What a great day! On Friday, March 16th, Preschool students and parents gathered for the Little Lincoln Hawks Sports Day. Five Teams of each grade level competed against each other and everybody received a medal for excellent performance. After the award ceremony, students were looking for refreshment in the pools, rode their bikes and had fun jumping and sliding on the Brinca Brinca. The traditional competition between parents and teachers ended with a 1:0 advantage for parents. Congratulations to all competitors!

On Monday, March 7th , the faculty advisor of NHS, Mr. Noel Sevilla, and the president of the society, Andrés Ochoa, went to the Red Cross to donate food for the people affected by the heavy rain on the Atlantic Coast in December and also for the "Plan Playa", that begins next Saturday. Rice, sugar, beans, oil and corn were delivered. The Red Cross thanked us for the donation from the school, which has been cooperating with the humanitarian institution for a very long time and for different causes.

LIA was one of the four Schools representing Nicaragua in HACIA Democracy 2012, and the most awarded. Nine of our delegates received awards in different categories. We are very proud of these students for all their effort and dedication. We must admit that this was one of the most difficult year in HACIA. The students spent many hours of their time, both day and night, getting prepared for this important event, and we can finally

see the rewards of so much work. The winners were: Best Essay: Ma. Fernanda Castillo Best Delegates (First Place): Camila Delgado, Ana Marcela Morales, Cristel Mendieta, Ma. Sarela Brenes. Best Delegates (Second Place): Raul de la Ossa and Emilia Fernandez. Andres Ochoa and Ma. Patricia Gonzalez received awards for Junior Co-Chairs and their extraordinary leadership and continuous dedication in HACIA Democracy.

LIA thanks ASSA, the School´s Insurance Company, for their kind donation of a fully equipped medicine kit for the Clinic.

¡Que día más alegre! El viernes 16 de marzo los alumnos y padres del Pre-escolar se reunieron para ser parte del Día Deportivo de los Halconcitos. Cinco equipos de cada nivel compitieron y todos los niños se llevaron una medalla por su excelente rendimiento. Después de la ceremonia de premiación, los alumnos se refrescaron en las piscinas, usaron sus bicicletas y se divirtieron en el Brinca Brinca. La tradicional competencia entre padres y maestros terminó 1:0 a favor de los padres de familia. ¡Felicidades a todos los competidores!

El lunes 7 de Marzo el Profesor Noel Sevilla, Consejero de NHS y el Presidente de la misma asociación, Andrés Ochoa, fueron a la Cruz Roja en donde hicieron una donación de alimentos para los damnificados de las lluvias en la Costa Atlántica en el mes de Diciembre y también para el Plan Playa, que empieza el próximo sábado. Se entregó arroz, azúcar, frijoles, aceite y maíz. La Cruz Roja se mostró muy agradecida por la donación del colegio, que desde hace varios años viene colaborando para diversas causas.

LIA fue uno de los cuatro colegios que representó a Nicaragua en HACIA Democracy 2012 y el más premiado. Nueve de nuestros delegados fueron premiados en diferentes categorías. Estamos muy orgullosos de estos alumnos por todo su esfuerzo y dedicación. Debemos admitir que este fue uno de los años más difíciles en HACIA. Los estudiantes invirtieron muchas horas de su tiempo, tanto de día como de noche, preparándose y

y finalmente podemos ver los frutos de tanto trabajo. Los ganadores fueron: Mejor Ensayo: M. Congratulations to the 4th Grader Daniela Saenz, who was the lucky winner of a new cell phone raffled among all students who donated an old cell phone for the recycling program “Save The Beauty”. Congratulations also to Mr. Hugh Cash who won the raffle among the LIA staff members who donated also a broken phone for recycling. A special thanks to Mr. Luis Suarez, Security Guard by the yellow gate, for his support to this campaign. We have collected nearly 100 phones, and will continue collecting broken cell phones the rest of the year. Students will be able to climb the Rock, soon!!

On Tuesday, March 6, representatives of Sustagen visited Preschool and talked to students about the importance of drinking milk every day. All students were measured and weighed in order to use data to compare their growth over years. Representatives are also going to be present during our Little Lincoln Hawks Sports Day on March 16.

On March 8th, LIA had the pleasure to host fourteen colleges and universities from the Catholic Colleges’ Central America Recruitment Tour who provided information to students and parents about their campuses, students life, and the college admissions and financial aid process. Students and parents of other Catholic schools in Nicaragua were also invited to meet with college representatives.

Dr. Daniel Wesley, renowned Existential Psychologist and Professor at the Ave Maria College, came to visited LIA and talked about the important facts and statistics about bullying to the Parents who assited. He also discussed effective methods that help prevent and fight bullying amongst children. One of the most important methods he mentions is “The teaching of empathy to our children."

También felicitamos al Profesor Hugh Cash de P.E. ganador del celular rifado entre los miembros del personal de LIA que donaron también un celular roto. Agradecemos a Don Luis Suarez, Vigilante a cargo del portón amarillo por su apoyo a esta campaña. En total se han recogido cerca de 100 celulares y seguiremos recolectando el resto del año en el ECO Club y el portón amarillo. Los estudiantes podrán divertirse con La Roca, muy pronto.

Feria de Nutrición

El 8 de marzo, LIA tuvo el placer de acoger a catorce universidades del Tour Centroamericano de Reclutamiento para las Universidades Católicas que proporcionan información a los estudiantes y padres acerca de sus campus, vida estudiantil, proceso de admisión y de ayuda financiera. Los estudiantes y padres de otras escuelas católicas de Nicaragua también fueron invitados a reunirse con los representantes de estas universidades.

Universidades Católicas en LIA

Dr. Daniel Wesley, conocido Psicólogo Existencial y Profesor de la universidad de Ave Maria, vino a LIA y dio a conocer a padres datos y estadísticas importantes sobre bullying o acoso escolar. Dr. Wesley también les comentó sobre métodos efectivos que ayudan a prevenir y combatir el acoso escolar entre los niños. Uno de los métodos que destaca es el de “Enseñar empatía a los niños."

El 6 de marzo representantes de Sustagen visitaron a los alumnos del Preescolar de LIA y les hablaron de la importancia de tomar leche todos los días. Todos los alumnos fueron medidos y pesados para comparar los resultados año por año. Los representantes también anunciaron su presencia durante el evento del Día Deportivo de los Halconcitos.

