Day in the country with Home & Garden Tour

That age-old pastime - a day in the country - will take on new and exciting possibilities at The

Otamatea High School PTCA Home & Garden Tour.

The Home & Garden Tour, being held on Saturday, November 20, includes 10 of theOtamatea areas most remarkable homes and gardens, each of which has a very differentcharacter.

Among the homes included are Lockwood and Alexandra Smith's renovated art-deco homeWoodleigh, the architecturally significant Haigh House, the Swiss-flavoured Zweisheim, themajestic natives and flowers of Bushy Park and the historic colonial homesteads of Batley Houseand The Pines.

Otamatea High School PTCA Chairperson Pam Chapman says that Otamatea, which stretchesalong the northern side of the Kaipara Harbour, has a distinctive character and is rich in history.

Many people drive through Otamatea without realising the treasures that abound just a few kilome-tres off State Highway 12. In pioneer days, it was at the centre of the kauri industry and pastoralfarms were established.

The areas character is well-represented in a cross-section of homes and gardens. There are re-cently renovated homes: Woodleigh, a 1914 villa, a 1900 homestead, and The Haigh House, builtin 1942 and moved from Remuera; several country homes each with a original and different per-sonality; two colonial homes, The Pines, built in the 1880s, and Batley House, built in stages from

1865, and beautifully-landscaped Bushy Park offering an easy ramble through established nativebush and around the lake.

Pam says the PTCA has organised the tour to raise funds for Otamatea High School and itsstudents.

During the day, light snacks and tea will be served at two homes and a coffee cart will be at one ofthe properties.

Floral Art will be displayed at four of the homes.

The houses will open at 9.30am and the last entry is at 3.50pm. Unfortunately there will be nodisabled access or entry for children under 14.

Tickets, which cost $40 are available from National Bank(Walton Street Branch), WhangareiWaipu Hammer Hardware (Waipu), Buy the Way (Kaiwaka), Otamatea High School(Maungaturoto), Paparoa Drapery (Paparoa), First National Roper Jones (Dargaville), MainStreet Interiors (Dargaville), Wellsford Sports and Leisure Centre (Wellsford).

There will be no sales on 20thNovember.

    CHRISTMAS PARADE UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!

    December 4TH6PM

Well its only a month till the Christmas parade and community

concert and organising is in full swing!!!!

I already have a few floats entered but I need HEAPS more, I

also need stalls, marshals and helpers, if you fit any of these

    please give me a call.

As I briefly mentioned last matters this year the festivities will

not be at the country club (although the floats will finish there)

but there will be a community concert at the High school.

This event needs schools, music groups and in general talentedpeople to perform; this part is being co-ordinated by the High

School. For this event to work we need ALL the community to

get behind it, Maungie has a reputation for being a bit apathetic

so lets get off our butts and make this a concert to remember!!!!

Give me or the high school a call if you are interested.

I am also putting a challenge to Maungaturoto to make this

town really look like its Christmas this year, houses, lawns and

shops should be aglow with the festive season!.

COME ON EVERYONE LETS GET INVOLVED, XMAS

IS ABOUT GIVING, HOW ABOUT GIVING THE GIFT

OF TIME AND MAKE THIS YEARS PARADE

    GREAT!!!!!!!!

    p.s

This year there will also be a Santas grotto in town closer to

Christmas, details will be in the next matters.

On Wednesday 20 October 2010, members met at the Commu-

nity Hall with a good turnout of members. There was an excel-

lent variation of competition entries and many different

Unusual Container entries for the decorative section.

Patti Ilsley gave us a most impressive demonstration of her card-

ing and spinning skills. We also admired the intricate and beauti-

ful samples of her knitting 2 shawls and a jacket, all from herspinning efforts.

Next month on 17 November meet at the Ambulance Station at

9.00 am and bring your lunch. We will be traveling by bus to

Whangarei for visits to Whangarei Quarry and Geoff Griggs

Day Lily garden. You will be advised of the final details of

    costs by a committee member.

