right of Page 1.

Real Town Maungaturoto

Real Town Maungaturoto has been successful in obtaining a grant from ASB Trust for new equipment for the playground. Council has already set aside funds for land-scaping the area. The use of these funds will enable the play-ground to be brought up to today's safety stan-dards giving the town a very attractive area for residents and travellers, enticing them to stop in Maungaturoto. Once the first draft of the concept plan is avail-able we will be consulting with various inter-ested groups to enable input from all different sectors. Further down the track when the weather dries up and we begin to put things to-gether we will be looking for volunteers to help as this will make our funding go further. Watch this space for updates. Anne Squires-Tantrum

THANK YOU

On behalf of the Maungaturoto Business Asso-ciation and Real Town Maungaturoto, I would

like to thank Kauri Park Nurseries for their very generous donation to the town, of plants to replant our tubs and the gardens. What a difference it has made to our Street. The tubs are once again tidy and the gardens are looking great with the lovely flaxes and grasses. Their expertise in showing us where to place the plants was also greatly appreciated. . MAUNGATUROTO PLAYCENTRE

Maungaturoto Playcentre is holding a Mystery Auction on Friday, June 9th. This fun event will be held at the Maungaturoto Country Club and the bar will be open. Please come along and support our centre and these local families in this fundraising effort. We have accomplished auctioneer, Don Riddle, leading the auction and karaoke maestro Paul Henare providing us with entertainment. Hundreds of dollars worth of prizes are up for grabs. It is only $5 at the door and bring along extra money if you want to bid for some of these awesome prizes. On the home front -- the centre is buzzing along nicely at the moment but we are desperate for anyone who has Course 3 with the Playcentre Assn as our Wednesday sessions are now unfunded. If you hold a current Course 3 and are interested in helping us out, please come along to our Wednesday session which runs from 12 noon to 2.30pm. The opener for that day is May Seager, you can give her a call at 4318494. Two of our mums are training as hard as they can over the next two terms to complete this qualification -- not an easy task with a family and household to run. A big thank you to people who have taken on extra jobs at the centre to keep it going, Dave Below learning the bulk funding role, Joy Rob-inson who is running the mystery auction, Jodie Passmore for standing in as secretary temporarily, Kelly Mischewski our new education officer and Cherie and Wayne for the new meal tables.

Homebuilders Community Services

Hello and welcome to June, the middle of the year already, everyone is talking about mid year Christmas dinners and cozy

nights around the fire.

We have been having a busy time as usual with workshops on parenting and healthy living recently completed. We have just run

a workshop on the Treaty of Waitangi which was attended by many people from out and around the kaipara plus staff from sur-

rounding community services as far down as Wellsford and across to Bream bay, so a great success as far as we are concerned,

we can network with these other service’s and communicate with each other which helps us all to work smarter and more in tune

with our communities.

We have placed an advert for all to see the kind of services we offer, it has been said

that some people are unsure of what we do, so we will repeat this ad as ongoing infor-

mation for you all.

If you have any inquiries please phone us on 09 4319080.

Upcoming workshops are as follows so make a note in your diary and give us a call to register…. all these courses are free and

don’t require you to spend any money… where else could you get this kind of opportunity?…only in the country

GE WORKSHOP – KAIWAKA

On 19th June Kaipara District Council are holding a workshop on Genetic Engineering (GE) in Kaiwaka. This is a council meeting but the public can attend and there should be some time for questions/comments. The background to the meeting is that a GE Report was commis-sioned which contains recommendations of practical things that local authorities can do to protect their ratepayers and environment from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), including out-right prohibition of GMO land uses. Graham Ramsey, our former Mayor and his Council declared Kaipara a GE -free Zone, but this has NO legal meaning! The new Mayor, Peter King, appears much more reluctant to act to pro-tect us from GE. Other councils have budgeted to undertake extensive community consultation re GMOs. KDC voted to hold a GE WORKSHOP first and Mayor Peter King insisted that ERMA also send a representative. So the GE Workshop is a chance for Simon Terry, the author, to explain the GE report and the options available to councils to act to protect their ratepayers, environment and council itself from the risks of GMOs and to detail the flaws in the way in which ERMA operates. ERMA and the Ministry for the Environment will also be speaking. It is Important that we have a good attendance to demonstrate the strength of feeling about GE so come along to the meet-ing. We need to ensure that Kaipara remains GE Free. Meeting details: Kaiwaka Hall, Monday the 19th of June, 10.30am to 3.30pm. Please contact Martina 431 5161 or [email protected] for more information.

