According to residents, the clin- ic, which is in the vicinity of houses, was previously used as a pharmacy but it is now operating on a perma- nent basis. At the top of their concerns is the medical waste, including nappies, that is discarded negligently in their neighbourhood. With the clinic opening at about 9am, residents claim that some of the patients who arrive as early as 5am use their backyards as toilets. “They urinate on my concrete fence daily and on my vegetable garden. I do not know what kind of sickness I will get in the long run, as these people come here because they are sick, and bacteria is conta- gious. “As a result, I keep my four year- old granddaughter locked inside the house because I do not want her to catch any diseases. We have dogs who also go and collect waste from this clinic,” said a neighbour who did not want to be identified. Another resident said that they are not against the presence of a clinic in the area, but believe that it is not where it is supposed to be. “Although we do not know about health regulations, we do not think that a clinic is supposed to be between residential areas. You can- not even tell that it is a clinic,” said Bobby Padayachee. Another resident, who also did not want to be identified, said: “It is a health hazard and also, residen- tial areas are supposed to have privacy. There is no privacy because even if you are resting at your home, as early as 5amyou are woken by crying children and people who are arriving at the clin- ic. Over the past few weeks, our homes have become a nest for crim- inals, because there are thieves who come under the pretence of being patients.” Despite having approached the department about the matter, the residents say that nothing has been done. Umgungundlovu health district, spokesperson Musawenkosi Mncwabe said that Masons clinic used to provide a full package and Copesville was open only as a chronic medication collection point. “When the department took over all former municipal clinics, it was discovered that Masons had huge infrastructure challenges. A deci- sionwastakentomovesomeservic- es temporarily to Copesville clinic while the district looked for a per- manent solution. As a short term solution, the department is facilitat- ing more park homes to be erected at Masons clinic so that the services can be moved back there. Vox pop on DA and Agang’s divorce“It was not a good idea in the firstplace. In my own analysis, Agang’smajority are black people and theDA’s majority are white people. Itwas not clever for black people tojoin the DA as that would haveincreased votes for the partywhose majority is white people.”

Noxolo Mkhize

“I think it was a good ideato try and lump the twotogether. In a way it waspromoting unity betweenthe black and whitecommunities. It’s a pity itdidn’t last that long but itwould have been a goodthing.”

Nomonde Zuma

“I was against the idea from thestart. If the marriage hadcontinued, there were chances ofgrowing the DA. Helen Zille oncecomplained about the high passrate of black pupils. To me, as ablack pupil in South Africa whois working hard to earn goodresults, that was an insult. Thismarriage would have increasedthe number of votes for the DAwhich I still think divides peopleaccording to their race.”

Nomasonto Gumede

“The marriage idea was not badbut my worry about all of thiswas that this would have grownthe voters for the DA. Obviouslythey would have not beaten theANC but that small increasedpercentage would have done somedamage somewhere.”

Lungelo Mtolo

JUST five days after the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Agangannounced their marriage, predictions about it not lasting haveproved to be true. The DA, led by Helen Zille and Agang by Mamph

ele Ramphele will be no longer be campaigning hand in hand for votesin the next election, after parting ways in an embarrassing way.NOMPENDULO NGUBANE spoke to people on the street to findout what they have to say about the marriage and the divorce.

solution to this exclusionof natives in

the political, economic and social af-

fairs of their own land, and thus

embarked on a national campaign

where he effectively mobilised tradi-

tional leaders, African academics,

intellectuals and professionals

around this idea of his of forming a

South African Native National

Congress. The 31–year–old Seme’s

tour-de-force in succeeding to unite

under one roof all the tribes of South-

nations as president and the Zulu

culture anyway demands that the

hunter boy must hand over his first

passerine kill to seniors (“Inyoni

this bird in the hand called the South

African Native National Congress for

you, uncle”.

What we as young Africans in

South Africa today must learn from

thispartofthePixleySemestory,first-

plays a fundamental role in the life of

young Africans that intend on realis-

ing their full potential. We also learn from Seme’s most

significant achievement, that the

unity of Africans has the potential to

achieve everything. His refusal to be

a judge in a system that deliberately

economically marginalises his own

people, yet creates an exception for

him in those years, elucidates his

principled posturewhichwe certain-

ly, as young Africans, must emulate.

Pixley ka Seme was young when

he founded the ANC, however he

exhibits impeccable humility and

selflessnessinthewakeofmonumen-

JohnLangalibaleleDube tobe found-

ing president instead of him. Highly

educated as he was, he was able to

maintain his respect for his culture,

his people and elders for he under-

intertwined, interdependent and can

manage and control the economy of

their native land. This and more can

be achieved if only we, the youth of

this country, could follow in the foot-

stepsofour forefatherswhogathered

in 1912 to put aside our differences

and unite under the banner of

complete liberation, which is cen-

Better schoolsto offer help tothe worst ones

Underperforming schools will not be the

only ones to roll up their sleeves and work

harder, but also those that did well last

year.KwaZulu–NatalHeadoftheEducationDe

partment, Dr. Nkosinathi Sishi,

said that schools that performed well will

be now facing a targeted 100% pass rate

in 2014.Sishi said those schools (that did well) will

again be given the task of adopting un

derperforming schools to mentor them so

that they can produce better results.

