International Women’s Daysociety. Woman canbring about a changenot only in her familybut also in hercommunity andsociety at large.

Remember that tobe born asa woman is a bless-ing. God has be-stowed upon womenstrength and dignity, wisdom and knowl-edge to do great andmighty things. Thetrue essence ofwomanhood and herpositive influenceimpacts generationsto come. In thiscontext, Helen Kellerhad wonderfully said,“When we do the bestwe can, we neverknow what miracle is

wrought in our life,or in the life ofanother.” In order torealize her true self, Iurge every womanfirstly to shed off herlow self-esteem andmediocrity and aspirefor excellence withthe gifts you areblessed with. Youhave all the potentialwith which you canbe at the steer-wheelin every segment ofour society and bringabout a positivechange. This wom-an’s day, let us focuson women contribu-tion in order to makethe world a betterplace with endlessbenefits for everyoneto cherish. Wish youall a very HappyWomen’s Day!

March 8, drawsthe attention of thewhole world on theInternational Wom-en’s Day – a Celebra-tion of Womanhood. On this day, wecelebrate the veryessence of women andtheir commendablecontribution towardssociety. It is the day

to rejoice with womenachievers for theiraccomplishments indiverse fields acrossthe globe. The focusis on propagatingunity and equality tocreate a gender equalworld where womencontinue to faceatrocities and dis-crimination aroundthe world. In spite offacing tremendousamount of pressureand hurdles on thepathway, womenhave broken the glassceiling and emergedvictorious. It isfascinating to notethat women entrepre-neurs all over arestarting businesses atunprecedented rates.Women’s wing of theFederation of IndianChamber of Com-merce and Industry(FICCI) that encour-ages and facilitates

women to showcasetheir talents, skills, experiences andenergies acrosssectors, itself repre-sents over 6800women entrepreneursand professionals. We see a positivetrend not only inentrepreneurship butalso in almost allspheres of life wherewomen are making amark. However, there is still a hugescope for womenempowerment andtheir upliftment.

Eleanor Roosvelthad beautifully saidabout the tremendouspotential that awoman possesses, “Awoman is like a tea

bag - you can’t tellhow strong she isuntil you put her inhot water.” Indeed, women are capable ofachieving greatthings in life becausethey are blessed withunique traits such asintuition, courage, persistence andlistening skills.Women are constant-ly fulfilling multipleroles and haveincredible multi-tasking and network-ing abilities. Theycan connect moreeasily with people andtend to be moreempathetic. Withthese gifts at handand education thathas opened up severalnew avenues forthem, women candefinitely make apositive impact on thesocio-economicatmosphere in the

Managing health in the natural way“Health is wealth” thus goes the (old) saying. In the present

times this saying, however, seems to have lost its meaning at leastfor a large section of urban populace. Leaving those in show bizand sports, rarely do we find people giving due importance to health. The lifestyles in cities have become sedentary and “late to bedand late to rise makes a man wealthy and wise” has replaced theotherwise popular saying. The health to wealth relationship is in-versely proportional in the present scenario where earning wealthif required at the cost of even health, is more prevalent.

The health has taken backseat in today’s life, but this is not theend but beginning of more difficult problems, sometimes evengrave than the dearth of wealth. Obesity and its associated prob-lems of heart diseases and diabetes have multiplied at an alarmingrate. The sheer pace at which these urban diseases are growinghas pressed the panic button in the urbanites. Sooner or later theyare realizing that striking a balance between the desire to earnand requirement of maintaining a good health is mandatory in thelong term. This has led to the need for urban health care centres, more so in environment where people have money to spend andno impulse to take care of health the natural way. Health care cen-tres equipped with physical trainers and loads of imported ma-chines have propped up in every nook and corner of the city luringpeople with catchy advertisements. Their promise to set the thingsright in the shortest possible time is all the more luring, as time isone commodity, which is scarce in the metropolis. Even if this ser-vice is available at an exorbitant cost.

In the days when most of the health care centres are makinghay, many spurious centres have also propped up in the neighbor-hood to have the piece of cake. They are promising wonders atnominal cost without any expert trainers or methodologies. Somehave come up with magic equipments, others with wonder drugsor wonder drinks promising to solve all health related problemswithout any medicine or exercise. Many of such centres are fly-by-night operators who collect fee from large number of peopleand wind up one fine night. Also, there have been incidences wheremore damage has been done, than any good, due to ignorance andill-trained instructors.

