I believe they understood the difficulties and the mistakes that lay ahead, and they understood the frailties of being human, but they relied on a firm belief that human error can be mitigated by the desire to advance the common good. Of course, the definition of what constitutes this “common good” would have to be tested over time, but would also evolve for the benefit of the general population as reason, charity, and a sense of common purpose advances. It is, perhaps, a lack of common purpose that has caused our social upheaval in recent years, but we have reason to hope that this new energy will help us discern a clearer and kinder path toward true inclusion of those who have been oppressed and suppressed for too many generations. The fact that multitudes are facing up to clearer views of realities is hopeful for the growth and advancement of justice for us all. My Brothers, 244 years ago a number of very brave and determined souls set out on an uncertain journey and a bold experiment. They were intent on an ideal that a people of different backgrounds, histories, ethnicities and languages could agree on a set of principles and certain common objectives, and govern themselves without royalty to decree how a country should exist in this world. I believe they understood the difficulties and the mistakes that lay ahead, and they understood the frailties of being human, but they relied on a firm belief that human error can be mitigated by the desire to advance the common good. that my observation may be biased because I am old, but it seems to me that while our world abounds in so many good things, it also abounds in an apathy that imperils us all. What are we to do? Well, a couple of months ago, I asked in our Knightly Notes for members to offer feedback and suggestions as to things we could do that would encourage members to at least occasionally come to one of our monthly meetings at the Church. The good news is that I received some good feedback that I intend to follow through on when we are allowed to gather as a Council again. The bad news is that I only heard from three of you, and all three already are regular attendees. OK, that didn’t work, but I still have hope. In the 3rd chapter of the 1st Book of Samuel, we read of Samuel answering God’s call to service. While sleeping, God called to Samuel three separate times. Each time, Samuel goes to his mentor, Eli, who replies that he did not call to him. Eli and Samuel realize that God was calling Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” This Council needs you. In our 300+ dues paying members, there are those with skills that would advance the work of our Council and Parish, and might even make you a more productive citizen. We need you to step up and participate. It’s why we became Knights. My contact information can be found in this newsletter. Please let me hear from you. Your name doesn’t have to be Samuel.

Message from Financial Secretary

Understanding the efforts, the hackers are taking to get info from the UKnight system, made me rethink the visible of email information we all have been putting out there.

The point on UKnight from the other email should not apply to other members. Try not to send emails with names and email addresses visible on the TO: line, consider using

BLIND COPY. But if you have to show names; Look at your contacts "display as line", do you show just the

names, or do you also show their email address? Consider altering to just the name. I was surprised looking at my own.

After sending this concern out Statewide and pointing out how listing emails on the To: line, is playing into hackers hands; I noted someone who continued to do so with large distribution lists.

To make my point, I highlighted his email distribution list, copied it into excel, and did a little converting, and emailed him back an excel file with most First names, Last names, and over 100 email addresses in the 3rd column. It is easy to do!

I hope this makes scene, and as always if you have questions call me.

As 10442 Financial Secretary (September 1st, 2019 to June 30th, 2020), I thought it might help members understand just what support the Knights have provided during this short time and hopefully offer each of you some pride in being a member of the Knights.

$2,400. There are 4 seminarians associated from St Joseph Husband of Mary; the Council sent each of them $600 to help with their day to day personal needs not covered by the Diocese.

$500 to First Choice Pregnancy $250 Wreaths for Boulder City Veterans Cemetery in December (the Assembly added $500 to

this effort) $2,590 from Tootsie Roll drive to mentally challenged $3,840 in St Joseph Husband of Mary Parish support $1,000 in Parish Scholarships $500 to Catholic Charities ($500 also matched by the Assembly) $500 to Three Square food service ($500 also matched by the Assembly) Assembly also sent $500 to each of the 4 parishes for COVID-19 assistance. $500 to the St

Therese Center, $500 to Three Square, $1,000 Catholic Worker, $250 UNLV Newman Center, over $500 in veteran items.

