The alleged racial segmentation was implemented at the beginning of the year by school principal Jean Vetter. African teachers teach Zulu speaking pupils while Coloured teachers are responsible for those pupils who speak Afrikaans, said a source. Speaking to Echo, teachers confirmed this act of classing pupils according to their ethnicity and said it was racist. They said that last year, Vetter threatened to phase out the isiZulu language and even took the matter to the department. “She lied and told the department that there was a shortage of Zulu language teachers. The aim was to scrap the Zulu language and make pupils learn Afrikaans instead. This racial segregation has placed pressure on Zulu language teachers who end up having 50 pupils in class, while the Coloured teachers have a much smaller number. At the school, we have almost 80% of Zulu speaking pupils and it’s strenu- ous on African teachers. This implementa- tion promotes racism among pupils and it kills the spirit of a rainbow nation. A school is an institution where a child should learn but in this situation, it’s like they are fed on how to be racist,” said the teacher. Another teacher said that the issue of isiZulu was dealt with last year and the Department of Education was informed and intervened. “African teachers end up having overcrowded classes to teach. The princi- pal is against the teaching and learning of Zulu and she can’t hide it,” said the teacher. While the principal could not comment, KZN Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said they will send the circuit management team to the school to check if the allegations are true. “They will have to check if that is done for curriculum purposes or if it’s discriminatory because if the latter is the case, then that is unacceptable,” said Mahlambi. >> Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters told to get out of Sobantu as they visited an IEC voting station

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]

UMGUNGUNDLOVU EFFregional convenor ReggieNgcobo has described some

ANC members in Sobantu as hooli-gans.

This after reports on Sunday thatthere was confrontation betweenmembers of the ANC and the EFF atMfenendala community hall inSobantu.

According toNgcobo, members oftheEFFwent there to check the turn-out of voters who came for registra-tion, as it was the IEC’s registrationweekend.

“Wehaddone thesamethingwithother voting districts in France andImbali Unit 14. We were not there tofight or distract anyone in Sobantu.WearrivedinSobantuandaccommo-dated ourselves outside the hall.

“Aswewere sitting there, a groupof five women started making some

noise over nothing. They startedshoutingwhichdrewalotofattentionand people started flocking in. Theywere swearing. And seeing that hap-pening, police had to intervene.

“The police had to form a humanshield to separate us from them. Wehad planned to stay there for 15minutes but seeing that the ANCmembershadmadeuscelebrities, westayed longer than we had plannedto,” said Ngcobo.

WardcouncillorThandiMatiwane

said the ANC is grateful for the EFFmembers misbehaviour. She saidwith the noise and chaos caused byEFF members, the Sobantu commu-nity came in numbers to register andtocheckif theywereonthevotersroll.

“Most people were too lazy tocome to the voting district because itwas a Sunday. We thank the EFF fordrawing attention. With all the chaosand noise, people came out in num-bers to register. We had a huge turn-out, especially with the new voters. I

would like to emphasise that mem-bers of EFF were intimidating thecommunity. They blocked theentrance and they started takingpictures using their iPads. It was notthe ANC members. Tthe communityof Sobantu was against what theywere doing and no one was hurt orbeaten,” said Matiwane.

Captain Thulani Zwane said therewas a case of intimidation that wasopened by the EFF members but noone had been arrested.

ANC will indeedrule for a long time>> Demystifying two main points raised by the opposition partiesagainst the ANC: The ANC shall indeed rule South Africa for theunforeseeable future!, writes THEMBINKOSI ‘GUERRILLA’ ZONDI

AS much as I have been flirtingwith the idea of writing anarticle about how the current

oppositionparties inSouthAfricawillneverdefeatthe102yearsoldAfricanNationalCongress (ANC), even if theywere to swallow their often inflatedbut bruised political egos, I mustconfess that this article is mainlymotivated by Professor MalegapuruMakgoba’s article that he recentlywrote titled “A democracy at thecrossroads.”

This article appeared in the CityPresspublicationof 19 January2014on page 30.

For thebenefit of thosewhomighthavemissedMakgoba’sarticle, letmequickly highlight what I think aresome of the key points.

