CEO’s Report

Dear Members,I hope everyone managed to get some downtime over Chistmas and is feeling energetic and excited for the New Year.On the 15th of December, Ian McCann and I joined the President’s and CeO’s of the other major clubs in our area to meet with NSW Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell and Opposition Shadow Minister for hospitality and Tourism George Souris. At the meeting we each signed a copy of a Memorandum

of Understanding (MoU) between the NSW Coalition and Clubs NSW. Under the terms of the MoU the rate of Gaming Machine Tax which clubs pay would be reduced in return for an increase in the mandatory level of funding provided to the community. As a club which already supports the community well in excess of the minimum requirements, Wenty Leagues will benefit from this proposed legislation should the Coalition win government as expected at the upcoming state election.Whilst there is some relief in sight on the State front, on a Federal level our future viability is still under significant threat due to the deal made between the Gillard Labor Government and Tasmanian Independent Andrew Wilkie in order to secure power. We have included further details of both the Gillard – Wilkie deal and the MoU overleaf and I encourage you to read the information provided. For all of our members whose New Year’s Resolution was to get a bit fitter, our Lawsons Bistro promotion is sure to catch your eye. Simply spend more than $10 in any single transaction and you will receive a chance to win $3,000 worth of exercise equipment.I look forward to seeing you around the club.Dave Brace Chief executive Officer

President’s ReportDear Members, happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of The Journal for 2011.This year is shaping up as a milestone for our great club. We will shortly break ground on the first stage of construction for our new car park, with the expectation that much of the work will be completed before the end of year. As previously advised it is the intention that the work be staged so that at no time will we have less available

car parking than our present number and the final result will see us with not just a greater number of parking spaces but a significantly improved parking area with better lighting and direct access off the Great Western highway. We will also shortly commence work on an upgrade to our main reception area. This refurbishment will make much better use of the vast amount of space that we have in the existing foyer along with significantly improving our ability to service our increasing number of new memberships and membership renewals. We will also use this opportunity to install the latest licence scanning technology to replace the existing Temporary Member Registers and this will improve the efficiency of this area greatly at busy times.Internally we will be building a new purpose built children’s play area adjacent to the Lawsons and Lucido areas. This new play area will be built within a large transparent room and will provide a comfortable and entertaining area for children to play whilst still being visible to their parents. The Wentworthville area has been identified as one of the fastest growing areas in NSW for young families and Wenty Leagues is well placed to take advantage of this emerging market as well as attracting families from outlying suburbs.Best wishes for 2011.Ian McCannPresident

Adam Cromack Director

You could say that Adam Cromack was born to be a director of Wenty Leagues. A 3rd generation Director of the club, Adam’s father Dennis served on the Club Board for 23 years from 1981 to 2003, including 15 years as President. Prior to Dennis, Adam’s Grandfather harry also served on the Club Board for 4 years.

Adam was involved with Wenty’s Rugby League Clubs from an early age. he played Mini League from 6 years old and was ball boy for the Metropolitan Cup from 10 to 14 years old. Off the field Adam often helped his father Dennis out with the Junior sides, taking on the role of Statistician. At just 19 years, Adam became a Team Manager for Wenty Leagues’ C Grade side alongside Tony Branson before becoming a trainer for the Metropolitan Cup team.

In 2004, Wentworthville Leagues Club members began to suggest that Adam run for the Board. Club members had a good rapport with Adam’s father and thought it would be good to have some young blood on the Board. Adam was successfully voted onto the Board of the Leagues Club, making him the youngest ever Club Director at just 27 years of age. Adam has been a Director of the Club ever since as well as serving on the Committee of the Wentworthville District Rugby League Football Club, including 3 years as Secretary. In 2009 Adam was awarded Life Membership of the District Rugby League Club.

Adam and his wife Amanda have two daughters, 5 year old Annalise and 2 year old ella. Adam is self employed after starting his own domestic and commercial electrical company - Cromack electrics. When he’s not working or spending time with his family, you’ll find Adam down at Ringrose Oval helping out with our Club’s football sides or enjoying the odd game of golf.

Ken Darke Vice President

Ken Darke signed up as a member of the Wentworthville Leagues club in May 1963, just over a year after the Club opened. Playing squash at the time, Ken convinced the Club to support his Wentworthville based team and in December 1965 squash became an official sub club of Wenty Leagues. Ken was elected as the foundation President of the Squash Club where he served for some 18 years. Whilst serving on the Squash Club’s board, Ken was invited by other Leagues Club Directors in 1981 to run as a candidate in the upcoming elections. Ken was successfully elected as a Club Director that year and has now been on the Wentworthville Leagues Club Board for 28 years, including 15 years as Vice President of the Club.

Besides Ken’s commitment to the Squash Club, he has also been heavily involved with a number of the Club’s other sporting clubs including Indoor Bowls, Men’s Bowls and the Darts Club and even helps run Wenty’s Quinlan Shield campaign. Ken has been recognised for his contribution to the Leagues Club’s sporting sides, being honoured as a Patron and Life Member of the Squash Club, a Patron of the Indoor Bowls club and Co-Patron of the Darts Club. In 1992 Ken was awarded Life Membership of the Leagues Club.

If you have ever been to a Saturday Night Starlight show or have taken part in Club promotions over the years then there is a good chance you’ve seen Ken around. he has been attending Starlight Shows for 30 odd years and been a regular participant in the Club’s Thursday and Sunday Raffles since their inception. When he gets some down time you’ll find Ken on the Club’s greens enjoying a game of bowls.

