Dear Reader,

Welcome to the February-March edition of Leyton Life magazine; keep downloading the latest editions and checking out the website for new in-formation. Spread the word amongst your friends and family, this is an inde-pendent publication for you so come on board write in with any suggestions or information of importance to. This issue has debut from an upcoming writer, who has been writing her blog for a while now; Ms April Showers I won’t disclose her true identity as yet, but you can follow her work more details p12. If you fancy writing in using a pseudonym to add a little intrigue then get in touch; it can be very empowering.Leyton Life is still searching for some editors for the younger section of the magazine more details p23. If you know of some young talented individuals or groups please send them their parent/guardian/teachers in this direc-tion.Holistic approach is to become a prominent feature of each edition it will be a chance to start a topic of discussion, generate some debate and provide feedback in a following edition. Happy Mother’s day to all mothers and those who are like a mother to in-dividuals irrespective of age. No excuses remember Sunday 15th of March, and make a special effort for that special mother figure in your life!There really should be no need to mention February the 14th to anyone but even now it is amazing how many people claim to forget Valentine’s Day; so here it is…don’t forget!

What is Reiki?by Ms. April Showers - Mind Body & Soulhttp://msaprilshowers.com

Traditionally Reiki is an old Japanese method used to help people reduce stress, encourage relaxation and healing, allowing the general wellbeing of a person to improve. It is based on the assumption that the life force energy flowing through us can be improved by increasing it to a higher level. English language authors have often referred to the translation of Reiki as the “Universal Life Energy”. The word Reiki itself is made up of two old Japanese words when literally translated mean “Rei”: The higher power (spirit, miraculous, devine) and “Qi” meaning life force energy (spiritual energy). As a holistic treatment, Reiki is suitable for everyone. It is a simple natural method of spiritual healing and works

quite well alongside other treatment such as western medicine. Although spiritual, there is no religious aspect to Reiki. With it, Reiki brings universal ethics with the promotion of peace and harmony, not only within yourself but there is also a positive life force energy extending to others around you. Reiki promotes kindness to others, and helps to overcome negative emotions such as anger. It does this by teaching and learning to live in a state of gratitude. The practice of Reiki can only be taught by a Reiki master. Traditionally these teachers pass on their knowledge and skills to their students. The founder of the Reiki system of natural healing is Mikao Usui, (1865

– 1926) who was a Japanese Buddhist having developed this technique in 1922 during his meditation sessions. He came up with several principals and suggested that the client take responsibility for his own healing in mind body and soul. From this early stage Reiki has been adapted over the years.

General Principles of ReikiReiki is not a religion or a different belief system. It is quite simply channelling into a life source energy thus helping to improve your life overall. It is about living a universal ideal way of life according to ethics and the energy force. The reasoning behind Reiki is that all living things have a flow of energy, and when this energy is interrupted

in any way it disrupts the balance and harmony therefore impacting our overall sense of wellbeing. The general principal is to use the palms of the hands for healing purposes. Using this principle, the practitioner transfers “qi” (universal energy) from the palms to allow self-healing to occur in the client, which ultimately bring about a sense of balance and wellbeing.The actual treatment of Reiki is quite simple. While the recipient relaxes fully clothed on a coach or chair, the practitioner uses their hands just above or touching certain parts of the body. The touch is not obtrusive and therefore unlike a massage. The treatment focuses on the “wholeness” of a person rather than areas or parts of the body. As a result, the recipient often reports feelings of calm and peace and deep relaxation amongst other positive emotional feelings. The Two Main Areas of Reiki:1.Traditional Japanese

Reiki – Hand positions are used intuitively 2.Western Reiki – Hand placements used systematically

Both techniques have in common the hierarchy system of First, Second and Master levels. Each level is mastered with differing techniques and requires certain skills. Health Benefits of Reiki:As Reiki requires no special equipment, it is basically a non intrusive form of natural treatment and can be carried out almost anywhere. Generally Reiki is adaptable to the needs of the recipient and helps benefit in the following ways:

• Increases and balances energy levels;• Relieves pain and discomfort;• Aids meditative states; • Promotes personal awareness;• Creates deep relaxation and helps the body release stress and tension;• Clears the mind and

improves focus;• Accelerates the body’s ability to self-heal;• Aids better sleep;• Helps spiritual growth and emotional cleansing;• Promotes creativity; and• Compliments medical treatment.

The benefits of Reiki can be experienced by anyone at any stage without necessarily having to experience illness. In fact this type of healing can help you to deal with pain as well as to release emotions attached to the symptom which results in the healing the actual ailment.

*Before having a Reiki treatment, why not do your own research on this therapy, and try to find a practitioner that has either been recommended, or has been established for a while. If you are unable to then call one locally for an informal chat, and go with your gut instinct. Never feel pressured into having any treatments which you are not comfortable with.

I like a lot of other people are grateful for the technological, and scientific advances. But sometimes find, traditional non evasive treatments, which can count as complimentary treatments are just never given the time of day. I could write a whole article as to why this is happening but I won’t; should you wish to find out you can contact me, or do your own research. I aim to bring you positive findings, of more natural holistic items, provide you with the knowledge and give you the chance to hopefully carry out your own investigations, and apply these small changes into your lifestyle and see how they may benefit you.

Turmeric has been used widely in the kitchen for centuries, but more importantlyfor the medicinal purposes inbothAyurveda and Chinese medicine. Medicine I hear you uttering……yes a small packet of turmeric powder(not curry powder there is a difference)will cost you less than £1.00 and the health benefits are endless. Popular herbal stores sell these as capsules for a much higher price.

Turmeric is from the ginger family and curcumin is the main compound associated to the health benefits, as it

contains powerful anti-inflammatory benefits and powerful antioxidants. Before embarking on any changes always seek medical advice from your GP, as they will know of your medical history; so far the only people who should be careful are those with clotting issues and pregnant.