TheProf.argued–andIabsolutelyagree – that since 1994, there hasbeen significant changes (both intermsofquality andquantity) inmostruralandurbanareasinSouthAfrica. These changes include, although arenot limited to, tarred roads, electrici-ty, clean running water, health facili-ties such as clinics, schools and theextension of government grantswhich are received on time.

I am pleased that at least someacademics such asMakgoba do havegutstoadmit that theANCanditsgov-ernmentisthebestthingthathaseverhappenedtoSouthAfricainthatithasmadethelatteralivewithpossibilitiesand a better country to live in, not-withstanding some challenges, mostof which are structural.

However, the main intention forwriting this article is not to whineabout well-known post-1994 struc-tural challenges such as poverty, unemployment and inequalities, including internal ANC problems ascorrectly identified by the Prof. like

“cronyism…lackof integrity,compla-cency of incumbency and at timesarrogance and a failure to deal withwaywardmembers”, which the ANCalso admits.

Instead, this short article seeks todemystify two main points raised bythe opposition parties against theANC.

Firstly, the opposition argues thattheANCgovernment has allowed theissue of corruption to reach unprece-dented levels. Secondly, that theANCgovernmenthas failed to improve thelives of theSouthAfricanpeople suchthat someopposition parties, such asthe EFF, have stopped short fromdaring to claim that the apartheidgovernmentwas better than theANCgovernment.

Let me quickly deal with each ofthese points before proceeding toargueastowhythecurrentfragment-ed state of opposition parties vindi-cates the claim that the ANC shallindeed rule South Africa for the un-foreseeable future. Whether you – as

areaderof thisarticle–agreewithmeor not, the truth of the matter is thattheANCgovernmenthasdonea lot toarrest the issue of corruption.

For instance since 1994, the ANCgovernmenthasbeenintensifyingthefight against corruption, both in thepublic andprivate sectors, from initi-ating methods aimed at preventingpublic servants from doing businesstoholdingpublicofficials individuallyliable for losses arising from corrup-tion.

Additionally, it has taken anunprecedented decision that anyANC member or ANC public repre-sentative found guilty before a courtof law, especially on charges ofcorruption, should step down fromany leadership positions in the ANC,government and society at large.

As much as the above decision isyet to be given practical meaning, itsignals a serious commitment tofighting against corruption. Moreo-ver, the ANC government has put inplace systems and programs whichhave exposed corrupt activities. However, the ANC admits that all ofthesearenotenough, henceitcallsonboththeprivateandthepublicsectorstodesist fromparticipatingincorruptactivities such as bribing public serv-ants etc.

The claim that the ANC has failedto improve the lives of SouthAfricans

is fallacious to say the least. Forinstance, the ANC government hasdone a lot to transform Bantu educa-tion toan inclusiveeducationsystem, resulting in theelevationof theseniorcertificate rate to above 70%. Arisingfrom this and other governmentinterventions, the number of gradu-ates has doubled since the ANC gov-ernment took over.

Furthermore, it is also an indis-putable fact that today more than 15million people are able to go to bedwith something in their stomachsbecause of the comprehensive anti-povertyprogramsaimedat intensify-ing social security networks, thuscontributing significantly towardsaddressing three scientific discover-iesmadebyKarlMarxasobservedbyhis friend Frederick Engels, which isthe issue of food, and shelter, in thelight of the fact that it has built morethan 3.1 million houses.

Another fact which cannot bedisputed is that the ANC governmentremains committed to fightingagainst joblessness throughdifferentinitiatives, which includes –althoughnot limited to – labour-intensive pub-lic works programs of whose incen-tives can be used by beneficiaries toaddress the issue of clothing beyondfoodandshelter, amongother things.

Therefore, it is misleading andmyopic for the opposition parties to

argue that the ANC government hasnever done nothing to improve thelives of South Africans, especiallyconsidering the fact that the SouthAfrican economy has increased from83% over the past 19 years and thatthe disposable income per capita ofhouseholds has augmented by 43%and the total employment hasincreased by more than 3.5 millionsince the Peoples Government cameinto office (see the ANC Statement on20 Years of Democracy).

Flowing from the above, I contentthat no opposition would have man-aged toscoresomeof theabovevicto-ries other than the 102 years oldnational liberation movement. Letme conclude by agreeing with fourkey reasons as to why South Africanopposition parties will never defeatthe ANC, thus making the ANC gov-ernment to be more relevant thanever before.

