They will be vying for the title of top Bee this Saturday, 23 August at the Eastwood hall in Eastwood. Media24 Local Newspapers KZN, owner of the local community newspaper titles Edendale Echo, Maritzburg Echo and Maritzburg Fever, has teamed up with the Office of the KZN Premier to roll out the popular competition through- out the province. The spelling bee originally started in Zululand, and is currently enjoying its fifth year there. Outstanding spellers from previously disadvantaged schools stand to walk away with thousands of rands in prizes, including cash for the top spellers and their teachers, books for top spellers and their schools, as well as goodie bags for all teachers and spellers. A former teacher himself, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said it is critical that the talent and potential of the youth is fully developed and harnessed to guarantee the continuous socio- economic development of the province and the country. “In doing so, we will ensure that we deal decisively with the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality,” he said earlier this year. Commenting on the official KZN Premier Spelling Bee Facebook page, pupils who will be taking part in the competition expressed confidence that they know all the pre-selected words which have been printed in the Maritzburg Fever and the two Echo papers. Grade 11 pupil Xolisile Makhathini from Sobantu Secondary School said, “Preparing for the competition has given me an added opportunity to broaden my English vocabulary. I am looking forward to Saturday.” Sobantu Secondary principal Hopewell Majozi said that he is fascinated by the whole idea. “There are words that we take for granted and I have been challenged to look up those words to find their true mean- ing. This competition has made us realize the true meaning of vocabulary.” The school’s head of department for languages, Nkosi Mdluli, said that with the arrival of social networks, using the correct English spelling has become a serious problem among pupils. “If you spell the word wrong, the meaning of the sentence might totally be distorted. We hope that the two pupils from our school will do exceptionally well and take top position,” he said with a laugh. The first leg of this year’s competition was held in Richards Bay three weeks ago, where 16-year-old Wendy Goqo from Mningi High spelled her way to the top spot. The South Coast event, held last weekend, was won by Siyabonga Shandu. THE MEC for Health, Dr SibongiseniDhlomo, said that there is still roomfor improvement on the

UMgungundlovu district pilot sites that wereappointed to head the National HealthInsurance (NHI), a health insuranceprogramme introduced by government.

Dhlomo had embarked on an NHI roadshow, where he made visits to some of thedistrict pilot sites to check if standards arebeing met.

The visits made by the MEC includedRichmond clinic, Grange clinic, Edendale andGrey’s hospital.

He said that the aim of his visit was also tocompilealistofchallengesthattheclinicswerefacing

“Iwill say that I’mnot happybecausenoneof them are at 100% at the moment. TheRichmond clinic managed a 60% for thefirst time. The second time they earnedthemselves a 62% followed by a 71% rating.

I’m not only there to check and judge, butI’m also availing myself to help where I seethere are still challenges.

“I have told them that theymust informmeif they encounter challenges along the way.

“I can proudly say that as the department,we have made some progress with theseclinics. We have clinics that now owngenerators and have their own doctors.Checking means also looking at minorthings. I’m talking about ensuring that thereis toilet paper, brooms, signage and moreinside the premises for the patients,” said theMEC.

DhlomowasoverwhelmedwiththeWhizz-kidsAcademyat Edendalehospital, whichhereferred to it as one of the biggest war rooms.

“I will give back to this hospital by comingback and spending some time with theyoungsters who are part of the academy,” hesaid.

Whenaskedwhowouldmakesure that theNHIpilotsitesareuptostandard, hesaidthereis national team tasked with that role.

“They are the ones to monitor, check andreport.TheNHIprogramme isalreadyonandwearepositive that allwillwork accordingly,”he said.

The uMgungundlovu district pilot sites areImpendle, Richmond, UMshwathi, UMkham-bathini, UMngeni, Mpofana and Msunduzi.

19Take care ofthe rootsIS it a correct assessment that anumber of South African footballcoaches are world class?

The top football clubs in theEuropean leagues are presentlybusy trading players. These clubsarepayingR700millionandmorefor players.

What is preventing our profes-sional clubs and footballers frombenefiting from this pot of gold? Are they not also in business as itis always claimed in the media? The top football nations haveplayers featuring in the EuropeanChampions League.

