Which Two Of These Lovely Young Ladies, Became This Years JuniorAttendants?

On Friday Evening of May 24th, I went along with all these lovely young ladies to the selection evening at The Cottage in Cromer to see which two of these 19 girls would become the 2013 Cromer Carnival Junior Attendants. All of the young ladies, that I spoke to while photographing them, gave me the impression they were up for the job of representing Cromer very well, during our ever popular Carnival in August.During the evening each girl was invited up to chat to the Judges who did their interviewing brilliantly. They were Richard Batson of the EDP,

Tracey Barlett (from Hair Studio 1) and Gail Green ( from the Kings Head). With the exception of one particular year, since I first set up the original Crab Line, Cromer Carnival has always had a great mix of young people in the Royal Party. Michelle Hedge welcomed all the girls as they turned up and did a grand job organising everyone for a jolly goodevening that everyone seemed to enjoyed very much. After around two long hours the judges announced who the lucky winners were..

Hi Philip,On 23rd June, I will be climbing Mount Snowdon to raise money for the Alzheimers society. With me that day will be Barry Foulser, Sandra foulser, Nathan Foulser and Jennifer Armstrong, (and a big bag of jelly babies :)After doing the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge last year, I wanted to carry on with my fund raising efforts and Snowdon seemed the next likliest challenge on my list of many I would like to do in the future. Snowdon is 3,560ft above sea level and I am hoping the weather is on my side that day and I get to see some amazing views.I am raising money for Alzheimers society because it is a cause very close to my heart, as my wonderful Nana, Iris Smith, pictured with me below, suffers from this horrible illness.

Since last October she has been in a residential care home which

specialises in the care of elderly sufferers with alzheimers. The care is excellent and she is being very well looked after but by doing this climb and raising this money I know it is going to a worthwhile cause. If any one would like to support me in this challenge and this fantastic charity they can visit my just giving page : www.justgiving.com/victoria-craske or there is a collection tin at Hair Couture, 21 Mount Street, CromerBest wishesVictoria CraskeVictoria is 23yrs old and works at Hair Couture, Cromer.Dear Lis & Philip,Let me recall my shopping experience in Cromer last Friday teatime.I first tried Homebase, where I found a helpful young man and we arrived at the conclusion they did not sell damp proofing rolls.I went to Travis Perkins at approx one minute to five, parked my car and walked into the main service area, pleasantly said to the two chatting, members of staff : hello can you help me find some damp proofing rolls. One stood and looked at me as if I was an alien (I think they have

From The Editor This years Cromer Carnival Royal Party is a group of really lovely young ladies who I have no doubts about them doing a brilliant job of representing Cromer during the Carnival weeks.I take my hat off to all those involved in deciding which ones would be the best to represent Cromer this year, as it is never an easy task deciding who to go for and never could be described as an easy job selecting from all those who put themselves forward. I would like to wish all the members of this years Carnival Royal Party a wonderful summer of fun and hard work.In regard to those who were not selected, may I encourage them to enter the competition again next year and thank them all for entering this year.Despite there being no Red Arrows, this year, on Carnival Day, the line up of planes that are organised for this year, do look very good and well worth getting yourself set up to enjoy yet another great Cromer Carnival. Thanks also to those numerous members of the committee, who always pull off a great week, full of fun for everyone.I draw readers attention to my comments on Page 8 in reference to Mundesley not beingable to display the blue flag on the beachThis years Blue Flag entrants had to meet an even stricter water quality standard to

qualify, covering quality over the past four years. Unfortunately, because of a low quality reading in 2010, caused by a storm surge, this meant that Mundesley beach could not be considered for a Blue Flag this year. However, their facilities remain excellent, as has been the water quality since 2010, as is shown by its current Recommended rating from the Good Beach Guide. Is this not like failing an MOT in July 2010 and then, even though it has been repaired, your car cannot be allowed on the road in 2013 for you to drive, because it failed the test in 2010.Work that one out and let me know please.

