AFTER A LONG PERIOD of recession in the European market following the Greek debt crisis, we are finally start-ing to see more activity in the forest and better sales figures, two factors that suggest the beginnings of a recovery in Europe's forest industry. I expect a gradual recovery in Europe's forest in-dustry as the economy improves.

As for other parts of the world, the Russian market has been quite active, supported by a steady mechanization trend and much willingness to invest.

In Brazil, market activity is driven by the strong pulp export industry. In Oceania, the market has recovered strongly and is now enjoying one of the best business environments in its history following a long recession. The North American market is also recover-ing thanks to strong demand linked to housing construction.

OVERALL, I believe the global forest machine market is currently recovering, but at a slow rate, much dependent on what is happening in markets such as China, Indonesia, India, and Russia.

Even if a cloud of uncertainty still veils the global market, our focus on – and passion for – product development remains. As does our desire to listen to customers. A good example of our fo-cus is the new Komatsu 845 forwarder, the most versatile machine for thinning in most European environments. Our newly designed engine, based on well-proven technology, will be installed in the 845 to meet the Tier 4 Final emis-

sion regulations, which come into effect in 2014.

Another important focus area is helping our customers sustain profit-able operations. To this end, a well-es-tablished service network is something we continue to develop everywhere our customers are found. Parallel to this, we invest heavily in new information and communication technology (ICT) to provide our customers with both faster and better support alongside our con-tinuous efforts to improve spare parts availability, shorten delivery times, and improve service capacity.

One example of ICT use is MaxiFleet, which visualizes all operations-related forest activity and automatically sends the reports customers need to run prof-itable businesses.

I BELIEVE that visualizing what is hap-pening in logging operations in the form of a report is an important first step. Now we need to progress to the even more important second step, to take ac-tions for future Kaizen – or continuous improvement – activities.

Based on the visualized data from the logging site, Komatsu Forest personnel will work together with customers to improve machine availability and opera-tor performance by utilizing the recently introduced ProAct 2.0 service program. In short, ProAct 2.0 is a service program that involves preventative ac-tions to preempt failure and downtime, thereby improving productivity pro-actively.

Daniel Englund has test-driven the new Komatsu 845. We can sum up his initial thoughts as impressed.

"I'm impressed. It meets all my expectations for a forwarder in this class," he says.

was first presented at Elmia Wood in June with the prototype attracting a lot of atten-tion.

Throughout the latter part of the summer, forwarder operator Daniel Englund from contractor Bröderna Englund AB test-drove the new forwarder in forests around Åsele in northern Sweden.

"We've done a great deal of thinning in pretty difficult terrain and my overall im-pression is very positive," says Daniel.

The Komatsu 845 has a new frame de-sign with an underside that better facilitates mobility and the 26.5" wheels ensure high ground clearance and low ground pressure.

"We've driven up, down, and across

steep inclines and I find driving perfor-mance good," Daniel continues.

The hydrostatic transmission system also contributes to the improved mobility. The system responds quickly as driving condi-tions change depending on terrain, obsta-cles, inclines, and load weight.

"It's a powerful machine that continues pulling up long inclines without the need to floor the pedal," Daniel explains.

Crane operation is important when thinning. The Komatsu 845 has a brand new crane, the 105F, with improved geo-metry and a new compact combi outer boom.

ProTec link comes as standard. The in-ternal hose routing ensures hosing and hy-

draulics are well protected when thinning in dense stands.

"Even though I didn't adjust any settings, the crane felt very responsive. Lifting power is also good, and the reach felt very long," he says.

Daniel is very pleased with the bunk on the Komatsu 845.

"It's very flexible. You can quickly and easily change the bunks from full to narrow width and I think the FlexGate solution pro-vides even better visibility," he says.

The cab environment is another impor-is another impor-tant aspect that Daniel wishes to emphasize when it comes to forwarding. "I must say that visibility is very good all around and the cab interior feels bigger," he says.

THE KOMATSU 845 easily maneuvers dif-ficult terrain. One explanation is the frame's underside, which is designed to enhance mobility. Paired with the 26.5" wheels, ground clearance is high and ground pressure is low.

