Throughout the spring, we've seen many positive indications that the mar-ket is beginning to recover in many parts of the world. Paper pulp prices are on the rise and timber stores at sawmills are starting to shrink. I'm sure that activity in the forest industry will pick up the pace by fall this year.

Despite the economic stagna-tion we've seen for the past eighteen months, we've invested more in re-search and development in order to produce new products.

In this issue of Just forest, you'll get to know more about the Komatsu 895, which went into serial production in March, as well as a sneak preview of the new Komatsu 845. Together with the other new forwarders – the Kom-atsu 855 and the Komatsu 865 – we've now presented no fewer than four new forwarders in the space of a year!

All our new forwarders feature the new revolutionary cab with the optional Comfort Ride cab suspension system. Ergonomics are important and Kom-atsu Comfort Ride provides a more comfortable ride than ever before. some companies have trouble retain-ing young, competent operators, and in many cases the operators decide which machines are purchased. We continue our work to improve machine ergonomics, and the new forwarders are good examples of these efforts.

Naturally, all the new forwarders have engines with green Tier 3B tech-nology. We were the first manufacturer to bring transition models with Tier 3B/Tier 4 status to market, and we've used this technology in the Komatsu 911.5 and Komatsu 931.1 harvesters since

the beginning of 2011. These engines have proven to deliver exceptionally low fuel consumption. Other manu-facturers are now adopting this engine technology. however, with a good two years' experience of serial production, we're a few steps ahead of the compe-tition and have further honed our ex-pertise in the field.

We're also industry leaders in ICT (Information and Communications Technology). Maxifleet, the world's first web-based system for fleet man-agement, has been introduced in im-portant markets. This is a superior tool for service, a powerful reporting system, and a perfect solution for vi-sualizing work on massive plantations in Brazil. The system is designed to be used in a preventative service and maintenance program, to help our customers use additional preventative maintenance to keep their machines running and increase their productivity. Preventative service and maintenance are particularly important in expansive and remote areas where rapid service is difficult to offer.

I expect our sales in Russia to show further growth over the coming years, and Russia is also an important mar-ket for used machines. In the forest industry, used equipment must con-tinually be transferred from countries with a high level of mechanization to countries where mechanization is still under way, such as Russia. This ben-efits everyone. Large stocks of used machines in mechanized countries are bad for manufacturers and contractors alike, as used machine prices fall when trade is slow.

The New FRaMe has a split design with a self-bearing axle and a new frame-axle interface. The underside of the frame is designed to facilitate mobility in difficult terrain. Together with the 26.5" wheels, ground clearance is high and ground pressure is low.

A new hydrostatic transmission sys-tem optimizes power usage effectively. The system rapidly adapts when the load

changes depending on the terrain, obsta-cles, inclines, and crane loads.

Moreover, the high flow and larger ca-pacity hydraulic lines on the crane ensure the speed is there when needed. Crane performance is further enhanced by the outer boom's 4-point link.

Together, the Maxixplorer 3.1 control system and the effective hydraulics en-sure a highly productive crane. Maxix-plorer allows the operator to quickly ad-just crane performance characteristics to

match working conditions.The cab interior offers more space in

all directions. The cab features greatly improved visibility upward and all around.

The CRaNe has a LoNG ReaCh and internal hose routing to protect the hosing and hydraulics.

The pillar has been redesigned to op-timize its weight for use as a thinning for-warder, and provides good geometry and lifting height.

The crane also features balanced geom-etry, long reach, a perfect and secure park-ing position, and generous lifting height. The new combi outer boom features im-

provements such as individual tensioning of hoses, easily adjusted sliders, and larger di-ameter hydraulic lines for lower back pres-sure.

The parked crane has a low profile, and as such a low transport height.

The high working pressure makes it fast and efficient. The performance is aided by the optimized outer boom link, which pro-vides more even power and speed through-out the entire working range.

