Editor’s Note As the cover page indicates, schools domi-nate much of this month’s Matters. There’s not only a lot happening in our local schools, but also a lot of fund-raising going on to sup-port it. And it’s clear that the need for money has provoked some interesting ideas about how to persuade people to hand it over.
On page 6, there’s an announcement about what might seem like an unrelated event: the AGM of the Maungaturoto Centennial Com-munity Centre Hall Committee on September 19th. Now I know what sight of the letters AGM does to most of us — and I have to say that the long name of said committee doesn’t exactly echo with excitement. But don’t turn over just yet. There’s an important issue here.
When it was built, the Centennial Hall (let’s stick to that more manageable name) was a symbol of what the community could achieve, and it had an important role to serve. Since it was handed back to the town by the Council, however, it has been struggling. One reason is the excessive level of rates that it bears, but another is that its place in the community seems to have been lost. As a consequence, a rather depressing and vicious circle has formed, in which a few dedicated people try to raise money to keep the hall going so that it will still be there next year … so that they can then raise more money … and so on.
Clearly that’s not the way it should be. If we want people to give their time to keeping the hall going, we need to decide first what we want it for. That’s not a question a committee should answer: it’s up to the community to speak. And that’s the purpose of the AGM — to hear the community voice.
But let’s be clear. The topic of discussion shouldn’t be: “We’ve got a hall — how can we fund it?” That merely leads us back to where we are — trying to invent uses for it, just to keep it going. Nor will reminiscences about the past get us very far; for the world is differ-ent now. The question is this: “Given what already exists in the town (including the facili-ties at the Country Club and RSA) what added value can the hall provide?” Answer that, and we can then discuss how to extract that value —and fund the hall in the process.
So, why not go along to the meeting on 19th and have your say. Or, if you can’t attend, pass a note to one of the committee. But whatever you do, don’t just assume that it’s someone else’s problem!

Beautification Project has moved to town!Beautification Project has moved to town!Beautification Project has moved to town!Beautification Project has moved to town!
The 15th and 16th of September is going to be a big weekend for Maungaturoto as there will be major plantings outside Dreams, the Library and St John. These areas were cleared in Au-gust to make way for the new plants and trees that are going up in town. To minimise disrup-tion, we need to complete all the main work at these sites on these two days — so if you can, please come along and help.
This project aims to enhance the town not only for the 150th celebrations but also for the resi-dents for years to come. It’s also hoped that it will attract more people to stop in the town and spend money here.
How can you help? How can you help? How can you help? How can you help?
As we’ve emphasised before, this project is for everyone’s benefit, and it’s open to ALL resi-dents and businesses in Maungaturoto. We would like to see everybody involved in some way. We always welcome assistance with the clearing, digging, weeding and planting, but there are lots of other ways to help if that’s not your thing. We are especially grateful for:
● Donations of plants, mulching materials (e.g. bark), compost and good topsoil;
● Loan of gardening equipment, including wheelbarrows;
● Help with transport.
So if you have some unwanted or surplus plants in your garden, let us know: we’ll even come and dig them out for you if they will be of use!
If you have a ute or a trailer that you can make available for our work days and working bees, we’d love to hear from you.
And people who turn up with food and drink are always much appreciated (at our last working bee in August, Bee Jays kindly provided a tray of buns for which we were all very grateful)!
Otherwise donations of money are, of course, extremely useful — from $1 upwards. To donate money you can:
● Either deposit money directly into our ac-count: 06 0365 0008021 00. Please insert Beautification and your name as a reference;
● Or send a cheque to Maungaturoto Resi-dents Association, P O Box 113, Maunga-turoto — though please include a note to say it’s for the Beautification project and whether you would like a receipt (and if so, an address to send it to!).
Please call Richard on 431 8383 or phone
027 431 8382 if you want to help or need more information. You can also join us on Facebook where you can get latest updates and work in progress, including lots of photographs and plans of what the whole project hopes to achieve (search for Maungaturoto). Check out www.welcometomaungaturoto.com