Another explanation is the hydrostatic transmission system, which optimizes power output. The system quickly adapts as the load changes depending on the terrain, ob-stacles, inclines, and crane loads.

Yet another explanation is the four-cylinder 4.9-liter (300 cu in) engine with high torque at low engine speeds. The engine complies with the tough environmental requirements of Euromot Stage IV/EPA Tier 4 Final that come into effect in 2014.

The crane on the Komatsu 845 has a long

reach. It has a combi outer boom with a Pro-Tec link and internal hose routing that pro-tects hydraulic hoses when thinning in dense stands.

But the Komatsu 845 is more than strong and nimble. Crane operation is equally im-portant when forwarding, and the crane on the Komatsu 845 is fast and efficient. High flow and larger capacity hydraulic lines on the crane ensure the speed is there when need-ed. Crane performance is further enhanced by the outer boom's 4-point link. Combined with the MaxiXplorer 3.1 control system, this is a highly productive crane.

The operator environment is another im-portant aspect of efficient forwarding. The cab of the Komatsu 845 is quiet and spa-

cious. It has great panoramic visibility, includ-ing overhead views. Improved cab isolation mounting minimizes vibration and a sound shield prevents engine noise from entering the cab. The cab has an ergonomically de-signed seat developed specially for forest machines. The bunk on the Komatsu 845 is marked by capacity and flexibility. One ex-ample is the FlexGate feature, which moves up and down if the crane strikes it. FlexGate is an innovative solution that is appreciated by operators. Aside from greater protection, FlexGate also provides better visibility. The load area is optimized for thinning. The bunk is height and width-adjustable, and can be adapted to strip road width and the length and density of the timber.

Improved visibility. The cab has large windows all around. The side supports are positioned farther back and upward visibility is considerably better.

New crane. Long reach, up to 9.5 m (31'2"). The combi outer boom with a ProTec link and internal hose routing protects hosing and hydraulics when thinning in dense stands.

traction and a larger bunk delivers higher productivity.

The power train features refined compo-nents to stand up to the forwarder's added traction. The bogie axles now have a rein-forced differential and dual bogie bearings. What's more, the Komatsu 855.1's transmis-sion provides higher gearing than its prede-cessor the Komatsu 855.

DUE TO THE new bogie axles the rear frames have been updated with suitable bogie stops. The new dual bearings on the bogie axles also increase the distance between the wheels and the frame by 33 mm (1.3”) on both sides, providing more space for bogie tracks.

The new Komatsu 855.1 has a new higher capacity bunk, a new frame structure, and improved traction.

HIGH PRODUCTIVITY is an important characteristic of any forest machine, for-warder or harvester. Consequently, this is a prioritized area in our work with continual improvements.

THE NEW KOMATSU 855.1 features im-provements that focus on improving perfor-mance and load capacity to deliver greater

productivity, as well as more robust compo-nents for increased reliability.

The Komatsu 855.1 boasts a bunk with a 14-tonne (15.4 ton) load capacity. It mea-sures 4.5 m² (48.4 sq ft) in order to utilize the full load capacity.

LEESON LOGGING is a company based in the small town of Rosedale, about 125 miles (200 km) east of Melbourne.

"Our business involves highly mecha-nized logging, loading, and transporting timber to the mills," Ricky Leeson explains.

Ricky manages operations at Leeson Logging. He's responsible for all contracts being completed on time and to specifica-tion. Leeson Logging recently expanded

AUSTRALIA

There are two primary types of production forest in the Australian state of Victoria. The first are state-owned natural broad-leaved forests and the second are privately-owned plantations with both indigenous Australian broad-leaf trees and planted Monterey pine trees. Both are harvested industrially and the timber is used for a number of wood products, from first class saw timber to lower quality pulpwood.

WHEN YOU’RE ON A GOOD THING, STICK TO IT

and extended its contracts with Hancock Victorian Plantations, increasing its volume from 240,000 to almost 450,000 tonnes per year – in addition to the 70,000 tonnes per year the company is contracted to harvest and transport from Hamilton to Maryvale.