It is said that if you take care ofthe roots, the plant will take careof the rest. There isa fundamentalaspect which is required toimprove young players’ develop-ment, coaching or teaching andeducation. The recent eThekwiniunder-19 tournament has shownthatwehaveseriousdevelopmen-tal issues.Ourplayersaredistinct-ly lacking in skills, intelligence, physical and psychologicalattributes required to become aprofessional footballer.

These failings take placebetween eight to 16 years of ageand prevent our boys and girlsfrom reaching world class levels.

We need to accept that there isamountain that has to be climbedby South African football. Thesituation is farmorecomplex thanmany of us realise. It will take lotsof effort from everyone involved.Presently, politics is also nothelping the situation. We need tolearn that one is too small anumber to achieve anything ofsignificance. We need to acceptthat not everyone will be yourfriend. However, it is important towork with everyone since talentsometimes resides in those whoare not your comrades.

It will also help some of our

young players to immigrate toother countries for their footballeducation. This paid hugedividends in the academic sphereto those who went abroad duringtheapartheidera.Itisarealitythatcountries like Belgium, Switzer-land, Argentina, and Ghana, tomention a few, are doing well inyouthdevelopment. TheproblemisthatBlackSouthAfricansinpar-ticular prefer familiar environ-ment.

There is no doubt that childrenin the Southern hemisphere havemore football potential than therest. It is going to take us manymore years to catch up withEuropean nations.

There are things that do notneed money to be done properly.Wearegreatly lacking insoft skillslike commitment, dedication, focus etc. Things will remain thesame as long as the culture ofentitlement remains.

Lastly, it is interesting that thePSL is starting an under-19programme.Whathappenswhena club gets relegated to lowerdivisions? It would be nice if thiswere to be extended to FirstDivision clubs?

It is also unfortunate that wealways start things at the top. It islike starting a high school in avillage where there are nopre-schools and primary schools.

The development of SouthAfrican kids in sports lack a cleardirection.

Mzansi likelyto witness adream final

>> Pirates and Chiefs show great form

WHILE some might say it is likecounting chickens before they arehatched, others think it is wise forMzansi soccer followers to startbudgeting for their dream final.

If the formdisplayedby the twoSoweto giants, Orlando PiratesandKaizerChiefs, duringtheirlastweekend’s MTN8 first leg semifinals, isanythingtogoby, thenthecountrymightaswellgetreadyfora super dream final.

Last Saturday, Chiefs travelledto North West’s Royal Bafokengstadium to honour their first legMTN 8 fixture against PlatinumStars, and won 2-0.

Technically, Amakhosi made itdifficult fortheirNorthWestbasedopponents by scoring two awaygoals. Chiefs goals were bothscored by George Maluleke.

On Sunday at FNB stadiumStarswill be visitingAmakhosi forthe Wafa Wafa second leg.

It is clear from all angles thatthe visiting Dikwena will find itdifficulttodealwiththehomeside, and the first leg score margin willhave a bad effect mentally.

IfChiefscanaffordtoonlyscoreone more goal and park the bus(defend in numbers), Stars willfind it totally impossible to changethe margin.

Chiefs defender Siboniso Gaxasaidthat theirwinawaywasgood, but the work is not yet finished.

“Itwasamotivatingwinandwe

cansay thatourone foot isalreadyinthefinal, but inordertobehomeanddry, weneedtowinagainwitha convincing margin.

“We need to forget about ourlead and carry on working hard,”said Gaxa.

Stars coach Allan Freese saidthat his team need to changeeverything in order to overcometheir defeat.

“Our attitude and game planneed to change.”

Last Saturday, Pirates alsoplayed away at Milpark’s BidvestWits and won 2-0.

Their goals were scored bycaptain and defender SiyabongaSangweni and another defender,Thabo Matlaba.

On Saturday night, Wits willvisit Pirates in their backyard,Orlando stadium.

Sangweni this week said histeam will have to show big heartand the hunger that they showedagainst Wits during the first leg.

“If we can carry on playing theway we played against them atMilpark, and also score anothertwo at home, we will definitelymake it to the final,” saidSangweni.

Sangweni also feels if hisstrikers can learn to be ruthless infront of the goal, their assignmentagainst Wits will be much easier.