Last weekend Maungaturoto Hotel held a clas-sic car rally which brought out car enthusiasts in their droves. The rally attracted over 230 entrants, including cars and motorcycles. Maungaturoto Primary School fundraising com-mittee were invited to attend and took a gold coin collection to put towards their Rotorua fundraiser. They earned $564 on the day. "Everybody was happy, it was a big success,” said Katherine the local publican. “We were delighted to see the primary school benefit from the car show and we hope to involve them in future activities”.
Another more unusual part of the fundraising campaign is a calf rearing scheme. Farmers agree to rear a calf and then sell it with all prof-its being contributed toward the primary school fundraising efforts. There is a range of prizes on offer for those participating and so far seven farmers have signed up to the scheme. The primary school is hoping to add to this before the end of the calving season and farmers will-ing to participate are being asked to telephone Kim Allen on 09 431 8445 to register.

August meeting
On Thursday 16th August members met at the Centennial Hall and, after the meeting, were given an extremely fascinating talk by John “Birdman” Kendrick who single-handedly brought New Zealand birdsong to our radio-waves (Radio New Zealand’s Na-tional and Concert stations). He is also a talented wildlife- and cinema-photographer. Many of the bird calls played today were made by John forty years ago. As a Wildlife Service audio-visual officer for twenty years he travelled to remote parts of New Zealand to record bird songs.
During John’s career with the Wildlife Service from the early 1960s he was a photographer and made many films on subjects such as endangered saddlebacks, the sub-Antarctic Islands and Canadian geese. He has in-spired thousands of school pupils with his presentations on wildlife and conservation.
John, is now 90 and lives in Waipu, and has been a member of Forest and Bird for more than fifty years, and is still involved with con-servation projects in Northland. Members were really impressed with John’s obvious love of birds and his interesting life.
September meeting
The September meeting will again be held at the Centennial Hall, on Thursday 20th Sep-tember at 1 p.m. The decorative theme is “Spring”. Bring along your “Garden Hints” for discussion.
New members are very welcome.
Garden notes for September
Growth will be rapid in the garden this month as buds, flowers, bulbs and seeds are sprouting. However, be aware of any late frosts.
Finish tree and shrub planting.
Spray peaches to prevent brown rot. Also spray apple trees or hang pheromone traps in the branches.
There will be new season’s growth on citrus —new leaves and flower buds appearing. Apply citrus fertiliser around the base of the trees.
Roses will be well advanced with new shoots. Apply mulch to the base of all bushes along with rose fertiliser.
Maungaturoto Garden Club
Greetings to Everyone,
The 21st July was a busy night for the RSA, with our annual Midwinter Xmas meal preceded by the presentation of the New Zealand Special Service award to Noel Smith. I must take this op-portunity to thank Cathy and Robin Weatherhog again, not just for their typically excellent food,
but also for their supreme organisation and management of the evening’s activities. Seventy people left, both well fed and full of festive spirit, some even managing to dance the night away
to the superb band.
Work continued this month on improving the RSA building, this time moving inside. Barrie Davis, in particular, should be congratulated on his phenomenal efforts in cleaning and redeco-
rating the inside of the hall. The RSA is a completely voluntary organisation, and it is due to the efforts of individual members that it continues to thrive, so an extra thanks goes to all those
members who continue to support us, even if it is just by popping in and saying hello.
Finally, subscriptions are due for renewal. If you have not paid your subs please do so now.
Regards,
Terry McCook, President

Primary School Camp provokes some interesting ways of raising funds Eating donuts has got to be one of the nicest ways to fundraise and its one method that is appealing to children at Maungaturoto Primary. They will be playing their part to help fundraise for next year's senior camp by ordering donuts on nominated Fridays dur-ing the term, along with soup on "Soup Days". These are some of the novel ideas parents and teachers have come up with to raise the $24,000 needed to get 55 children and adults to Rotorua in March next year.
Also under-way is a scrap metal drive, which is being run in conjunction with Alexander Scrap Metals. The community is encouraged to drop off any large-scale metal items such as old dishwash-ers, washing machines or old water heaters that may be cluttering up their yard or garage.
Instead of occupying landfills, these massive items will be sorted into various metals (e.g. steel, aluminium, copper, iron) and on-sold so they can be recycled into new materials. "This scrap metal drive is a perfect way to recycle and raise money for a good cause." said May Seager, fundraising coordinator.
The scrap metal drive will run for three months from August to October. All people need to do is gather up their scrap metal and take it down to Alexander Scrap Metals (2 Blakey Road, Maungaturoto) and tell them that it’s for the primary school fundraiser.
Anything that has metal in it will be accepted including fridges, freezers, tapware, wheelbar-rows, lawnmowers, old pipe work, kitchen sinks, nuts, bolts, springs, cans, BBQ lids, washing machines and driers.