New flexible traNsmissioNThe koMaTsU 845 has a new transmission system that automatically adapts to the load, any inclines, and all obstacles in the forest. This enables the forwarder to maneuver through the for-est faster, regardless of the terrain.

The transmission system automati-cally adapts the traction and delivers high torque at low engine speeds. The operator can adjust the continuously variable speed range for both high and low gear and the system automatically adjusts to changes in the load due to terrain, obstacles, inclines, and crane loads.

Driving performance can also be set to different driving modes depending on the operator's preferences.

There is a new feature, Economy mode, that helps the operator optimize fuel consumption. In order to better uti-lize the diesel engine's performance and to improve the new forwarder's handling in steep terrain, the transmission can further increase traction when the going gets tough and speed drops.

iMPRoVeD VisibiLiTyThe cab has large windows all around. The side supports are positioned farther back and upward visibility is considerably better.

The new Komatsu 845 has a cab that combines space, visibility, and low noise levels.

The operator has more space in all direc-tions. The interior volume of the cab has been increased by 21 percent when com-pared to the preceding model.

And there are a number of other improve-ments. The new cab design has greatly im-proved visibility. All windows throughout the cab are larger, which improves visibility in all directions. side visibility has been improved by, for example, repositioning the side sup-ports farther back and refining their design.

As the cab is taller and the design has been refined, even upward visibility has been improved considerably.

The cab environment of the Komatsu 845 is really quiet. One reason is that open-ings into the cab, such as for cables, are fit-ted with seals to prevent open channels for noise. Another is the noise shield between the engine and the cab to prevent engine noise from entering the cab. The new en-gine is also very quiet and a fan controller automatically regulates the speed of the oil

cooling fan as needed. The cab has an ergonomically designed

seat developed specially for forest ma-chines. The seat can be locked at any angle between 0-220 degrees.

To increase comfort even further, the cab now has improved, and increased, storage spaces with thoughtful placement and im-proved utilization.

A new smart radio with Bluetooth and handsfree functionality is a comfort re-quested by operators.

Now it's easy to wirelessly connect a smartphone to the radio in order, for exam-ple, to stream music or audio books.

iT's iMPoRTaNT to have an engine that combines good fuel economy with high per-formance. The engine in the 845 does this. high torque at low engine speeds, effective stage 4 technology, and good interaction between the crane and the transmission are a few examples.

New FRaMe DesiGNThe new frame is split in two, is strong and durable, and offers good obstacle clearance. The underside of the frame is boat-shaped and the bogie is integrated with the frame.

bJøRN VeGaRD, with the help of the 911.4, showed how to thin a spruce stand and Tv viewers got to see just how efficient a modern harvester can be. Bjørn vegard's 911.4 is equipped with Maxixplorer and GPs. Maxixplorer is a complete system for machine and head control, crosscutting, and administration. With this system, the operator can achieve optimum productiv-ity, flexibility, and functionality. The result – complete control over all harvesting as-signments in great detail, down to individu-al logs. And all the harvesting data is trans-ferred in a flash to the client, in this case Mjösen skog BA, one of Norway's largest forest owner cooperatives.

"The sysTeM is siMPLy sUPeRb. Besides the actual crosscutting and pro-duction, Maxixplorer also includes the

MaxiN software, which shows boundaries and overviews of stands, biotopes, and ter-rain. It's also a great help in achieving high productivity and for moving through the for-est with as little impact as possible. Color marking and stump processing are also parts of the Maxi suite," says Bjørn vegard.

We met Bjørn vegard and his colleague André Bråtsveen when they were working in a forest in Ringsaker, their home municipali-ty. The assignment comprised 21,200 cubic feet (600 m3) of an 80-year-old spruce stand in a well grown forest. In the space of a few hours, Bjørn vegard and the 911.4 harvester with a 350.1 head produced 7,420 cubic feet (210 m3) of timber in the shape of 17-foot (5.2 m) long logs, together with sawtimber (12–16 feet / 3.74–4.90 m) and pulpwood.

