They will be vying for the title of top Bee this Saturday, 23 August at the Eastwood hall in Eastwood. Media24 Local Newspapers KZN, owner of the local community newspaper titles Edendale Echo, Maritzburg Echo and Maritzburg Fever, has teamed up with the Office of the KZN Premier to roll out the popular competition through- out the province. The spelling bee originally started in Zululand, and is currently enjoying its fifth year there. Outstanding spellers from previously disadvantaged schools stand to walk away with thousands of rands in prizes, including cash for the top spellers and their teachers, books for top spellers and their schools, as well as goodie bags for all teachers and spellers. A former teacher himself, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said it is critical that the talent and potential of the youth is fully developed and harnessed to guarantee the continuous socio- economic development of the province and the country. “In doing so, we will ensure that we deal decisively with the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality,” he said earlier this year. Commenting on the official KZN Premier Spelling Bee Facebook page, pupils who will be taking part in the competition expressed confidence that they know all the pre-selected words which have been printed in the Maritzburg Fever and the two Echo papers. Grade 11 pupil Xolisile Makhathini from Sobantu Secondary School said, “Preparing for the competition has given me an added opportunity to broaden my English vocabulary. I am looking forward to Saturday.” Sobantu Secondary principal Hopewell Majozi said that he is fascinated by the whole idea. “There are words that we take for granted and I have been challenged to look up those words to find their true mean- ing. This competition has made us realize the true meaning of vocabulary.” The school’s head of department for languages, Nkosi Mdluli, said that with the arrival of social networks, using the correct English spelling has become a serious problem among pupils. “If you spell the word wrong, the meaning of the sentence might totally be distorted. We hope that the two pupils from our school will do exceptionally well and take top position,” he said with a laugh. The first leg of this year’s competition was held in Richards Bay three weeks ago, where 16-year-old Wendy Goqo from Mningi High spelled her way to the top spot. The South Coast event, held last weekend, was won by Siyabonga Shandu. On Saturday, spellers are required to take their birth certificates or ID books to the event and should be accompanied by no more than two supporters, one of which must be an English teacher. Pupils and schools who have not entered through official channels prior to the event will not be allowed to take part. For those schools who have entered, registration takes place at 8am sharp. Spellers need to be in the hall and seated by 8.30am. The competition starts at 9am. I dont agree with what COSAS is

asking for. I believe that publishing the

results is a form of motivation. It

motivates us to perform at our utmost best

and for us to achieve great results. It motivates

the pupil to work harder to get good admission results

    for university.

    Siphesihle Majola

    I agree with COSAS. The

    publication of results in the

    newspaper adds unneces

    sary pressure to pupils.

    Stopping the results

    from being published

    will also minimize the

    high rate of suicide

    cases by matric pupils

    who have failed.

    Sthandiwe Goge

    They shouldnt be published. They

should rather just be the schools pass rate

so that people can rate the school, not an

    individual.

    Nosipho Zondi

    They

    shouldnt

    publish the

    results in

    the newspa

    per. Its true

    that there are pu

pils who excel and they de

serve to be recognised. But at the

    same time, we cannot overlook

the minority, pupils who did not do

well. As much as it could be victo

ry to some, to others it could be

    the end of the world.

HE Congress of South African Students (COSAS) is continuing with

its call to the department of education to stop publishing matric re

sults innewspapers, as theybelieve that it violates the rightsofpupils.

Nompendulo Ngubane spoke to pupils at Edendale Technical school

    about the issue.

    Msunduzi employees in serious debt

    NQOBILE MTOLO

    >>[email protected]

    SOME Msunduzi Municipality employees are

    contemplating takingearly retirement inorder

    to pay off their debts.

Being in serious debt has affected these

    employees morale and productivity.

This was reflected in a report circulated at

last weeks Executive Committee (Exco) meet-

ing, and the facts are based on the 2012

    Msunduzi Municipality climate survey.

    In response, the municipalitys corporate

    services business unit has contemplated

inviting the National Credit Regulator (NCR)

and KZN Department of Economic Develop-

ment to conductworkshops on credit amnesty,

the national credit act and consumer rights.