Maintaining health the natural way is the best solution. If at all,in an environment with cut- throat competition, it becomes un-avoidable to pay less attention to health as a matter of survival, then choosing a good reputed health care centre is the right solu-tion. Also the government should formulate sound regulations inissuing licences to these centres so that an average citizen doesnot get cheated by the spurious operators.

The new Fitness mantra -dance to your heart’s contentEvery Sunday I

wake up late but thisweek I was ready at 8am as we have somedemonstration of Zum-ba session. Ladies ofour society were wait-ing, all dressed up intheir jogging finery.Music blared and wedanced on the instruc-tion of the instructor.Afterwards everybodywas feeling happy andit struck me that exer-cise has never made meso happy as doing withthis Zumba session.Grooving to the beats ofmusic felt more like adance party than aworkout, which is ex-actly what makes Zum-ba so popular.

The Latin-inspireddance workout is one ofthe most popular groupexercise classes in theworld and I understoodwhy it is so. The high-energy sessions of Zum-ba are set to upbeatmusic and feature cho-reographed dance num-bers and you don’t needto be a great dancer tofeel welcome in a Zum-ba class. With the tagline, “Ditch the Work-out, Join the Party,” theclasses emphasize mov-ing to the music andhaving a good time, norhythm required onlymusic, movement andyou. Working up asweat in the 60-minuteclasses burns an aver-age of 369 calories thatis more than cardiokickboxing or step aer-obics, it melts fat, strengthens your core, and improves flexibili-ty. I have some kneeproblems and thoughmost Zumba involveshigh-impact moves likebouncing and jumping,it can be modified tomeet your needs whichI did by restrictingjumping. I can say thatZumba is one of themost fun and versatilefitness crazes to comealong in a long time. Ifyou just love to moveyour body to the music, then Zumba is for you.But steer clear of high-impact moves if you

have knee or back painor arthritis. If you havediabetes, Zumba is agreat way to loseweight and build mus-cle and you will findthat blood sugars willgo down as your ener-gy level soars. But yesyou should check withyour doctor first to seeif you’ll need to change

your diabetes treatmentplan.

Zumba not only los-es weight but it canhelp lower your risk ofheart disease, reduceyour blood pressure andbad cholesterol, andboost your good choles-terol. Its all about danc-ing your heart out butwhy dance gives us somuch pleasure? Wehave seen cave wallspainted with pictures ofdancers. Even babiesinstinctively jig in timeto music and there is noculture on earth thatdoesn’t possess an urgeto dance. But how is itthat such a simplephysical act has theability to lift the spir-its? The reasons are, dancing stimulates usphysically and emotion-ally while there are alsocognitive and social el-ements related to it.When you dance thebody releases endor-phins, it also connectswith the emotional cen-tres in the brain.

For many people, dancing prompts anemotional release, whilefor some it can makethem cry. It’s cathartic

thing, a letting go ofpent-up emotions.Dancing also improvesspatial awareness, aswell as raising theheart rate and it helpsreduce levels of cortisol-a stress hormone. That’s another reasonwhy it makes you feelhappy and more re-laxed. Dancing is all

about freeing up thebody and allowing it tomove, which is some-thing we tend to do toolittle of these days as weare becoming couch po-tatoes. Modern livingoften leaves us feelingdisconnected from ourbodies, because we

NMMC can improve its ranking provided it follows thesesteps: It should conduct surveys in colleges for volun-teers to come forward to spread awareness related tosorting off of garbage like biodegradable & non-biode-gradable to prevent communicable diseases which isspreading due to unhealthy surroundings. There shouldbe a proper water supply, sanitation facilities & wastebin at every minimal distance. Besides, it should be made

mandatory to use dustbins to segregate recyclable waste from the non-recyclable one. NMMC should also ensure that they are emptied timely. Objective of cleanliness is not just to clean, but to feel happiness livingwithin that environment. NMMC should create an App where citizenscan rate the cleanliness of the city and can give suggestions.

Saurabh Kahadane, Kharghar

NAVI MUMBAIKARS SPEAK NMMC’s chances of improving its National cleanliness ranking?

