High School Science News

Physics students have just completed their study of Newton’s 1st and 2nd Laws of Motion. They are now beginning Newton’s 3rd Law of

Motion: Action – Reaction pairs. They will be

doing different activities which demonstrate

this law including building and launching

different styles and types of rockets! Students

will continue their mastery of Newton’s 2nd Law

in the form of the equation F=ma. Remember:

Practice makes Perfect!

Biology students have been studying

photosynthesis. We have been looking at the

chemical reaction of photosynthesis, where this

reaction occurs within the plant, and what the

byproducts of the reaction are. They have just

completed the light-dependent and light-

independent portion of photosynthesis. We have

looked at the Calvin Cycle and how it relates to

the light reactions. This next week we will begin

looking at glycolysis and cellular respiration.

Astronomy students are finishing up on the Life on Mars unit. Once we are done with that,

we will be moving on to the study of the solar

system in more detail. We will look at the

formation of the planets in our solar system –

their size, composition, relative location from

the Sun and orbital plane. We will talk about the

“Goldilocks Zone” and review what it takes for

life to survive on a planet. The students will do a

variety of activities during the study of the

solar system.

The astronomy students are still working on the

Aquaponics project. They have their system set

up and have plants growing! Their challenge now

is to get the system balanced so that all parts

are working together. Our biggest concern at

this point is the plants are not getting enough

light – the students will be constructing a

framework from which they will attach grow

lights to. The hope is that if the plants start to

grow better, it will help to balance out the

system.

Physical Science students have begun

studying work – how the definition of work

differs as it relates to physics. We will look at

two different types of energy: Kinetic energy

(energy of motion) and Potential energy (energy

of position). We will also look at how energy

relates to work. Students will do a variety of

activities to demonstrate the concepts of work

and energy.

Hot Wheels for MAPS Every student, K-6, was issued a ticket for every point they increased their MAPS score

from the previous year. At the completion of the MAPS testing we would choose 15 lucky winners. These winners were allowed to pick a Hot Wheels car from Mr.

Evetovich's ultra-special collection.

Walthill Public School is continually improving through our AdvancEd accreditation process. The

Teaching and Learning Standard is committed to analyzing and improving our school’s curriculum,

instructional design, and assessment practice guide. We also report teacher effectiveness and student

learning. We are fully accredited and we take pride in providing an education for your children. Student

success is one of our highest priorities. We are thankful to the parents, guardians, and community who

support our school. Challenges are met much easier because of the teamwork we have. Our school year

is in full swing and classrooms are busy, meeting all Nebraska State Standards, which have been

implemented in all core subjects. With your help, let’s work together to turn all of our good things into

great things!

Our team has been giving away baskets at the Parent’s Night Football game, and at the Parent’s Volleyball

games. We will be giving away baskets for both Girls and Boys Basketball games. This will be given out

during the Parent’s Night Basketball games. Thank you for all of the support of our student athletes.