We are coming into summer and plants need to be well watered

if the weather is dry. Mulching helps to preserve soil mois-

ture. Mulch with bark, compost and grass clippings.

Newly planted shrubs and trees need watering well if soil is dry

    and mulching will benefit them.

Roses will be in bloom and will be at their best this month. Trim

back shoots that have flowered to encourage more flow-

ers. They will benefit from fertilizer at this time as well.

Apply fertilizer to citrus and other fruit trees. Young fruit trees

need to have their first summer pruning. Trim out growth in the

center of the tree. Old trees carrying a heavy crop of fruit will

    benefit from fertilizer.

Plant cucumbers, tomatoes, capsicums and celery. Dwarf and

climbing beans can be planted this month. For a continuous

harvest of beans plant at regular 3 weekly intervals.

A Busy Season at Otamatea Christian

    School.

In the last few weeks we have hosted a cross-country event, a

debating competition and a school pet day.

We were pleased to have children and staff from the Christian

school in Wellsford visit and compete with us in both cross-

country and debating. They won the former and we won the lat-

ter. The weather cooperated and so did helpful volunteers.

School Pet Day was on a Saturday this year and we were thrilled

with the turnout on such a warm sunny day. As with every year,

some volunteers really went the second mile to make the event

very successful and we are grateful for their help.

We are always keen to involve parents and children together in

events that build close relationships, demonstrate character anddisplay the qualities we seek to instill in the children. Perhaps

the best evidence of such worthwhile occasions is when people

are reluctant to go home at the end.

We are currently exploring ways to enhance the distinctive nature

of our school and are planning to purchase more technology to

keep apace of the childrens interests and computer based talents.

We welcome enquiries from parents who would like to explore

the possibility of enrolling their children. We are able offer a free

diagnostic test for the children to identify their personal level of

education as our Schools learning program is tailored to eachindividual child. Please phone our Principal Lynette Bell on 09

    431-8487 for information.

    David Patterson

    Board Chairman

This month I just want to talk about us and what we do.

Now you may say, havent we heard it all before but it seems

no, because people still come in and ask us...What do you people

    do here?

So I will just run through all the things that linking Hands has to

offer to this and our surrounding communities.

    Health Shuttle service

We run a transport service for all people of all ages to all and any

health related appointments; this includes appointments toWINZ, IRD and ACC.

We will pick you up from your home and take you to the hospi-

tal, doctor, clinic, optician, specialist, counsellor, or any other

health related appointment. We will wait for you however long it

takes and then we return you home again.

The service is free and runs by donations from the people that

use us along with funds from various funding organizations and

    Trusts.

We will take you to Whangarei, Wellsford, Warkworth,

    Maungaturoto and Ruawai

The areas that we pick people up from are

Ruawai, Matakohe, Tinopai, Pahi, Paparoa, Taipuha, Whakapi-

rau, Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka, Mangawhai, Waipu, Bream bay,

    Ruakaka.

.We will also bring you home from Hospital if you live in any of

the areas we have covered above.

We have 3 cars and one 8 seater Health Shuttle. Unfortunately

the shuttle is off the road at the moment and will be for a couple

of months, we are doing major overhauls and are presently

waiting on funding to pay for it.

We have 20 volunteer drivers, 5 of which are from the

    Mangawhai area

Volunteer cars are often used when we need to and the drivers

    are reimbursed for their costs.

If you need to transport a larger group we have 2 volunteer cars

that are 7 and 8 seats.

    Office services

Our office is in Maungaturoto, 131 Hurndall St. We have a com-

puter Internet service with 2 computers; we provide colour and

black and white copies, laminating of up to A4 size. Plus a seniornet tutor available by appointment. We have an available office

    space for small meeting.

These services are all run by donations.

The latest addition to our service is our Book Nook.

This is 2nd hand books, DVDs, videos and jig saw puzzle.

These are all donated by the community and sold as an ongoing

    fundraiser for linking Hands.