"Easily processed, quality wood with

no knots. About 60 percent for harvesting at 2½ trees per cubic meter," Bjørn vegard comments while colleague André Bråtsveen fills the forwarder with yet another load. The forwarder is equipped with Loadflex, which means the bunk can be widened. This pro-vides a low center of gravity and stable ma-neuvering in rugged terrain.

"We receive control files from every for-est. This enables us to check that the har-vester is crosscutting the timber in the most financially favorable manner. We use this process with all the contractors we engage, so that we can guarantee that the harvest-ers are correctly calibrated and the owners receive the best possible financial return from their forests," says forestry manager

On January 24, 20-year-old Bjørn Vegard Lierhagen from Brumunddal in Norway became something of a national celebrity on Norwegian TV. In conjunction with the Norwegian Forest Owners Association's centenary, modern forestry was showcased at prime time on the TV news. One of the reports was about Bjørn Vegard and the 911.4 harvester.

With GPS and good software (MaxiN), Bjørn Vegard has full control over boundaries, forest stands, and his exact location.

Anders flugsrud, who also appreciates the environmental advantages of the advanced Maxixplorer system.

"from Bjørn vegard, I receive the map I sent him with a superimposed 'track log'. The map is marked with areas of environ-mental and cultural importance. If the ma-chine operator finds others not included, they are added with their exact GPs coor-dinates. These maps then provide a basis for ground preparation and planting work. Protected trees are marked with their GPs coordinates and left standing. Any ground damage caused by the vehicle is marked on the map so that the excavator can find it," says Anders.

eVeN as a ChiLD, Bjørn vegard Lier-hagen spent time in the forest and some of his teenage years were spent in the driver's

seat of his father Roar Lierhagen's har-vester. however, it wasn't until 2010 that he 'really' started working in the forest, as an apprentice at his father's company, Lier-hagens skogsdrift As, which was founded in 2005. Bjørn vegard's older brother, stig Roar, also works at the company, which re-cently moved into newly built premises with 6,500 square feet (600 m2) of space housing a workshop and a smaller office area with conference facilities.

"Dad advised me not to get into forestry. But kids don't always listen to their parents, so I did it anyway. And I really enjoy the work," says Bjørn vegard, who completed a two-year course for agricultural mechanics before joining his father's company. In June, Bjørn vegard will sit his professional exam to become a certified forest machine operator.

Lierhagen skogsdrift As, Brumund-dal (Ringsaker Municipality, hedmark County, Norway's largest forest coun-ty), near Mjösa (Norway's largest lake), 90 miles (140 km) north of Oslo.The company was founded in 2005, has 12 employees, and harvests almost 3.9 million cubic feet (about 110,000 m3) annually. maxifleet oN the requiremeNts listFor more than a year, MaxiFleet has been part of an extensive machine fleet trial in Germany. Contractor Maik Wiche is among those who have used the system. Now he's convinced MaxiFleet will be on the requirements specification next time he needs to replace a machine.

Maik wiChe works where others vaca-tion. he's often seen operating his 901Tx harvester on the German island resort of usedom. When sales advisor Martin Keitel told him about Komatsu's new system for managing their fleet, the young entrepre-neur took an immediate interest in the new technology. Alongside the software, the sys-tem includes a modem and a GPs antenna for the necessary communication link. The web-based system offers several functions. This means that, in addition to remote main-

tenance and performance and production reports, machine diagnosis is also possible.

During remote maintenance, Komatsu's engineers have direct access to the forest machine's computer system once the oper-ator provides approval. for safety reasons, the operator must provide approval on every occasion, with a simple mouse click.

"It's a really neat function as the engi-neers are often hundreds of miles away, but they can still connect to the system in just a few minutes," says Maik.

This MeaNs costly unplanned downtime can often be avoided. In practice, it can also mean that timely maintenance is conducted. As an example, a machine was making er-rors when crosscutting. following a brief call to Komatsu forest, an engineer logged into the machine. he quickly found the problem. One of the two diameter sensors was faulty. The defective sensor was temporarily deac-tivated with a mouse click. This meant pro-cessing went slower, but the machine could continue working without much downtime.

