Call for artists: Remembering “In Flanders Fields” Art Exhibition

It’s a month into the New Year and many of us have thoughtabout goals we want to achieve, but let’s make it official andtrack our progress! When setting goals, avoid making them toostrict and unrealistic. Firstly, ask yourself “What do I do well inmy diet?” and “What am I willing to change?” Write down thesethoughts including a record of your meals for a few days. Thisjournal will help you gain an understanding of what you aredoing well and help you anticipate obstacles you may encounter.Challenge yourself by trying to do one thing differently each dayand record the details.

New things to considerο Add new methods to your routine, like making your ownsnacks. Keep it simple and build upon your success.

ο Allocating time on a certain day of the week like Sundays formeal preparation is a great way to start the week, try batchcooking

ο Start slow with preparing only one or two recipes for theweek and as you get more comfortable you can increase theamount of preparation

ο Familiarity. Start with preparing recipes that you know beforemoving onto new ones, and stick to one’s that make great left-overs

οRecord what recipes and strategies worked and didn’t work,

as well as any obstacles so you can come up with a specificsolution

ο Simple tasks like washing and chopping are tasks that can bedone ahead of time that save time and do not require actualcookingChoose one area that you know needs change and work on it.

For example, follow the plate method: fill half your plate withvegetables 3 out of 5 days per week at dinner. Some research indicates it takes at least 21 days to

form a new habit. Make your goals SMART (specific, measure-able, action).

Get some supportConsider working with a registered Dietitian to keep you ontrack and give you ideas for your goal. Did you know"Nutritionist" is not a protected name? Anyone can call them-selves a nutritionist. Registered Dietitians are licensed profes-sionals and are part of the protected group of Allied HealthPractitioners (Medical Doctors, Dentists, etc.) Be smart aboutwhere you get your advice.

Canada Water Week will be celebrated coast-to-coast starting March 16. There’s lotsyou can do to get in the spirit! Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Challenge yourself to a six–minute shower! Daily 10–minute showers cost you about$95 a year (per person). A six–minute shower will cost you just $57 a year. If you use alow–flow showerhead you’ll pay even less–just $32 a year. Want more household tips?Book a free eMerge Home Visit at emergeguelph.ca and get a retrofit package plus practi-cal tips that can turn into big savings on your water bill.

2. Learn about local water. Do you know where Guelph tap water comes from? Do you knowwhere the Speed and Eramosa Rivers flow? Where do these rivers meet? What animals livethere? Is Guelph Lake man–made or natural? Explore water in Guelph by visitingguelph.ca/water and grandriver.ca, then take a walk along the water and look for animalsthat live there.

3. Check for leaks at home. Slow drips can really add up. One easy way to look for leaks isto watch your water meter. Your home’s water meter is usually in your basement wherewater pipes enter your home. Find the ‘low flow indicator’ on the face of your meter, usually a small red or black triangle or dial. Ensure no water is being used in the home, then check to see if the indicator is turning, moving or shaking. If it is, water is flowingthrough the meter and you have a leak. For more tips visit guelph.ca/ourstoconserve.

4. Come out to the H2O Go! Festival. Enjoy games and workshops and win great prizes. Thisfree, family event also includes live music, art activities, face painting, and an ecomarket!Check it out on Saturday, March 22, 10am-2pm at Old Quebec Street.

5. Enjoy a nice, tall glass of Guelph water, on–tap since 1880! Celebrate and appreciate135 years of safe, reliable drinking water delivered right to your home.

There are many cultural gems at the GuelphYouth Music Centre, but one of the morerecent additions is the Coleman Collection ofheritage instruments. The collection representsone woman’s passion for music and musicalinstruments of different cultures from aroundthe world. The late Barbara Coleman gatheredthe pieces over a period of several decades. Some of them were found while she was travel-ing abroad and others were uncovered in localantique shops in the Baden area. Thecollection was generously donated by theColeman Family.Originally, the collection was permanently

put on loan and displayed at the University ofGuelph, so students and scholars could studythem. However, due to space restrictions, theywere moved to the Guelph Youth Music Centre.Instruments, like those on display at the

GYMC, are still in use today in classical, popu-lar and folk music ensembles, while others areunusual examples of handmade and one-of-a-kind pieces. An interactive computerprovides visual information and an audiodemonstration. Some of the instruments on display are

African flutes, Balalaika, Concertina, Dahu,

Dulcimer, Guitar Zither, Half-tube Zither, HurdyGurdy, Mandolin Guitarophone, Mbria,Nyckelinarpa, Pi’Pa and Zither. The underlying theme of the collection is that

these instruments were used by immigrantswho settled in Canada and they either broughtthem from their homeland or acquired themhere. This collection demonstrates the rich anddiverse musical heritage that contributed to19th and 20th century Canadian culture. The Guelph Youth Music Centre is very

proud of this beautiful collection, and wel-comes visitors to view, listen and enjoy theColeman Collection of Heritage Instruments. The GYMC is a not-for-profit organization

that is dedicated to education, enrichment andfostering the development of youth throughmusic and the arts. This unique facility is anexciting cultural hub for children of all agesand backgrounds in the community. Through avariety of programs, provision of space to part-ner organizations and outreach into the com-munity, the GYMC enriches many lives. For more information visit www.gymc.ca.

This travelling exhibit from the Bruce County Museum andCultural Centre promotes the knowledge, appreciation andunderstanding of Masonic history and Freemasonry’s influeneceupon our society today.

Rooted in the ancient traditions of European stonemasonsguilds, Freemasonry was borne out of a need to create a broth-

erhood based on ethical behaviour and coded rites of passage. This fascinating exhibit sheds light on why and how this fraternalorder took root in many 19th century Ontario towns and stillcontinues strong today. Augmenting the exhibit are photographsand documents from local Masonic orders of Wellington County. The exhibit runs at the Wellington County Museum and

Archives until April 26.
