Paula comes from Fielding but has lived in Auckland for some years. In this Year of the Veteran and the 90th an- niversary of the forming of the R.S.A. it was wonderful to see such a strong attendance to local Anzac Day Parades. The torrential rain could not keep people away from the Dawn Service at Maunga- turoto and the amount of children and young people present was tremendous. A great turn out by the Students of Otamatea High School. Local boys Stephen and Bryn Seagar along with friend Kane McOnie, all members of the Air Training Corp No.20 Squadron based in Whangarei, not only attended the Maungaturoto Dawn Service, but also the parade at Matakohe, held at the Kauri Mu- seum. Numbers seem to grow every year at the Kauri Museum service, organised by the Paparoa RSA and Museum , this year was no exception and the number of children present was impressive. These children are our future who will remember and continue to honour Anzac Day. The rain held off as the march through the cemetery to the flagpole was undertaken. Children from Matakohoe Primary School and Students from Otamatea High School laid wreaths at the First World War memo- rial. The service was very emotional and the beautiful voice of Maura Flower singing the Vera Lynn song “We’ll Meet Again” brought a tear to many an eye. We have heard in the news recently how certain medals from one of our war heroes may be sold overseas (the families choice). Which makes the gesture from the families of Nederick Rintoul and Harry Mollard do- nating the medals of these men to the Kauri Museum so that they may stay in Otamatea for future generations truly remarkable. The whole area benefits from this magnifi- cent donation. Yes, I know you weren’t supposed to hear from me this month - but the best laid plans of men and mice etc. George will be doing the Matters for the next two months. Until next time, Eve

would love to hear from you! If you have an item you want

mentioned in the “Matters” you can either contact me at the

address below or drop it into the RED BOX in the window at

Tony’s Stationers in Hurndall Street. If it is an advert the

PARKING

As parking is at a premium in our town could we please ask Shop Owners/Offices to park either at the parking area in Gorge Road, in front of St John’s or further back Hurndall Street away from shops. This will enable customers to park in the main street.

Thank you for your co-operation.

You’ve got this month to put pen to paper so we can celebrate the exceptional indi-

viduals and businesses in our town. Yes, the deadline for nominations to be in for

the Maungaturoto Community/Business Awards 2006 is May 31, but in the interests

of not giving the organisers nervous breakdowns, why not get your nominations in

early.

The winners won’t be judged on the quality of your entry - so jot down a few words

about the fabulousness of a retailer, the efficiency of a trade business, the generosity

of a community worker, the gorgeousness of a garden, the service and style of a

hospitality venue and the sheer genius of a local farmer. Entry forms are all over

town.

And when you’ve done that, pop into Garnett’s Electrical and buy tickets for the

flashest night Maungaturoto’s ever seen - the glittering black-tie dinner at the Maun-

gaturoto Community Centre on Saturday, 24 June when the winners will be an-

nounced.

One way women can prepare for this glamorous event is by attending the Girl’s In-

dulgence Evening on Friday, May 12. If this Primary School fundraiser is anything

like the Indulgence Evening held a couple of years back, it’ll be outstanding.

Otamatea High School was the centre of attention in April; it hosted the school’s 30th

reunion where about 400 former students recalled their teen years (Principal Hayden

Hutchings reminded them the bike sheds were out of bounds), and the 31st Tai

Tokerau Festival where students from 24 schools around Northland showed off their

considerable kapa haka skills.

