POTHOLES continue to dominatePietermaritzburg streets.

The ward audits report in therecent Executive Committee(Exco)agendashowsthattherearea number of identified potholeswhich need to be repaired by theMsunduzi municipality in variouswards.

Msunduzimunicipalityspokes-person, Madeleine Jackson-Plaatjies,urgedresidents toreportpotholes to themunicipal call cen-tre.

She said that the pothole repairpilot project, which was intro-duced last year February, was aonce off project for three months.

“This has since been complet-ed. Potholes are attended to as anon-going exercise.

“Potholes are aworrying factoreverywhere and develop due tomoisture penetrating into the un-derlying road layers and washingout fines which are gravel materi-als in road layers that are less than2mm.

“Water or moisture is the mainenemyof the road, that iswhypot-holes develop everywhere during

the summer rainy season.“The other challenge is that

potholes cannot be effectivelyrepaired when wet, or if there ishigh moisture content in the roadlayers,” explained Jackson-Plaatjies.

She said that there are expen-siveproactivemaintenanceactivi-ties that need to be continuouslyadministered toa roada fewyearsdown the line after construction. These include surface overlay, crack sealing, removal of weakspots, eradicating over-loading ofroads through management ofoverloaded heavy vehicles and ef-fective storm-water control.

“All these actions ensure that aroad lasts longer with minimumroad defects. Unfortunately, themunicipal roads in the currentform are very old and the above-mentioned interventionswere notcarried out in the past. The roadnetwork needs major rehabilita-tion work which will cost millionsof rands.

“Currently, the Roads andTransportationunit is updating itsRoad Asset Management Plan(RAMP),whereall roads conditionare being assessed. This plan, whencomplete, will quantifywhat

I read my story(Dedicated to the May 7, 2014 elections)I read my contemporary history like a bookIn newspapers.Does it make me proud or sad?A bit of both is not so bad.My inquisitive and concerned eyes look for anythingThat threatens the status quo,Like a paranoid conservative Afrikaaner politician,My heart pumps louder when the headlinescreams:It pounds at the mere mention of the nameNumsa or No Vote exministers or Julius Malema.Do they make me proud or scared? What does their presence say about our country, our people? Are we highly democratic? Yes.Are we volatile? Yes.Do we have enduring multiparty democracy?Yes.Are we corrupt, ethnocentric old racists? Yes.Are we incapacitated and wanting in proficiencystandards? Yes.Are we like greedy former slaves tasting freedom for the first time? Yes.Do we rest on our laurels? Yes.Do we have world class institutions of accountability and credible courts? Yes.Have we failed our youths in so far as jobcreation is concerned? Yes.Is there uniformity in service delivery standardsat local level? No.Is the developmental agenda still alive? Yesand No.Are we impacting on the poorest of the poor?Yes and No.Is the rise of the black petty middle class stillgaining momentum like before? No and Yes.Is the person who is writing these words a paranoid old man? No and Yes.No because Numsa, and the No Vote Exministers and Julius Malema are a reality.Yes because it is not wrong when a nation’sdemocratic culture endures. No because South Africans have not shed thecolour of their skins.Yes and no because he still feels like there will

be a time whenSomeLess democratic,Less tolerant,Less engaging,More brutal than Bob,More quarrelsome –Someone who may not come from Numsa,And certainly not from No Vote exministers –But someone more Julius in his Malemaliketendencies –Someone who can show the old guard the doorAs he takes centre stage on the political dancefloorVomiting scorn at capitalistsAs he devours their birthday cakesAnd downsTheir expensive alcoholic beverages. My black nightmares are Numsa, the No Voteexministers and Julius Malema :My gut says this may be the time the revolution begins to go astray,Because mutualjealousy is on the way,This may be the moment we will look back andsay:If only we could keep Mandela’s unifying magic,We would not be as fragmented as we are becoming,Vulnerable preys to neocolonialism The world’s third class citizensBeyond redemption? Are we becoming or unbecoming victims ofA colonial mentality we have known?Numsa, No Vote exministers, Julius Malema:We stand at the crossroadsAnd we will make our choices again.I will read my story again and again as I growolder,I do not know if I will always like my contemporary history or not.I do not know if our political gains will soon beoverwhelmedLike the sea devouring its sands.I read with tearful eyes sometimes, but I stillread theseNewspaper headlines that bark at my contemporary historyLike hungry dogs looking for food from the richman’s dust bin.

THABO DLADLATALKING FOOTBALL

The reality of life

TE-HUIS, the bumpy fields in ImbaliTownship, may not be well known tomany people in this country.

These are the fields where manyfamous names in South Africanfootball took their first steps.

It is sad thatmany of these football-ers will mention all other big andfamous clubs and institutions except aplace that gave them a sound founda-tion for their football careers in theinterviews.

Well, this is a reality of life.Sometimes we even disown our

parents once we are rich and famous.Te-Huis did not only set up players intheir football careers, big coaches alsotook their first steps in this humblearena.

Pietermaritzburg should be proudthatKatzNaidoowill be the first coachto takeupamajor coachingposition ina foreign country.

Goa, an Indian state, will be thedestination. It is not every day that aSouth African is recruited by a foreigncountrytoestablishaCoachEducationDepartment, youth development cen-tres and football academies.

It is not just anyone that can beentrusted with such a major assign-ment. It takesmanyyearsof dedicatedstudying, researchandexperimentingto qualify for such challenges.

I have no doubt inmymind that hisemployers got the best candidate.

I doubt that if it was not for Katz,Bryce Moon would have reached highfootball levels. He used to drive toImbali with a 10-year old Moon everyafternoon.Heworkedinthiscentre fortwo years without getting any money.Katz understood the importance ofknowledge over money.

This was also a period when finan-cially, themanfell in thecategoryof thepoor. Credit should also go to his wifeJessNaidoo, aformerdedicatedschoolteacher. She supported her husbandduring difficult times. Later, he was torunanU12SimbaProjectwith the lateNkosi Njilo. They were magnificent, producinga team thatwon thenation-al championship in this age group.

There are very few people who arededicated to their professions likeKatz.

I have shared a roomwith thismanin many SAFA coaching courses andworkshops. He works extremely hard

and always gives everything in anytask assigned to him.

Hewouldsometimeswakemeupat3am to discuss a particular section ofwork. Katz Naidoo is a good exampleof what can be achieved with a goodwork ethic and passion.

Young people in this province willbenefit if they were to learn from thisexample.

Life prepared Katz for this assign-ment over the last 20 years. It was inthe 90’s when he first joined us atTe-Huis. He also joined the Universityof Natal as a first team soccer coach. This was a team that producedSiyabongaNdlovu - a player thatwenton to star for Mamelodi Sundowns,Moroka Swallows and Lidoda Duva.During this period, the man enrolledfor a sports administration diploma. He also bought a computer and be-came a master in every aspect of thisgadget.

Personally, I have learned so manythingsfromthelifeofthishumbleman.Katz’s life is proof that anything is pos-sible, provided you are prepared tomake sacrifices.

He has paid his dues in footballcoaching.

Iwould like to take this opportunityon behalf of all former Te-Huis mem-bers towishKatzall thebest inhisnewjob.Wehavenodoubtthathewillmakeallofusproudthroughthequalityofhiswork in Goa.

Ihopethisalsoinspiresmanyyoungcoaches and players in this town tostrive for excellence.