    Thereportstatesthatthismoveisverymuch

needed, seeing that the municipality does not

    have an employee assistance programme.

Workshops were held in May this year but

there is a need for more workshops to accom-

    modate affected employees.

    Exco member councillor Judith Lawrence

said that the credit companies should be the

ones running these workshops for the whole

    community.

    Thisdoesnotonlyaffectworkerswithinthe

    municipality, but

    many people in our

    communities, she

    said.

    Msunduzi mayor

    Chris Ndlela said

    that if the credit

    companiesrunthese

    workshops, there

    will be a conflict of

    interest.

    They are

    running a business

    and they will always

    try and find ways of

    encouraging people.

    As business people,

    they only want a

    profit. If you cannot

    offer topaywhat you

    owe then they will

    find creative ways of

    forfeitingyourassets

    and sell them at

    prices which will

    eventually give them

    their money back,

    said Ndlela.

    The number of

    affected employees

    was not reflected.

The source added that the police pulled him off

the bridge as soon as they got a chance to grab him.

RTI spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the

N3 southbound lane was temporarily closed.

HE man alleged to have killed his

    fiance at Liberty Mall before

attempting suicide in July, plans to

plead not guilty to the murder.

    NkululekoNgubane (30) is chargedwith

stabbing his fiance Sinoliswe Mshengu to

death at Gate 2 at the mall where she

    worked manning a boom gate.

Afterwards, he allegedly jumped off the

nearby bridge onto the N3 and sustained

    multiple fractures.

    WarrantOfficerMiltonHadebethisweek

opposed his release on bail on grounds he

would interfere with witnesses. He told

    magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawonde that a

woman who witnessed the stabbing is still

    severely traumatised.

    Another person, from whom Ngubane

allegedly bought a knife inside the mall

    shortlybefore thestabbing, isstill tooafraid

He said Ngubane and Mshengu were

told that Ngubane had been paying lobola

    inside Ngubanes car.

    Ngubanes lawyer, Simphiwe Ngwenya,

suggested to Hadebe that bail conditions

    >>[email protected]

    YOUTH for Christ has been

    named the lead organization

    during the city-wide meeting

held to address the issues of

    children living on the street

    and subsequent criminal

    activities.

    YFC have been working

    withchildrenonthestreetsfor

    years now, and have

    established both a girls and

    boys shelter in the city.

    They will take charge in

    helping the children off the

    streets and reuniting them

    with their families or finding

    them alternate places of

    safety.

    Representatives from reli-

    gious organizations, law

    enforcement officers, the

    Msunduzi Municipality and

    generalmembersof thepublic

    were present at the meeting

held at the City Hall recently.

    Member of the Msunduzi

    Municipality Executive

    Committee, Jabu Ngobu, said

that together with the help of

    all parties concerned, a

    solution can be brought

    forward to help address the

    issues at hand.

    Koos Voster, chairman of

    Businesses Fighting Crime,

    said that the city, together,

    needs to think seriously about

    solutions to keep children off

    the streets.

    We need businesses to

    supportthisinitiativeandhelp

us to help them address the

    situation.

    Regional Director of YFC,

    Sally Mann, said that the

    organization has had a great

    success rate in reforming

    children and taking them off

    the street.

    It is not about giving

    thousands of rands towards

    an organization. Its about

    showing support to the

    children.

    Although there was a

    strong message to keep in

    mind that the children living

on the streets should be treat-

ed with dignity, the reality is

that they are often under the

    influence of drugs and there

    have been numerous reports

    of them terrorising motorists

    and the public at large.

    Thesolutiontocurbingthis

would be not to phone the

    police but rather an organiza-

tion that can get them off the

    street. The public was also

    once again encouraged not to

    hand out money as this

    promotes drug addiction.

They are not the scum of

    society, they are children.

    They have not chosen the

    streets. They have no other

    choice, said Tom Hewitt,

    founder of Umthombo Street

    Childrens Project in Durban.

    Hewitt said that there

needs to be a strong strategy

put in place with vested inter-

    ested from asmany people as

    possible.

    There isnoquickfix to this

    problem. You need to offer

    them an alternate lifestyle.

Getting them off the streets is

    only the beginning, said

    Hewitt.