REST HOME NEWS Hello again from the Rest Home, it’s been another busy month. We had quite a few younger volunteers over the school holidays which was really nice but everyone is back at school now so we are back to normal. The recreation people have asked me to ask does anyone have any Country & Western music videos that they would like to donate to the Rest Home as one of the residents really enjoys them. Our lady who was crocheting has now fin-ish a blanket for each bed in the Rest Home, thank you so much Helen, it has made all the rooms look much more homely. You will have seen Ginny around town on Fridays pushing wheelchairs & taking people for coffee, she now brings a friend along so more of the residents can get out & about on Fridays. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the people who have come in as volunteers this year, you have made a real difference to the residents lives & we look forward to seeing you again. That’s it from the Rest Home. Keep warm & dry for the winter.

KIDS FOR KIDS CONCERT WITH SUZANNE PRENTICE: Our choir, along with 9 other schools, performed with Suzanne Prentice on Tuesday night at Forum North in Whangarei. They were part of a choir of 340 children from Whangarei and surrounding districts who enjoyed the experience of working with Suzanne. A great big thank you to all the children who had worked so hard to learn the songs, to the parents who came on the bus to the rehearsal, and drove chil-dren to the concert in the evening. Thank you also to Mrs Metcalfe for training the choir and or-ganising the trip. I am sure everybody enjoyed the experience. GIRLS INDULGENCE EVENING: A huge thank you to Debbie Thornton, Diane Boon, Susan McRae, Joy Cullen, Jan Schimanski, Kathleen Rich, Paula Mooney, Heather Lupton, Tina Holst and the many helpers on the night, the sponsors and most of all Leigh Knightbridge for organising and running what was (I hear) a very successful evening. Thank you also to Bob Clyde from the Pot Shop for donating a water feature to be auc-tioned. SCHOOL CROSS-COUNTRY: By the time this goes to print, our annual cross-country will have been held on Tuesday 30th May. A team will be selected to represent our school at Bream Bay on 8th June. Good luck to everyone participating! YUMMY APPLE STICKERS: We are once again collecting ‘Yummy’ apple stickers. Families collect the ‘Yummy’ cut out label from the 2kg apple bags or collect stickers off the apples them-selves, and the school cashes them in for sport equipment of our choice. Parents can have sticker sheets at home if they wish, either ask at the office or go to www.yummyfruit.co.nz. We received $340 worth of equipment for the stickers we collected last year. There has now been more than $850,000.00 worth of sports equip-ment given to schools. This fruit can be found at New World, Pak ‘N’ Save and participating stores.

AFFCO BOBBY CALF COLLECTION: For every calf processed through one of AFFCO’s plants the sum of 20 cents per calf plus GST will be given to a school nominated by the farmer. We would like to thank AFFCO for their support, and would appreci-ate you nominating our school. If you have any que-ries please contact our local agent – Mr Neil Donaldson 4318 357. BUS BAY: Please, everybody who drives into the bus bay – slow down!!! A number of people are putting children and other vehicles at risk by driving far too quickly into and down the drive. Also, a reminder to please buckle your children in. CAN RECYCLING: The PTA has just emptied the can bin (great work Paula, Mel, Tina, Amy). Thank you to everyone who supports this fundrais-ing. Please only put cans in the bin (at the top of the bus bay steps), no rubbish / cardboard. FUTURE EVENTS: Mon 5th June Queen’s Birthday Tue 6th June PTA Meeting 7.30 Staffroom Thurs 8th June Bream Bay Cross Country Thurs 15th June Councillors Ride Around Day 19th/20th June Parent – Teacher Discussions Fri 30th June Term 2 Ends Mon 17th July Term 3 Begins Fri 22nd Sept Term 3 Ends

MAUNGATUROTO GARDEN CLUB

The May meeting was a trip to Gordon and Christine Smarts garden “Perry Green Downs”, near Te Hana. The property is on a hill side, where we found up to 70 Protea Trees growing, most of them in full bloom. Flowers were alive with Bees, looking for the very sweet nectar, with some varieties of trees appropriately named “Sugar bush”!!. This garden also boasts some very unusual varieties of Protea. Lunch was in the sunshine, after walking a bushy path past a pond populated by a lot of Ducks!! Next stop was a Native Tree Nursery, with an excellent range of coloured flax on sale.

NEXT MONTH - 21st June — A.G.M & POT LUCK LUNCH To be held in the Supper Room at the Centennial Hall, View Street, Maungaturoto at Noon.