The service that was actually planned for the next week was simply moved forward. This meant the sensor could be replaced in con-junction with the regular maintenance work with no additional call-out fee.

"At first, I was skeptical about the ben-efits of a fleet management system, as I only use the machine for single shifts. however, my doubts soon proved to be unfounded," says Maik. "Previously, my production data had to be downloaded to a usB memory stick or printed from the machine, but now

I can access this data from the comfort of my office."

aN iNTeRNeT connection is of course required, but no additional software installa-tion is necessary.

"I'm especially surprised at the versatility of the new system. I get an accurate over-view of important parameters such as fuel consumption and processing and mainte-nance times, providing me with all the facts."

An additional function was introduced in April. When requested, the system will

create the reports of your choice at regular intervals and automatically send them via e-mail to the specified e-mail address. This means, for example, that the client always has access to the current processing status. The system also includes an iPhone app that delivers important machine and production information right to your cell phone.

Maik hasn't yet decided which machine will replace his valmet 820. "But Maxifleet will most certainly be on the shortlist," says Maik.

maNy New features for popular head

The koMaTsU 365 was launched back in 2009 and has since become a popular harvesting head in many parts of the world. The Komatsu 365.1 is an updated version that now features even better feeding, measuring, and delimb-ing.

The feed rollers have a new inge-nious design that ensures the trunk is centered and carried better than before. The new feed rollers even save fuel as the head can be operated with lower clamping pressure compared to previ-ous roller models.

The head also has a feed roller in the head's feed path, above the frame roller. This provides more points of con-tact between the trunk and the head, which means a stronger feed. The de-sign of the delimbing knives also con-tributes to better lifting capacity and trunk handling. The knives are cast for better durability. The cast measuring wheel arm is not only more durable, it also contributes to increased measure-ment accuracy.

ToGeTheR wiTh oRyx simulations, Komatsu forest has developed three new simulators for harvesters, forwarders, and forestry excavators. The new simulators provide more lifelike operation with im-proved graphics and more realistic physics.

simulators are often used for gaining ex-tensive experience before starting to oper-ate real machines and, as such, operating a simulator must be as close to operating the real thing as possible.

The training program in the simulator takes the operator through basic training to full operation in the forest. Different ex-ercises train precision in crane operation in preparation for operating a real machine in the forest. In order to make things easier for the instructor, a student system is now in-cluded to keep track of users and their use of the simulators. The instructor can easily follow a student's development from a sep-arate workstation.

iN The New simulators, the machines behave exactly as they do in the forest. The physics are more realistic, affecting, for ex-ample, how the harvesting head behaves when coming into contact with trees and

What's more, despite the low energy consumption of just 43 watts they achieve a luminous flux of 3000 lumen.

bRUCe has been logging for more than 40 years. As a young man, he started out as a hand cutter and enjoyed the physical and mental challenge of hard work—these traits have earned Bruce respect among his peers and serve him well as owner of Black Lake Timber.

for the past 28 years, Bruce and his wife, Linda, have grown a successful contract cutting business, which now serves the area’s large mill customers. Black Lake Tim-ber began as a hand cutting operation and late in the1980s it joined the industry trend

The payoff is evident by the longevity Bruce gets from his equipment. The com-pany doesn’t employ a mechanic or have a shop. Each feller buncher operator takes care of regular maintenance and minor re-

pairs. Bruce’s local Komatsu dealer, Mod-ern Machinery, provides parts and handles more complicated service needs. This strong relationship allows Bruce to focus on what his company does best.

Black Lake Timber operates four Timbco/valmet and Komatsu branded feller bunch-ers. These include a 475fx and cab-leveling 475fxL, 450fxL and xT450-L models. The company runs three machines continuously. Bruce fills in as needed 

Bruce says, “Over the year’s we’ve owned quite a few Timbco, valmet and now,

the newer Komatsu machines. We’re finding the 450 model is sized for our current jobs and will be ideal in the future. We will add another xT450-L later this year.”