"We recently won a contract for clear-cutting pine on flatter land, but also in some steep terrain, and for clear-cutting euca-lyptus forests. We expanded our machine

lineup for steep terrain, which complements our other thinning assignments for pine and ash, as well as clear-cutting eucalyptus in steep territory. What's more, we bought ad-ditional machines for the two clear-cutting assignments in steep terrain and the euca-lyptus job on easier ground," Ricky explains.

The terrain varies a great deal from flat to steep, with different ground conditions such as sand and mud. The broad-leaf planta-

tions are planted with 400 trees per acre (1,000 trees per hectare) and are clear-cut after about 12 to 14 years. At that age, the average trunk size is about 0.2 m³ (7 cu ft).

No thinning takes place during this phase. The Monterey pine plantations are planted with 570 trees per acre (1,400 trees per hectare). They are thinned initially after 12 to 14 years, a second time at 20 years, and then finally clear-cut after 26 to 28 years. By the clear-cutting stage, the aver-age trunk size is 1.2 to 1.4 m³ / 1.2 to 1.4 (42 to 50 cu ft / 1.3-1.5) tons in weight (tonnes in weight).

WHEN LOOKING FOR new machines for these contracts, Leeson Logging wanted to work with a single supplier that could offer the best solution for its business.

"We've long had a good relation with Komatsu Forest. Previously, we had 14 ma-chines, all from Komatsu, from a 921 har-vester with 25,000 hours of operation to an 890.3 forwarder with 1,500 hours of opera-tion. Following the changes, we now have 16 machines, all from Komatsu," Ricky says.

According to Ricky, Komatsu Forest of-fered the best complete solution.

"They deliver very reliable quality ma-

chines and provide support and service when breakdowns do occur. They're going to expand their service and support to suit the machines we've just bought."

LEESON LOGGING also has in-house service mechanics who have worked with Komatsu machines and received training from Komatsu Forest, which has cemented relations with Komatsu's service mechan-ics.

The equipment chosen for the two steep clear-cutting jobs is an XT450L with a 398 head and an 895 forwarder. For the euca-lyptus job with easier ground conditions, the company chose a PC200 customized for forestry and a specially-built 378E harvest-

ing head for broad-leaf trees. A PC220 with a regular 378E head was also purchased.

"We chose these units because they were cheaper than other machines on the market. We studied the equipment both in the field and in their workshop in Albury to be sure we'd be happy with them," Ricky explains.

AFTER THE TRIP, Ricky was confident that Komatsu Forest was the right choice.

"The machines are high quality with good fuel economy and high reliability, and as I've said the support is first class. The machines are also very user friendly and we haven't had any negative response from the operators," he says.

At present, all the new harvesters are performing as expected.

"We had a few teething problems in the beginning, but when you commission four new harvesters in a six-week period things can easily get a little hectic. They deserve all praise for delivering the machines as quickly as they did, especially as they were ordered in April and the first one was deliv-ered at the end of May. We even ordered two 895 forwarders, one of which has been commissioned and the other is due for de-livery at the end of August. That machine also operates well," Ricky concludes.

6-WHEELED KOMATSU 895The Komatsu 895, the true 20-tonner, is now available with six wheels. Serial production began on September 1 and it's already proven a success, especially in South America. The 6-wheeled forwarder has a brand new sturdy axle designed for a true 20-tonner. Six-wheeled forwarders are in demand as an alternative in markets with primarily even ground or where there's a desire for less ground impact when turning the machine.

NEW FRONT BLADEThe new forwarders have a new front blade that out-shines market competition. The lifting angle is so high that a forwarder with a front blade can be used with minimum impact on obstacle clearance, which is useful when driving across hollows and in dips. The front blade also has a reliable construction and is easily detached. The arms are designed to store hoses and other equip-ment.

FUEL-EFFICIENT DRIVINGWith a simple push of a button you can now ensure that you drive a little more fuel efficiently. The eco-driving function in the new MaxiXplorer 3.1 is a powerful tool that helps the operator adjust ma-chine settings to optimize fuel consump-tion. MaxiXplorer 3.1 has an "Economy mode" which when used correctly under suitable conditions can reduce fuel con-sumption. With a button on the control panels of the Komatsu Comfort Controls you can easily switch between Econo-my mode for fuel-efficient driving and Power mode for maximum performance. Economy mode comprises a number of settings that can help with overall fuel savings, the amount of which depend on external factors, such as incline, ground conditions, and driving style.

