His body was found charred inside the tuckshop where he worked. His relative, who also called himself Assefa, said that the incident happened on Monday night, but the family only found out about it on Tuesday morning when a customer, who had come in to buy something, made a gruesome dis- covery. However, Assefa believes that thekillingwasintentionalastherewere traces of petrol outside the front door. He said that his brother had been work- ing at the tuckshop for the past two years. Residents who spoke to Echo said that although xenophobic attacks have become common in the area, no one knows what exactly happened. They said they were all alerted to the attack by the community member who had made the grisly discovery. “This is not the first incident of this nature in the area,” said a resident who did not want to be identified. At Imbali’s Unit 14 area, local tuck- shop owners complained that they were losing customers to foreign na- tional tuckshop owners because their stock was far cheaper. Ward councillor Bongani Dlomo said: “There have been a lot of xenophobic threats. However, the foreign nationals do not place them- selves in the area. We have spoken about the issue with community mem- bers several times. The ones who are complaining are the same people who make extra money by giving them [for- eign nationals] space to rent,” he said. Dlomo added that what makes it even more dangerous is that tuckshop owners lock their workers inside the tuckshops when they close their busi- nesses. “This person might have survived, if he was not locked inside,” he said. SAPS spokesperson Captain Thu- lani Zwane said that an empty, melted plastic container containing fuel was found outside the front door. “The motive for the attack is un- known and no arrests have been made. Police are investigating the circum- stances surrounding the incident”. The same people who are complaining, are the ones who make extra money by giving them [for- eign nationals] space to rent.

Debunking the popular myth about the revival of the ANCYL (PART 2)

Mandela Generation: myth andreality

THE modern day challengesconfronting young people arebetter captured by the recent

findings released by Statistics SouthAfrica.

It indicatedthat49%ofyoungpeo-ple are not employed, that 65.1% ofchildren up to the age of 18 live withfamilies that earn less than R650 permonth, that 60.2% of young peoplerangingbetween theageof18and25makeup themajority of the so–calledMandela generation.

This is therealityasopposedtothemyth. Thecarefulreadingofthe2011Census report reveals the reality isthat the significant majority of SouthAfricans are under 35 years of ageand live in households that receivelow–incomes, the majority of whomcome from rural areas who do noteven have a Grade 12 qualification.

In addition to that, the report hasunveiled how 35% of South African

minors live in households withoutany employed members, and that28.6% of them do not have sufficientfood. These challenges could beviewed as external from the ANCYouth League, but it is from this con-stituency that the ANCYL largely re-cruits its membership. The ANC hasalready identified triple challengesfacing our country, which are unem-ployment, inequality and poverty. Ifhistorically, thetaskof theANCYLhasbeen to re–inforce the mission of theANC, then it is in fighting these chal-lengesamongsttheyouththattheAN-CYL will attract to vote for the ANC.The reality of our country and thestateoftheyouthiswellpaintedbytheNational Development Plan; it is avery disturbing and humiliating por-trait. It is for these reasons that a callforaradicalchange, foramilitantandradical youth leadership for socialtransformation will find solaceamongst young people. So what was wrong with the MalemaBrigade?

The 24th National Congress of theANCYLmadeacorrect analysisof thechallenges faced by our country andthus correctly resolved on a strugglefor radical distribution of wealth be-neath the soil as echoed by the Free-dom Charter.

There is no doubt that this clarioncall has found support amongst theyouthwho are at the receiving end ofall the challenges faced by our coun-try. Theagitationsloganfor‘econom-icfreedominourlifetime’,andamoreprogrammatic response to it, makestheProgressiveYouthAllianceingen-eral, and specifically the ANCYL,more relevant than ever before. Inother words, the ANCYL’s twin tasksare (a) serving as body of opinionwithin the ANC and reinforcing itthroughrallyingyoungpeoplebehindits strategic vision and (b) champion-ing the interest of young people as away of responding to the alreadymentioned challenges confrontingthe youth to strengthenedour forma-tions.

