NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT Worthy Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I hope that your Day has found you all well and everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

May we all indeed be truly grateful for all of our blessings.

My, my how time flies the month of November has past and the temperatures are more comfortable even chilly.

At the beginning of November we all celebrated All Saints Day and the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day).

November 4th and 5th, we finished up our tootsie roll drive at the Smiths locations on Buffalo and Flamingo and on West Sahara.

For the drives at the Church and the Smiths Food and Drug Stores

Total Church sales – $2,087.00 Total Smith’s sales - $ 1,922.00 Total sales - $4,000.09

A portion of these sales will go to the State Council to be distributed to the mentally challenged and the

remainder will be for the Council to donate to a charity of its choosing that works with the mentally challenged.

Thanks again for everyone’s help in making this successful.

November 25th we had a First Degree Exemplification.

And I’d like to welcome newly installed fellow Brothers Dale Larcom, Paul Slade, and JD Henderson to the

Order and to our Council.

November 26th we had our Pancake Breakfast in the hall.

Not so good this time, I think, but we can make it up for when we do the Breakfast w/ St. Nick on December the 10th. The Ladies Auxiliary

also had their religious goods sale on the 26th. At the same time as the Breakfast thanks go out to Brothers who helped Brother Franco and

Lady Becky with bringing and returning the Religious goods to and from the storage area.

Thanks again go out to everyone who helped with the setup on the 25th and for the running and operating, breakdown, and cleanup.

And packing the materials up and taking back to storage on the 26th. .

Unbelievable of how many Christmas parties there is this year! The O’ Callahan Assembly#2820 will be having on at the same location as

last year on the 16th of December and the Catholic War Veterans Post #1947 will also be having their own Christmas Party as well.

I still have tickets to those who may interested in attending the Christmas Party hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary on December 8th that will be

held at The Sienna Bistro the cost for theses are $40.00 per person.

.On December 2nd and 3rd we will once again be distributing Keep Christ in Christmas Buttons in the Plaza after

each Mass Brother Tom O’ Reilly has done a great job with getting this all set and organized thanks again Tom !

May each of you have a happy, healthy, and safe Holiday Season and a very blessed New Year!

Advent is also meant to do this to us — to refresh us and make us healthy, to be able to receive Christ in

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL!!!!

**********************************************************************

HELP WANTED Our Council is in urgent need of two Brothers interested in learning and assuming some of the cooking

and kitchen management responsibilities for our events. If you have cooking experience, or just have an

interest in learning more about cooking, this is an opportunity for you to serve us and your Parish. You will

work alongside our current cook and learn our systems with the intent that you would

assist with food planning, food purchasing, food prep, and health code compliance. The

long term plan would be that you would alternate with the others and take over an event

and make it your own.

The scope and breadth of our activities has gotten way too much for one

individual to manage. If you are interested in serving the Knights in this capacity, contact

Fred Smith, worthy Financial Secretary, via phone or text at 509-499-1622 or email him

at [email protected]. He will facilitate a meeting so that you can learn more

before committing. Please prayerfully consider this call for help.

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF FATHER MCGIVNEY Founder of the Knights of Columbus in 1882

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and the lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son Jesus Christ more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J McGivney on earth according to the design of Your Holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (make your request) Through Christ our Lord. Amen

An Advent Reflection Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, TOR

"During Advent opportunities for works of charity abound calling out for Christians from every side: a sack of food for a needy family, money dropped in a Salvation Army kettle, a donation to an Indian school, a toy for ‘Toys-for-Tots,’ etc. Unfortunately, these works of charity so easily can assuage the Christian conscience, while doing nothing to being about a solution to the root causes of the problem. "Works of justice, on the other hand, follow the road less traveled of Advent’s hope to pursue solutions for difficult problems. Hope comes through works of justice rather than simply performing works of charity."

A DIFFERENT BLACK FRIDAY 11/24/2017

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCILS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES

DISTRIBUTE NEW WINTER COATS TO CHILDREN ON BLACK FRIDAY

On this Black Friday, in various settings across the country, instead of going to

crowded malls searching for sale items, Knights of Columbus reached out to

children in need by presenting them with new winter coats.

This national effort continues to build on a program called Coats for Kids that

began in 2009. The distribution of coats on Black Friday started in Bridgeport,

Conn., during Thanksgiving weekend in 2012.

“While society pushes us to buy things on Black Friday, the Knights of

Columbus remember those who don’t have basic necessities that most of us

take for granted,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Our members are

making sure that children have something essential, a coat, to help them stay

warm during winter.”

Coats were be distributed, Nov. 24, at sites in Washington, Connecticut, Idaho,

Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Maryland, Illinois, Nebraska, and

Washington, D.C. Last year, 1,600 K of C councils distributed more than

80,000 new winter coats on Black Friday and other special events.

Since the program’s inception, the Knights have given more than 400,000 new

winter coats to children in need.

segment called the “Good of the Order.” This is time that is reserved for participants to offer comments

or observations about the organization and its work. It is also time set aside for disciplinary matters

involving fellow members.

That’s what the phrase “the good of the order” means to those who are skilled parliamentarians. But

when I hear this phrase, I also think about the Knights of Columbus. I think about the good of our

Order, founded in 1882 by Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney.

STRONG OPINIONS

I think about who makes up the Knights of Columbus and all that it does in service of others, and I ask

myself, “How can I promote the good of the Order?”

The Order we joined is not a debating society, nor is it an arena where we play out a contest of wills.

Rather, it is an organization rooted in charity, which expresses itself in genuine unity of mind and heart and in a brotherhood

of service. In fact, our ability to do great good for our members, our Church and our world depends on our willingness to

preserve and strengthen this solidarity.

At times, we may disagree with a decision made by our local or state council, or with a decision that comes from Supreme.

After we’ve expressed our opinion respectfully and cogently, we may be upset that our view did not prevail. When that

happens, it’s easy to throw our unity and charity under the proverbial bus. Sadly, some brother Knights may even decide to

walk away.. We have to stop being angry, look at what the Order is really all about, and listen to the voice of the Lord.

SOLIDARITY IN CHRIST

The first step is quelling our anger. There is such a thing as just anger when we see injustice or corruption. However, that is

not the same as harboring enmity, grudges, rivalries or even thoughts of vengeance against a person who gets under our skin.

Second is the need to look carefully at what is central in the life of the Order. The charity we share is not merely our good will

but the charity of Christ. The unity we share is not merely a human consensus but rather the unity of the Holy Trinity. And

the brotherhood we share is that of the Son of God who became one of us and united himself to us. If you think this sounds a

bit inflated, please reconsider! Our solidarity in Christ, for example, is more than agreement based on common interests. It is

a moral virtue and a God-given power to band together to do enormous good. So, while it is natural to get upset when we don’t

get our way and our views are overridden, we must not stay angry and forget to look at the bigger picture.

Finally, we need to listen – first to the voice of the Lord and of the Church, then to our loved ones, and then to our brother

Knights. From time to time, our strong opinions can make it difficult to pray so as to discern the will of God and to hear what

the Church or others are telling us. Therefore, we need to keep things in perspective by developing our life of prayer –

listening to the voice of the Lord and seeking his will in our lives. Then, when we speak, even if we disagree, our words will

have the ring of wisdom and authenticity. Let us all devote ourselves anew to the Good of the Order! --Kofc