BETTER AND GREENER VISIBILITYThe new LED headlights are ideal for forest machines as LED technology is particularly suited to professional use. LED headlights provide rapid and bright lighting with very low energy consumption. LED headlights are part of the environmental adaptation of products as the lighting technology used in LED headlights doesn't contain mercury.

GATE WITH NEW DESIGNFlexGate is a new gate based on a unique patented design. The FlexGate flexes out of the way when making contact with the crane, protecting both the gate and the crane, and as such the gate has been de-signed to offer much better visibility from the cab to the bunk. FlexGate is available for the Komatsu 895 and the Komatsu 845.

NEW BRAKE LINK FOR CRANE TIPThe Komatsu MDB (Multi Disk Brake) is a new brake link developed to increase the performance of the existing link and brake system. With MDB all harvesters (except the Komatsu 941.1) offer a uniform interface between the crane and the head. The link can be supplied without brake disks or with the customer's preferred number of brake disks, a maximum of two up and two down.

NEW HYDRAULIC PUMPA new larger hydraulic pump ensures that the hy-draulic oil flow is always sufficient for maximum production. An added benefit is improved multi-function performance. The new hydraulic pump is available for the Komatsu 911.5 and 931.1.

KOMATSU forwarder bunks offer con-figurable flexibility to match job conditions. A flexible bunk means you can always op-timize the load capacity in relation to trac-tion regardless of the type of load. LoadFlex allows the operator to widen the bunk. The new FlexBunk offers both height and width adjustments, options that provide a more flexible forwarder bunk.

WIDER TIRESAs part of efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our machines and to meet customer needs, 800 mm (31.5”) wide tires are now available for the Komatsu 855.1 and the Komatsu 865. Wider tires distribute the machine's weight over a larger area, thereby reducing ground pressure.

MAXIMUM PRODUCTIVITY can only be achieved with a machine that is functioning properly. The key to an optimally function-ing machine is to approach maintenance, service, and spare parts with foresight.

Acting with foresight entails careful planning and systematic service work. The idea is to do as much as possible to avoid emergency repairs, which may then entail waiting for spare parts. It's simply a case of regularly checking your machine and con-ducting the maintenance that makes for-est machine ownership safer, simpler, and more profitable.

With thorough preventative inspec-tions – primarily of the machine's essential components – conducted at regular inter-vals, much unnecessary downtime can be

avoided. One example of preventative ser-vice is to replace high-wear parts before they fail. Planned downtime, rather than a breakdown, saves both time and money. What's more, a failed hydraulic component can also cause collateral damage.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE is oil analysis, which should be conducted at regular intervals. The results of the analysis reveal not only any contamination, but also the quality of the oil and, for example, any trace of water. This enables the maximum interval between oil changes while providing peace of mind that nothing unexpected will happen.

Proactive planned service saves time and money.

Since a great deal of service and repairs

are conducted in the forest, a planned ser-vice approach requires careful planning and logistics.

Many emergency service truck callouts can be avoided. One can, for example, plan service for when the service trucks are near-by on other assignments, ensure that impor-tant spare parts are always available onsite, or book service in conjunction with relocat-ing the machines for another assignment.

OPERATOR TRAINING is another area where one can learn about a preventative approach. Familiarity with the control sys-tem to ensure the right settings are used and knowledge of the latest software for following up service and maintenance work are also important for profitability.

Productivity, high uptime, and low running costs. That's what all forest machine owners want. The best way to achieve this is to be proactive in your day-to-day work with service and spare parts.


NEW AID FOR MORE PLANNED SERVICEProAct 2.0 is a new service concept that entails an individually-tailored service agreement. This means that every ProAct agreement is formulated according to the customer's unique needs. With preventative service and maintenance rather than emergency measures, ProAct 2.0 reduces unplanned downtime.

PROACT 2.0 is a service package com-prised of four important components. The first component is planned inspections to monitor a machine between scheduled ser-vices. This enables you to predict the need for service and necessary spare parts, thereby avoiding unplanned downtime for repairs while maximizing machine uptime.

