• Your new role as Freshman at The Citadel will bring this notion of being a follower to a whole new level!

Followership – A Definition
• To be a good follower:- Place the needs of others before your desires.
- Build a relationship of trust and loyalty between your leader and your team!

Followership and Leadership
All of the qualities of good followership and applications of followership are characteristics of effective servant leaders.

Fourth Class System –What is it?
• It is a system of requirements, traditional behaviors, duties, and expectations designed to promote this concept of followership.
• Governed by Cadet Regulations, “The Blue Book,” the Fourth Class System is one of the foundational aspects of The Citadel Experience.

Principles of the Fourth Class System
• All cadets will be treated with dignity and respect.
• All cadets, regardless of class, will accept personal responsibility for the fair, equitable, proper, and effective operation of the system.
• All cadets will implement the system in such a manner as to support each cadet's opportunity to achieve academic, military, physical, and moral-ethical excellence.
• No cadet will put another cadet in a position where he or she must compromise Citadel Core Values or disregard prescribed rules, regulations, or standards.

To provide new cadets with an understanding of The Citadel’s core values of Honor, Duty, and Respect.

• To develop personal character and create a foundation for honorable and ethical decision-making.
BEWARE of moral temptations associated with cutting corners, being a Spotlight Ranger, and misaligned loyalties.

• To instill new cadets with self-discipline.
• To physically challenge new cadets and establish a foundation of understanding the necessity of physical fitness for life.
• To instruct new cadets in time management.

• To inculcate class cohesion in support of The Citadel Missionand the development of Principled Leaders.

What you can expect from your cadet leaders
• Demonstrate a sense of accountability for those in their care; (i.e. you)
• Treat each other with dignity and respect;
• Operate within the rules and regulations, particularly Chapter Three of the Blue Book;
• Never put you in a position where you must compromiseCitadel Core Values or disregard prescribed rules, regulations, or standards.
