    ARARUA PONY CLUB UPDATE

Ararua Pony Club has started its 2010 season with 14 riding

members as well as 15 adult members. This season we have

decided to introduce rides out or treks.

Our first Pony Club trek was on Sunday 7that Mooney farms.

We trekked over the farm to the Kaipara Harbour, swam the

horses , got very wet, then put our mounts in the yard, had lunchon the Mooneys expansive deck and rode back again. There

were no incidents thanks to good riding and sensible horses.

    Well done kids!

Pony club is about every 10 days incorporating Wednesday and

Saturdays. We ride at the NKAA grounds at Paparoa.

Wednesdays rallies start at 5.00pm and Saturdays rallies go

from 10.30am to 2.30pm. However these days could change

depending on the wishes of the members so ring Beth on 09

4316 850 to find out when pony club is on.

We have three senior riders , Jason Ball, Raquelle Gibberd, andHannah Underwood who are out and about representing not only

their pony club but their area in Dressage, eventing and

Show jumping. Hannah also coaches at Pony club rallies.

We have riders planning to sit D, C, C+ and B certificates this

season, as well as Pony Club team events in games and Dressage

    and Show jumping coming up.

Our Christmas rally will be Saturday December 17th. This will

    be a Games Day.

Rt Revd Ross Bay, Anglican Bishop of Auckland,

    Eileen Parsons.

On Sunday November 14th the Bishop of AucklandThe Rt. Revd Ross Bay conducted a special Confirma-

tion Service at Holy Trinity Anglican Church Maun-

gaturoto. The church was packed with friends and

visitors supporting the two confirmation candidates

Karlene Story and Eileen Parsons, who both affirmed

their faith in Christ and committed themselves to His

    service.

The Bishop, on his first visit to the parish since his

election last year, led the congregation in renewing

their baptism vows, before going on to the laying on

of hands for the candidates. In his stirring and chal-

lenging address, spiced with good humour, he encour-

aged all christians to remain faithful to their

convictions and to demonstrate in their lives the

unique qualities that faith in Jesus Christ gives us.

The service was led by theVicar of the Paparoa Parish,

The Revered Rodney Dunlop, who highlighted the

fact that this was the first Confirmation Service held

in Maungaturoto for over 10 years, making it a his-

toric occasion. The songs all sung with 'gusto' were

the choices of Karlene and Eileen, and captured theirown expressions of faith and conviction.

I am not alone at all, I thought. I was never

alone at all. And that, of course, is the

message of Christmas. We are never alone.

Not when the night is darkest, the wind cold-

est, the world seemingly most indifferent. For

this is still the time God chooses.Taylor Caldwell

Trouble getting an appointment when you feel you need one?

We really do care about your health needs.

As you are aware, there is a countrywide shortage of GPs. Many

rural clinics are solely nurse run. We are doing our best to cover

all of our clinics well. We have highly trained practice nurses

who are helping us streamline the process.

If we are fully booked and you feel that you need to be seen on

that particular day, please come in for a nurse assessment. The

nurse will give treatment or advice where he/she can. If you need

to see a doctor, the urgency of your situation will be evaluated

and an appointment will be given to you within an appropriatetime frame. We will accommodate you in Maungaturoto and

Paparoa if we can, but you may need to travel into Wellsford if

appropriate, bearing in mind your ability to travel.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you feel unwell and feel that you

need to be seen urgently. Please inform the nurse or receptionist

that takes your call the urgency of the situation.

We also encourage those of you who have chronic conditions to

book your repeat check-ups well ahead of the time that your

medication is due to run out.

We hope that this message clarifies our system for you.

The Team at Coast to Coast Health Care

St John inspires youth to succeed

One of New Zealands fastest growing youth programmes is in-

spiring youth to succeed, set goals and plan for their future.

The St John youth programme has a membership that exceeds

5,500 and its growing, says St John Northern Region Youth

    Manager Christine Benson.

She believes the growth is due to the significant time and effortvolunteer youth leaders contribute and the way in which St John

responds to trends and needs of youth.

St John Youth programmes are about having fun, discovering

new things and working together. We cater for 6 to 18 year olds

in a co-educational youth programme that provides a safe and

secure environment where young people can learn first aid,

health care, self discipline, leadership and general life skills, she

    says.

St John has adjusted and modified the delivery of its youth pro-

gramme including the release of new resources, the use of mod-

ern technologies and structures that ensure its leadership is intouch with the communities it serves.

We are very proud to announce our newest division will be open-

ing in your area in the new school year 2011. It will be based at

our newly revamped Ambulance Station, with one of the opera-

tional volunteers also becoming our new division leader, Jodie

    Hosford.

We welcome all enquiries and are planning an open afternoon

before the Santa Parade on the 4thDecember. There will be CPR

demostrations with manakins, give aways, colouring competition

and lots of exciting stuff. Here you will be able to ask questions

see more of what we do and and talk to our new leaders. Anyonewelcome. Look for our flyers around town closer to the event.

One of the ethos behind St John Youth is preparing young people

to be successful adults and building self esteem.

Evidence of the programmes success can be seen in the skill and

enjoyment of cadets competing in a drill or first aid competition,

and examples of our young people saving lives in emergency

    situations, Says Ms Benson.

She believes youth development is the responsibility of many

including family/whanau, schools, the wider community and peer

    groups.

St John can play a vital role in youth development, our pro-grammes wont be for everyone but there are many young people

who enjoy and benefit from being part of St John and prosper

from the involvement with their peers in a group environment,

    she says.

You can contact Jodie Hosford on 431 9090.

    Obituary

    Ian Frederick Cullen. Aged 80

A willing and enthusiastic former resident and farrier

of Maungaturoto. Active and respected in many or-

ganisations in the district, served in St John Ambu-

lance for 26 years, he had a big hand in alterations to

the station adding on a garage as well as normal du-

    ties.

After retiring to Whangarei he joined the WhangareiAuxiliary Ambulance Service and was often seen

driving their shuttle vehicle between Whangarei and

    Onerahi Airport.

Being very clever at engineering he became involved

in building support equipment for the Northland Res-

cue Helicopter. He was a volunteer at the Kauri Mu-

seum in Matakohe in the engineer boys team restor-

ing machinery and all sorts of exhibits. He travelled

to Matakohe most Wednesdays, took home work to

do in his well-equipped workshop to turn out unavail-able vital parts on his lathe for various restorations.

He also built a very popular exhibit, a jersey cow,

very lifelike with twitching tail and wagging ears,

which was installed into a replica cowshed.

In earlier years Ian took up flying with the Otamatea

Aero Club and in recent times has been building his

lifes dream a real aeroplane. Unfortunately, in

spite of his determination, life ran out before it was

    quite finished.

He was a real perfectionist in everything he did so

has left his mark in many fields. Other interests

were yachting and in younger days, motor sports,

especially hill-climbing races in which he did very

well coming 4th in the New Zealand hill-climb

    championships one year.

A devoted family man, Ian leaves his wife Lois, two

    daughters and their families.

He will be sorely missed in many quarters but well

    remembered. Well done Ian.

There is already a mannequin model of Ian in the

    Kauri

    Museum, a fitting memorial.

    ~Alan Flower