    KZN on high alert

    for Ebola Virus

    NQOBILE MTOLO

    T

    HE KZN Department of

Health is on high alert for

    an outbreak of the Ebola

    Virus Disease (EVD).

    KZN Department of Health

    spokesperson,DesmondMotha,

    said that the department has

    stepped up Ebola precautions

and a number of local health

    experts have been trained on

    howtotackle thedeadlydisease.

He said that training is ongo-

ing and that health officials will

    haveprotective clothingonat all

    times when treating Ebola.

Motha said that there has not

yet been any reports of people

infected with the Ebola virus in

    the province. He said that

    stringent checks are carried out

at entry points to KZN and the

    country.

    We are ready. Health minis-

    terAaronMotsoaledihaschosen

    Addington Hospital in Durban

as one of the 11 hospitals in the

    country which will treat Ebola.

The hospital has a special isola-

    tionunitwitheightwardswhere

    Ebolapatientswillreceivemedi-

    cal attention.

    We have trained doctors,

    radiographers and nurses who

    have been equipped with the

    skills to handle infection

    control, said Motha.

    TheEcho has gathered that a

    2006 report from the KZN

    Department of Health reveals

    that in the uMgungundlovu

    District, there is a committee

    whichwasformedtopreparefor

    patients who have a Lethal

    Communicable Disease (LCD).

The list of LCDs include Crime-

    an-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever

    (CCHF),SevereAcuteRespirato-

    ry Syndrome (Sars), bird flu,

    Marburg Fever, Ebola fever and

the Lassa and Rift Valley fever.

    The report states that this

    committee is based at Greys

    Hospital.

    On Monday it was reported

    that a 37-year-oldman suspect-

ed of having Ebola tested nega-

    tive for the disease.

It has been reported that the

man, who has not been identi-

fied, worked as a health and

    safetyofficerinamineinLiberia.

The countries hit by Ebola in-

    clude Liberia, Sierra Leone,

    Guinea and Nigeria.

    How is Ebola transmitted?

    Ebola is introduced into the

    human population through

    close contact with the blood,

    secretions,organsorotherbodi-

ly fluids of infected animals. In

    Africa, infection has been docu-

    mented through the handling of

    infected chimpanzees, gorillas,

    fruit bats, monkeys, forest

    antelope and porcupines found

ill or dead in the rainforest.

    Ebola then spreads in the

    community through human-to-

    human transmission, with

    infection resulting from direct

    contact (through broken skin or

    mucous membranes) with the

    blood, secretions, organs or

    other bodily fluids of infected

    people,andindirectcontactwith

    environments contaminated

    with such fluids.

    mourners have direct contact

with the body of the deceased

    personcanalsoplaya role in the

    transmission of Ebola. (Source:

    Signs and symptoms

    Symptoms include the

    sudden onset of fever, intense

    weakness, muscle pain,

    headache and sore throat. This

    is followed by vomiting,

    diarrhoea, rash, impaired

    kidneyand liver function, and in

    some cases, both internal and

    external bleeding.

    People are infectious as long

    as their blood and secretions

    contain the virus.

It is also important to note

    that, after contracting Ebola, it

can take up to 21 days to show

    symptoms of the disease,

    MSUNDUZI municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi

was recently elected president of the Institute

of Local Government Management (ILGM) of

South Africa at a national conference held

    recently.

The institute was established 17 years ago

and its predecessor was the Institute of Town

Clerks. Itsmission is to promote excellence in lo

    cal government management.

We have just had a national conference

where all provincial chapters were represented.

The ILGM elects the national working commit

    tee,which is thepresident,deputypresident, the

treasurer, the secretary and the deputy

secretary. Then you have the national executive

    committeewhichcomprisesof thosefivepeople

    plustworepresentativeswhicharetheprovincial

    secretary and the provincial chairperson,

    explained Nkosi.

Nkosi said that he had been ILGMs deputy

president for just over a year.

In terms of the constitution, I will be the

    ILGMpresidentfortwoyears.Thepositioncarries

with it a lot of responsibilities and we have

    alreadybeenmandatedtotackleserioustechni

cal issueswithin the sphere.Wehave to harness

    and formalise the relationship between

    ourselves, South African Local Government

    Association (SALGA) and Cooperative Govern

ance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) nationally

    and provincially, said Nkosi.