THE SECOND component is scheduled service, which allows downtime to be planned according to the contractor's work schedule. This enables you to avoid unwel-come production stops. Here, a completely new field stock of spare parts customized to each contractor's individual needs and stored nearby can play an important role in daily preventative maintenance.

THE THIRD COMPONENT involves cus-tomized training adapted to each contrac-tor's unique circumstances. A major help in training are the new simulators, with a strong focus on methodology training and the production data generated by the Maxi-Fleet planning system.

THE FOURTH COMPONENT is regular fol-low-ups. Follow-ups are best accomplished using MaxiFleet, with which you can eas-ily and directly monitor a machine and its

production, and can quickly see where all machines in a group are currently located. MaxiFleet automatically manages the in-formation flow from the forest machines, which makes planning machine service and maintenance considerably easier. All of this information can be used to determine when preventative service and maintenance are needed. You can also receive remote tech-nical support via MaxiFleet. Another appli-cation area is analyzing the need to change machine settings. Two-way communication with the machines enables machine set-tings to be changed remotely.

CHECKLIST THE KEY TO SUCCESS

THE WORD PROACTIVE comes from Latin and means to act in advance. The idea of an agreement for preventative service is not new, but the ProAct agreement is brand new.

"We want to keep the uptime of our ma-chines as high as possible as this is the only way our customers can make a profit in the long run," says Rainer Schairer, Service Manager for Komatsu Forest in Germany.The basic idea behind preventative service is to replace parts before they fail. In the aviation industry, for example, this strategy

However, this also requires that the machines receive care, maintenance, and professional service. Now there is a new service concept that can be individually tailored to each machine's use. One of the first to embrace the ProAct 2.0 service concept is German contractor Gerald Wagner.

CHECKLIST THE KEY TO SUCCESS

has long been in use. Components related to flight safety are inspected and replaced in accordance with a set schedule. Komatsu Forest has chosen a similar route for its new ProAct 2.0 service agreement.

PREVIOUSLY, service was generally con-ducted at intervals of 500 hours of op-eration. If we assume 40 working hours a week, in practice this means a machine is inspected by a mechanic only four times a year. That's not much if you consider that on average there are 250 work days a year dur-ing which the machine is exposed to rough treatment in the forest. When service inter-vals are so long, even small problems can have major consequences. If, for example, a supply line in the crane's central lubrication system is damaged, no lubricant will reach the hard-pressed bushing. If this damage is not discovered early on, it may already be too late to repair the bearings. The result is that the original minor repair to a supply line now becomes an expensive and time-consuming repair.

"We've noticed that small components are often forgotten if there's no appropriate checklist," says Rainer.

Consequently, a team of technicians have compiled a checklist not unlike those used for aircraft. Based on the checklist, the tech-nician inspects the machine's components

one by one – from the diameter meter to the rearview camera. In this way,

no machine components are overlooked. The inspections are conducted regularly between scheduled maintenance. If short-comings are discovered, they are rectified immediately or later on as agreed. For Ger-ald Wagner, who has already participated in a field test of ProAct 2.0, the advantages are obvious.

"NATURALLY, my operators need to use the machines responsibly even with the Pro-Act agreement. And daily maintenance is also part of the plan. Reducing unplanned downtime makes the machines consider-ably more productive," says Gerald.The existing service interval is not affected and the oil is checked every 500 hours. The status report from the laboratory can help predict impending pump damage. If a worst case scenario arises, it's generally too late. Pump repairs can often entail the complete flushing of the system, which is an expen-sive measure.

An additional aid to preventative service is the new MaxiFleet system. In addition to

production and performance data, Maxi-Fleet presents details of each machine's status.

Error messages, for example, are regis-tered for later evaluation. If there's a problem with the machine's control system, a techni-cian can investigate matters via the remote access function. This means the machine owner can often avoid long and expensive travel time for service personnel.

Safety is also considered. The ProAct agreement includes an inspection of safety features. What's more, the annual statutory inspection of the AC unit is included on the ProAct checklist.

Gerald is particularly pleased that not only new machines can be covered by the ProAct service. Following an inspection, a used ma-chine can also be covered for ProAct main-tenance.

