The equipment is fantastic and the kids are already using it heavily. While putting a boat in at the ramp this summer just after it was installed, I saw four familiesworth of kids having a great time on the equipment as the parents but their boats on trailers and got ready for the trip home. I can see parents having a hard time getting the kids off the equipment and into the car for the trip home next summer- which I think is a great problem to have. I have also heard a few reports of people from Dryden driving out to the park so the kids can play on the equipment, a testament to how great the playground is. There are times as Council that we can lose sight of the fact that we represent all the residents of the Munici- pality. While it tends to be our retired population that has the time and interest in municipal politics, as well as some keen adults, we also must remember we are bound to consider the interests of the kids and youth that live here, as well as their families. Forget about their needs, and we jeopardize the health of our future as a community. Parks and playgrounds are one way that we can collectively say we care about the health and happiness of our young people. They are important too. These are important things to keep in mind while we wrestle with more adult issues like potholes, roads, grant applications and budgets. So again, from my role as Mayor and as a father, thank you all the staff, Lions Club Volunteers and Jolie for all the hard work. Its appreciated. In other news, we have started to seriously look at what to do with the Vermilion Bay Airport property. Council took a look at the property this last month to look at how it could be developed. We looked at the standing wood, soil conditions, availably of hydro and water. Council is just starting to consider options there, including keeping the runways functioning. This is really just a look at how we might proceed in the next five to ten years in regards to the airport. In the end, we are going to look at getting municipal water to the property. We want to know if we can get water there and ballpark figures how much it would cost. This would impact how the property would be developed in the future. Ill keep you posted on this. Finally, a little on one of Doug Griffiths “13 Ways to Kill Your Community”. He says that not cooperating within the community is a great way to sabotage your way forward. This can be done by ignoring groups and talented individuals, actively conflicting with others and spreading rumours that do little to help your community thrive. The people in small communities like ours must work together if we are to build a place worth living in. There is enough pressure on us from the rest of the outside world that we dont need to add to our problems by being petty and refusing to work with others for a common goal. The park at Eagle River Post Park is a perfect exam- ple of what can be done when people work together. Let s make that a community habit. Thats all for now. Stay safe, enjoy some cool air and the coloured leaves with family and friends this fall and stay safe while enjoying the best place in the world to live. Sincerely, Drew Myers Your Mayor

Mayor’s Message

The month of thanksgiving has begun and with it we lose some of our summer residents, but we start enjoying open hunting seasons, putting gardens to bed for the season, getting the hockey gear back out and a host of other fall activities. I hope everyone has had a great fall so far.

First, I’d like to thank the Vermilion Bay Lions Club members and Jolie Kujansuu for all the hard work in getting the play equipment purchased and installed at the Eagle River Post Park. The equipment is fantastic and the kids are already using it heavily. While putting a boat in at the ramp this summer just after it was installed, I saw four families’ worth of kids having a great time on the equipment as the parents but their boats on trailers and got ready for the trip home. I can see parents having a hard time getting the kids off the equipment and into the car for the trip home next summer- which I think is a great problem to have. I have also heard a few reports of people from Dryden driving out to the park so the kids can play on the equipment, a testament to how great the playground is.

There are times as Council that we can lose sight of the fact that we represent all the residents of the Munici-pality.

It’s appreciated.

I’ll keep you posted on this.

There is enough pressure on us from the rest of the outside world that we don’t need to add to our problems by being petty and refusing to work with others for a common goal. The park at Eagle River Post Park is a perfect exam-ple of what can be done when people work together. Let’s make that a community habit.

That’s all for now. Stay safe, enjoy some cool air and the coloured leaves with family and friends this fall and stay safe while enjoying the best place in the world to live.

EVERY SECOND COUNTS! PLAN 2 WAYS OUT!

Practice your home fire escape plan during Fire Prevention Week

The Machin Fire Department is urging families to practice their home fire escape plan as part of Fire Pre-

vention Week. This year’s theme of Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 8-14, 2017, is “Every

Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”

Fire and smoke move faster than you. There’s no time to figure out how to escape your home AFTER a

fire starts. Practice an escape plan BEFORE there’s a fire so you can get out safely.

In a fire, you may have just seconds to safely escape your home. Be prepared in advance with these

simple steps for home fire escape planning:

Assess the needs of everyone in your home Identify anyone who requires assistance to get

out of the home safely, such as small children or older adults.

Make sure that you have working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside

all sleeping areas Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm.

Identify all possible exits (doors and windows) and make sure they work Know two ways

out of all areas, if possible.

Everyone must know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds Assign someone to help

those who need assistance. Identify a safe meeting place outside. Call the fire department from outside

the home – from a neighbour’s home or a cell phone.

Practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year Have everyone participate. Make

changes to your plan if necessary.

This summer was a busy one for the Lion’s members in Vermilion Bay. July 1, we served 184 people at the Canada 150 Celebration fish fry at the Lions Hall. Also in July, we partnered with the Happy Go Lucky Seniors and held the annual pon-toon boat ride on Eagle Lake followed by a barbeque at the Centennial Pavilion. August 28 was the starting date for the building of the Centennial Legacy Project with completion on Sept 1st. The Lions Club fund raised all last winter to purchase the playground equipment along with monitory donations from local groups, businesses and individuals. The estimated cost to date is around $60,000. The playground is situated in the Machin Park on Eagle Lake known as “The Post”. It was historically a Hudson’s Bay Post at one time. 250 manhours went into the building and all mem-bers and many local volunteers helped out. On Sept 3, we held a grand opening serving hot dogs

and hamburg-ers to approxi-mately 130 people. Below is the picture of the equipment and Vermilion Bay Lions mem-bers.

FLU SEASON

Watch for upcoming notices in the community for flu

shot clinics.

Reminder to patients of Machin Medical Clinic/Points

North Family Health Team to let us know if you re-

ceive your flu shot elsewhere.

This summer, the residents of Machin were challenged to bike across Canada. So far we have received 860km in submissions. That is equivalent to biking from Kenora, through Dryden, to Fort Frances, through Thunder

Bay and Nipigon to Rossport. That was biked by only 7 people! If you did any bike riding this summer (July – September) and have not yet submitted it, you still can! Please submit your mileage to the Machin Municipal Office or to Lindsay at the Northwestern Health Unit @ [email protected]. How far did Machin bike this summer? Kenora to Wawa? Sault Ste. Marie? Sudbury?

Prize winners will be announced at the end of October.