OTAMATEA GREYPOWER
May meeting
Our May speaker was one of the most interest-ing and poignant we have had. Tony Mundell told us about his last 30 years of employment and his experiences as a Psychopaedic Nurse. It was a story of empathy, caring and humour, and when he related his experiences with some of these young, disabled people, his hushed audi-ence shed a few silent tears. We appreciated his talk very much and it showed us another side of this very nice ‘gentle’ man.
Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting was held on July 25th, and was well attended. It resulted in a change of officers and a few new committee members. Amongst other changes, Patricia Hunt was elected as the new secretary.
Our usual monthly meeting followed, after a cup of tea, beginning with a talk by Joyce Brooks, of Brooks Motors, Maungaturoto. She very kindly stepped in at the last moment to take the place of Patricia Hunt who, because of the loss of her voice, could not talk of her recent trip to Canada.
Joyce spoke of how a simple “cream run” devel-oped into the many services that our town en-joys today. Amazing!
Future meeting times
Following the AGM in July, our meetings are be-ing held at 2pm, but the Committee will meet at 1.30pm. This enables the Committee to read through correspondence — often lengthy and involved letters — and extract any relevant ma-terial for your information. All are welcome to be present during Committee meetings, or just arrive at 2 o’clock if you prefer.
By the time you read this, Patricia Hunt’s talk
will already have happened (on Wednesday
29th August). The next meeting will be on Sep-
tember 26th, with a surprise guest and topic!.
Come and join our group. New members are
always welcome.
Joan Bolton and Patricia Hunt
Editor’s note. Due to what is called a technical prob-
lem (i.e. the editor deleted it by mistake!) the report
from Grey Power was omitted from the August Mat-
ters. It has been incorporated into this report. My
apologies to all concerned.

Well it’s almost spring! Are you over the rain yet? It is excellent to report that our callout numbers are down from this time last year. This must mean that everyone is being more fire-safe and taking care out on the roads. Thank you from all the Team at Maungaturoto brigade.
On the 18th July, we had a house fire that was caused by faulty electrical equipment, The occu-pants rung us and thanked us for saving 80% of their possessions, This is an extremely good re-sult considering that we had to travel 25 km to get to the fire. Good work team!
Stay safe and enjoy spring as the warmer weather comes.

We have been very humbled and strengthened by the wonderful support and practical help that we have received from so many friends and organizations after Vernon’s sudden passing.
Vernon loved this town, and you have proved him right: Maungaturoto is very special. Susan, Kevin and their families, join me in thanking you all: there are too many people to name indi-vidually.
My love and thanks

Rotorua 2013
Every second year our Year 5 and 6 students have their school camp in Rotorua. The children
always look forward to this week-long adven-ture. The camp has been made more feasible to
parents over the years by strong parent and community support with fund-
raising, making it possible to
subsidise the cost of each child. As you can see above, there are
plenty of opportunities to sup-port the camp from cake stalls,
to soup days, sausage sizzles and any other adventures the
fundraising committee set out
to do. We have set a goal of $24,000.00 to be raised by
March 2013. As you can see there is a long way to go. Please
support our children anyway you
can.
You can contact Karyn Hodgson (09) 431 8380
or May Seager 4318 494 if you wish to enquire as to how you can be of help.
Roll Growth
Recently we have had significant growth in the
number of new entrant children enrolling at Maungaturoto Primary School. The roll increase
has resulted in class numbers growing above 20 students, which is not ideal for new entrant
classes. We are expecting up to another 20
new entrant enrolments between now and the end of term 4. With our current class set up,
this would result in room 5 and 6 class sizes growing to 30 students.
The Board of Trustees have agreed to appoint another teacher for term 4 in 2012. This will
allow us to reduce the current class size for
Rooms 5 and 6.
We will be creating a class of Year 1 children
that will be based in Room 10, which is located next to the library.
The Room 10 children will be taught by Mrs
Sally Steiner. Sally has a very good understand-ing and knowledge of the junior school pro-
grammes and she will be working very closely with the other junior teachers as part of the
Junior Learning Team.
If you have a child who is due to start with us
in 2013, please contact the school office to
complete a pre-enrolment form. This will help us to prepare for your child’s arrival.
Lost Property
Every term our lost property increases dra-
matically. This usually leaves us with no choice but to give it all away. There is literally hun-
dreds of dollars’ worth of clothing left behind at school each term. This emphasises the need
to please names on all clothing/shoes,
lunch boxes etc. We hold up all clothing on a Friday afternoon at assembly and you will be
surprised how many children do not recognise their clothing. The lost property is located
through the school office: please feel free to
come any time to see if anything belongs to your child.