Firstly, it istruethat“someoftheseopposition parties are direct off-shootsorimitationsofthe‘broadANCchurch’ in some form.”

Secondly, that “each of these par-ties is led by a single domineering‘cult-like or disgruntled figure’ with-out whom these is no party.”

Thirdly, “the leader is the partyand theparty leader isnot ready tobeled by any other member within theparty or other opposition party lead-ers” (the recent five day marriage ofDAandAgangbeingarelevantrecentexample)andfinally that“someof theleadershavesuchchequeredpoliticalhistory and record”.

All of these four points mean onething to the voter which is: “this isneither the time (hopingnosuch timewill ever come) to contemplateremovingtheANCgovernmentnor togive it less support” as Prof correctlyputs it.

As a result, the ANC shall indeedruleSouthAfrica into theunforeseea-ble future.*Thembinkosi “Guerrilla” Zondi isthe KZN 221 ward 3 ANC branch secre-tary and ANC caucus KZN LegislatureSenior Researcher writing in his ownpersonal capacity.

ship with a German arts company, areaimed at instilling the love of theatreamong aspiring actors and to teach themabout the different types of theatricalproductions.Project coordinator Skhumbuzo Dlamini

said: “This is a pilot project to facilitateworkshops to those artists who do notknow about theatre, and those who arealready involved but lack information onphysical theatre. Most artists are nottrained on physical theatre. They are usedto only one type of theatre which is musicalwhere there is a lot of music and manyactors on stage.“In physical theatre there are only a fewactors who have to perform without anyinstruments in the background. Throughthese workshops, we want to upskill aspiring actors by exposing them to differenttypes of theatre, and at the same time, linkthem with actors from Germany,” he said.He said that there is a huge gap among cityartists in terms of theatre performance, and through these workshop.,they arehoping to take theatrical performance tothe next level.

“City artists are talented but are notexposed to theatre performances and asa result, lose out on opportunities. We willbe using ‘Woza Albert’, a stage play byMbongeni Ngema, to showcase what wemean by physical theatre”, said Dlamini. He said the focus is mainly on underprivi

DURBAN will be taken to the extreme whenthe aweinspiring action sports athletes ofNitro Circus unleash their unique deathdefy

The heartstopping showalso includes the crew pushing the boundaries onskates, scooters and a rangeof crazy contraptionsincluding a drinks cooler,Barbie car, toy trike, shopping trolley and bodyboard. The event is, in essence, perfection within chaos.Speaking exclusively to theWitness, Aaron Fotheringham arguably the mostphenomenal and compelling of the athletes said:“It’s going to be unlike anything South African fanshave ever seen before.”Nitro Circus originated as a small DVD series filmedin Pastrana’s Maryland backyard and rapidlyevolved into a successful MTV show and later a feature film. Nitro Circus Live was launched in 2010and has since captured the imagination of fansworldwide with a string of sellout shows and

know if we ever expected it to grow so big. Woza Albert!at the Hex>> One of the plays for which South African theatre is bestknown internationally

WOZA Albert! is one of the plays forwhich South African theatre is bestknown internationally.

Its style of storytelling has inspired andinfluenced theatre companies around theworld, and it remains one of the most vibrantexamples of satirical anti-apartheid SouthAfrican Theatre.

This classic of South African theatre askswhat would happen if Christ (Morena) cameback to 1980’s apartheid South Africa. Theshow is primarily a satire that highlights theabsurdities of apartheid and displays thetalents of two dextrous actors, in this case TQZondi and Mpilo Nzimande, who play a rangeof ordinary characters on the street.

Directed by Peter Mitchell, the first half ofthisproductionhighlights theabsurdityofpass

laws and the ultimate control employers hadover the lives of their employees.

As it moves through to the anticipation andarrival of the saviour (courtesy of SAA), itbecomesdarkerandmoreforebodingashislifeis relived in an apartheid context.

Usingtheelementsof theatreestablishedbyJerzy Grotowski and Peter Brook, andcombining themwith South African TownshipTheatre, the creators of the piece, directorBarney Simon and performers MbongeniNgema and Percy Mtwa, evolved a piece oftheatre that has stood the test of time.