    Family activity boostFAB

This is a special need outing for families that are in need of some

special time together; sometimes a family just needs to spend

quality time together. This can be due to family crisis, loss offamily member; economic times getting you down and unable to

cope anymore without a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

This we do monthly and a family needs to be referred to us then

we take it from there. So if you have a friend that fits this or per-

haps a neighbor or just someone you know give us a call.

    Ph 09 4318969

We run many other little things for the community some of

which are special requests, things that we do not wish to adver-

tise. We are here to help the needs of the people, and we do help

as much as we can. There are times we must draw the line and

keep to the boundaries but most of the time we manage to cope

with most requests that we get.I would suggest you give us a call if you think we can help and

we will have a look at your request.

Meantime have a great month. Regards Maureen.

    WHITE RIBBON DAY

Today there are many great organisations which have days to

celebrate, days to remember and days on which to buy ribbons,

sometimes I find myself trying to decide which of these worthycharities I can support.

White Ribbon day will be celebrated by the Team of Homebuild-

ers with a free Sausage Sizzle outside the Community House

on Friday 26thNovember, we hope you will come along and get a

free sausage and a White Ribbon in support of those who strug-

    gle with Family Violence.

White Ribbon Day is a good cause that is bringing change and

awareness into our communities around the whole area of Family

Violence. It is also one which you are not asked to donate any-

thing to, but I would encourage you to remember the twentyyoung women who have died at the hands of abusers since

Sophie Elliott was murdered by her partner 2 years ago.

Today as I write this there is a funeral service going on for yet

another young women, Carmen Thomas, who was killed, dis-

membered and buried by her partner. Too many beautiful young

women, too many bright and fabulous children abused and mur-

dered by their partners, and fathers, the very people who should

    be protecting them.

Homebuilders want to acknowledge that there are good men in

our community, we are very grateful to each of you and for all

the good things you do for your families and for those aroundyou in the community. We especially thank those of you who

have supported us with the sausage sizzle, and those who support

us on the Board of Homebuilders

Late last month our new Counselling Rooms were opened and

dedicated in prayer. We are delighted to have this new facility to

    offer the community.

Free Counselling is available if you would like to take advantage

of this service please ring the Denise at the office 431 9080 to

make an appointment. We continue to provide the other services

that you are familiar with such as the Family Support Workerswho visit homes to discuss a variety of family issues which peo-

ple have to face, Food Bank, and the Parents as Child Educators

program for young mothers and babies.

We have started holding Craft classes on Friday mornings from

10am 12pm from now until 10thDecember. The plan is to pro-

vide materials for you to make Christmas presents and Christmas

decorations, anyone is welcome and there is no charge. If youare interested you can just turn up at 10am any Friday or feel free

to ring and find out more about what we are doing.

Thats about it for this month, enjoy the warmer weather and we

will catch up with you again next month.

Blessings from Denise and the Team

    To Die or Survive

Since Sophie Elliot was stabbed to death by Clayton Weatherston

20 other young women have died in incidents of domestic vio-

    lence.

Thousands of others live in fear!

    Reflections

(reprinted with permission from the book Lost & Found by New

    Zealand author Jude Simpson)

I wonder how I used to get through each day, feeling depressed

and miserable beyond words. What had living in this world for

nearly two years done to me? Getting beaten then raped by the

man who was supposed to love me. Cleaning myself up and tend-

ing to my wounds and trying to look happy because hecant

stand seeing that miserable ugly face (within an hour of him

disfiguring it). I had an endless flow of tears running down my

face, but was told to stop snivelling.

I then had to cook the meal and feed the demanding monster. Im

bleeding, bruised and beaten. Im in pain. I find it hard to

breathe. Yet somehow I find the strength deep within my being

to keep going. Was this survival kicking in? Yes, I believe it was.

To disobey his demands would ultimately mean more of the

same. Please, no more! Ill do whatever you want. Ill stop cry-

ing. Ill smile and be happy. Just please, no more!