He said the department has decided to in

crease the average pass mark from 60%

to 77,4% for all schools.According to him, schools that perform un

der 35% will be regarded as schools at risk

in terms of the South African Schools Act.

“The principals of the schools that find

themselves in this category will have to

write to the head of the department

to declare a turnaround strategy and it

must be successful. All the schools that

have performed well in the province are

now forced to set a new target of a 100%

pass rate and 100% exemptions will be

now targeted. All subject advisors will also adopt the

schools that perform below the 77,4% av

erage pass rate. They will target specific

commercial subjects that did not do well

.” said Sishi. He said that maths and sci

ence are still the main targeted subjects.

“The department will continue with that

programme and the principals have to

mentoreachother.Ourtaskofdealingwith

the schools that lack resources is still

a process. We are dealing with supplying

resources to the schools that need them.

We had 3 200 schools that were supplied

with resources. We will continue with sup

plying the maths and science kits to

schools that need them,” he said.

School Governing Body (SGB) chairper

son, Reginald Chiliza, said they will have a

meeting where they will evaluate

the matric results.“We will decided on the role we can play

in helping the schools that underper

formed. We will do this jointly with the de

partment of education,” said Chiliza.

Schools to learnto grow foodJOANNE CARTY (CITIZEN JOURNALISM)

IN the 20 years that Food&Trees for Africa(FTFA) has been running Eduplant, thou-sandsofschoolshavelearnedhowtocreate

food-rich environments.“Our workshops help schools use the re-

sources that they already have to create per-maculture food gardens,” said Joanne Carty,EduPlant programme manager.

“One of these workshops is to be held atAshdownPrimarySchool inPietermaritzburgon 1 March 2014.”

TheEduPlantprogrammeismadepossiblethrough the generous and committed supportof Engen and The Woolworths Trust.

“Wecontinue tobe inspiredby thesuccess-ful implementation of these sustainable prac-tices, the one at Alabama Primary School inKlerksdorp over the past two years,” saidCarty.

“A garden is not a nice thing to have – it isessential! Unemployment and poverty is sogreat in our communities that many childrengohometoemptykitchens.Weuseschoolgar-dens as a teaching tool to encourage pupils tohave food gardens at home,” commentedproject leader Charlain Strydom.

The project at Alabama startedwhen theirteam attended the EduPlant Cluster work-shops, where they gained practical skills insustainable food gardening. SIMPHIWE MKHIZE

THE word drama refers toaction, motion, conflict andresolution of conflict.

The Oxford Dictionary of Englishdefines drama as an exciting, emo-tional, or unexpected event orcircumstance. Even breathing alonecan be a dramatic act, and so are theacts of walking, sleeping, sitting, dancing, talking, interacting, silenceand non-action.

There can be no story withoutdrama.Weallhaveourownstories totell. Ifeveryonehasastorythatcanbedescribed as dramatic, how muchmore about the story of the self-pro-claimed creator of the earthwhowastheWord that becameMan, the LordJesus Christ?

Hence, one must necessarilyexpectalotofdramainthestoryoftheauthorof lifewhograced thisEarth inthe form of a man they called JesusChrist. People are interested in dra-ma. If you tell ordinary people a storythat is fullofphilosophicalquotesandreferences, you are more than likelygoing to lose their interest, unlessthey are intellectually-inclined.

The majority of people are notnecessarily interested in philosophi-cal or highly intellectual matters. Ifyou want to tell them something thatis philosophical or requires them tothink deeply and interpret what theyarebeingtold, itmustbepresentedby

someoneforwhomtheyhaverespect,look up to or like.

Thestoryyouaretellingmusthavea clear storyline and be in simplifiedlanguage, (with more action thantalking if it is a film script), failingwhich you risk not being understoodby your reader or audience.

Christ uses parables, and hisfollowers are interested in hearingwhat he has to say, not so muchbecauseheiseasytofathomorunder-stand,butbecauseof thepersonheis, was or always be, as a God in man.

Obviously,theywouldnotbeinter-

ested to hear what he has to say if heisnot ahealerorhelper, if hedoesnotraise the dead, if he does not heal thesick, walks on sea water, orders thestorm and the wind to be quiet, andduplicates food for the multitudes toeat.

In the Holy Bible, his discipleswant to know why he uses parableswhenteaching, effectivelysuggestingthat He is risking not being under-stood by the ordinary folk. He repliesby saying that it does not matterbecause not many will see heavenafter all!

But he does explain some of theparables to his would be promotersand theseareauseful part of theHolyBible to explain what the good Lordwas saying to us.

The story of human life revolvesaround drama. We are born, we liveandwedie, orexitthestageoflife, andour children and their childrenremain behind to tell the story of ourlives. Christ’s storywas precisely likethat, and even more than that.