"I'm considering integrating my forwarder with the service agreement as well. Then my operators will be as productive as possible and I'll know that I'll always have machines in top-notch condition," says Gerald.

The Komatsu S132 is a reliable and flexible head developed to log the most challenging forests. The key is good trunk grip via automatic knife pressure, which ensures effective processing.

NEW RELIABLE ALL-AROUND HEAD

THE KOMATSU S132 is based on a well-proven, sturdy, and rugged design that re-sults in high reliability.

The head has two hydraulically-powered feed rollers. The dual-roller feed allows the trunks to twist in the head, even if they have crotches or are very crooked. The Komatsu S132 can be equipped with three different feed roller types. Two are designed for han-dling coniferous trees while the third model is designed for debarking eucalyptus.

The main difference between the feed rollers for coniferous trees is the level of ag-gressiveness.

This aggressiveness is reflected in the length of the teeth. Those for coniferous trees have a V-shaped design to prevent bark and wood chips from sticking in the feed rollers. The head has four moving de-limbing knives, of which three are hydrauli-cally controlled. The fourth moving knife is the vertical knife, which is fitted with a sen-

sor. This sensor controls the contact pres-sure of the other delimbing knives. The de-limbing knife controller produces the lowest possible friction between the trunk and the head. This means the knife pressure is ad-justed throughout the entire feed cycle with minimal friction in the head without compro-mising the delimbing result. This minimizes friction and provides more power for feeding while reducing energy consumption.

THE KOMATSU S132 also has a fixed de-limbing knife positioned just above the saw box for delimbing trees with low-hanging limbs when contact is made.

The Komatsu S132 has a hydraulically-powered chain saw unit.

The saw unit can be equipped with either manual or automatic chain tensioning. The saw chain and the saw bar are automatically lubricated by a pump throughout the entire cutting cycle.

The new Komatsu S132 is a reliable head with well-positioned guards and hoods to protect components and hoses from dam-age.

THE HEAD IS ALSO SIMPLE to main-tain with easily accessible service points. The daily service can be conducted from a single position. This increases safety and minimizes service time. Smart hose routing and ORFS couplings on nearly all hydraulic hoses reduce the potential environmental impact from leaks and can lower hydraulic oil costs.

The head offers great versatility with op-tions that range from saw units and feed roll-ers to length and diameter measuring. The Komatsu S132 can also be equipped with a multi-tree accumulator and color marking. The head can be adapted for mounting on an excavator and can be further adapted for processing.

A FEW NEW FEATURES: DIAMETER MEASURING.

The head can be equipped with two different types of diameter measur-ing. As standard, the diameter is measured in the attachment arms of the feed rollers using a pulse sensor. The head can also be equipped with a four-point measuring system for in-creased accuracy.

The knives are cast, which means increased durability, and have a new design that enables them to delimb in different or-ders, which improves delimbing on species that are notoriously difficult to delimb.

FEED ROLLERSA new feed roller design improves trunk grip and centering, which in turn provides a more effective feed and thereby higher productivity. The new design enables a re-duction in clamping pressure in the head, which also reduces energy requirements.

THE NEW CONSTANT CUT saw unit in-cludes a new saw motor and a new, stable bar mount. The saw unit has been refined when it comes to attachment to both the chassis and the saw bar. The result is even higher reliability. Just as with the saw bar mount, the new Constant Cut saw motor means higher reliability, but also significant-

ly better productivity. Productivity is mainly increased by faster cutting and reduced maintenance needs. Stump treatment has been improved when it comes to operation-al reliability and function.

The new saw motor also delivers a more even cutting speed for the chain because the feed speed is automatically adjusted

to the chain's felling capacity, continu-ously throughout the cutting process. With this new saw unit, the chain never runs too fast. With Constant Cut, a steady, optimal speed of 130 feet per second (40 m/s) can be maintained throughout the entire cut-ting cycle. To attain a more constant cutting speed, the hydraulics that guide and control the cutting process have been moved from the valve assembly to the saw motor. This also means less and simpler maintenance of the valve assembly and other hydraulic components in the head.