LIA invited the well known psychologist, Dr. Elizabeth Ortega, to give a conference on “How to manage discipline in the classroom”. Elementary and Preschool teachers attended the workshop and learned how to understand the students´ perspective of self control and parents ´perspective on discipline.

Dr. Petronio Delgado, recognized psychiatrist, visited LIA last week to talk to the Middle and High School Teachers about techniques to better handle teenagers. The conference was very dynamic and all teachers participated sharing experiences lived in their classrooms and exteriorizing their concern about the students.

Nutrition Fair–Sustagen visits LIA

March 5th - 6th

Thirteen highly motivated students participated at Boston University Invitational United Nations Conference that took place at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts from February 24th to the 26th . LIA students were able to share their ideas and UN positions with more than 1400 students from the United States, México, and China. This was the first participation of a LIA group to a Model UN conference. After the conference, the group chaperoned by our General Director, Mr. Adolfo Gonzalez, visited Boston College, Harvard and Suffolk University. Mr. Gonzalez also had the opportunity of visiting Framingham State University in Framingham, MA; the school offers a Master in Education from FSU since 2003 to all interested educational professionals in Managua.

We would like to thank all the Parents for their support and Mr. Pablo Porras who helped Mr. Adolfo Gonzalez to prepare the group for this important journey. Mrs. Nora Hernández and Mrs. Karina Molina participated also in a group session in order to prepare the students.

The LIA BosMUN club met ten times prior to the trip to get prepared for their participation.

LIA invitó a la reconocida psicóloga, Dra. Elizabeth Ortega, para dar una conferencia sobre “Como manejar la disciplina en el aula de clases”. Los invitados eran profesores de Preescolar y Primaria, quienes aprendieron a entender la pespectiva de los alumnos sobre el autocontrol y la de los padres acerca de la disciplina.

El Dr. Petronio Delgado, afamado siquiatra, visitó LIA la semana pasada para hablar a los profesores de Escuela Media y Secundaria sobre técnicas para manejar mejor a los adolescentes durante las clases. La conferencia fué muy dinámica y los docentes compartieron experiencias vividas en sus aulas al igual que sus preocupaciones por los alumnos.

Trece estudiantes muy movitvados, participaron en la Conferencia de la Universidad de Boston para la Organizción de las Naciones Unidas que se dió en el Hotel Park Plaza en Boston, Massachusetts del 24 al 26 de Febrero. Los jovenes pudieron compartir sus ideas y posición de parte de ONU con más de 1400 estudiantes de E.U., México y China. Esta fué la primera participación de un grupo de LIA en una Conferencia de la ONU. Después de la Conferencia, el grupo, acompañado del Director General, Adolfo González, visitaron la Universidad de Boston, Harvard y la Universidad de Suffolk. El Sr. Gonzalez también tuvo la oportunidad de visitar la Universidad de Framingham; la cual ofrece una Maestría en Educación impartida en nuestra escuela desde el 2003, a todos los docentes profesionales interesados en Managua.

After celebrating mass on Ash Wednesday, Father Walter visited Preschool to put the cross of ashes on the little ones, and talk about the meaning of this day. The children really enjoyed Father Walter's visit! He also took the time to take a pictures with PK2 students.

In order to create an even more realistic learning experience, the students of the Elective German Class and their teacher Mr. Adolfo Gonzalez, organized a tasty German Food Festival. During this event they enjoyed German Sausages, Sour Kraut and Potato salad.

Many books, shoes, lunch boxes, school supplies and other personal items are waiting to be claimed in the “Lost and Found” area at the Bookstore. At the end of the year, the items remaining will be donated to students of the school “Sagrada Familia”.

Mr. Francisco Pereira and Ms. Szachy García from AMCHAM visited the school to talk to the students about the importance of protecting the environment and how recycling cell phones can help with this task. They also informed how the company CLARO collects cell phones that no longer work and send them to a recycling factory outside Nicaragua as a part of the program "Save the Beautiful" in which for every cell collected, a tree is planted. The whole school can participate in this Program, students and staff can bring their old wireless phones and participate to win a new one!!!

Después de celebrar la misa de Miércoles de Ceniza, el Padre Walter Lacayo visitó Preescolar para poner la cruz de cenizas sobre la frente de nuestros niños y hablarles sobre el significado de este día. Los niños disfrutaron mucho la visita del Padre Walter, quien se tomó el tiempo para fotografiarse con los estudiantes de PK2.

Trae tu viejo celular para Reciclar y participa en la rifa de uno nuevo!

Con el objetivo de crear una experiencia de aprendizaje aún más real, los estudiantes de la Clase de Alemán organizaron junto a su profesor, Adolfo González, un sabroso Festival de Comida Alemana. Los estudiantes pudieron disfrutar de Chorizos Alemanes, Repollo Agrio y Ensalada de Papas.

Muchos libros, loncheras, zapatos, materiales escolares y otros artículos personales están a la espera de ser recuperados en el area de “Objetos perdidos y encontrados” en Librería. Al final de año los objetos que nadie haya reclamado serán donados a estudiantes del Colegio “Sagrada Familia”.

El Lic. Francisco Pereira y la Lic. Szachy García de AMCHAM, visitaron LIA para hablar a los estudiantes sobre la importancia de proteger el medio ambiente y como el reciclaje de teléfonos celulares puede ayudar en esta labor. También explicaron como la compañía CLARO, recolecta celulares que ya no funcionan y los envían a una fábrica de reciclaje fuera del país como parte de la Campaña "Salva lo bonito“, en la cual cada teléfono recolectado representa un árbol plantado. Toda la escuela puede ser parte de esta Campaña también, estudiantes y profesores pueden traer sus viejos celulares y participar en la rifa de uno nuevo!!

LIA first Bullying Prevention

Parade Freedom Cup Opening

On Tuesday, February 14 Preschool students started to get ready for the 1st Bullying Prevention Parade early in the morning. Fifth grade students came to visit them in the Kiosk to talk to them about their experiences they have made during Bullying Prevention Week. After their talk, Preschoolers started their parade around school to let everybody hear their slogan “Buddies Yes! – Bullies NO!.”