Hewasborn, helived, hedied, andhe was resurrected from the dead. And his followers from different

denominations the world over aretellingthestoryoftheircommonmas-ter as they seek to emulate him, andbe like him and represent him in theEarth. One can’t but celebrate thestoryof thisancientJesuwhoactuallycemented his family of Christianfollowers that are today spread allover the world, working in differentlanguages and operating withindifferent cultures.

I am fascinated by the dramaticevents and way of thinking that ispromulgatedby thisChristwhostart-ed and sustained this divine missionbefore and after he had died a physi-cal death on the cross, and buried forthreedays inaccordancewithproph-esy.

Hence he is worshipped, talkedabout and his representatives arepreachingandsinginghispraisesandhonour to the glory of his father, thealmighty God.

Why so muchdrama in the storyof Jesus Christ ?

SOUTH African football long left ICU,resides at cemetery Sipho Kekana. It is only the likes of Fikile Mbalula thatthink our game is in a healthy state. Theyneed to be forgiven for ignorance ontechnicaltactical issues. However, he has no right to ridicule ourfootballers while there are no facilities inthe townships. I think his office is as guiltyas all of us on the state of football in thiscountry.Gordon Igesund must take full responsibility for the performance of Bafana Bafana. It is interesting to note excuses comingfrom all corners about reasons of poorperformance.Generally, white football coaches aretreated differently in South Africa. Ishudder to think if it was Steve Kompela, for instance, who had been in charge ofBafana Bafana. He would have been calledall kinds of names. It is about time that people are judged ontheir talents and capacity instead of race/political connections.South Africa is a democracy and peopleneed to be treated with decency. Theminister had no business calling our foot

ballers ‘a bunch of losers’. How many timeshas he himself failed in life?Great sports people are the product ofgreat sports leaders. Mediocrity in footballpoints to mediocrity in both our SportsDepartment and Safa. Players cannotdevelop themselves – they need capableleadership. It is not possible to raise the dead. A newbeginning is needed. I have doubts if SouthAfrican football will get better. The thingis that we do not take ourselves seriously. You find people with no history in playingand coaching football at a decent leveloccupying technical positions. It can only happen in South Africa that youhave women as technical directors’ andtechnical committee chairpersons. Thesad reality is that politics plays a role inmost of our decisions.South African footballers are victims ofpoor football administration and education. The likes of Mr Igesund have beencoaching for many decades in this country. If they were really as good as most wantus to believe, they would have players inChampions League teams. A coach’s job isto educate and develop players. This process does not end at the age of16/17 years. It is ongoing until you retirefrom playing the game.Lastly, instead of criticising players andother people, it is important that we alltake responsibility for the state of footballin this country. This includes leaders at government level,Safa, club, school, communities levels andparents.Problems have never solved themselves. We need to learn the importance of doingthe work and talking less.Unzima lo mthwalo!

144 Houses for Sale Supporters wantRoger De Sa legacycompletely removed>> They think assistant Eric Tinkler should have gone as well, instead of taking over as caretaker coach

ALTHOUGH themajority of hard toplease Orlando Pirates die-hards,and some former players, were

relieved to see the back of Roger De Sawhorecentlyresigned, theystill feel theirwoes are not yet over.

Mostof themfeel that theDeSalegacyand influence should have been totallyremoved. They say the newly appointedcatertaker coach, Eric Tinkler, is “tooinexperienced or small” for a big teamlike the Mighty Bucs.

“It is always wise to clean the deckwhen you remove the head coach. Don’tleave his assistant or his right handmanbehind,”said formerPiratesstardefend-er and captain, Edward “Magents”Motale.

Another former captain, DanMalesela, said the frustrationswithinthesupporters might carry on.

“People are likely to say Tinkler wasDe Sa’s assistant from Bidvest Wits andwas brought by him to Pirates. Althoughthe new caretaker coach deserves a fairchance, supporters are unlikely to bepatient with him,” said Malesela.

Local passionate Pirates follower,CooperMkhize says to leave Tinklerwasrisky.

“Tinkler is De Sa’s graduate and hismentality of coaching is based on hismentor’s ideas. We are not yet safe orheading in the right direction,” saidMkhize.

Another former Pirates star, JerrySkhosana, said that players will have tostay strongandadopt apositivementali-ty because to wear the black and whitestrip is a challenge on its own.

“Personally, I don’t want to speakabout their technical staff. But I wouldlike to see players themselves playingtheir socks off and play like they are pos-sesed by demons. Pirates is a big teamwith a lot of history behind it. Playersneed to be reminded that Pirates richhistory and success are part andparcel,”said Skhosana.

The AmaBhakaBhaka PRO, MickeyModisane, says their game against thePretoria-based outfit will not be taken asan“acid”test fortheteamorforanybody, but will be treated with the respect itdeserves.

“It’s a normal league game. Our aimis to strive for excellent as usual but it isunfair for people to start pointing fingersor making assumptions about our cur-rent technical staff. They are workinghard, as always, with the wholeteam,”said Modisane.