The best way for Navi Mumbai to improve its rankingin Swacch survey is by actually making all the places inthe city clean. The only thing which I personally do notlike about the satellite city is that the NMMC gives at-tention to only those places which are meant for upperclass people. I would suggest that they should also visitthe poor belt area in the city and should see that what isthe situation pertaining to cleanliness in those areas

and strictly give attention to it. Our ranking will definitely improve if theNMMC administration works with dedication.

Sherin Mathew, Marketing Professional, Kamothe

In previous year 2019 Navi Mumbai ranked 9th as clean-est city as against 8th rank in the 2018 and it was ranked3rd in 2014-15. So rather than improving as cleanestcity in India, Navi Mumbai’s ranking is going down yearon year. In spite of planned city handed over by CIDCOto NMMC, they miserably failed to make city clean andgreen. From outside it may be seen as wonderful citybut situation of villages, which are vintage property ofthis planned city, becomes worst day by day and NMMC has no plan toimprove this situation. So considering this aspect, I may not be surprisedto find this year NMMC might not be in top 10 cleanest city’s list.

Archana Nikhil Mhatre, Ghansoli

Does clean Navi Mumbai also includes our villages? Idon’t think so. Under the Clean City Mission NMMCadministration should focus not only on the planned ar-eas, but also in the villages of Navi Mumbai. Our villag-es are also part of this city. In fact cities have been madefrom our villages. So Instead of making fake claims re-garding the development in sanitation and service lev-els, Municipal administration needs to coordinate with

the people under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and try to ensure maxi-mum participation of the people towards cleaning the surrounding area.Navi Mumbai can achieve Number One ranking provided it includes ourvillages too under this campaign and they should take suggestions fromcitizens and work on mutual action plan involving local people, women’ssavings groups and NGOs.

Dinesh Mhatre, Turbhe

Cleanliness is always in the hands of people. NMMCshould try to reach out to people not only in city area butalso in villages and give them proper guidance of clean-liness. Most of the uneducated people don’t know aboutbifurcation of wet and dry waste. If NMMC gives properguidance to them it will help cleaning our environmentand it will also help to improve NMMC’s National clean-liness ranking.

Prasanna Patil, Gothivali

The Navi Mumbai can improve its ranking in Swachhsurvey by starting many initiatives like involving allthe citizens in its motto of having a clean and green city.It is good to see that Navi Mumbai always comes in thetop ranking with regards to cleanliness but if it comesin the first three rank than it will be really a greatachievement for the satellite city.

life - is to take timeeach day to focus on thesimple things thatbring you joy and danc-ing is one of them.

Here I want to nar-rate the inspiring sto-ry of Sudha Chandran, the only child of herparents. As she grewup, dancing and cultur-al arts attracted her so,her father chose to en-rol her for a dancingschool and she begandancing at the age of 3and gave her first stageperformance at the ageof 8. Only four monthsbefore her 16th birth-day celebration, shemet with an accidentwhile traveling in a busin Tamil Nadu whereshe fractured her rightleg along with a fewcuts. Because of thesudden rush of criticalpatients at that time, ateam of medical internsattended to her but they

failed to see the cuts onher right lower leg. They simply wrappedher leg with POP plas-ter and eventually it ledto gangrene and thespecialists were leftwith no choice but tocut off her right leg 7.5inches below the kneeto avoid the spread ofinfection. Sudha wasdevastated and it shat-tered her hopes of mak-ing a name in the danc-ing world. There wasnothing she could doand she was filled withdepression, anger, frus-tration. But she did notquit. Her passion fordance made her walkagain with the help ofan artificial limb calledthe Jaipur Foot orJaipur Leg. It took herfour months to walkstraight with them. Af-ter learning to walkwell with the artificiallimb, she began prac-

ticing dance. It was dif-ficult. She had to learnevery step again. Therewere times when herleg would bleed, but shecontinued. And shegave a stellar perfor-mance, her first afterthe accident, to get astanding ovation. Thatone performancechanged her life andshe received immenseappreciation from Indi-an and internationalmedia.

Today she is a bigname as dancer andactress .This shows thepower of dance whichgives happiness andcourage and that’s whyin todays globalisedworld dance form exer-cises are much popular.Happy dancing readers.