High School Open DayStudents from Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka, Paparoa, Mangawhai, Matakohe and Waipu attended Otamatea High School’s interactive Open Day. There were also several families from even further afield.
Otamatea’s Kapa Haka Roopu led the powhiri, while Katarina Maxwell and Ihaka Reid performed the himene and whaikorero. The Deputy Principal, Roy Fletcher, welcomed everyone, and explained the school’s vision of “Today’s Learners, Tomorrow’s Leaders” and the dominant values of respect and integrity. Otamatea High School’s vision of leadership is an inclusive one, where everyone can be a leader by setting a positive example to others. He went on the explain that the school’s educational philosophy is “Catering for the learning needs of every student”.
The visiting students were then guided on an interactive journey around the school by Year 13 students, who were keen to share their positive experiences with their enthusiastic charges. Experiences included decorating cup cakes, playing musical instruments and art.
Each of the learning areas was visited. In science, students completed an experiment, in drama fun improvisations. In art they made a wall plaque. They also had an introduction to Otamatea’s unique ‘Bruce ball’ in the gymnasium. In maths they worked on a computer programme. They experienced taha Maori through Maori games. In the interval they returned to the hall to be treated to a concert from Vybes, Otamatea’s successful Rockquest band.
Both parents and students were fascinated by the displays in the hall – particularly those from English, Social Science, Science and Technology. At the end of the day some of the parents and students took the opportunity to visit the Aviation Academy and were incredulous when the director, Paul Morrison, explained that high school students were building an aeroplane. The final act for the visitors was to get a sausage which was cooked by some of the Year 13 students.
An excellent day was had by the Otamatea High School students and all of the visiting students left talking enthusiastically about their experience.
Enrolments for 2013
We are taking enrolments for the new school year now. Parents who are interested should contact the school on 0800 682 628 or 09 431 8230. We are visiting schools on the following dates in September to carry out enrolments: Kaiwaka - Tuesday 18th; Waipu - Wednesday 26th; Maungaturoto - Tuesday 25th and Thursday 27th; Mangawhai Beach – Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th. Parents who live outside these areas, please contact Nikki Donaldson at Otamatea High School to make an interview appointment.
Open Day at OHS

There’s a little way to go yet,
before this area is complete. It will take
time, of course,
for every-thing to get established and the
flowers to bloom – though already some of the rhodos are in flower,
bringing a lovely splash of colour to the garden. But the picture we all
started off with (right) of what we were aiming for no longer looks like
just a dream. We’re on the way!
Thanks go to everyone who’s been involved—and most of all Richard
and Diana for their tireless enthusi-asm and hard work.
Work on the corner of Hurndall Road and Whaka Street has
made good progress, and though it’s not yet
finished, you can get an idea of what it will
look like at the end.
The top photo, left, shows what the site
looked like before we started.
In the 3-4 months since then, the old over-
grown shrubs and weeds have been removed, the whole area dug
over, drainage coil laid where needed, a path laid out, new plant-
ing done, much of the area mulched and artificial rocks created
(2nd photo, left: yes, even the edi-tor helped on occasions!).
The plants have included lots of donations from people around
town — and even a num-
ber of rho-dendron
bushes kindly given to us by
the Rhodeden-
dron Society of Auckland.
We’re on our way! Whaka Street corner begins to bloom….
Page 19 Maungaturoto Matters
Meanwhile, Albie and his ‘150-Up’ team have been making significant progress on the wharf site. The mass of weeds and undergrowth has been cleared out, flaxes planted, and some heavy-duty work done to create a parking area and lookout (photo left). The next step is to obtain resource consent, so that construction of the wharf can start.
Again, our starting point is the set of plans which Richard and Diana
drew up for us (above). These can be seen in the windows of the Li-
brary and Dreams).
During the working bee on August 18th, an eager team of helpers
took out some of the untidy trees, and cleared most of the garden areas, ready for the next phase
(photos, right).
This is planned for another major
working bee on 15th and 16th Sep-
tember, when the old concrete will
be cut out and the new concrete ar-
eas laid. That makes it a crucial
weekend—so if you can, come
along and help!
With Whaka Street now in a state where it can rest a while, to give the plants a chance to settle in, attention has turned to the next area on our list: between St John and Dreams.
…. So attention turns to the main street … and we see progress at the wharf site