Constant Cut THE CONSTANT CUT SAW UNIT features a new saw motor and a new bar mount. Constant Cut delivers a constant 130 ft/s (40 m/s) chain speed, which increases pro-ductivity and minimizes the risks of chain shot and splitting.


FINLAND

After many years, Juha Kyllönen is well-acquainted with the Komatsu 901. "It's a safe and versatile machine, stable even at extreme reaches, has a full-circle slewing and leveling cab – it suits our harvesting style."

Thinning younger stands is primarily a silvicultural measure, but is still naturally subject to the same economic realities as any other harvesting job. Working on thinning assignments in dense stands demands great care for standing trees and the forest floor. Unfortunately, ground and trunk damage caused by mechanized thinning has increased in recent years, with several possible underlying reasons. In Finland, contractor Juha Kyllönen focuses on thinning and has invested in a new Komatsu C93 head for the purpose.

‘‘WE MUST SUCCEED EVERY TIME.’’

IN FINLAND, where thinning is on the in-crease, overall work quality is in the spot-light. Damage is unacceptable, but increased wood fuel harvesting during initial thinning has resulted in less protective brushwood on the ground, poor clearing up with reduced vis-ibility, and increasing numbers of thinning as-signments conducted in the dark, all of which present challenges. Yet another challenge

is that older machine lineups are not always adapted for thinning in dense stands. In Fin-land, thinning assignments are becoming the most important income source for many con-tractors. Just Forest visited machine owner Juha Kyllönen in eastern Finland. Juha's com-pany, Juha Kyllönen Ky, is investing heavily in thinning.

His primary client is a local forest owners'

association, which sells logging services to its forest-owning members.

"Ninety percent of our work is thinning, and half of that is initial thinning. What's more, the plots are small. We visit more than 100 for-est owners a year," says Juha about his work situation.

forest industry cluster is found within a 60-mile (100-km) radius and all timber assortments are in demand. The future looks bright. Now power stations are even taking delivery of wood fuel.

"As yet, wood fuel is not a major part of our operations. We seldom conduct any true wood fuel assignments. We do, however, more often clear forests around buildings, clear roadsides, widen power line corridors, and take care of plots destroyed by storms and insects. When the association sells log-ging services to forest owners, they always want to be able to monitor the results, to ensure quality criteria are met. Increasing numbers of forest owners are city dwellers and women, which means they have a very critical eye toward how the plot appears after logging," Juha explains.

Contractors who conduct the assign-the assign-ments have, for obvious reasons, direct con-tact with the forest owners, which heightens quality and performance requirements. Juha sums it up as follows:

"Today, we no longer strive for huge vol-umes. Instead, we want to deliver a good re-sult we can be proud of."

Two people paved the way for Juha's com-pany – his father Eino and his paternal uncle Aimo, who founded the company in the early 1960s. Eino began with harvesters more than 40 years ago. The first 901 was bought when Juha was little more than ten years old. Fif-teen years ago, he took over the company. The veterans still help out with the business. Aimo works when needed, while Eino has halved his work day to six or seven hours.

Juha says that feedback – and even criticism – is important in developing the business.

"Indirectly, the forest owners who buy ser-vices from the association pay our wages. It's important to know what they think of the qual-ity of our work. Their opinions provide a basis for our development."

The Komatsu 901 is one of the machines with the best technical specifications for deliv-ering good thinning results. Juha Kyllönen Ky has used Valmet/Komatsu harvesters for sev-eral decades. That experience paid off when discussing plans to purchase a new machine. The first machine after the large harvesters of the 1980s was a 940GP thinning processor. They now use a 350 head. The sales rep didn't really need to argue his point for the Komatsu 901, they were already on the same page:

"The 901 is a safe and versatile machine, stable even at extreme reaches, has a full-circle slewing and leveling cab – it suits our harvest-ing situation," Juha explains On the other hand, they have little experience with the new C93. However, the same reliability and good return on investment are what Juha expects of his new machine.


RUSSIAMECHANIZEDToday, nearly 700 Komatsu construction machines are used for harvesting operations around the world, mainly in South America and Indonesia. In order to meet the special demands of working in the forest, Komatsu has developed a special version of the renowned Komatsu PC200, known as the PC200F and where the F stands for forest. The Russian Federation is a region where mechanization in the forest industry – and in logging operations in particular – is actively ongoing. The PC200F will most certainly become a part of that process.