Get your nomination in for the Maungaturoto Community/Business Awards 2006 and

you’ll be in to win a grand prize. Have a great month. Rae Roadley

THE ROTARY CLUB OF MAUNGATUROTO & DISTRICTS INCORPORATED

This year began with a barbecue at the home of President Jim Taylor. At a later date we had a great fun evening with the locals at the Mangawhai Bowling Club. In February Rosalind Miller, theatre nurse in the mobile theatre that covers the whole country every five weeks, gave us a real insight in the operation of this marvellous aid to rural health. The theatre provides up to 20 operations in one day at small rural locations. 1500 operations were performed last year. The theatre is an incredible machine with full computer link-ups to University and hospital expertise around the world. This huge machine which is very ingeniously designed and built often has to negotiate narrow and winding roads, with the help of highly sophisticated steering aids. Oncoming traffic have, on many occasions have to reverse long distances when the theatre appears. Rosalind paid tribute to the skills of the driver in getting from A to B. We need several of these innovative theatres. Coast to Coast professionals, Nancy and Doctor Malloy gave us some ideas on how to prepare for any influenza pan-demic and what to do should the pandemic arrive, stay at home. The Rotary Auction held 11 March was very successful which was heartening after the rather poor result last year. The total raised on the day was $4,734 and our thanks go to our longstanding auctioneers, Jim Dry and Andy Martin. Ian Niblock, Northland’s Chief Harbourmaster of 17 harbours gave us an excellent insight into the problems associ-ated with Northland’s harbours. The unique nature of “long wave” events clearly showed the hazards of large ships entering Whangarei Harbour. This past week we have hosted the Group Study Exchange team from Tennessee/Virginia. The team was made up of three women and two men, covering a wide variety of occupations. They gave us and excellent presentation of their lives at home is the US of A. The club showed the visitors what life was like in a rural area. Visits were made to the Matakohe Museum, the Maungaturoto Dairy Factory, and the Otamatea High School hosting the Maori Festival. There was a walk amongst Avocados, catching fish in Bream Bay and watching how farmers control large numbers of sheep with their dogs.

News from Maungaturoto Playcentre

Maungaturoto Playcentre is a busy hive of activity for the 50 or so families in and around the Maungaturoto district who use it. I know that sounds like a lot, and it is, with three mornings a week fully enrolled with pre-school children. Our Monday session is an extended one, intended to help prepare children for school and introduce them to organised activities and a bit more structure. Helen van Beek is the supervisor and she travels from Waipu to take this for us. It is a very busy and full session so if you are interested in having a child enrol, please contact us at the centre (ph.431-8494) as there is a waiting list. Wednesday is an afternoon session, running from 12 to 2.30pm and works in well for those parents who also have school children. The Friday session starts at 9am and runs until 11.30am. We would like to say thank-you to all those families who come along and support the centre which is the ONLY early childhood education facility in Maungaturoto. It is a parent co-operative recognising that parents are experts when it comes to looking after children. We are holding a fundraising mystery auction soon but the date has been changed so please keep an eye out on the town notice boards. Lots of wonderful prizes have been donated, both big and small, so it’s bound to be a lot of fun on the night.

MAUNGATUROTO REST HOME

LOSES LONG TIME RESIDENT EDNA MOONEY

Mrs. Edna Mooney passed away at the Maungaturoto Rest Home on April 5th having been a

resident at the home for nearly 11 years.

Edna was in her 103rd year having been born in London on the 21st December 1903.

At the tender age of 6 months she came from London to Devonport in Auckland with her

family.

Edna came to the area to work as a cook in a boarding house at Paprika and loved to swim

the river to a farm which was to become her home for more than 40 years when she married

Nelson Mooney at Huarau.

Later in life when Edna and Nelson moved to Whakapirau, Edna could still be seen swim-

ming and doing hand stands in the water in her late 80’s.

She was a whiz at crosswords until her eye- sight deteriorated when she was well over 100

years of age. Edna will always be remembered for her great love of sports. She loved

cricket and rugby league and on her 100th birthday received a signed card from the Warriors

Rugby League Team.

Edna has three children, Ted, Rae & Jennifer, 8 grand children and 6 great grand children.

All the staff from the Rest Home, both past and present regarded it a privilege and a pleas-

ure to have known Edna. She will sadly missed by all and always remembered.