Our generally old churches have a fresh and un-
usual approach in meeting the challenge of de-
clining and ageing attendance most Sundays.
Instead of the more conventional sole vicar or
minister, the Paparoa Parish — encompassing six
widely scattered and picturesque churches and
their settings — now has three co-priests!
This is only possible because of the dedication
and commitment of those involved: husband and
wife Richard and Colleen Binns, whose roots are
firmly in the north and Kaipara district at Pahi;
and Dianne Hawken, commuting to the Man-
gawhai and Hakaru district from Snells Beach
(also fully supported by her husband Kevin). All
of them are giving of themselves for little or no
financial gain; again unusual in a generally rather
materialistic and secular age. They have already,
in the short time available, visited many folk and
are keen to be very pro-active in pastoral care.
There are many in our communities who feel iso-
lated and lonely and it is the heart (and prayerful)
concern of this rather unique and special ministry
team to make a real and meaningful difference.
To this end they are actively encouraging and em-
powering those already involved in the churches
to ‘roll up their sleeves’ and pitch in more.
Let us wish them the very best; our churches are
still relevant if only at Christmas , marriage time,
birth and death – they are part of who we are as
humans.

Reviews by Sheryl Logan
Arty Farties is up and running again!
Anne and her supporters have shown that it
takes more than a fire bombing to get them
down. Public support has been fantastic and
negotiations are starting for rebuilt premises.
The AGM was held on Tuesday 14th August and a warm welcome is extended to incoming com-mittee members and heartfelt thanks ex-pressed to retiring committee members for their invaluable help in the past.
We will soon be starting up the Crafty Kids Club again – so watch this space.
August 27th will see the start of a beginners’ patchwork group at the Congregational Church Hall, at 7pm. Bring your own sewing machine, lace, ribbon, cotton, buttons, etc. Phone Anne Shanks on 09 431 6229 for further details.
Our roadside stall is still going well and many thanks are extended to members of the public for their continued support.

About your community’s social and sports club
The Maungaturoto Country Club, in Bickerstaffe Road on the left before Otamatea High School, has several affiliated clubs: bowls, motorcross, repertory, rugby, squash, and equestrian
whose members also belong to the Maungaturoto Country Club. It’s also possible to be a social member of the club. The annual subscription is $25.
The membership structure is required by law for all clubs nationwide as it enables them Club to comply with liquor licensing laws. Clubs can’t get the same type of liquor licence as cafés or hotels, but must have a Club Liquor Licence. This enables them to serve alcohol to members
and their guests - guests must be signed in by their host.
Guests can visit three times before becoming members. If you belong to a club, then your part-ner or spouse also needs to be a member to enjoy the club’s hospitality on a regular basis. The Country Club is in breach of its licence when people bring alcohol onto the property without
permission; however this is sometimes granted for large private functions. The Club gets a ‘Special Licence’ for events that are open to the public and/or non-members, e.g. weddings,
performances, etc. The Kaipara District Council manages Club licences which are enforced by the Police. In the
event Licensing Authorities find the Club is not complying with its licence, the Club would be required to close for a set period and the staff on duty, all of whom are volunteers, would be
subject to a substantial fine. Please play your part in ensuring the Club abides by the law.
The Maungaturoto Country Club is a charitable society which is overseen by a committee. The
club and bar are managed by volunteers. The bar and café are open from 6pm on Thursdays
and Fridays. The club is available for private and club functions (it has a sports bar, function lounge and private dining room) and operates as a Parkover Property for campervans.
The committee is grateful for the community’s participation and support and welcomes ideas
and feedback.