FARM LIVING

Rosy-cheeked olive-picking peasants at work

An invitation to spend a day picking olives with other “rosy-cheeked peasants” promised a harvest lunch and eligibility for a bottle of oil. I thought the idea sounded great, but should have been warned when Rex chose to go fishing instead. I was the first to arrive and, for an anxious moment, wondered if the other peasants knew some-thing I didn’t. But they dribbled in and soon eight of us were hard at it. The reason peasants are rosy-cheeked soon became apparent. They’re hot and bothered from all that hard work, and you never hear about the cricked necks they get from picking olives above head height. At least olive trees are friendly; they have flexible branches and you don’t get stabbed by sharp twigs. We wore gloves so we could run our hands down the branches and soon the air was filled with the gentle thud of olives raining on the old sheets and curtains we had lain on the ground. We picked from two types of tree: Koroneiki from Greece whose tiny olives yield lots of tasty oil, and the progeny of a massive tree planted in the 1850’s by Far North settlers. These trees have been unimaginatively-named J5 and we olive-picking peasants have a plea to people high up in olive circles - please come up with a more poetic name. After each tree was picked we’d pour the harvest into cane baskets which reinforced our sense of peasantness, and plastic laundry baskets which didn’t. It was tedious work so it’s no wonder olive grove owners joke nervously that after a couple of har-vests they’ve worked their way through all their friends. Tellingly, a couple who planned to plant 20 trees on their lifestyle block decided after a few hours that three would be a good number. And by lunchtime we suspected today’s peasants would watch our labours with bemusement be-cause they would sensibly buy their olive oil from the supermarket. This was our friends’ third olive harvest. In their first year they were done by lunchtime, whereas this harvest was a day-and-a-bit mission that produced 350kg of olives. And picking is just the first step - the olives had to be cleaned, separated from twigs and leaves then pressed. They yielded an (apparently) impressive 42.7 litres of oil, or 122 350ml bottles. When I got home I proudly showed my digital photo of the trailer-load of olives we picked to Rex who said if he’d had the camera he could have shown me the monster snapper that got away. Frankly, I didn’t see his problem. After a few hours sunning himself in a boat he caught enough fish for several feeds, whereas I slaved all day for a cup and a half of olive oil. Fortunately the de-licious lunch and a few glasses of wine afterwards dulled the pain. In fact, I might even help out again next year. Do you own any of the following . . . We’re still finding homes for assorted things left here over summer. Please get in touch if you’re missing a black size 18 cardigan, three-quarter sleeve (doesn’t fit any of our whanau), a couple of frisbees, a burgundy and gold chiller bag (we’ve used it once, thanks) and a blue and turquoise painted bowl that’s ideal for dips. I decided to claim the stylish orange cap, but there was a name inside it so, damn, it’s been returned.

Thanks to Rae for her contribution

Play the six team Division One grade in Whangarei Club competition. We have completed the first round in a clear second place behind Parihaka. All teams are providing stern competition each week. In the games won, the winnings goals have often been scored in the last ten minutes. Practices are held fortnightly in Maungaturoto. This does have an effect on performance but reduces travel expenses for the players living outside the area. We play at noon each week at the Kensington Park Hockey Centre so if you have spare time we would love to see you there.

Several girls have joined the Maungakaramea B Grade team for this season. Paul Nairn is coaching them on the new turf at Otamatea High School.

MAROHEMO HALL NEWS: June 2006

Yes we have held our AGM and yes we have filled our commit-tee positions again—but none of the faces have changed!!!! Al-

though we are a most attractive bunch we would love to have some new faces to

look at our meetings, so if you feel inspired …...call Heather on

As you will know by now the International Rally will not

be gracing our roads this year, but we will have the Rally

of New Zealand, and it will add drama and dust to our

lives! We have the

opportunity to help out and at the same time raise some

valuable funds for our hall. If you are a local and would

like to be involved we’d love to have you, so call Ted

Maungaturoto Squash Club News June 2006

Business House ended with a fantastic turnout of players to contest the prize money. The Teams lead by Peter Cave and Colin Storey took out the top spots and got to negotiate the splitting of the winnings. Thank you to all those who took part in Business House and to those generous souls who

sponsored teams. The weekend of the 19th to 21st May saw our local Open Tournament held and, though numbers were down on last

year, we still had a pretty busy weekend. As well as trying to win their divisions players were also out to win the George Tana Memorial Trophy. This went to Brent Lewis who out-classed Devon Cameron 3-0 in the Men's’ Open Final. In the top women's’ division Heather Saies managed to hold off the

in-form Fiona Moselen to win in the fifth game. A big thank you to all our sponsors for this tournament, and

to the many club members who helped it run smoothly. Thanks also to club members, both recent and long-term who

entered and provided some entertaining squash.