He said that ILGM is a professional body

recognised by the South African Qualifications

Authority (SAQA). Nkosi said that at the

conference, it was agreed that the national

    ethics committee be established.

This will deal with those who act in an

unethical manner within the profession. Once

the national ethics committee has been

established, it will be cascaded down to all

provinces to tackle unethical issues at a

    provincial level, said Nkosi.

    Breast milk is

    the best milk

    NICOLE JOHN

    >>[email protected]

    I

N an effort to reduce the child

    mortality rate, the provincial

    Department of Health has

    launched the KwaZulu-Natal

    Initiative for Breastfeeding

    Support (KIBS), together with the

    University of KwaZulu-Natal and

    the Elma Foundation.

    Launched during international

    Breastfeeding Awareness Week,

    KIBS aims to improve exclusive

    breastfeeding rates in theprovince

by not only teaching women about

    its importance, but also

    encouraging them to donate their

    breastmilk to beused tohelp other

    children.

    According toVictoriaMubaiwa,

    the departments manager for

    maternal care and women, as

many as 500 babies will be saved

    annually if mothers across the

province respond to the call to

breastfeed their babies for as long

    as possible.

    KIBS will increase access to

human milk for sick and small

    neonates in KZN by 2017.

    Theproject also seeks to change

    the mindset of breastfeeding,

    increaseitssocialacceptabilityand

    create awareness about human

    milk banking within KZN

    communities. Milk banks will be

    opened across the province in

    various hospitals.

    There are currently five banks

    already opened.

    Speaking at the recent launch

    was Anna Coutsoudis from the

    department of paediatrics at

UKZN, who said that the more

    mothers that take tobreastfeeding,

the more donors there will be.

    Most people have never heard

    of donating breast milk, creating

awareness is the only way we will

    change minds and lead people

    awayfrombabyformula,shesaid.

    Sister Shanila Moodley,

manager of the maternity unit at

    NetcareStAnneshospitalsaidthat

    the benefits of breastfeeding

    shouldalwaysbeexplainedandthe

    practice encouraged for mothers.

    Unlike milk formula, breast

    milk contains nutrients and

vitamins that are important for the

    healthy mental and physical

    development of your baby, said

    Moodley.

    Breast milk also contains

    antibodiesthathelpprotectagainst

    dangerous illnesses, including the

    twomost common causes of infant

    mortality worldwide - diarrhoea

    and pneumonia.

    Moodley added that breastmilk

is far superior to milk formula, no

matter how natural or high quality

    the formula may be.

    Breastfeeding also has long-

term health benefits for the baby.

    Infants who are breastfed often

    have lower blood pressure and

    cholesterol and reduced rates of

obesity and type two diabetes. In

    addition, breastfeeding may help

reduce the risk of the mother

    developing breast and ovarian

    cancer in later life.

    We encourage mothers to

    breastfeed exclusively for six

months following the birth of their

    baby before introducing other

sources of nutrition. It is important

to begin within the first hour of

birth if possible, because this is

    when the mothers body produces

    colostrum, a thick creamy liquid

    thatishighinnutrientsandiseasily

    digestible for babies. Colostrum

    encourages the cleansing of the

    babys intestines, which helps

    prevent jaundice, she said.

    Moodley emphasized that HIV-

    positive mothers who are breast-

feeding do not give their children

any other liquids or foods, as

    exclusivebreastfeedingforuptosix

months can lead to a significantly

    reduced risk of mother-to-child

    transmission of the virus.

    She added that the Netcare

    Foundation has supported the

    South African Breast milk Reserve

    (SABR) by collecting breast milk

    from donor mothers for distribu-

tion to infants of mothers who are

    unable to breastfeed.

    Breast milk banks are benefi-

cial as not all mothers are able to

    producetheirownbreastmilk.The

more bankswe have, the better, as

    breastfeeding can reduce the

    morbidity and mortality of new-

    borns, said Moodley.