The xT450-L is now Komatsu’s largest purpose-built feller buncher. Customers like the independent closed-loop track drives, which provide superior multi-function per-formance. This allows an operator to travel, reach, cut and swing  simultaneously with-out compromising machine performance. The xT450-L also features massive leveling sys-tem components and has additional carbody

with customized 24-inch hot saws that have full head rotation. Bruce believes his head setup is perfectly matched to each of his machines boom and hydraulic capacity. The 24-inch cutting capability also handles the majority of the tree diameters found in their cut settings.

The Two New heads are refined versions of a well-proven design that has resulted in high reliability and effective production.

The feed is an important factor regard-less of the head. Both heads have refined feeds. On the C93, the frame roller is cen-tered and set higher up, which means the head traces the trunk closely. As such, the C93 handles crooked trees very well.

The C144 oFFeRs an optional fourth feed roller set in the head's feed path, above the frame roller, linked by a drive segment. The advantage is that this provides more points of contact between the trunk and the head, which means a stronger feed. This is most noticeable with broad diameter trees and crowns that are difficult to delimb. The feed system provides not only a fast feed, but also good lifting capacity.

Another new feature is that the felling link now has a tilt angle of 40 degrees. This provides a fast feed start. What's more, the paint tanks have been moved from the fell-ing link to improve visibility.

The new saw motor means, just like the bar mount, high reliability and improved productivity, mostly through stable cutting.

The saw motor provides consistent cutting speed for the chain because the feed speed is automatically adjusted to the chain's felling capacity, continuously throughout the cutting process. The saw unit keeps consistent speed, an optimized 130 feet per second (40 m/s), throughout the entire cutting cycle.

To attain a more consistent cutting speed, the hydraulics that guide and control the cutting process have been moved from the valve assembly to the saw motor. This also simplifies and reduces maintenance of the valve assembly.

Maxixplorer 3.1 is largely compliant with stanforD 2010. Production reports and op-erational monitoring, as well as control of the harvester's crosscutting, are implemented.

1. PRoDUCTioN CoNTRoLstanforD 2010 includes a number of messages to control harvester and forwarder production via instructions sent to the machine from an office computer or a business system. stanforD 2010 separates the different types of control data from each other so that only a small part of the full instructions needs to be re-sent if production conditions change during a logging assignment. Objects, tree spe-cies, and products (assortments), for example, are defined in sepa-rate files. This makes the system more flexible than the older system in which completely new crosscutting instructions have to be sent out if a change is to be made concerning, for example, the products to be produced.

2. PRoDUCTioN RePoRTsProduction reporting from the harvester is per log, which provides great opportunities to present and analyze production based on very specific contractor or client preferences. This structure also opens the way for future reporting of every stem online. The detailed harvester information also provides a basis for forecasting forest fuel availability and calculating product properties such as density, heartwood content, and knot structure. stanforD 2010 also intro-duces a message for reporting back geographic information. In the case of forwarders, every single or partial load is reported.

3. qUaLiTy assURaNCe aND CaLibRaTioN

In order to ensure that the harvester and forwarder measure length, diameter, and weight correctly, stanforD 2010 includes procedures for quality assurance. In the case of harvesters, the operator mea-sures a number of randomly selected logs and compares the results with the machine's measurements. An indepen-dent auditor who regularly conducts checks can be linked to the system. In the case of forwarders, the operator checks the equipment that weighs each load. Messages concerning the quality assurance of the measurement systems of harvesters and forwarders also include data for calibrating those systems.

4. oPeRaTioNaL MoNiToRiNGIn stanforD 2010, operational monitoring separates the operator and the machine and is independent of the current logging assignment. One advantage of not tying operational monitoring in with individual assignments is that this avoids breaks in time series data when the machine is switched from one assignment to another and then back again. This enables the calculation of relevant key figures and the comparison of machine systems and ma-chine groups by analyzing production and downtime during different time series.

