KNIGHT OF THE MONTH- July 2018

Michael T Sileo

Our Knight of the Month for July 2018 is Michael Sileo Michael is being honored for his constant support and help of the Council. He attends every event when possible and helps out all he can. You will see him helping out quietly wherever there is a need when he is available. He has been

helping a lot lately by coming to help with all the setups for Council activities. When contacted for this picture he wanted to be sure we had the right Michael because he did not feel he had done anything extraordinary. That is his humble outlook on helping out. We are proud to honor him and wish to thank him and let him know that is constant support and help have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Thanks Michael for all you do!

KNIGHT OF THE YEAR- Fraternal year 2017-2018

LAMAR JOHNSON

Lamar Johnson was named Knight of the Year at the Past Grand Knight’s Luau on

at Council events helping- just quietly does whatever needs to be done and

without being recognized for it. He has been there helping for years and you can

always depend upon him to help. He also serves as an usher for the Parish.

Thank you Lamar!!! Council is proud to honor you as Knight of the Year.

******************************************************************************

FAMILY OF THE YEAR- Fraternal year 2017-2018

Franco and Becki Brigandi

Also at the PGK Luau, GK Ray named Franco and Becki Brigandi as Family of the Year. They are being honored as an excellent example of a Family working together to help each other and support the Council. Franco is constantly behind the scenes in the kitchen cooking all day for Council dinners, and spends a lot of time on his feet doing the prep and shopping. Becki supports him in this, and also is very active in the Ladies Auxiliary – she is co-chairwoman of the Religious Goods Sales and so is there at all the masses of the sales, and setup and pack up. She is also currently serving as Vice President of the Auxiliary. This couple is very deserving of

the honor. The Council is very proud to honor them as Family of the Year! ************************************************************************************* Food for Thought….. Be ye fishers of Men – You catch ‘em –He will clean them!

Urgently need Your Help! Prayerfully Consider

Our Council is in urgent need of two Brothers interested in learning and assuming some of the cooking and kitchen

management responsibilities for our events. If you have cooking experience, or just have an interest in learning more about

cooking, this is an opportunity for you to serve us and your Parish. You will work alongside our current cook and learn our systems

with the intent that you would assist with food planning, food purchasing, food prep, and health code

compliance. The long term plan would be that you would alternate with the others and take over an event

and make it your own. Last update was that Brother Danny Iliscupidez has stepped up and become a

“regular” great helper in the prep/cooking part of the kitchen, which we totally appreciate. Chuck is having

some physical issues and it is hard for him to do all of this right now. So we still need someone to

learn/assist/backup PGK Chuck in the buying of the supplies and getting them to the kitchen. Most are purchases at either Restaurant Depot or Smart and Final, or wherever has the best prices at the time of what we need for the Breakfast/Dinner in question. We also are in desperate need of Knights to help each dinner in Transporting items to and from the Shed. As you can see, the scope

and breadth of our activities has gotten way too much for one individual to manage. Please prayerfully consider serving the

Knights in this capacity. Contact GK Ray Foster, at 702-287-6725. ************************************************************************************

In Loving Memory of Kathy Fuselier, who went to our Lord last month. She was the wife of

SK Leon Fuselier. This loving couple was founding members of the Parish of St Joseph

Husband of Mary and served on the committee that built the sanctuary. The Color Corps

will be attending the Funeral. For all others who wish to attend, the Funeral is Friday Aug

24 2018 at SJHOM. Rosary is 130pm, Mass is at 2pm. Reception in the Hall to follow the

Mass. Please keep her soul and her husband and family in your prayers.

Activities and Recap of July from GK Ray

July 5th was our Business meeting. We had a potluck before the meeting.

Saturday, July the 7th the Council officers and the officers for the Ladies Auxiliary had their installation at St. Joseph HOM in the Hall after the 4:30pm Mass. A small reception was held afterwards also in held in the Hall.

The new officers are pictured here. Let us all give them full support!

July 21st we had the Past Grand Knight Luau at the Thompson’s Residence. See pictures at the end of the newsletter.

Brother Lamar Johnson was awarded the Knight of the Year And Family of the Year was awarded to Brother Franco and Lady Rebecca Brigandi. Past grand Knights in attendance were also recognized.

On Saturday, July 29th we had our coffee and doughnuts in the hall. We shared the space with the Women of St. Joseph who were doing Christmas in July craft fair. Although we didn’t have room for a lot of tables, it went really well for both groups. It was nice that the parishioners who came in after each Mass got a doughnut or a bagel, and also browsed the goods that the Women of St. Joseph had on display. Made for a good event.

Some thoughtful humor………………

****************************************************************************************************************** “I strongly suspect that if we saw all the difference even the tiniest of our prayers to God make, and all the people those little

prayers were destined to affect, and all the consequences of those effects down through the centuries, we would be so paralyzed

with awe at the power of prayer that we would be unable to get up off our knees for the rest of our lives.” -Peter Kreeft

Thought for the month:

We Know What Is Waiting For Us – We Can Surely Say The Best Is Yet To Come!

