What does the Church say about euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide? Intentional euthanasia, sometimes called mercy killing, is mur-der. Regardless of the motives or means, euthanasia consists of putting to death those who are sick, are disabled, or are dying. It is morally unacceptable. The emergence of physician-assisted sui-cide, popularized by the right-to-die movement, seeks to legalize what is an immoral act. Its advocates plan to achieve this on a state-by-state basis. Suicide is gravely sinful whether committed alone or aided by a doctor. Serious psychological disturbances, anxiety, fear of suffer-ing, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide. The question is often asked whether persons who have committed suicide receive eternal salvation. Although suicide is always objectively sinful, one “should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives” (CCC, 2283). The pastoral care of family and friends of those who have taken their own lives is an important focus for the Church’s healing and compassionate ministry. Catholic moral tradition has always taught that we can discon-tinue medical procedures that are burdensome, extraordinary, and disproportionate to the outcome. However, respect for every hu-man being demands the ordinary treatment of the dying by the provision of food, water, warmth, and hygiene. Ordinary treatment is always a moral requirement. There is also extraordinary treatment. The Church recognizes that some medical treatment may not provide benefits commensu-rate with the risks of certain medical procedures. Extraordinary medical treatment may not be morally required and can even cease in certain cases, depending on the benefits to the sick per-son and the burdens it will or may impose. For example, in in-stances when a person has been declared brain-dead, the patient can be disconnected from mechanical devices that sustain breath-ing and the heart since there is little hope of the person’s recovery. Ve tu vida Pregunta para los niños: Jesús nos enseña que el trabajo es bue-no para nosotros. ¿Qué tipo de trabajo hacen durante la semana? ¿Cómo los ayuda? Pregunta para los jóvenes: Aprender a trabajar, y trabajar para vivir, son realidades de la vida mientras creces. ¿Qué papel juega el trabajo en tu vida? ¿Quieres trabajar sólo por el dinero, o también quieres hacer una contribución a la comunidad humana? Pregunta para los adultos: Las palabras de Pablo a los tesalo-nicenses son fuertes: si quieren comer, tienen que trabajar. ¿Cómo se traduce esto a nuestra sociedad de hoy? ¿Cómo creen que esto es compatible con el mandamiento de Jesús de amar y alimentar a los pobres? What single word stands out to you? Look into your life Question for children: Jesus teaches us that work is good for us. What kind of work do you do during the week? How does it help you? Do you want to work only for money, or do you also want to make a contribution to the human community? Question for adults: Paul's words to the Thessalonians are tough: if you want to eat, you must work! How does this translate into our society today? How do you recon-cile this with Jesus' command to love and feed the poor? Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: Today’s Gospel invites us to live in hope and to share what God has given us as we await Jesus’ return. What can your family do to live in joyful hope for Jesus’ return? Remind the family that your faithfulness and love is a reflection of God’s love for the world. Make a poster with a large circle in the center representing a mirror. Within the mirror, draw pictures or make a list of ways that your family can reflect God’s love within and beyond the household. Is there someone you know who is having trouble right now? What can you do to help that person persevere in faith? Go around the table and ask each family member what they would want to be doing if Jesus returned today. Would you live your life differently if you knew exactly when Jesus was coming? If so, how would your life change?