With a simple but moving ceremony was opened the XII-FREEDOM CUP. In this event participated teams from 8 different schools with the sports of football, basketball and volleyball. Once again, LIA ratifies its commitment to support, promote and develop the practice of sports among students and strengthen the ties of friendship and collaboration with other schools. Following the opening ceremony, football games were held in the categories, Baby, Premosco and Infant, as well as in basketball and mini volley ball. The XII-FREEDOM CUP, will end next April 19th. GO HAWKS!

Fun Get together for Elementary,

Middle and High School

The past week a pleasant Get together was organized as a form of welcoming new students of Elementary, Middle and High School, and also thank the students who have helped them in their process of adaptation. Directors and children, enjoyed a great time sharing experiences and our delicious pizza.

Students from Interact-La Mascota club and Angeles de Maria club visited La Mascota Hospital and gave patients and their parents more than 35 packages containing articles collected during fundraise activities at LIA and stuffed animals donated by Mrs. Margarita. Thanks to all who donated articles for this activity!

El día martes 14 de Febrero todos los alumnos del Preescolar se prepararon desde muy temprano para su primera marcha de Prevención del Bullying. Alumnos de quinto grado estuvieron de visita en el Preescolar para hablar a los alumnos de las experiencias que tuvieron durante la Semana de Prevención del Bullying. Después de estas charlas todos participaron en la marcha alrededor del Colegio repitiendo su lema “Amigos Si! - Bullies No!.”

Con una sencilla, pero muy emotiva ceremonia se inauguró la XII- FREEDOM CUP. Evento en el cual participan equipos representando 8 diferentes Colegios en los deportes de futbol, baloncesto y voleibol. Una vez más, LIA ratifica su compromiso de apoyar, promover y desarrollar la práctica de los deportes entre sus estudiantes y estrechar los vínculos de amistad y colaboración con otros centros educativos. Después de la ceremonia se realizaron partidos de futbol, en las categorías Baby, Pre mosco e Infantil, así como en baloncesto y mini voleibol. La XII- FREEDOM CUP, concluirá el próximo 19 de Abril. ¡ARRIBA HALCONES!

Charlas informativas 24 de Febrero - Salón de Actos

La semana pasada se organizó un ameno Get together como una forma de dar la bienvenida a los nuevos estudiantes de Primaria, Escuela Media y Secundaria, y a la vez agradecer a los estudiantes que les han ayudado en su proceso de adaptación. Los niños y los Directores disfrutaron de un rato agradable compartiendo experiencias y nuestra deliciosa pizza.

Estudiantes del Club Interact-La Mascota y Angeles de Maria visitaron el Hospital La Mascota y le entregaron a los pacientes y sus padres más de 35 paquetes conteniendo artículos recolectados por medio de actividades con el objetivo de recaudar fondos en LIA. Además se les entregaron peluches donados por Margarita Alaniz. ¡Gracias a todos los que pudieron donar para esta actividad!

On Friday, February 10th, students from the different areas of the school gathered to celebrate LIA´s annual poetry festival to honor Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario. Students presented Dario´s poems in very creative ways; some through songs and dramatizations, others through recitals. It was a celebration for all! We would like to thank the Spanish Department and participating students for the wonderful show.

Los estudiantes presentaron sus poemas de diferentes maneras; cantando, recitando y a través de dramatizaciones. Queremos felicitar a todos los estudiantes y al departamento de español por tan maravilloso acto.

Mr. Bill Scotti, Regional Education Officer from the U.S. Department of State and Kathryn Farley, U.S. Embassy Community Liason Officer, visited LIA on January 19th .Mr. Scotti and Mrs. Farley visited the different school areas and talk to most of U.S. Faculty, and we would like to thank them for taking the time to visit the school.

On January 31st, the 12th Grader, Maria Alejandra Rayo performed at the Theater “Salon de los Cristales” prior to her international presentation at Carnegie Hall in New York, February 13th. The event named “Bell Canto” was sponsored by Claro, Taca, Assa and LIA. She sang more than 15 songs in Italian, English and Spanish, ranging from classical to modern. It was an spectacular presentation. Maria Alejandra is the first Nicaraguan who is going to perform at Carnegie Hall. Congratulations!!! We wish this extraordinary young lady, all the best in New York!

El Sr. Bill Scotti, Funcionario Regional de Educación y Kathryn Farley, Coordinador de la Oficina de Enlace con La Comunidad de la Embajada Americana, visitaron LIA el pasado 19 de Enero. El Sr. Scotti y la Sra. Farley recorrieron las diferentes áreas del Colégio y hablaron con la mayoría del personal norteamericano. LIA agradece su visita.

El 31 de Enero, Maria Alejandra Rayo, que cursa 12o Grado, cantó en el Teatro Rubén Darío “Salón de los Cristales” previo a su presentación internacional en el Carnegie Hall en Nueva York, el próximo 13 de Febrero. El evento, llamado “Bell Canto”, fue patrocinado por Claro, Taca, Assa y LIA. María Alejandra cantó más de 15 canciones, entre clásicas y modernas, en Italiano, Inglés y Español. Fue una presentación espectacular. Rayo es la primera nicaragüense en representarnos en el Carnegie Hall. Felicidades!!! Deseamos lo mejor, en Nueva York y siempre para ésta extraordinaria joven.

Tap Water: Make the switch back to environmentally-friendly tap water

instead of bottled water

At the request of Mr. Porta, director of Fundación Samuel, a non profit organization from Germany, that gives technical education to poor young people, the National Honor Society of LIA, decide to have a fund-raiser to collect money and pay for Christmas baskets of humble teachers who work for Fundación Samuel. The fund-raiser was a success and this photo proves how happy the reachers were, when receiving the baskets from Mr. Porta. NHS is proud of making people happy with its social projects.

The Volcano Hiking Club promoted by our General Director began on Sunday, January 29. The first trip to Mombacho Volcano was a total success. The group hiked to the top of the volcano, cover one of the trails around the crater and came down walking too. In total the group covered around 12 kilometers. Next trip will be on Sunday, February 12. Do not miss it!