Hawks 2012
Season
HAWKS BEAT WAIPU TO STAY IN
PREMIER DIVISION
Otamatea 15 Waipu 0
After the loss the week before to eventual com-petition winners Mid-Western, the Otamatea Hawks finished bottom of the league. This com-mitted them to a decider against the 2nd Divi-sion Champions Waipu to see if they remained in the Northland Premier competition. The Hawks rose to the occasion and came out vic-tors by 15 to 0.
There is always a fierce rivalry when these two sides meet and this encounter was no differ-ent. The Hawks scored twice in the first half and kicked a penalty to lead 15-0 at halftime, the forwards finishing off a number of drives at the line before some simple passing put full-back Soon Marurai across the line, out wide. This scoreline remained as a number of fights and yellow cards dominated the second half. Although the slippery conditions evened the playing field, Otamatea were never threatened by their Brynderwyn neighbours, whose illegal tactics at the breakdown instigated much of the ill discipline. Saying this, the lack of compo-sure from both teams marred the game and tainted the victory for all involved.
This is the second year running that the Hawks have defended their right to stay in the Premier competition, and they can rest easy that they comfortably sit on the right side of the huge gap that exists between the two divisions.
Thanks...
As this was the final game of the season, I would like to thank the Committee and manag-ers for their tireless work and all the sponsors, supporters and players who have aided in the continued revival of Otamatea Rugby.

Squash News
The squash season is still moving along at a great pace. We’ve now seen some great mas-ters in action and are down to three men and three women. Who will face the challenge and emerge our masters champion for the year? Watch this space!
There have been a few really tight ladder chal-lenges recently and a few games still to play. There is still a weekly draw for club members but club champs will begin in a weeks time.
There’s always space for a keen newbie or those who just need to dust the old racket off and come down for a hit. New players are al-ways welcome, and if you’re not sure it’s for you, we can organise a no-obligation trial. Or just come down and have a look: Thursday and Friday nights from 5.30 until 8.30pm. Please contact Mel Coates on 09 431 8720.
Junior club nights are still running on Monday nights: contact Tina Holst on 09 431 8180.
We run a ladies morning on Tuesdays from 9.30am. Its great fun and helps your fitness. Beginners are welcome. If you are interested please contact Emma Ihaka on 09 431 8988.
With tournaments happening almost every sec-ond weekend in Northland it’s always good to hear that our club is being represented.

Congratulations to all the players who received awards and thank you to all other team mem-bers: without a team, there is no game. Also, without coaches and managers, there would be no teams so a big thank you to Andrew Swad-ling, Craig Fergus, Tukiwai Flavell, Grant McCallum and Craig Shadbolt for giving up their time to coach the kids. And thanks to their man-agers Karyn Hodgson, Jacqui Donald and Brigette Musgrave, Bev Small, and Jill Wilson.
We would also like to thank Brett in the kitchen for providing Player of the Day meals; Brett Coates and Shay Hawkins for organising and running the trail ride that allowed us the funds to get our fields up to scratch; and everyone (too many to name) who gave up their time to help with the upkeep of the facilities. Thank you to all the parents who helped in the tuck shop and to everyone who has supported our fund-raising efforts over the season. Many of you will have purchased a ticket or two for our major raffle and we are pleased to announce the win-ners:
1st prize (42in Panasonic TV): Mike Donald
2nd prize (2 nights at Ruakaka Beach Holiday Park): Craig Garnett
3rd prize (Blueray DVD player): Kenny Manuel
Finally, it is with regret that we say goodbye to our current president, Craig Shadbolt. Sadly we could not convince him to stay on for another season, so we will bid him farewell and wish him all the best for his new ventures.