FaCTs: sTaNFoRDstanforD 2010 is the forest industry standard for managing data sent to and from forest machines. The standard is global. stanforD 2010 is the updated version of the stanforD standard that has been in use since the end of the 1980s. The name is taken from the development work, as one of the ob-jectives was to complete the new stan-dard by 2010.

The Maxixplorer 3.1 control system also includes a number of new features concern-ing, for example, crosscutting, reporting, fuel-efficient operation, crane control, and head control.

Two new functions are Economy mode and Power mode, which enable the op-erator to set the machine's handling char-acteristics for maximum fuel economy or maximum performance with the push of a button. The operator can also configure how Economy mode works.

Maxixplorer 3.1 boasts a new system for creating crosscutting instructions in the har-vester. The new function for creating cross-cutting instructions is more user-friendly and has a number of additional features, such as displaying all matrices in the same view and removing fields that are seldom used to make the crosscutting instructions easier to comprehend.

Another new function is flexCut, which makes it possible to combine value-opti-

mized and length-optimized crosscutting in the same crosscutting instructions.

Maxixplorer 3.1 has new head control functions for certain head models. A few examples are improved braking before cut-ting and dampened end positions for the forward knives, both of which contribute to lengthening the head's service life.

Another smart function is extra clamp-ing when the feed starts, which can re-place pulse opening for certain diameters and provide better trunk grip. What's more, Maxixplorer 3.1 has a number of new smart functions for multi-tree accumulation.

When it comes to crane control, there is, for instance, a new function to rapidly adjust crane speed on forwarders and harvesters. This makes is easier to adapt the speed of the crane to the situation at hand.

Maxixplorer 3.1 offers a new type of re-port that forest companies and clients can use to gather reports from machine opera-tors. This is a report that includes, for ex-ample, environmental considerations, the condition of roads and landings, or the use of consumables such as diesel and oil, in a standardized yet flexible manner.

“In most growth markets, initially there’s a need for used forwarders,” Jari Alahuthala explains. “This has also been the case in Russia, but now increasing numbers are discovering that harvesters are highly com-petitive compared to hand cutting with chainsaws.”

The machines are sold via dealers in dif-ferent parts of Russia. The dealers are also responsible for service, maintenance, and spare parts.

“It’s important that we have a capable organization that can support the custom-ers that choose to buy used machines from us, even if there is great understanding in

Russia that you can’t always be near a ser-vice provider when you enter new areas,” says Jari. “We can also help customers and dealers import the machines they them-selves find in Europe into Russia.”

In Russia, all logging is final logging. This means a primary interest in medium and large sized machines. Great distances also mean high load-capacity forwarders are an advantage.

“The Komatsu 890 is in great demand, and the 941 is also a popular machine in Russia,” says Jari.

“Delivering used machines to growth markets is not only good for mechanization, it’s also good for contractors in mature mar-kets as used machine prices are kept high,” says Jari.

JoNas skyTTMo runs the company skyttmos skogsentreprend in Östersund, at the edge of the swedish alpine region. he started his business back in 1986, and it has slowly expanded since then. Today, he has 13 employees and eight red machines.

"We work with final logging during the winter season and even ground preparation during the summer season," he explains.

"Ground preparation is some of the toughest work you can subject a forwarder to, and over the years the Komatsu 890 has met the challenge," says Jonas.

he took delivery of his new Komatsu 895 in January, but hasn't yet done any final log-ging.

"It's a truly large forwarder that has ful-filled all my expectations so far," he says.

The new Komatsu 895 is really a com-pletely new 20-ton forwarder, even if it's based on well-proven technology. One ex-ample is the new sturdy chassis design and power train. The shape of the frame, the high-tensile steel of the underside of the rear frame, and the bogie's portal design provide very good ground clearance and cope well with obstacles.

