COUNCIL NEWS:

November is a time that we pause to honour, thank and remember our fallen men and women for the sacrifices they have given for the freedoms we share. Please join us at the Vermilion Bay Cenotaph on November 11th at 11:00 a.m. to pause in remembrance. Lest We Forget.

Mayor Gord Griffiths and Councillor Dennis Peterson attended the Annual Zone 1 Association of Police Services Board (APSB) meetings in Thunder Bay October 8 - 10 along with other Municipal and Provincial Police representatives. Zone 1 is the largest zone in Ontario. Some of the presentations and discussions included:

Guns and Gangs: How gangs are no longer showing their colours and are organized in such ways as to appear part of the general public, they will move into a house and have dealers working their trade from different rooms. The instructors also talked about how large amounts of illegal cash is moved through airports and how the police know about it but because of current laws their hands are tied.

Body Worn Cameras and Drones: Body cameras will eventually be part of standard policing equipment. Through testing it has already proven that it will save time and money for police services. Drones are already in use by the police for investigating traffic accidents and for search and rescue saving time and money.

On Wednesday October 16th, our Mayor had the oppor-tunity to have a one-on-one meeting with Ontario Prem-ier Doug Ford in Kenora and discuss relevant issues in our community. Mayor Griffiths felt the discussions were very positive. Council participated in the Grand Opening of Atlantic Industries Limited in Kenora on October 17th. It was a good chance to meet their representatives that will be dealing with our Public Works Department when placing orders. Council and Municipal Staff have heard positive feed-back on the new LED lights that have been installed in the Woodland Arena and Eagle River Recreation Centre.

These new brighter lights should enhance activities at both facilities while providing savings to the Munici-pality in reduced hydro costs. In 2019, the Municipali-ty has started to analyze hydro costs at the Woodland Arena, reviewing data from 2016 to present. We hope this data will help us target hydro savings at the facili-ty. Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, November 1 – 7

What is CO

CO is known as the silent killer because it is an invisible, tasteless and odourless gas that can be deadly.

CO is produced when fuels such as propane, gasoline, natural gas, heating oil or wood do not burn completely in fuel-burning appliances and devices such as furnaces, gas or wood fireplaces, hot water heaters, stoves, barbeques, port-able fuel-burning heaters and generators and vehicles.

Beat the Silent Killer: Prevent CO in Your Home

Have all fuel-burning appliances, chimneys and vents inspected annually by a registered contractor.

Check that the chimney and all intake/exhaust vents for furnaces and fuel-burning appliances are not blocked and are kept free of debris, ice and snow accumulations.

Barbeques should only be used outside, away from all doors, windows, vents and other building openings. Never use barbeques inside garages, even if the garage doors are open.

Portable fuel-burning generators should only be used outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from windows, doors, vents and other building openings.

Ensure all portable fuel-burning heaters are vented properly, according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Never use the stove or oven to heat your home.

Open the flu before using a fireplace for adequate ventilation.

Never run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor inside a garage, even if the garage doors are open. Al-ways remove a vehicle from the garage immediately after starting it.

Working CO alarms must be installed adjacent to each sleeping area of home if you have a fuel-burning appli-ance, a fireplace or an attached garage. For added protection, also install a CO alarm on every storey of the home. In apartment buildings, CO alarms must be installed in the service room as well as adjacent to each sleeping area in the building. Fuel-burning appliances can include furnaces, hot water heaters, gas or wood fireplaces, portable fuel-burning heaters and generators, barbeques, stoves and vehicles.

Know the Symptoms of CO Poisoning

Exposure to CO can cause flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, as well as confusion, drowsiness, loss of consciousness and death.

If your CO alarm sounds, and you or other occupants suffer from symptoms of CO poisoning, get everyone out of the home immediately, then call 9-1-1 from outside.

If your CO alarm sounds, and no one is suffering from symptoms of CO poisoning, check to see if the battery needs replacing, or the alarm has reached its “end-of-life” before calling 9-1-1.

Know the Sound of Your CO Alarm

A CO alarm sounds different than a smoke alarm. Test both alarms monthly and make sure everyone in home knows the difference between the two alarm sounds.

Don’t be confused by the sound of your CO alarm’s low-battery warning. Follow your CO alarm manufacturer’s in-structions so you know the difference between the low-battery warning the “end-of-life” warning, and the alarm alerting you to the presence of CO in your home.

Lillian Berg School has launched a Forest and Nature School on the school property which shares a boundary with Pine Tree Pathways. Some of our younger students at Forest School need visible boundaries, and therefore orange flagging tape has been used to temporarily mark the boundaries. There are also some benches and tarped areas that are used for Forest School and that are located well within the school lot boundaries. If you have any questions about the Forest School program, please contact Vanessa Clarke at Lillian Berg School at 807-227-2152.

Points North FHT is Now Booking Online The Points North Family Health Team/ Machin Medical Clinic are happy to announce that we are trying a new online booking system for a few morning appointments 3 days a week. The Vermilion Bay & Area Kinette club regretfully announce the cancellation of the 2019-2020 Karnival

Queen Contest. Unfortunately, we were not able to procure enough participation to run the contest this

year. This has not occurred in many years. We have had difficulty in attaining young ladies who are able

to participate for a few years now. Our youth are quite busy with school, sports, work and home life.

As a result, we have thought about possibly changing the qualifications of running. At the moment any

young lady between the age of 15 to 18 are able to be a contestant. Our community is lacking in girls of

this demographic. The Kinettes are thinking of possibly changing next year contest. Some of the options

are children age 8-12, past contestants (either princesses or queens), a male contest for a Karnival King,

or a senior contestant. We are seeking input from the community. If you have any ideas are would like

to see any of these changes or would like it o stay the same please email me at [email protected]

with your input. We will gather any information sent and put another message in the Machin Messenger

with the results for next Karnival.

The Kinettes would like to thank all past participants, the community, families and all the organizations

that have participated in the past years.

Thank you,

Lori Miles

President

Kin Korner

The Vermilion Bay Kinsmen and Kinettes were honoured to host Kin Canada's National President

Brian Cooper, and D2's Governor Kevin Carlson at our zone installation of officers put on by our

Deputy Governor Debbie Landry. They were given a grand tour of Machin and were blown away

by all of the ways our town has been served by our community service clubs.

After a quick supper they went to the Bayview for a great night of installation of officers and fel-

lowship.

Deputy governor Debbie was able to wrangle members of 4 out of 5 clubs out on a weeknight! It

was "Coops" largest group of officers installed at on time. One of the highlights of the evening

was hearing Life Member Tony Blair saying that this was the first National President that he had

met, he was reminded that he had met founder Hal. So now Tony has met the first and hun-

dredth Presidents of Kin Canada.

We are celebrating our 100th year of National service on February 20, 2020 which just happens

to be the start of Kin Karnival !