Family celebrate nearly 140 years of settlement

Around 80 descendants of Lionel and Jane De Labrosse spent Easter Mon-day having a picnic lunch at “ Tokatapu” on the upper reaches of the Te Pahi river on Ted Mooney’s property. Lionel, a French Count from the Cha-teau de Varennes with his Irish wife Jane along with two very small chil-dren took up 40 acres each (land that was offered to settlers at that time) and built a substantial house and lived for 8 years at Tokatapu. Four more children were born while at Tokatapu. They also built a church on the river so other settlers could come by boat. It has been recorded that when Count de Labrosse arrived he came with 12 silver teaspoons from the Chateau and one thousand pounds. When Captain Colbeck arrived on the Kaipara on his land buying spree, they sold and moved closer to Pahi and built another house “Cloon Eavin” where Mary and Owen Stevens live to-day. Terry Hanna, Great Grandson of de Labrosse organized a church service at St Albans Church Whakapirau at 10.00am before driving to Tokatapu. Boats and barges arrived to take descendants down the river to “Cloon Eavin” and also to view the old Hanna property “Bassenfell” up river from Whakapirau. On return to Tokatapu a picnic took place on the point where close by once stood the de Labrosse house. All that is left of the homestead today are the old trees including holly bushes, planted by some of the districts brave pio-neers of the late 1860’s. It is unfortunate that both of the sons died and the name de Labrosse was lost. However two of the daughters married lo-cal farmers, one being Douglas Snelling and the other George Linnell. Descendants from these families were present at the re- union.

Many thanks to Bet Nelly of the Kauri Museum for her report on this event

We took our Good old day’s group out for a nice little treat last month to the growing metropolis of Mangawhai. What a lot of changes they saw; most of our group had not been there for many years and enjoyed the little tiki tour we had around the town before stopping for lunch at the garden center.

The food bank has been going well lately with donations from our local church harvest festi-vals, Well done and thank you to the community for these wonderful donations of food and vegs for the families in need.

Good old days is the first Wednesday of every month,

Next one is May 3rd

Our Community Health Plan has changed to once a month; it is now on the last Thursday of the month Next one is May 25th at 3pm.

This month we have Maggie from the Arthritis society

A gentle reminder that we are here if you are in need of help or support to get you through the bad times. We are non judgmental and try to help by support and encouragement, some-times we can also do more practical things that may get you over that problem. Please do not hesitate to ask if you need help or know of someone else that may need a helping hand. The community house is also a pop in center and we encourage you to do so, even if we are always having meetings as some of our people tell us. So have a good May everyone and take care. With the forthcoming opening of the Boarding House at the Kauri Museum—this makes interesting reading. Ed

Excerpt from the New Zealand Herald August 27, 1887

MAUNGATUROTO

We in Maungaturoto are enjoying a treat in election matters. The various candidates for the Mars-den and Rodney districts are paying us a visit; and, from the interest of young men here are taking in the forthcoming election, I should not be surprised at some future date to see a Premier or Min-ister of public Works arise out of our midst. Mr Dargaville paid us a visit, and , in a lengthy speech, pointed out the loss the district had sustained through not returning him instead of Captain Col-beck, but that when returned for an Auckland constituency he had repaid good for evil by urging on the Ministry to place the first grant on the estimates for the North Auckland Railway. He also blamed us for the want of energy we had displayed in railway matters. He promised to urge the extension of the line, and opened out to our vision a glorious view of the future. Well, we want some cheering news in these parts just now, for the present is dull enough.

To meet the increased demands made by travellers, Mr Davies had now one of the most commodi-ous and well-built accommodation house to be found north of Auckland; it comprises 19 rooms, and is a credit to the builder, Mr Billings. The premises have a large public hall attached, capable of seating 300 persons.

The road about here are still in a very bad state, the portions under the control of Otamatea County Council being impassable, and quite unsafe even in daylight. [A Correspondent]

Business House is drawing to a close and there have been some big battles all the way through! Some have been between rising stars and old-hands finding form such as the great match between Gabriella and Terri,

and others have been David and Goliath battles, such as that between Andrew Swadling and Mike Schimanski.

Kenny has done a great job of organising Business House and we hope that some of the new players

feel inspired to stay on and join the Squash Club for the season.

Our Tournament is fast approaching and committee members are working hard to find sponsors and

co-ordinate the event. If anyone can offer any help please see Mike S, Karla, Tracey or Heather.