    PMB man named 2014

    Weigh-Less man of the year

    NQOBILE MTOLO

    >>[email protected]

    P

    IETERMARITZBURG

    resident Mthoko Ndlovu has

    been named Weigh-Less

man of the year for the KZN

    regional competitionafter losinga

    whopping 40 kilograms in eight

    months.

    I joinedWeigh-Lessbydefault.

    Last year September my wife

suggested that we join a weight

loss programme and so we joined

    Weigh-Less. We started jogging

    and resorted to healthier eating

    habits, said Ndlovu.

He said that in the first month,

he did not see any results, but as

time went by, people close to him

    started complementing his leaner

    frame.

    I wanted to lose weight

through a natural process and not

    throughsurgery.Ourdiet changed

    drastically.

We had to buy brown rice

which is something we had never

    eatenbefore. Insteadofbuying full

    cream milk and sweetened

yoghurt, we opted for skim milk

    and fat free yoghurt.

    When I started the

    programme, Iweighed124.6kg. It

    is alwaysbetter toplanyourmeals

    in advance because when you

shop on an empty stomach, you

get tempted to buy all the fatty

    food, explained Ndlovu.

    Hesaid thathis formofexercise

is running and as his body

    gets leaner and stronger, he

    increases his running distance.

However, his wife who started the

journey with him had to stop

running due to a knee injury.

I knew that I could make it.

Once you start to lose weight you

become motivated. I drink a lot of

water and stick to a healthy diet.

    There is no magic trick.

    Right now I run about 12km a

day. I have even started my own

    vegetable garden at home. I

    reachedmygoalweightinMayand

    sincethenIhavebeenmaintaining

    my weight, said Ndlovu.

    Before his weight loss, Ndlovu

    would fit intoa3XLt-shirtbutnow

wears a medium to large size.

Every time I look atmy photos

before the weight loss, I realize

that Ihavecomea longway. If I can

do it, anyone can. I am happy that

    I lovemyself enough to takecareof

    my body.

I have more energy than be-

fore and I am glad I made this

    decision, said Ndlovu.

    AMIL UMRAW

    LOCAL superstar Vincent Bones has

captivated the country with his astound-

    ing performances onSouthAfrican Idols

    this year.

    Bones (29) captured the imaginations

of his ever-growing fan base with his

    heart-rending rendition of Miguels

Adorn this past weekend on SA Idols.

    Originally fromEldorado Park, Bones

took the train from Johannesburg to

Pretoria at the age of 12, after hismother

and uncle died. There, he roamed the

streets of Sunnyside where he lived for

quite some time, eating leftovers from

    rubbish bins.

Randall Abrahams, who got him to

sing another chorus to the wild applause

of the audience, said that he did really

well at an important phase in the

    competition.

    Gareth Cliff expressed his excitement

    for Boness future performances.

Very excited to hearwhat else youre

going to do. That was very, very good.

Youre a great singer, said Cliff.

Celebrating National Marriage Week with a local seminar

    NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

    >>[email protected]

    GEARING up for National

    MarriageWeekwhich runs from1

to 7 September, the South African

    Marriage and Life Academy will

next week host a three day

    marriage seminar at Ilawu

    conference centre.

    The South African Marriage

    and Life Academy was founded

    by Pietermaritzburgs own Bongi

Mhlongo last year, in a bid to

    provide marital literacy classes

    for unmarried people and a

    marriagecourse for thosewhoare

    married.

    She has previously written

    books on the foundations of

    marriage and parenting.

    With the country celebrating

    nationalmarriageweek in the first

week of September, we want to

kick-start the week by having a

    couples seminar. The seminarwill

run from 6pm to 11pm from 29 to

    31August at the Ilawu conference

    centre in Commercial road. We

    want people to celebrate their

    marriages.

    Septemberisspringandall the

flowers are blooming and we also

    want marriages to spring into

    greatness. We want to encourage

couples to work on their marriag-

es, so they can leave a legacy for f

    uture generations to come.

    Mhlongo said that the country

has a high divorce rate and more

    people are choosing to cohabitate

rather than risk being in unhappy

    marriages because they have lost

    the basic foundations of love.

    The seminar is R700 per

    couple and people may make

    bookings by emailing her at