Canastas Navideñas para Fundacion Samuel

El Club de Escaladores de Volcanes, promovido por el Director General de LIA, comenzó el Sábado 29 de Enero, siendo su primer reto el Volcán Mombacho que resultó en un éxito rotundo. El grupo escaló hasta la cima del volcán, caminó por uno de los senderos del cráter y bajó caminando por las faldas. El área recorrida suma un aproximado de 12 km. No se pierdan el próximo reto, que será el Domingo 12 de Febrero!!!

A petición de Mr. Porta, director de Fundación Samuel, una organización no lucrativa de Alemania, cuyo propósito es proporcionar educación técnica a jóvenes pobres, la Sociedad Nacional de Honores, decidió organizar una colecta de dinero, para pagar las canastas navideñas de los profesores humildes que trabajan para la Fundación Samuel. La colecta fue un éxito y esta foto prueba qué alegres están los profesores al recibir del señor Porta, sus respectivas canasta. La Sociedad Nacional de Honores se enorgullece de llevar alegría con sus proyectos sociales.

Eco Tip of the Week:

Lincoln International Academy is a school that is truly devoted to the Virgin Mary by celebrating three Purisimas every year. The Administrative and Maintenance Departments celebrated on Monday, December 6th at the Elementary Auditorium. Preschool celebrated the next day at the Kiosk, and later that day there was a general celebration for all grades led by the Class of 2012 at the Assembly Hall. We would like to thank the Lincoln Parents’ Association and the Student Government for all their support.

LIA held its traditional Christmas show and dinner last Thursday, December 16th. This year’s theme was Catholic Christmas Traditions in Nicaragua. The students made a wonderful performance of the ways we celebrate Christmas in different parts of our country. Congratulations to the Christmas Show Committee for an excellent job organizing the event.May the peace, love and joy brought by the birth of Jesus to the world, fill the heart of each one of you and your family this Christmas. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

El Colegio Lincoln es un colegio verdaderamente devoto a la Virgen María al celebrar tres Purísimas cada año. Los Departamentos de Administración y Mantenimiento celebraron la Purísima el lunes 6 de diciembre en el Auditorio de Primaria. Preescolar la celebró el día siguiente en el Kiosco y más tarde se realizó una celebración general para todos los grados dirigida por la Clase del 2012 en el Salón de Actos. Agradecemos a la Asociación de Padres de Familia y al Gobierno Estudiantil por todo su apoyo.

El Colegio Lincoln realizó su tradicional show y cena navideña el pasado jueves 16 de diciembre. Este año el tema fue Tradiciones Católicas de la Navidad en Nicaragua. Los estudiantes hicieron una maravillosa presentación de las maneras en que celebramos la navidad en diferentes partes de nuestro país. On Wednesday, November 23 the School held its traditional Teachers’ Thanksgiving Dinner, this year, with an Arabian Nights theme. It was a fun evening with music, contests and delicious food prepared by the School Cafeteria. One of the winners was Spanish Teacher, Mrs. Luzana Somoza, who won the Best Costume contest.

Congratulations to the LIA Soccer Teams for winning the First Place in the Baby, Pre-Mosco, Mosco and Juvenil categories at Saint Dominic School’s Bulldog Cup. Our Baby Team also won the First Place at Colegio Aleman’s Cup and classified to the Super Cup.

Faculty participates in Scholastic Guided Reading Workshop On November 16-17 our English teachers participated in in the Scholastic Guided Reading Program Workshop presented by Ms. Marjorie Solorzano, from Scholastic International. During the workshop, our teachers learned new ways of putting into practice the guided reading program that was recently acquired by the School.

Thanksgiving Celebration in PreschoolA long time ago, the Pilgrims had a harvest feast with their Native American friends. Today, we have Thanksgiving to celebrate that feast. To commemorate that family tradition, on Wednesday, November 23, preschool students celebrated at the kiosk and gave thanks to God for all the blessings they receive. After their celebration, they shared lunch with teachers and parents in their classrooms.

Novena Prayers to the Immaculate Conception of Mary BeginNovena prayers began on Monday, November 28 at the School. Every classroom prepared beautiful altars to pray the Novena everyday. El miércoles 23 de noviembre el Colegio realizó su tradicional Cena de Acción de Gracias para los Profesores, esta vez con el con el tema de Noches Árabes. Fue una noche alegre, con música, concursos y deliciosa comida preparada por la cafetería. Una de las ganadoras fue la profesora de Español, Luzana Somoza, quien se llevó el Premio al Mejor Disfraz.

Felicidades a los equipos de fútbol de LIA por ganar el primer lugar en las categorías Baby, Pre-Mosco, Mosco y Juvenil en la Copa Bulldog del Colegio San Dominic. Nuestro equipo Baby también ganó el primer lugar en la Copa del Colegio Alemán y clasificó a la Súper Copa.

Docentes participan en Taller de Lectura Guiada de ScholasticLos días 16 y 17 de noviembre nuestros profesores de Inglés participaron en el Taller de Lectura Guiada de Scholastic presentado por Marjorie Solórzano de Scholastic Internacional. Durante el taller los docentes aprendieron nuevas maneras de poner en práctica el programa de lectura que fue adquirido recientemente por el Colegio.

Celebración de Acción de Gracias en PreescolarHace mucho tiempo los peregrinos realizaron un festín con sus amigos los americanos nativos en agradecimiento por una buena cosecha. Hoy en día conmemoramos ese festín durante el Día de Acción de Gracias. El miércoles 23 de noviembre los alumnos de preescolar celebraron en el kiosco y dieron gracias a Dios por todas las bendiciones que han recibido. Después de la celebración compartieron un almuerzo con los profesores y padres de familia en la aulas de clase.

Inicia Novena a la Purísima Concepción de MariaLos rezos de la Novena iniciaron en el Colegio el lunes 28 de noviembre. Cada clase preparó preciosos altares para rezar la Novena todos los días. Agradecemos a los padres de familia por enviar flores y decoraciones para los altares y los invitamos cordialmente a la celebración de la Purísima este miércoles 7 de diciembre.

Feria de Universidades InternacionalesLa Feria de Universidades Internacionales de LIA realizada el viernes 4 de noviembre fue un éxito total. 30 universidades de todo el mundo participaron. También tuvimos la visita de los colegios Notre Dame, San Agustin, St. Dominic, Teresiano, Mi Mundo, Americano y Alemán. Muchos padres de familia también nos acompañaron. Después del evento, los representantes de todas las universidades fueron invitados a un delicioso almuerzo.