Tournaments: Mid-Western is the 12th—14th May, Maungaturoto 19—21st May.

For more info call Mike Schimanski, Heather Lupton or Kenny Finlayson

April meeting on the 19th was held at

Anne Hayden’s home which is situated

close to an arm of the Kaipara

Harbour.

Just a small number of members were

present but we all enjoyed looking at

all the hard work Anne had done in

her difficult area.

This is very exposed to the elements of

wind and salt spray with a steep bank

on one side of the house and a drop

down to the estuary on the other.

A few hardy souls walked to the top of

the hill to see a magnificent view of

the Harbor in both directions.

Next meeting 17th May, a trip to a

Protea garden at Te Hana.

Meet at 10.15am - parking area.

MAROHEMO HALL NEWS: May 2006

Hi, by the time you read this we should have held our AGM and hopefully filled all committee positions for another year.

Thanks to all our committee members, your contribution is appreciated in keeping our hall

in great shape.

It was great to hear the hall walls reverber-

ating to the sounds of young voices as the

Primary School held an end –of-term disco. A

good turnout of kids gyrated and did gravity

defying moves that had even the younger

parents in awe. This is a great

venue for kids parties so next

time they want to rock and you

don’t want to roll at home,

then call the Marohemo Hall

G O Gymnastics Otamatea Gymnastics Otamatea has enjoyed it’s first term of 2006 immensely. We meet every Tuesday at the Sports Complex Kaiwaka and at present from term two, cater for pre-schoolers through to gymnasts in their teens. Through the hard work of a team of volunteers we now have a gym full of equipment for the gymnasts to enjoy. Our latest toy is a wall-climbing unit with ropes. Special thanks to Andrew Swadling, Mark Ottaway and Greg Jaques for assembling this. Over the Winter terms, the senior gymnasts will be preparing for competitions and the Gym Fun kids will be doing what they do best – having fun, along with working toward Gym Fun badges. Our end of term prize-giving saw 22 gymnasts receiving Gym Fun Badges. In term two Gymnastics Otamatea is geared up to start pre-school gym. This is designed for parents to work along-side their pre-schoolers, under the supervision of a team of enthusiastic mothers who have spent time gaining the necessary qualification.. Studies have shown that movement education activities can equip children with longer attention spans, increased commu-nication skills, general problem solving skills and im-proved self-esteem. All this while playing with their par-ents or caregiver and having fun. Pre-school Gym will be held on Tuesdays from 3.15 - 4pm for 0 - 6 year olds and their parents or care-givers. For enquiries about Pre-school Gym, please contact Deidre Lennox on 4315146 For other gym inquiries, please phone Paula Jaques on 4312446.

FARM LIVING

The Curious Sex Appeal of Helicopters

There are many merits to having a wedding in the countryside. There’s heaps of

parking, no neighbours to complain about the noise and, perhaps best of all, rich rel-

lies can fly in by chopper.

It had never crossed my mind that helicopters were sexy until this big, dark blue

roaring mother of a machine thundered across the bay on the day our place was a

wedding venue. It landed in the top end of the paddock next to the house, which

was the designated car park.

The wedding was scheduled to take place in about forty minutes and we were in that

odd frantic space when time compresses just before parties begin. Helicopter pas-

sengers who planned to travel onwards by car needed to stow overnight bags, drinks

were sought but the bar was still being set up, others had to be directed to the loo

and the chef misplaced his pastry brush. Mine didn’t suffice. All but half a dozen

bristles had been eaten by a mouse who now shares his home in the utensils drawer

with a mouse trap.

The bride, her dad - a friend from along the road, and the bridesmaid also arrived by

chopper, a more modest creature that circled over the assembled crowd at the point

and landed on the beach a couple of hundred yards away. The trio then walked

along what’s become known as the “longest aisle in the world”.

Over the years, a number of helicopters have landed here and their arrival has al-

ways been a thrill. We raced down to the point one day and met a Department of

Conservation team that had landed in a chopper. They were investigating the death

of a several dolphins in the Kaipara Harbour.