BY FAITHHUB Jesus, thank You for sacrificing Yourself so that we may be forgiven our sins and made worthy to spend eternity with You in paradise. We thank You for the serenity this brings us. Knowing we’ll soon spend eternity at your knee is the greatest blessing we could ever receive. Our lives are so short and the best is yet to come.

A woman was diagnosed with a terminal illness and given three months to live. She asked her Pastor to come to her home to discuss her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at her funeral, and what scriptures she wanted read, and which outfit she wanted to be buried in. Then she said, “One more thing… I want to be buried with a fork in my hand.” The pastor was surprised. The woman explained, “In all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably say to everyone, ‘Keep your fork.’ It was my favorite time of the dinner, because I knew something better was coming, like velvety chocolate cake or deep dish apple pie – something wonderful. So, I want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and wonder, ‘What’s with the fork?’ Then, I want you to tell them, ‘Keep your fork, because the best is yet to come.'” The pastor’s eyes welled up with tears of joy as he bid the woman goodbye. He realized she had a better grasp of heaven than he did, and knew something better was coming. At the funeral, when people asked him why she was holding a fork, the pastor told them of the conversation he had with the woman before she died. He said he could not stop thinking about the fork, and knew they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right. “Keep your fork. The best is yet to come.”

St. Joseph, Husband of Mary Council #10442 Ladies Auxiliary Greetings Ladies!

Sixteen of us begin our new year together in a special Game Social night on July 5th. The games

included three simple team contests of “Ping Pong Toss”, “Blindfold Bowling” and a rousing “Pony Derby”. The ladies

placed a dollar bet with our “Bookie” Sandy D’Agostino on their choice in the “Pony Derby”. Two winners, Brianna

(Anita’s daughter} and Donna Urso-Vuolo, placed their bets on #2 who came in first in the Derby. The ladies split the

$13.00 pot for $6.50 each.

Our four teams (Pink Posse, Blue Belles, Lavender Ladies & Teal Tempest) battled for first place scoring team points in

the first two games. After a final review of scoring, even though the Teal Tempest won the Derby and an extra 20 points

for a total of 36, they did not catch the Pink Posse. This team racked up 45 points in Ping Pong Toss and Blindfold

Bowling!

Refreshments included cool Wine spritzers or Strawberry Lemonade and several snacks our ladies brought to share. This

evening was a hit and a fun time was had by all!

THE DIGNITY OF EVERY HUMAN LIFE 7/1/2018

by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson

ON THE EVE OF THE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES, POPE FRANCIS REAFFIRMS THE IMPORTANT CONNECTION BETWEEN LIFE ETHICS AND SOCIAL ETHICS In my Columbia columns for January and April earlier this year, I reflected on Blessed Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Humanae Vitae and its enduring messages on marriage and the gift of life — messages further discussed throughout this issue. The following month, on May 25, Irish voters repealed the Eighth Amendment to that country’s constitution, which for decades had protected the lives of countless unborn children from abortion. Providentially, Pope Francis had the courage to place the World Meeting of Families in Ireland next month. He has set the stage for the meeting with the recent publication of his apostolic exhortation on the call to holiness, Gaudete et Exsultate (Rejoice and Be Glad).

There is much to reflect upon in Gaudete et Exsultate. In one section, the pope writes: “Our defense of the innocent unborn, for example, needs to be clear, firm and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of a human life, which is always sacred and demands love for each person, regardless of his or her stage of development. Equally sacred, however, are the lives of the poor, those already born, the destitute, the abandoned and the underprivileged, the vulnerable infirm and elderly…. We cannot uphold an ideal of holiness that would ignore injustice in (the) world” (101). No organization knows this better than the Knights of Columbus. We have been “clear, firm and passionate” in our defense of the dignity of every human life. Our Ultrasound Initiative alone, which has sought to protect the lives of both mother and child by providing more than 950 ultrasound machines to qualified pregnancy resource centers, has already saved hundreds of thousands of lives. Pope Francis goes on to write in Gaudete et Exsultate, “We often hear it said that … the situation of migrants, for example, is a lesser issue. Some Catholics consider it a secondary issue compared to the ‘grave’ bioethical questions. The pope is right. These are not “secondary” issues because there are no “secondary” people. There are public issues that involve intrinsically evil acts, such as the intentional killing of an innocent human being as in the case of abortion. And there are other issues that involve prudential judgments about which reasonable people may disagree. But that does not mean such issues are “secondary.” In most countries, poverty and disease are the leading causes of death. Here again, the Knights of Columbus has been a leader — during the last fraternal year providing more than $185 million and more than 75 million hours of volunteer service to charity. This is why Pope Francis reminds us that holiness, evangelization, charity and human development are profoundly linked. And as will be apparent during the upcoming World Meeting of Families, all of these aspects of the Christian life find their home in the family. The Order has always sought to evangelize and strengthen the spiritual life of our Catholic families. As Knights of Columbus we will more clearly live in a way that witnesses to the Christian call to holiness, evangelization, charity and social justice. Vivat Jesus!
