“To those in our society who have lost all hope and joy in life, to the elderly whostruggle alone and feel their strength waning, to young people who seem tohave no future, to all I once more address the words of the Risen One: “See, Iam making all things new … To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from thespring of the water of life” (Rev 21:5-6). May this comforting message of Jesushelp each of us to set out anew with greater courage to blaze trails ofreconciliation with God and with all our brothers and sisters. ” (Pope Francis’ Urbi et Orbi blessing on Easter Sunday 2016)

Easter is a time to renew our courage to believe that evil will not prevail butlove. I need to root myself even more in the Good News of Easter as I lookedat all the happenings around me. The senseless killings of the 4 sisters ofCharity in Yemen, the terrible Brussels attack, the heartless Easter attack at apark in Lahore, the migrant crisis in Europe, the epidemic of violence againstwomen and children … my heart breaks for the broken world. At the sametime, I am struck with the fearful reality that anything can happen at anywhereand at anytime, even my safe world does not seem to be so safe anymore.

“Do not be afraid ”- these words are constantly repeated by the Risen Jesus inthe Resurrection stories. What does this mean for us, for me? The resurrectionof Jesus does not make our world to be less painful, less messy. If we thinkthat the Risen Jesus will magically fix all problems, then we do not fully graspthe meaning of His resurrection. Jesus’ resurrection shows us that the story ofGood Friday did not end with death. Rather, life is stronger than death, love isdeeper than hatred. Because of His resurrection, we know with sure hope thatthe sufferings we see around us as well as our own personal challenges willnever have the last word. This is because God is there for us, and so He is ourcourage. The story is not yet over …