All Saints’ Day Celebration Preschool students celebrated All Saints’ Day in a very special way. For this occasion, they dressed as saints and angels. During Religion class they learned about the life and miracles of different saints and they gathered in the kiosk to present their beautiful drawings of their saints. For the All Saints’ Day General

LIAʼs International College FairLIAʼs International College Fair held Friday, November 4 was a total success. 30 colleges from all over the world participated. We also had visits from Notre Dame School, St. Augustine Preparatory School, St. Dominic School, Colegio Teresiano, Colegio Mi Mundo, ANS and Colegio Aleman. Many parents also joined us. After the event, the representatives from all the colleges were invited to a delicious lunch.

Mass they received our Virgin of Fatima at the Assembly Hall singing the song “Quiero ser Santo”.

First Half of Second Quarter Ends

At LIA We Have Friends From 28 Different CountriesLIA recently celebrated Multicultural Week. In preschool, the students celebrated with different activities. Many parents visited their childʼs classroom to present about their home countries. They gave the students exceptional learning experiences by showing them maps and pictures, observing handcrafts and offering typical food tastings. Some students colored the flags of their international classmates and took home their flag booklet at the end of the week.

Students Visit Samuel FoundationThe “LIA-Boston University Model United Nations” group visited the Samuel Foundation to learn how many young people in our country learn how to earn a living. They met students of technical careers in refrigeration, automotive and administration. The students were invited by their former High School Principal, Mr. Roberto Porta, who now is Director of the Foundation. They were accompanied by our General Director, Mr. Adolfo Gonzalez and our Middle and High School Assistant Principal, Mr. Pierre Roberts. The visit reminded our students how privileged they are to receive a good education at LIA, and to have the opportunity to go to the best colleges.

Third National Honor Society Induction Ceremony held at LIAOn Thursday, November 3, LIA held its Third NHS Induction Ceremony. It was a beautiful ceremony were 24 members were honored. All the parents were very proud. Congratulations to the new members and to their Advisor, Mr. Noel Sevilla.

Termina la primera mitad del segundo bimestre

En LIA tenemos amigos de 28 diferentes paísesLIA recientemente celebró la Semana Multiculural. En Preescolar los estudiantes celebraron con diferentes actividades. Muchos padres de familia hicieron presentaciones sobre sus países en las aulas de clase. Ellos le dieron a los niños valiosas experiencias de aprendizaje, mostrando mapas y dibujos, observando manualidades y probando comida típica. Algunos estudiantes colorearon las banderas internacionales de sus compañeros de clases e hicieron un folleto que se llevaron a casa.

Estudiantes visitan la Fundación SamuelEl grupo “LIA-Modelo de las Naciones Unidas de la Universidad de Boston” visitaron la Fundación Samuel para aprender cómo muchos jóvenes en nuestro país aprenden a ganarse la vida. Conocieron estudiantes de carreras técnicas en refrigeración, automotriz y administrativa. Los estudiantes fueron invitados por el Sr. Roberto Porta, quien fue su Director y ahora es Director de la Fundación. Los acompañaron el Director General, Sr. Adolfo González y el Director Asistente de la Escuela Media y Superior, Sr. Pierre Roberts. Esta visita le recordó a los estudiantes lo afortunados que son al recibir una buena educación en LIA y la oportunidad de ir a las mejores universidades.

Workshops on MAP TestsIn September the MAP Tests were successfully administered to grades 4 through 9 at LIA. In order to explain about the importance and advantages of the Tests, the School held a series of workshops for parents and teachers. The workshop for parents—Would You Like to Have an X-ray of Your Childʼs Learning?—was held on October 13. The workshop for teachers—How to Guarantee Your Studentsʼ Success—was presented on October 11 and 18.

Bullying Presentation for ParentsLast Tuesday, October 18, parents from all grades were invited to a presentation about Bullying prepared by the LIA Counseling Department. Parents were explained the concept of Bullying as well as the different types of Bullying and its effects. They were also given advice on what to do if their child is a victim or a bully. Finally, they were presented LIAʼs Anti-Bullying Program for the 2011-2012 school year. We would like to thank the 76 parents who supported us with the campaign by joining us for the presentation. Blessing of New Athletic AreasThe new Athletic Track and the new Multi-sport Court were inaugurated last Wednesday, October 19 with the blessing of our School Chaplain, Father Walter Lacayo. There were also words from our General Director, Mr. Adolfo Gonzalez and from Mr. Horacio Garcia, Lincoln Parentsʼ Association President. The new athletic facilities were built with funds from the School and the LPA. Due to the rain and recommendations by the Ministry of Health, the 2011 LIA Track Meet had to be postponed until further notice.

Talleres sobre exámenes MAPEn el mes de septiembre se aplicaron con éxito los exámenes MAP a los alumnos de cuarto a noveno grado. Para explicar la importancia y ventajas de estos exámenes, el Colegio impartió una serie de talleres para padres de familia y docentes. El 13 de octubre se llevó a cabo el taller para padres “¿Le gustaría tener una radiografía del aprendizaje de su hijo?” Los días 11 y 18 de octubre se realizó el taller para profesores “Cómo garantizar el éxito de sus estudiantes”.

Presentación sobre Bullying para padres de familiaEl pasado martes 18 de octubre, padres de familia de todos los grados fueron invitados a la presentación sobre Bullying preparada por el Departamento de Consejería de LIA. Se le explicó a los padres lo que significa Bullying, así como los tipos de Bullying y sus consecuencias. También se dieron consejos acerca de qué hacer si el estudiante es víctima o bully. Finalmente se les presentó el Programa Anti-Bullying de LIA para el año escolar 2011-2012. Agradecemos a los 76 padres que nos apoyaron con la campaña asistiendo a la presentación. Bendición de nuevas áreas deportivasLa nueva Pista de Atletismo y la nueva Cancha Multiuso fueron inauguradas el pasado miércoles 19 de octubre con la bendición de nuestro Capellán, Padre Walter Lacayo. También dirigieron unas palabras a los estudiantes, nuestro Director General, Sr. Adolfo Gonzalez y el Sr. Horacio Garcia, Presidente de la Asociación de Padres de Familia. Las nuevas áreas fueron construidas con fondos del Colegio y de la APF.Debido a la lluvia y recomendaciones del Ministerio de Salud, se tuvo que posponer el Encuentro de Pista 2011 hasta nuevo aviso.