THE NEW KOMATSU PC200F is a custom-built excavator that could be said to be a symbiosis of Japanese production know-how and Scandinavian forestry experience for efficient forest technology. The new

machine for logging in Russia will be manu-factured at the plant in Yaroslavl (about 160 miles/250 km, south of Moscow).

Tim Bogatenko is Komatsu Forest’s Di-rector of Sales and Marketing in Russia.

“The Komatsu PC200 is a well-known machine in Russia and the forest version will feature special equipment that allows it to be customized to work as a harvester. This equipment includes an extender that helps move the machine, increased fire sa-fety measures, the Maxi control system for crosscutting and optimized machine opera-tion, additional lights for night work, and ad-ditional protection for the machine’s upper frame against occasional falling dry wood,” Tim explains.

In Russia, forests are frequently har-vested on soft ground, mainly from clearcut areas, and the Komatsu PC200F is a relati-vely heavy machine at 22 tons.

“The Komatsu PC200F is equipped with long and wide (27½”/700 mm) tracks, which help it cover soft ground well. In fact, soft ground isn’t much of a concern for the har-vester, since while processing the trees, the operator dumps residue in front of machine, right on the strip road, and moves slowly,” he continues.

The Komatsu PC200F will generally be equipped with a Komatsu 370E, a robust head with a sturdy frame. Customers will be able to order Komatsu “S” series type heads as of 2014.

The first Komatsu PC200F leaving the plant in Yaroslav will be equipped with a Komatsu 370E.

ling us to closely follow how the machine performs,” Tim adds.

Operator training is important when new machines are delivered in Russia, and Komatsu Forest has training centers in 12 regions of the country.

“Our partners in training are institu-tions with extensive training experience, and mainly comprise governmental or-ganizations.”

Even though the Komatsu PC200F is a simple and reliable machine, operator training is a necessity. Operators need to know how to take care of the machine as regards service and maintenance.

“Training will focus mainly on the fo-restry aspects – the Komatsu 370E har-vester head and the MaxiXplorer control system. Operators will also learn how to operate the machines effectively, economically, and with minimal envi-ronmental impact. Finally, there are

some special driving techniques for opera-ting an excavator in the forest.”

The first Komatsu machine delivered in the former Soviet Union was delivered in 1968 and the Komatsu brand is known to represent high quality and robust machines. With the Komatsu PC200F produced in Russia, and a well-established support net-work for Komatsu parts and service, Tim is confident the Komatsu PC200F will be well received by customers.

FACTS: RUSSIAN FORESTAlmost half of Russia’s land area, or 49.4 percent, are covered by forests. This is equivalent to over 800 million hectares, which means that Russia is the world’s largest forest country. The dominant tree species is pine.


RUSSIA – A COUNTRY WITH UNLIMITED FOREST RESOURCES Russia is known for its expansive territories and its extensive natural resources. Not unexpectedly, oil, gas, and minerals are most important to the country’s economy. However, the forests are gaining in importance.

MORE THAN 40 PERCENT of Russia’s land area is covered by natural forests. The total forest volume is 80 billion m3 (2,825 billion cubic feet), with an annual harvest of about 635 million m3 (22,425 million cubic feet). Due to the great distances and short-comings in the road network, financially viable forests are estimated to comprise only 367 million m3 (12,960 million cubic feet).

During the Soviet era, the actual har-vesting volume was closer to 350 million m3 (12,360 million cubic feet). Today, it is around 150 million m3 (5,300 million cubic feet). Clear-cutting is the most commonly used harvesting method in Russia. For thinning, they employ a method known as continuous cover forestry, which entails removing fully grown trees while leaving less mature trees standing.

The ground can be very swampy, and as such the logging companies often build broad wooden bridges, known as ”lezhny-ovka”, so that they can transport the logs from the plot to a better road. Harvesting methods can vary greatly between re-gions.

Normally, operators work in shifts, with machines operating 24/7. The work team lives in barracks in the forest for a week. The barracks are equipped with beds and workshops for basic repairs. After a week, another work team takes over.