Favourite Show at Wenty – Johnny O’Keefe and Jade hurley. The Frocks in Lucido are also very good.

Beverage of choice – XXXX Gold

nRL team – Parramatta eels

Favourite meal at Wenty – T-Bone Steak or Lemon Sole

Justin Isaacs Director

having grown up in the area, Justin Isaacs has played cricket for Wenty Leagues since he was 17. Justin has always had a passion for the game of cricket and quickly became involved with the Cricket Club. Justin’s commitment did not go unrecognised and he was elected onto the Cricket Club Board at just 20 years of age. Just three seasons later Justin became the Senior Grade Secretary for the Cricket Club, serving in this role for 6 years.

In 2006 Justin stepped up to the Vice Presidency position at the Cricket Club and a year later he became the President of the club. Justin has held the position of President of the Cricket Club ever since and was recognised for his contributions in 2008, when he was awarded Life Membership of the Cricket Club. In addition to the Cricket Club Justin is also Co-Patron of the Darts Club.

Justin was encouraged to run for the Wentworthville Leagues Club Board in 2009 by a number of members who felt that his youth and financial acumen would be a valuable asset to the Board. Justin’s experience in finance through his employment and his background of being highly involved with the Club via Cricket, made Justin a strong candidate and is what led to him being successfully voted onto the Board of Directors.

Justin and wife Sue have two kids together. Nathan is 6 years old and Jarrod is 2. Justin works as a Financial Advisor and when he’s not at work you’ll find him either playing cricket or watching cricket. Justin also enjoys heading down to the Club for the Friday and Saturday night bands.

Important Message for all Club MembersYour Club’s future is under threat.

In the most recent Federal election, the Gillard Government chose to put the future of thousands of Clubs, with millions of members just like you, at risk in order to gain the support of Tasmanian Independent Andrew Wilkie. Mr. Wilkie received just 13,000 votes in the election. he has never visited our club and has no regard for the damage that his proposed legislative changes will mean for clubs across Australia.

What could happen to our Club?

The Government has committed to introducing a $250 withdrawal limit from ATM’s (the Casino will be exempted). This will mean that if you need more than that, you will be prevented from having access to your money in your club.

The Government has also announced that it will introduce mandatory pre-commitment technology on poker machines. This means that to play a poker machine you would first need to apply for a device which you would need to insert into a poker machine before you are able to play. The device would record how much you spend and stop you from playing on every machine in the country when you have reached your set limit. This is effectively a ‘licence to gamble’.

Why does the Club oppose these measures?

We believe that these measures treat all of our 33,000 members as irresponsible and like problem gamblers. You should be able to have access to your own money in your club. We believe that you are already able to set your own limits on poker machine play like a responsible adult and should not be told by the government how much you can spend. We believe that problem gamblers should get proper counselling and help, rather than forcing all club members, including you, to get a licence to play a poker machine.

We also don’t believe that these measures will stop problem gambling. Because these measures only target poker machines, punters will stop coming to the club and go online to gamble.

So what will these measures mean for us? We will suffer a significant reduction in our income. In order to survive we will need to increase the price of food and beverage, cut jobs and reduce or cut altogether funding to many of our sporting clubs and community organisations.

How can I help stop this from happening?

If you want to stop the government from doing this to your club, please contact your federal member and ask them to support your club and vote against these proposals. Let them know that Poker Machine reform did not form

any part of their political platform and that you expect them to act responsibly and in consultation with the industry.

Memorandum of UnderstandingOn 10 October 2010, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ClubsNSW and the NSW Liberals and Nationals was signed. The MoU details the club policy platform of the NSW Liberals and Nationals should they win government at the State election on 26 March 2011. The MoU is a positive move for our Club and would help secure our future if the Coalition win government at the next State election. The full copy of the MoU is on the next page.

Sailability and Holroyd Special SchoolSailability (www.sailability.org) is a “not for profit”, volunteer-based organisation which, through the activity of sailing, enriches the lives of people with all types of disability, including the elderly and the financially and socially disadvantaged.

For the past two summers, students of holroyd Special School at Merrylands have participated in a program involving sailing in two person access sailing dinghies, which has been run by the Dobroyd branch of Sailability on the scenic waters of Iron Cove at Drummoyne. These Australian designed dinghies are purpose built for people with special needs, being very stable and unsinkable.

The program has proved to be a most enjoyable activity for the students, which has also enabled

them to learn basic sailing skills and enhanced their self-confidence in a totally new environment.

Sailability Dobroyd was recently the grateful recipient of a $4,000 grant from Wenty Leagues. This grant will be going towards the purchase of a new wheelchair accessible floating pontoon.

Boat WinnerCongratulations to Mary Vassallo who won the Club’s Win a Boat for Summer draw on Sunday 21 November. Mrs Vassallo took home the fabulous 4.95 metre Allison Alloy Bow Rider valued at $38,000.

Junior WentyChefLocal Greystanes 10 year old Yasmine Chehade beat some stiff competition to become the inaugural Junior WentyChef.

Preparing her delicious double chocolate caramel slice, Yasmine impressed the judges with both her execution in the kitchen and the quality of her dish.

The final of the competition saw four young contenders prepare a dish in the state of the art Lucido commercial kitchen for a select group of friends and family plus the three judges.

For winning Junior WentyChef Yasmine received a $250 Toys R Us voucher and had her dish included in the Lucido menu through December.