LIA has purchased Scholastic’s Guided Reading Content

Areas Program in order to tailor the reading program in grades 1st to 6th to the specific needs of each student. This new program enhances students' knowledge in S c i e n c e , S o c i a l Studies, Mathematics, and builds reading skills! It fills the reading sessions with rich content while teachers develop essential vocabulary, build background knowledge, and develop strategic reading skills.

The program is an instructional approach that involves the teacher working with small group of students who demonstrate similar reading behaviors and levels of texts. The guided reading program consists of 260 books organized in 26 levels of difficulty (levels A-Z) in order for students to experience with a variety of texts within a level and advance levels to see their progress.

Preschool Celebrates Father Walter’s Birthday

Representatives of Sustagen talked to the children about the importance of eating breakfast everyday and how essential it is for their body to drink milk every day. Nuevo Programa de Lectura para 1º a 6º grado

Durante la semana, los estudiantes aprendieron acerca de la importancia del ejercicio y

LIA ha comprado el Programa de Lectura Guiada por Contenido

de Scholastic con el fin de adaptar el programa de lectura de 1º a 6º grado a las

necesidades específicas de cada estudiante. Este nuevo programa refuerza el conocimiento de los estudiantes en ciencias, estudios sociales y matemáticas, y además desarrolla habilidades de lectura. Asimismo llena las sesiones de lectura con un contenido más rico mientras los maestros desarrollan vocabulario esencial, conocimiento previo y habilidades estratégicas de lectura. El programa es un enfoque de aprendizaje en el que el maestro trabaja con grupos pequeños de estudiantes con conductas de lectura y niveles de textos similares. El programa consiste en la lectura guiada de 260 libros organizados en 26 niveles de dificultad (niveles A-Z) para que los estudiantes experimenten con una variedad de textos dentro de un mismo nivel y vayan avanzando de nivel para ver su progreso.

Preescolar celebra el cumpleaños del Padre Walter

de una alimentación sana. Todos los días trajeron comida nutritiva, leyeron historias sobre la comida sana y hablaron sobre la pirámide de los alimentos. Representantes de Sustagen explicaron a los niños la importancia de desayunar y lo importante que es para su cuerpo beber leche todos los días. Cada niño recibió el folleto de LIA sobre la salud con importantes consejos sobre la buena nutrición.

Fourth Grade Sharing Day

The 2010-2011 student government, MAC, said farewell to the whole school in a cheerful and original way during the general assembly on Monday, October 3rd. The party entered the Assembly Hall inside a red boat, making noise with whistles and throwing confetti and candy to the sound of music. MAC president, junior Daniel Perezalonso, then mentioned the party’s achievements during the 2010-2011 school year during his farewell speech. Fans for the bathrooms in the PE area, haunted house at the kermesse, Christmas baskets for the school’s maintenance staff and a

printer for the students were some of the achievements.

MAC welcomed the M&M party as the new student government at Lincoln International Academy. Daniel passed the presidential band to the new president, sophomore Cristel Mendieta, who in her speech promised a government that will listen to the students’ needs. Conference on MAP & Curriculum Improvement Studio

On Saturday September 24th, the sixth graders had their annual Sharing Day at the school campus from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Their day was filled with various fun activities that helped them strengthen their bonds of friendship with their classmates, but most importantly, their friendship with Christ.

Leftover Water: If you have plants, whenever possible water them with leftover or

unused water from drinking, cooking, and showering. Keep a water pitcher near the

sink, pila or shower and collect unused water. During rainy season collect rain water!

On September 29th and 30th the high school students participated in a Knowledge Bowl organized by the Spanish Department. The purpose of the activity was to promote study habits and reinforce the learning of the content to be assessed on the first quarter exams.

There were four sessions per day where the students competed by section (10A vs. 10B vs. 10C). Excitement and order were notable during the activity, which took place at the Assembly Hall. The winners were 12B, 11B, 10C and 9C; they had the highest number of correct answers. The activity was a total success; teachers were able to integrate the content of their classes and encouraged learning in the students.

On Thursday October 13th, Lincoln International Academy will be presenting the conference “Would You Like to Have an X-Ray of your Child’s Learning?”. During the conference parents will have the opportunity to learn more about the new MAP Tests and Curriculum Improvement Studio. Do not miss this informative conference presented by Mr. Alejandro Vogel, Development Director.

El Gobierno Estudiantil 2010-2011, MAC, se despidió del colegio de una manera muy alegre y original durante la asamblea general del lunes 3 de octubre. El partido entró

al Salón de Actos dentro de un barco color rojo, haciendo ruido con silbatos y lanzando confeti y caramelos al sonido de la música. A continuación, en su discurso de despedida, el presidente de MAC, Daniel Perezalonso, de undécimo grado, mencionó los logros del partido durante su gobierno. Abanicos en los baños del área de educación física, casa embrujada en la kermesse, canastas navideñas para el personal de mantenimiento del colegio y una impresora para los estudiantes fueron algunos de los logros. MAC dio la bienvenida a M&M como nuevo gobierno estudiantil de Lincoln International Academy. Daniel pasó la banda presidencial a la nueva presidenta, Cristel Mendieta, de décimo grado, quien en su discurso prometió un gobierno que escuchará las necesidades de los estudiantes. Por último, el Director General, Sr. Adolfo González, dirigió la ceremonia se juramentación del nuevo gobierno estudiantil. ¡Felicitaciones y éxitos a M&M!

Conferencia sobre MAP y Curriculum Improvement Studio

El sábado 24 de septiembre, los alumnos de sexto grado tuvieron su convivencia anual en el campus del Colegio de 9:00 a.m. a 5:30 p.m. Su día estuvo lleno de varias actividades divertidas que les ayudó a fortalecer sus lazos de amistad entre compañeros de clase, pero lo más importante, su amistad con Cristo.

Agua sobrante: Si usted tiene plantas, cuando sea posible, riéguelas con agua no utilizada de tomar, cocinar y bañarse. Mantenga una jarra de agua cerca del fregadero, pila o ducha para recoger agua no utilizada. Durante el invierno, recoger agua de lluvia!