Another day a helicopter pilot arrived at the door. He’d parked his machine on a

nearby hill after a warning light came on. We erected an electric fence around it so

curious bulls wouldn’t wreck it and engineers were summonsed. They arrived by

road a couple of hours later, the chopper made the small jump to the aforemen-

tioned paddock by the house and repairs were made.

And when the campaign to rid the Kaipara Harbour of the southern saltmarsh mos-

quito was in full swing, helicopters regularly landed here to monitor traps they’d set

around the farm.

But none have come close to the thrilling machine that off-loaded eight snappily-

dressed wedding guests a few weeks ago. It came back that night and sat in the

paddock until its few passengers boarded. Then its lights flicked on and its rotors

whirred faster and faster until the motor was screaming. As it flew low over the

wedding party one woman waved madly at the passengers, one of whom was pre-

sumably her beloved - although maybe not, and whipped up her dress to reveal

yards of tanned flesh and a tiny black thong. I’m picking she thought it was a sexy

machine, too. Thanks to Rae for her contribution

Maungaturoto Lifestyle Field Day

Maungaturoto Country Club - Saturday, April 22 You know you’re in lifestyle farmer territory when you arrive at a field day and find yourself following a woman wearing shorts, brown socks and bright green plastic slip on garden shoes. After you’ve passed the real estate tents - cleverly sited where everyone walks in - there’s another clue: Forever Native Nursery is selling plants in three categories: Native shelter and privacy trees, Natives suited to coastal and dry sites and Plants suited to septic, grey-water areas and walkways. Visitors could get their diabetes level and blood pressure checked at Coast to Coast PHO - then send the rates upwards a little further by gobbling down a Lions sausage and bread. There were 40-50 exhibitors. Poland Motors rolled up with heaps of mowers, quads and more. ITM had a huge marquee complete with stylish stone pillars at the entrance. Murray Clinch of Innovative Interiors - he’s based in Mangapai and produces fitted shelves and cupboards - just rolled up with his van and a set of shelves. By about 11am he’d talked to about a dozen people, some of whom were other exhibitors, and a number of which were strong business prospects. Like the other exhibitors I talked to, he thought $50 for a site was good value and he was pleased he’d taken part even though numbers were down on last year. He said Mangaturoto’s central north location was a fantastic spot for the field day which had huge potential. That was the verdict of many people, but they also said the day needs to be more aggres-sively promoted in future. I talked to people from as far south as Auckland and as far north as Hikurangi. Jane and Gilbert King from Mrs G’s Pigs in Whaka St were there with their kuni kuni pigs, in-cluding some 10-day old piglets which delighted the children. A larger piggie got taken for walks around the field day. Among her audience were half a dozen alpacas from Mangapai who’d never seen a pig be-fore. They cowered at the back of their pen when she first strolled past. Next time they edged closer and, by the end of the day, they were crowding at the other end of their pen so they could get a good look at this new four-legged creature. A bunch of small boys spent most of their day picking morsels of grass and feeding the alpacas. Martin Albrecht was there promoting www. goodground.com, his new website which offers advice to lifestyle block owners. It also features lifestyle properties for sale and an endear-ing cartoon dog. It’s worth a look. The speakers scheduled for the morning had such a low attendance they flagged the idea. This issue also has to be addressed next year. At about 1.30pm, the wine and cheese tasting - organised by the Country Club - was held in the sports bar. Kaiwaka Cheese offered numerous yummy cheeses for tasting and Melinda from Montana Wines made herself popular by offering wines from the Five Flax and Bound-ary Vineyards - Tuki Tuki Rd Chardonnay, Rapaura Rd Sauv Blanc, Fareham Lane Pinot Blanc and King’s Rd Pinot Noir. Ten properties were auctioned - nine by First National Roper & Jones and one by First Na-tional and Ray White Real Estate. Only one sold at auction, but the agents were pleased with the outcome of the auction which raised the profile of the area and resulted in further negotiations. Thanks to Rae Roadley for the report that I asked her to do, thinking that I wasn’t going to be here. Ed.