However, the ANCYL has beenfaced with otherwise preventablechallenges such as: substitution andtherelegationofpolitical logicandro-bust, but comradely, debates toname–calling; politics of money andgreedy (sic); member of other mem-bers; ill-discipline, anarchy, faction-alism and side–stepping organisa-tional processes with impunity be-came the norm within the ANCYL.Additionally, the internal chal-lengesoftheANCYLalsoin-cluded the marginalisa-tion of politically–clear cadres infavour of (political-lyweak)newmem-bers who are easyprey for manipula-tion.

The ANCYL presented it-self as an independent opposi-tion from within the ANC andconducted the vicious attacktowards or dissolution ofthose holding different

views. Gate-keeping; divisions; ma-nipulation of membership; patron-age political accumulation (ie the useof the organisation to accumulatewealth to overcome personal incon-

veniencessuchasunem-ployment) and do-

ing everythingto underminethe ANC andits President,

Local journalistto host sportsday in Panorama>> Veteran sports journalist Jerry Barnes is back with a bang

WELL–TRAVELLED local vet-eransports journalist,JerryBarnes, will be officially

marking his return to Pietermaritz-burg by staging a community sportsday at the Panorama grounds.

After returning to the city afterspending eight years with a Johan-nesburg national newspaper, Barnessaw it fit andproper to announce it tohis community, friends, readers andfollowers.

“Today I have a family, a house, acareer and have a lot friends aroundthecity.Theonlypeoplethatmademeamanandawell–knownwriter, arethose in the greater Pietermaritz-burg community, my readersand my God. I came back lastyear, but I was still in and outof Gauteng, sorting out per-sonal matters. I’m now offi-ciallyandpermanentlybackin my hometown. Let’s getthe ball rolling again,” saidBarnes.

A former sportsman him-self, Barnes said that the daysprogram will be dominated bysports items, but there will be afunfairatmosphereforeverybody.

“The day will also be mixed witha couple of educational speakers.Theywill be speaking about the dan-gers of drugs, alcohol, HIV/Aids, ca-reers and sports,” he explained.

There will be also a speaker fromthelocalgovernmenttoexplainaboutthe next elections.

“Youwillbesurprisedtoknowthatthere are people out there who lackbasic information about elections– are we doing enough to educatethem?” he said.

Theevent is scheduled for28Sep-tember from 8am.

Thedaywillkickoffwithafunrun/walk, 2.5km around the neighbour-

hood.At10am,twolocaljuniorteamswill lock horns, followed by ladiessides betweenWard 34 and the localKZN Deptartment of Sports and Cul-ture.

There’s also a ‘local derby’ be-tween youth teams from PanoramaGardens and Panorama Park (themain road separates the teams).

Old Timers (O35) will face theMountain Rise police team.

With the event Barnes aims toraise

funds to replace broken windowsat the school and pay school fees forat least one needy child.

“Education is important in any-body’s life. I get sad when I see chil-dren from my neighbourhood goingtoschoolhungry,dirtyandalmostna-ked because at home, they are bat-tling and have a single parent,” saidBarnes.

Barnes is a formerNatalWitness/Echo, Daily/Sunday Sun senior jour-nalist and is currently freelancing.

“I trust thatwith thesupportofmycommunity, friends and the council-lorandchurchleaders inmyarea, wecan all make it work,” he said.

Barnes’ long cherished dream isto form a sports forum in Eastwood/Panorama, Civic Association, foot-ball, netball and athletics clubs forEastwood/ Panorama andGlenwood(Ward 34)

He says the priority onhis list is tostartanHIV/Aidscentre,acommuni-tyvegetablegardenandacommunity

help centre.“We can fool ourselves by tryingto run away from it, but the truthis HIV/Aids is here to stay. If weare not careful and wellequipped, the whole nationis going to die. People mustget tested, know their sta-tus and will live long andsafe.Wemust admit it,weare all affected in onewayor another. I just can’t be-lieve it. I am heart broken

and it is just unreal thatPanorama does not have at

least a clinic,” said Barnes.“There’s absolutely noth-

ingfor thecommunity.Noshops,no garage, no community sports

ground, no library, no internet cen-tre/cafe,nosatellitepolicestationandno high school,” he pointed out.

Hesaid therewasat leastachurchin the area, adding that he has a lotof things onhismind that hewants todo for his community, especially forthe children and old people.

“It’s sound crazy, but Iwill try anddo it all, bit bybit. Fornow, Iwill keepon dreaming big, very big ! .”