El 29 y 30 de septiembre los estudiantes de la Escuela Superior participaron en una Liga del Saber organizada por el Departamento de Español. El propósito de la actividad fue promover hábitos de estudio y reforzar el aprendizaje de los contenidos a ser evaluados en los exámenes del primer bimestre.

Hubo cuatro sesiones por día, donde los alumnos compitieron por sección (10A vs. 10B vs. 10C). La emoción y el orden fueron evidentes durante la actividad, que tuvo lugar en el Salón de Actos. Los ganadores fueron 12B, 11B, 10C y 9C, por tener el mayor número de respuestas correctas. La actividad fue un éxito total, los maestros lograron integrar el contenido de sus clases y promovieron el aprendizaje en los estudiantes.

El jueves 13 de octubre el Colegio Lincoln estará presentando la conferencia, “¿Quisieras tener una radiografía del aprendizaje de tu hijo?” durante la cual los padres de familia tendrán la oportunidad de aprender más sobre los exámenes MAP y Curriculum Improvement Studio. No se pierdan esta conferencia informativa la cual será presentada por el Sr. Alejandro Vogel, Director de Desarrollo.

expectation regarding this year´s

campaign.

Mr. Adolfo Gonzalez talked to the

students about leadership,

especially how to lead by example

and service to others, motivating

them to read materials about youth

leadership. It was a great short

meeting for setting the foundation

of this year’s campaign.

DEA Officer Explains Consequences of Drug Use This year the school has four

ongoing campaigns. One of them

is the “Prevention of Use and

Abuse of Alcohol, Tobacco and

Illegal Substances” and as part of

this campaign, Mr. Mark

Campbell, DEA officer from the

U.S. embassy, came to school to

contribute with his valuable

service in the prevention of the

use of drugs as he explained to the

s t u d e n t s a b o u t a l l t h e

consequences of their use. In

total, 276 students from grades

6th through 9th participated.

Este año el Colegio cuenta con

cuatro campañas en curso. Una de

ellas es la de "Prevención del uso y

del abuso del alcohol, tabaco y

sustancias ilícitas" y como parte

de esta campaña, el Sr. Mark

en la embajada de EE.UU., llegó

al Colegio para contribuir con su

valioso servicio en la prevención

del uso de drogas, explicando a los

estudiantes acerca de todas las

consecuencias de su uso. En total,

paper forms. Another advantage of

the software is that the colleges and

universities that the students are

their applications and will be able to

see updates or changes made.

Claudia Zamora, College Counselor.

As part of the LIA Goes Green campaign we will be

including an Eco Tip each week to give you ideas on how

to save our environment. Here’s our first tip:

The World Youth Day with the

Pope, which is celebrated every

three years, took place this past

August in Madrid, Spain. It is an

honor for the Lincoln family to

know that this year many of our

students were involved in this

encounter. Some of the students

who attended shared their

experience during the assembly

on Monday, September 5th. Juan

Pablo Mántica described his

personal experience at this

LIA Students Participate in WYD Madrid meeting and it is an honor for us to

share it with you:

"At the beginning I did not give

much mind to WYD, but it was

interesting what God had planned

for me. In Madrid, he created a

spectacular environment where we

could remain faithful to the will of

God and pursue Him. I have to

confess I have not been completely

faithful, but I come today to give

my testimony feeling repentant

knowing that to remain faithful is

truly a grace God... I went to Spain

also looking for my vocation. I did

not feel called to priesthood, but it

has been a great grace to be open

to it. One must also know that God

calls you, you cannot choose your

vocation! I invite you to be open to

the vocation of holiness and go to

the next WYD, come on! Pray for

me and God bless.”

El lunes 29 y martes 30 de agosto 11º

y 12º grado recibieron una inducción

a connectedu, un software de

planificación para la universidad que

los estudiantes van a utilizar para

llenar sus aplicaciones en línea en

lugar de utilizar formatos de papel.

Otra ventaja del software es que las

universidades a las que los estudiantes

están aplicando también tendrán

acceso a su información y podrán ver

las actualizaciones o los cambios

realizados.

La inducción fue presentada por el

Sr. Jorge Pérez, Coordinador de

Tecnología, y la Sra. Claudia Zamora,

Consejera de Universidades.

Nuevo software para estudiantes

Como parte de la campaña LIA se Vuelve Verde estaremos

incluyendo un Tip Ecológico cada semana para darle ideas

sobre cómo preservar el ambiente. El primer tip es:

Cámbiate de nuevo al agua de grifo, la cual es amigable

con el medio ambiente, en lugar de agua embotellada.

cabo en Madrid, España la

Jornada Mundial de la Juventud

con el Papa, la cual se celebra

cada tres años. Es un honor para

la familia Lincoln saber que este

año muchos de nuestros estudiantes

participaron en este encuentro. A

su regreso, algunos estudiantes

que asistieron compartieron su

experiencia en el Acto Cívico del

lunes 05 de septiembre. Juan

Pablo Mántica nos describió la

experiencia que vivió personalmente

en esta reunión y es un honor para

“En el comienzo no le puse mucha

mente a la JMJ, pero era

interesante lo que Dios había

planeado para mí. En Madrid se

creó un ambiente espectacular

donde uno podía permanecer fiel a

la voluntad de Dios y dedicarse a

Él. Tengo que confesar que no he

permanecido completamente fiel,

pero sí vengo hoy a dar mi

testimonio arrepentido y sé que

permanecer fiel es verdaderamente

una gracia de Dios... Yo fui a

España también buscando mi

vocación. No me sentí llamado

para el sacerdocio, pero ha sido

una gran gracia de Dios estar

abierto a ello. Hay que saber

también que Dios te llama, uno no

puede elegir su vocación. Los

invito a estar abiertos a la

vocación, a la santidad y a ir a la

próxima JMJ, ¡ánimo! Recen por

mí, que Dios les bendiga.

What’s New in the High School this Year?

This new school year the students

from elementary to high school

are singing the Nicaraguan and

U.S. national anthems from their

classrooms. In the past years, the

students walked to the Assembly

Hall to participate in the civic

activities but now they will listen

to the morning prayer, special an-

nouncements and anthems in their

classrooms through the speaker

system.