Dear Philip,Thank you for your interest in the Holt Road Campaign. An interesting point made in the issue 011 letters by Mr. Duffield ( Page 4 )I have made enquiries through the Felbrigg House Manager Mr. Sandham, to establish the number of visitors to the house & park.He gave me a number in excess of 70,000 cars per season. However he emphasises the fact that this number relates to visitors to the house & does not include thousands more that use the place for picnics, dog walking and those attending the many events they have during the season. The woodland also includes the opportunity to walk the paths through the estate. On the last Bank Holiday the traffic queue did extend from the junction back to the entrance of the Hall and this situation continued through-out the afternoon.Below are some photographs taken at the location mid afternoon on 5th May.

Note the length of the queue & the large goods vehicle waiting at the junction - the driver had been queuing for over 20 minutes from the bend after the Hall.

It is not a situation to encourage visitors and adds emphasis to the fact that many other people other than the locals find it an in-convenience & sometimes very dangerous. The problem occurs every week-end in addition to the Bank Holidays.

Dear Editor,The film In Love With Alma Cogan which was written & directed by Tony Britten and produced by Anwen Rees Myers & Katja Mordaunt, has received a great deal of enthusiastic audience feedback. We are certain that a new model of making truly independent British films that sit more comfortably outside the rather narrow programming of the multiplexes is an achievable ambition. The DVD of In Love With Alma Cogan is now available, price 12.00 + 1.50 p&p from: www.inlovewithalmacogan.co.uk and several North Norfolk outlets, listed on our website, but we do better financially if you buy direct from us and the sooner we get to recoupment on this film, the sooner we can make the next one.If you saw our film and didnt like it, you have probably already stopped reading this! If you liked it, perhaps you would enjoy watching it again at your convenience when it sells to television it almost certainly wont be available on demand. Maybe you could spread the word to your friends and family via social networking or even just good old chat!We are a genuinely local film company, based in Holt, making work with the high production values that ensure a worldwide response. Most of our films are shot and edited locally; we only go to London when there is technical equipment that we cant source in Norfolk. We use local crew whenever we can and when our actors say here in a Norfolk accent they say hair not ear! With your readers help, we can afford to keep making films in Nth Norfolk and bringing them to the ever enlarging network of village screens and film clubs. With best wishes,Helen CogmanMarketing Co-ordinator Holt, Norfolk.

Dear Philip,Re Crab Tales, Issue 012. The cartoon of Mun & Little Tankie crossing Gold Park, in Mundesley, to catch the bus amidst a minefield of plastic bags of dog poop would be funny if there wasnt some truth in it.Why is it that some people seem unable to clear up after their dogs have made a mess in a public place?, one has to wonder what sort of homes they come from.Of course we all know its only the minority who are the culprits and as usual the majority suffer because of it.Janet MunroMundesley-On-Sea.

Dear Sir, Having lived in the area for over 30 years and a frequent user of the Felbrigg Rd. & Holt Rd. junction, I would like to put forward a cheaper and alternative alteration to this junction. In my opinion a mini roundabout would cause more delay and considering the poor driving skills of some when negoiating this type of roundabout, more problems than it solves. The main problem appears to be drivers wanting to turn onto Holt Road cannot proceed due to vehicles waiting to turn right into Cromer. Why not make the road wider, the verge is wide enough, and increase the width of the acceleration lane, accompany this with new road markings to ensure those wishing to turn right stay in lane. This would allow drivers to turn left onto the Holt Road without hindrance and would be a far cheaper alternative and just as effective.Dave PaffettNorthrepps