"My experience from the earlier Komatsu 890 is that it's very fuel efficient and I be-lieve the new 895 can reduce fuel costs to an even lower level," says Jonas.

The new crane on the Komatsu 895 is large, reliable, and de-livers high lifting and slewing torque. It also has a new, durable slewing motor with a highly reliable pillar solution.

"I find that the new crane performs really well, and it certainly doesn't limit operation in any way," says Jonas.

The Cab eNViRoNMeNT is another important aspect. The Komatsu 895 has a brand new cab, which is more spacious in all directions. What's more, both side and upward visibility have been improved.

"It feels like a more comfortable cab with considerably better visibility," says Jonas. "This cab reinforces all the advantages of a fixed rather than a rotating cab."

The eNTiRe iNVesTMeNT was, how-ever, carefully considered for a long time. Contractor Antti Ahola is 43 years old and has worked as a machine contractor in this area for half his life. Collaboration with Metsähallitus, which manages the finnish state-owned forests, has made it easier for him to decide to invest. As Metsähallitus is

a state enterprise, unlike many private forest companies it enters long-term contracts. A contract usually lasts for four years.

"This provides more stable grounds for investments. During that period, the ma-chines can be operated for 12,000–15,000 hours. After that, it's time to consider the next tendering process and whether to sub-

In the area where Metsähallitus' team for Central Ostrobothnia works, a machine must be effective at final logging trees larg-er than 17.5 cubic feet (0.5 m3) and equally effective at harvesting pulpwood from trees measuring 1.75 cubic feet (0.05 m3). The stands marked for felling are widespread, pushing the decision toward a larger har-vester. Antti has good reasons for his choice.

"We thin with 65 feet (20 m) between strip roads. This means the crane's reach of 36 feet (11 m) provides greater efficiency

and reduces ground damage. The crane's last 3 feet (1 m) of reach – the most expen-sive – is seldom needed. The machine's mo-bility and ground clearance, combined with the crane's movement geometry and excep-tional maneuverability, result in increased production."

Antti often returns to the easily maneu-vered crane on the new Komatsu 911.5 – he even calls the machine operators to be sure he's got things right.

"Yes, it's true. They also mention the ro-tating cab, the best visibility, and then the automation that allows the operator to focus on the important matter of tree selection when thinning. The automation offers the operator mini breaks and, what's more, it speeds the work."

The MaChiNes woRkiNG FoR

Metsähallitus are used all year round. Ko-neurakointi A. Ahola Ky uses another ma-

chine set-up to fell trees used for biomass energy. for this work, they cooperate with L&T Biowatti Oy. The machine used for bio-mass, the valmet 840 s2, is a legendary forwarder for soft ground and complements the Komatsu 865 when the ground starts to thaw.

Antti's contracting company works with, among other things, road construction, log-ging, and clearing. In practice, this means he seldom has the opportunity to climb into the cab of a forest machine. When he is in the forest, he uses the time to train his organiza-tion, which is always about improving qual-ity. Antti believes that the operators' pro-fessional expertise is the company's most important asset next to the machines and cost efficiency. he believes that measure-ment and crosscutting work well due to the easy-to-use calipers supplied with the new machine. Antti has extensive experience of

the Komatsu 350 harvesting head – this one is his third.

"It has many application areas. At our latitude, the machine can be used for ev-erything from initial thinning to final logging. What's more, it measures accurately and is tough. It's the best one so far," Antti assures us.

New TRaiNiNG CeNTeR iN RUssiaKomatsu forest has opened a new train-ing center for forest machine operators in Divnogorsk, in the Krasnoyarsk Territory of central Russia. In collaboration with Divno-gorsk forestry College, modern operator training is now offered in the region. Certi-fied operator training is available for both harvesters and forwarders. The course combines theory and practice in the op-eration of modern Komatsu machines and simulators. Komatsu forest also contrib-utes with skills development and technical equipment.
