West Jackson Middle School Celebrates National FFA Week

Students, teachers, and staff at West Jackson Middle School celebrated National FFA Week from Monday, February 29th – Friday, March 4th. During this week long festivity, FFA members and supporters cel-ebrated with fun activities, FFA Awareness events, and community service projects. WJMS FFA also offered the FFA Week Homeroom Chal-lenge where homeroom clas-ses could compete for points each day by answering FFA trivia, participating in the dif-ferent dress up days, and do-nating cans of food for our can food drive.

Before National FFA Week, West Jackson Middle FFA Week Committee made plans to have a “Stuff the Bus” can food drive where the plan was to stuff a school bus with as many can food goods as possible. The plan was to collect can food items throughout FFA Week and donate all items to iServe Minis-tries at the end of the week. In order to get more involved in the community and neighbor-ing elementary schools, WJMS FFA challenged Gum Springs Elementary School, West Jackson Elementary, and North Jackson Elementary School to all donate to our cause. Each elemen-tary school was asked to take part in this en-

deavor, and, in turn, the school with the highest percentage raised will receive $500 to go to-

wards an agricultural edu-cation project at their school.

The FFA Week activities started on Monday with Super Hero Day! Students and staff were asked to dress as their favorite su-per hero! This was also the beginning of the FFA Week Homeroom Chal-lenge! FFA related trivia questions were given dur-ing the announcements and the homeroom that returned the correct an-swer the quickest was giv-

en 5 points! After school, members of the FFA Week Committee visited the after school pro-gram at West Jackson Elementary to talk with students about agricultural education and FFA at WJMS and complete a fun activity with them.

Staff and FFA Member Appreciation Day was on Tuesday, and FFA Officers prepared a pancake breakfast and served it to faculty and staff at WJMS. Also, FFA members were treated to breakfast in the Ag room. This was a small way to thank the staff members and FFA members for their support and participation throughout

the year. After school, FFA members enjoyed a Soup-er Community Service FFA meet-ing where they enjoyed differ-ent kinds of soup, had a lesson from WJMS FFA President Sa-vannah Van Buren about how to properly write a thank you note, wrote thank you notes to mem-bers of the community, and then worked to stuff the bus with the food items donated.

Wednesday was Blue and Gold

Day, and all faculty, staff, and students were encouraged to dress in as much blue and gold as possible. After school, members of the FFA Week Committee visited the after school program at North Jackson Ele-mentary to talk with students about agricul-tural education and FFA at WJMS and complete a fun activity with them. Thursday was Squad Day, and participants found a group (or their squad) to dress alike for the day. Some homerooms really took the squad idea to heart by creating their own tshirts or even planning to all dress alike.

Friday was the final day of FFA Week, and WJMS FFA started the day by bringing breakfast to the staff and drivers at the Jackson County Transportation Depart-ment. We wanted to thank them for always supporting us with our many trips and events throughout the year, and we specifically want-ed to thank them for letting us use a bus for such a long time during the stuff the bus can food drive. The FFA Week Committee mem-bers got together to present a check to Gum Springs Elementary School for winning the Stuff the Bus challenge! GSES collected over 2,800 food items, and be-tween Gum Springs Elementary, West Jackson Elementary and the homerooms at West Jackson Mid-dle, we collected over 5,400 food items! After school on Friday, WJMS FFA Advisor, April Davis, took the school bus from the Stuff the Bus can food drive and several

FFA members to deliver the can food items to iServe Ministries.

The 2016 FFA Week Celebration was jam packed with all kinds of events to get stu-dents, teachers, and the community in-volved in FFA activi-ties. The West Jackson Middle FFA Week Committee would like to thank everyone for participating in the

FFA Week festivities and donating to the com-munity service project!