With the Assembly COVID-19 Virus MATCHING CONTRIBUTION FUNDS drive to provide food to members, that is now at $1,175. Know someone that needs help, just reply to this email.

Between our two Knights groups in 7 months that is over $18,500 and certainly more than I would have guessed.

I hope this helps you take a little more Pride in being a Knight. With more hands-on help, could it be even more?

Vivat Jesus! Ken 702-203-7403 [email protected]

Good of the Order

Please pray for long time member Patrick Boland who has onset Alzheimer’s disease and his wife Joselyn. They are in need of our prayers for comfort and ease in this time of their life.

If you or someone you know would like to be on the prayer list or if you know of someone who should be removed from previous prayer lists, please contact the editors of this newsletter until a new Fraternal Chair has volunteered.

It is with great sadness that I have to report to the council the passing from this life of Tony Ruivivar. He was a very dedicated member of our council. Even though he had medical problems Tony attended most all of our events and council meetings. He and his wife Karen who was an active LADY’S AUXILIARY MEMBER were both instrumental in the support of the council. Tony will be sorely missed. Please pray for the Ruivivar family that they might be comforted through this difficult time. Messages of condolence can be sent to Karen Ruivivar at: 2836 Barrow Downs St., Las Vegas, NV. 891135

Council 10442 Insurance Field agent

(Article is repeat of June Newsletter Article) Notes from the field…from my office…at home My brother knights, This has certainly been the strangest time in the history of the Knights of Columbus. But it has been an amazing time as well. When the stay at home directive went out from our Governor many of us in the order were confused about what our role should be. We were used to mobilizing. We were used to getting out there and getting things done. This was true of our fraternal work as well as the financial work of the Knights. What were we supposed to do when the main thing expected of everyone was to stay at home? Within a week of the lockdown, the Knights of Columbus had figured out what needed to be done on both fronts. Fraternally, we initiated the “Leave No Neighbor Behind” initiative. As the coronavirus pandemic unfolded, our duty was to lead our families, protect our parishes, and serve our communities, remembering always that where there’s a need, there’s a Knight. Councils have responded with care, compassion and charity and we have been taking care of each other. The Insurance program also responded swiftly. Within the first week of the lockdown here, the Knights of Columbus provided the technology we needed to be able to assist our members even as we stayed apart. Whether it was making changes to existing plans or putting new plans in place, all of it could, for the first time, be completed at a distance. A comprehensive needs analysis and even complete applications could be completed in these virtual meetings. While most of us would prefer to be sitting together at the kitchen table, especially for the most difficult visits, such as those we have when a member passes away, our meetings over the computer have been the next best thing. Just because we cannot meet face to face does not mean we cannot meet “face to face” Using a computer or even just a smart phone a member can meet with his field agent and still take advantage of all of the incredible member benefits available to us as Knights. Virtual member benefits nights, such as the one offered recently by our General Agent, Kevin Tuuri, will likely continue even once things get back to “normal.” None of us need feel like he is alone. We are not. The Knights of Columbus continues as a brotherhood of charity no matter what the current challenge. Fraternally, Stephen Melancon, PGK, FSCP Field Agent Vivat Jesus!

News from the Ladies Auxiliary Ladies Auxiliary Knights of Columbus St. Joseph, Husband of Mary Council #10442

Dear Sisters, I hope everyone had a safe and fun 4th of July. I know the Corona Virus has restricted holiday get-togethers and traveling, but we can still find ways to keep in touch with our friends and families. One of our members has suggested we form a “calling tree” to keep in touch to keep each other safe. I will be sending out an e-mail with more information to get your feedback on the suggestion. Hopefully, the church and the Supreme Knights of Columbus will allow us to begin having meetings in August, when I would like to have another Bingo Night to begin our new fraternal year. Congratulations to our officers for the 2021-2022 fraternal year. Many thanks to Paula for conducting the election.