Woza Albert! will feature at the HexagonTheatre on 19, 20, 21, 26 and 27 February at6pm. Tickets cost R60 (R40 for students andseniors). Bookings at Computicket.

Birkett-Zondi pairfancied for glory>> Dusi greats tip the duo to walk away with the first prize for the 2014 water race

Former Dusi champions Martin Dreyerand Ant Stott have both tipped the crewofAndyBirkett andSboneloZondi towin

this year’s Dusi Canoe marathon that starts atCamps Drift today.

“Onpaperthereisonecrewtowinitthisyear– Andy Birkett and Sbonelo Zondi,” said Stott, normally diplomatic and non-committal.

“Butremember,thisistheDusiandanythingcan happen,” he added.

Stott, whohaswon theDusi four times, saysthat a low river may result in a closer marginbetween Birkett and Zondi and their strongestrivals, Lance Kime and Thulani Mbanjwa, butthat thesuperiorpaddlingpowerofBirkettandZondi should have too much power and willprevail in the end.

Anticipating a close race, Stott said that ifthetwoprotagonistsweresidebysideattheendof the second stage, the racemight comedowntowhich crew gets onto the narrowpath goingup the Burma Road portage first.

Dreyer, a seven timeswinner of theDusi, al-so shortlisted the 2014winner to the same twocrews, but hadBirkett andZondi ashis favour-ites to win because they had formed a closerbond during their preparations for the race.

“Sbonelo andAndy are super-focused rightnow because they have eaten, slept and drunkthe Dusi together all summer. They have beenliving in each other’s bags, and that counts inthe end,” said Dreyer.

“Asa crew, theyarepaddling really stronglyandwe all know howwell Andy has been pad-dling this past year, with his win at the U23world marathon championships,” he added.

“RememberhowhetookonHankMcGregorat the recent N3TC Drak Challenge and won?It has been difficult for Lance and Bungee(Mbanjwa) with Lance having to head back toStellenbosch University, but they will be rightthere. It will be a two horse race, “ said Dreyer.

He added that the powerful surfski duo ofmarathon world champ Hank McGregor andhisCapepartner JasperMockéwould come in-to the racemoreandmoreas it progressed, butfelt they wouldn’t be within striking distancecome the third and final stage into BlueLagoon.Stott speculated thata fewof the lesserfancied crews could finish in the top five, andwill be poised to capitalise on the smallestmis-take by anyone of the top three fancied crews.

“Watchout forBenBiggsandKarlFolscher,”said Stott. “Jakub Adam and Cam Schoemanare also going to have a good race,” he predict-ed. “Keep an eye on Kwanda Mhlope andZonele Nzuza, and Shaun Griffin and JacquesTheron will also be there or thereabouts,” headded.

THABO DLADLA

Neglected groundsWE are definitely letting down the present generationof footballers in Pietermaritzburg. It is sad that in a period when we expected things tobe a little better for football, the present administra

tion is letting us down. Why is Msunduzi Municipality neglecting the maintenance of soccer fields in this town? The situation isembarrassing and disappointing considering that thesport is played mainly by poor Black boys and girls. We have ordinary men and women like Malombo Ngcongo of Central Brothers making lots of sacrifices.Presently, we are experiencing lots of bad behaviourin our youth. Drug and alcohol abuse, early sexual involvement, criminal activities are some of the thingstearing our communities apart.People like Ngcongo spend their family’s monies torun football clubs and yet the ‘people’s’ municipalitycannot even cut grass and mark the fields. We haveregressed 100 years back. I have observed that manySAB clubs are struggling for transport, equipment likeballs, boots and even shin pads. It is crazy, for instance, that a club in Imbali stage 1 receive no support fromthe community. This is a township that has produced many people

in top positions in public and private sectors. Why doBlack people find it difficult to give back to their com

munities? It is important that we do some introspection and correct the wrongs.Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula made lots of noiseabout our footballers last week. How do our playersbecome better on unmarked fields? How do playersremain motivated in situations where coaching ispoor, there are no proper training facilities, no equipment and no food at home? It is easy to criticise whenyour children are enjoying the best sports facilities inprivate schools.I appeal to our honourable mayor and his team to

attend to the poor state of football facilities. The government cannot do everything. It is also important that we all make some contributions towardsacademic and sports education of the youth. Unzimalo mthwalo!