This change will encourage the

children to be more engaged in

civic activities. Some teachers are

already projecting the lyrics of the

anthems on screen to motivate the

students to sing.

There will still be a General

Assembly the first week of each

month in the Assembly Hall.

Dear Parents,

I am proud to inform you that there are two new approaches in the high

school this year. First, we have a set of electives for students in grades

nine, ten, and eleven. We are offering three languages: German,

French, and Mandarin, as well as other courses such as Leadership

for the 21st Century, Study Skills, Interactive Appreciation of

Arts, and Graphic Design. Our goal is to prepare the students for the

future on classes selected by them.

Another new approach we have is the differentiated classes where

students attend the classes that meet their needs. We used the MAP

Tests results for the organization of these classes. Our main goal is to

help the students learn at their own pace without the need of competing

with more skillful students. According to research this approach helps

the students to develop social skills.

Please talk with your children about these two new approaches, then

share with us for improvement purposes.

Lo nuevo en la Escuela Superior este año

Este nuevo año escolar los

estudiantes de Primaria a Escuela

Superior estarán cantando el himno

nacional de Nicaragua y el de

Estados Unidos desde sus aulas. En

años anteriores, los estudiantes se

dirigieron al Salón de Actos para

participar en las actividades cívicas;

pero ahora van a escuchar la oración

de la mañana, anuncios especiales y

los himnos desde sus aulas a través

del sistema de altavoces.

Este cambio motivará a los estudiantes

a involucrarse más en las actividades

cívicas. Algunos profesores ya están

proyectando las letras de los himnos

en pantallas para motivar a los

alumnos a cantar.

Se realizará una Asamblea General

la primera semana de cada mes en el

Salón de Actos.

Estimados padres de familia,

Me siento orgulloso de informarles que hay dos nuevos enfoques en la

escuela superior este año. En primer lugar, tenemos materias optativas

para los alumnos noveno, décimo y undécimo grado. Estamos ofreciendo

tres idiomas: Alemán, Francés y Mandarín, así mismo otras materias

como Liderazgo para el Siglo 21, Habilidades de Estudio, Apreciación

Interactiva del Arte y Diseño Gráfico. Nuestro objetivo es preparar a los

estudiantes para el futuro con clases seleccionadas por ellos mismos.

Otro nuevo enfoque que tenemos son las clases diferenciadas, donde los

estudiantes asisten a las clases que satisfagan sus necesidades. Hemos

utilizado los resultados de los exámenes MAP para la organización de

estas clases. Nuestro principal objetivo es ayudar a los estudiantes a

aprender a su propio ritmo, sin la necesidad de competir con los estudiantes

más hábiles. Según investigaciones, este enfoque ayuda a los estudiantes

a desarrollar habilidades sociales.

Por favor, hable con sus hijos acerca de estos dos nuevos enfoques y luego

comparta con nosotros sus comentarios al respecto para fines de mejora.

Bienvenidos al Preescolar Lincoln

Durante las vacaciones se realizaron

muchas remodelaciones importantes

en el colegio. Cada año el colegio

hace un esfuerzo por dar a los

estudiantes un mejor ambiente de

aprendizaje que les permita mejorar

su rendimiento. Este año, algunas de

las mejoras fueron:

Se subió el cielo raso y se agregó más aislante para tener mejor ventilación en las aulas y oficinas.

Nueva área de juegos multiuso (baloncesto, voleibol o tenis)

Aulas multimedia en primaria (aulas equipadas con proyectores, pantallas desplegables, computadoras y sistema de sonido.

Nuevo menú de comida saludable en Cafetería La Estación.

Nueva pista de atletismo y fosa de salto largo.

Nuevas clases electivas: Mandarín, Francés, Alemán, Habilidades de Estudio para el Siglo XXI, Liderazgo para el Siglo XXI y Apreciación Interactiva del Arte.

¡En nombre de todos los docentes y el personal de LIA, les damos la

bienvenida al año escolar 2011-2012!

Le damos gracias a Dios por darnos la oportunidad de celebrar 20 años de

crecimiento, mejora continua, y muchos logros; 20 años de compartir el

éxito de nuestros estudiantes.

El Colegio abrió sus puertas en 1991 con casi 100 alumnos. Hasta la

fecha, se han graduado 643 estudiantes que han continuado su educación

superior en prestigiosas universidades alrededor del mundo; muchos de

ellos regresando a Nicaragua y confiando la educación de sus hijos a LIA.

Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestro colegio, de nuestros programas, y de

nuestros estudiantes. Contamos con ustedes, padres de familia, para que

lleguen a ser miembros integrales de la comunidad del colegio. La educación

es un trabajo en equipo que no puede ocurrir sin el apoyo de cada miembro

del personal, el involucramiento de cada padre de familia, y el compromiso

de cada estudiante.

Welcome to the Lincoln Preschool!

This summer vacation the school

went through many significant

renovations. Every year the school

makes an effort to give the

students a better learning environment

that will allow them to improve

their performance. This year, some

of the improvements were:

Raised ceilings and more insulation for better ventilation in every classroom and office.

New multi-purpose game area (basketball, volleyball or tennis)

Multimedia classrooms in elementary (classrooms equipped with projectors, roll-up screens, computers and sound system).

New healthy menu at The Station Cafeteria.

New track and field course and long jump pit.

New elective classes: Mandarin, French, German, Study Skills for the XXI Century, Leadership for the XXI Century and Interactive Appreciation of Art.

102 new books and 40 new audiovisuals in the library— adding up to a total investment of 2,688

On behalf of the LIA faculty and staff, we welcome you to the 2011-2012

school year!

As we pray for a successful year, we would like to thank God for providing

us the opportunity to celebrate 20 years of growth, improvements,

and accomplishments; 20 years of sharing the success of our

students.

The school opened its doors in 1991, with almost one hundred students.

Thus far, 643 students have graduated and continued their higher education

in prestigious colleges around the world; many of them have come back to

Nicaragua and have trusted their children’s education to LIA.

We are very proud of our school, our programs, and our students. We

sincerely hope that you become an integral member of the school community.

Education is a partnership that cannot take place without the support

of every staff member, the involvement of every parent, and the

commitment of every student.