The new development of six new OYO units is nearing completion; major construction has nearly finished , The final landscaping is waiting for the weather to co-operate.
Three units have been sold and are occupied, and we welcome these new residents to the village. The fourth unit has been sold and will be occupied towards the end of the month.
That leaves two units waiting for an owner. Take a drive up Riverview Place and check out the view .
The quality of the workmanship is a credit to all concerned. Our local contractors, Brogan Builders, Kaipara Plumbing, Hubands and Extreme Joinery have helped to create a really nice place to live, and with the adja-cent rest home and the caring staff, future security and wellbeing is assured.

KAURI MUSEUM MERVYN
STERLING SCHOLARSHIP
Courtney Windsor has been awarded The Kauri Museum Mervyn Sterling Memorial Scholar-ship. This is offered yearly by the Otamatea Kauri and Pioneer Museum Trust Board to en-courage undergraduate study and applied re-search in New Zealand in the fields of environ-mental conservation, ecology, natural heritage and Northland history (especially Otamatea).
Courtney is currently enrolled in a BSc degree at Waikato University and is planning to major in Earth Science. Her interest is in pursuing the study of sustainable management of Earth’s energy, water, mineral, soil and coastal re-sources. Her main affiliation to the Otamatea area is through her grandfather, Ross Windsor, who was Principal of Matakohe School for seven years during the 1960s. Over the years she has also had involvement with the Kaipara Region.
Bet Nelley, CEO Kauri Museum
We have had a very busy month in August. We had a flax weaving workshop and have had more
colour themed days. One of these was devoted
to ma (white), which involved making sushi . An-other was pango (black): cupcake decorating
with black coconut, icing and choc decorations. Others were kowhai (yellow), pakaka (brown),
and kakariki (green) – all with play-dough made to match.
Each session has joined in with the Primary
School’s Jump Jam Sessions and we also had a class visit to Room 6 and Mrs Wilson.
We wish a happy 5th birthday to Mihi – although your time with us was short, we will miss you
and we wish you all the best for school!
We welcome Julia with Manu and Amelia, and Amy with Tania.
Remember also that we appreciate any empty printer toner cartridges for recycling. You can
drop them off at Playcentre during our session times or at 100% Fergus Appliances.
Civil Defence update Two months ago, you all received a Civil De-fence sheet to complete and a yellow booklet (Get ready, Get thru), which gave some hints of what to do in an emergency. It is hoped that by now you have worked out a telephone network within your area (i.e. your neighbours), so that you can support each other should the need arise.
On Wednesday, 26th September, the New Zea-land Shakeout takes place. At 9.26 am on that date, it is suggested that you practice the “Drop, Cover and Hold” drill. Your local committee will be checking its telephone tree at that time, and it may be a good time to im-plement your own telephone trees and think about all your neighbours and any special needs they may have. You can find more in-formation on the website: www.getthru.govt.nz.
While this promotion is earthquake-related, it would also be a good opportunity for you to practise your emergency response.
Your Civil Defence Committee

Answers below (upside down!) Stepwise Spring is on the way — or so the grass on my
lawn tells me. So, to give all the plants a help-
ing hand, this month you need to change
C O L D into W A R M by changing one letter at a time, to create a new intermediate word. (Target 5 moves or
fewer.)
Synonym sums To solve the sums below, you have to find the synonyms for the first two words or phrases
that, when joined together, make a synonym for the third word or phrase. For example:
the solution to OATS + BOWL = FLOURISH would be BRAN+DISH = BRANDISH).
FOREHEAD + CROON = READING
OUTGROWTH + INSECT = COURTEOUS HAIR + LINE = GROOVE
ARRIVE + PASS AWAY = FARCES
Anagrams The letters in the three phrases below can be
re-arranged into the names of three famous politicians. (Hint: none of them are New Zea-
landers—I did say famous!). 1. THAT GREATER CHARM
2. GOSH A GROWING TEEN
3. HUGE LEADER CALLS
Beat the editor! Last week I spent a pleasant hour in Whangarei
listening to the Midday Music in the Old Li-
brary. There’s something on every Wednesday. As I sat there I tried to work out how many
words I could get from the town’s name – and it seemed to be a lot. How many can you get?
W H A N G A R E I Remember, the aim is to create as many words as possible. Words should use each letter only
once, must have at least 3 letters, must not be real names (e.g. of people, places) and should
not be rude! Editor’s target: 53 words (though there may be more!).