Dear Mr. Keddell,I write in response to a letter in Issue 010 of The Crab Tales from Maureen Leggett of Trimingham, in which she refers to a Norfolk knitting group giving rise to rumour and criticism of the knitting produced for parcels sent to troops overseas. We at Norfolk Knitters have been asked to knit hats for a very specific purpose. They are for troops to wear whilst on patrol. The RBL have requested the hats are knitted in 100% wool to reduce the risk of personal injury through fire, explosion, etc. where acrylic fibres would melt. The wool band should be sent with the knitted item.Norfolk Knitters most certainly wouldnt dream of criticising another organisation who is obviously working so hard for charity, as we ourselves do so much for many different charities, at home and overseas, with our 1060 members and 33 knitting groups across the county. There are obviously two very specific purposes for items sent to our troops and whether they are hats for active service or gloves, scarves & hats put into parcels for the soldiers to wear as he or she wishes, we should all carry on doing our best whilst our troops require us to do so.I would ask that if Ms. Leggett has sent her letter to any other publication(s) she contacts them to explain the confusion that seems to have arisen.Maureen MaleedFor and on behalf of Norfolk Knitters.www.norfolkknitters.org.uk

retained the idea females should really not enter their hallowed shop)The other walked past me saying oh the yards are closed now no apology or suggestion of where I might try!!Being resourceful I drove up to Jewsons, now after 5pm, walked in, asked the young man if he could sell me a roll of damp proofing? No problem he said we are closed but I will put it on tomorrows takingsGuess where Ill be doing all my DIY shopping in Cromer in future and I suggest others follow my lead, especially if you have the audacity to be female and are buying DIY itemsWe had a very sucessful book sale at the Pilgrim Shelter last month raising nearly 50, thanks to all who supported us.Regards Liz KingTrimingham

From The Editor:This is indeed a must see film that everyone who saw it, at Mundesleys Coronation Hall really enjoyed. I would go as far as saying this film was one, if not the, best films that the Mundesley Film Club has shown to date. See details of future films being shown in Mundesley on the Special Events page of this issue. PK

By all accounts the weekend of 17th -19th of May, was really enjoyed by one and all, particularly by this young lady (on left)Lily Oliver, aged 8 next month & (below) by Mandy Oakland from Norwich.Evington Lawns in Cromer, was full of very jolly folk having fun and learning how to cook & prepare sandwiches and all kinds of crab dishes.By all accounts the 3rd Crab and Lobster Festival was indeed a successful weekendenjoyed by everyone involved as well as all those who braved the weather.

4 Best North Norfolks Award-Winning BeachesKeep Britain Tidy announced that Nth Norfolk has 4 award-winning resort beaches, offering visitors great facilities, a litter free and safe environment and, in the case of Blue Flag awards, meeting the highest international water quality requirements. Flying the flag for North Norfolks seaside resorts this year are: Cromer, Sheringham & Sea Palling. All three are continuing the standard of excellence that was recognised by the awards of Blue Flag status last year. East Runton beach has also been awarded the new Seaside Award, recognising its high standards of beach management. Cllr John Lee, Member for Environment, said: We are delighted that 3 of North Norfolks Blue Flag resort beaches have retained their awards this year and that East Runton has achieved the new Seaside Award. This, following comments we received in the Good Beach Guide, confirms the area as a wonderfully clean, tidy & safe place to live & visit, with some of the best resorts anywhere. Five Nth Norfolk beaches, these four, plus Mundesley beach, were recently awarded the highly sought after Recommended

status in the Marine Conservation Societys Good Beach Guide, which demands stringent water quality standards. To qualify for a prestigious Blue Flag resort beaches must achieve a high standard of bathing water quality, something thats regularly monitored. But thats not all. The beaches must also show high standards of environmental education & information, such as clear signs, beach-related activities and events; environmental management, such as clean and accessible toilets and beaches, with regular beach cleans; and safety bathers at all NNDC Blue Flag beaches are protected by RNLI Lifeguards. This year Blue Flag entrants had to meet an even stricter water quality standard to qualify, covering quality over the past 4 years. Unfortunately, because of a low quality reading in 2010, which was caused by a storm surge, this meant that Mundesley beach could not be considered for a Blue Flag this year. However, facilities there remain excellent, as has been the water quality since 2010, as is shown by its current Recommended rating from the Good Beach Guide.

It was a great success and raised a grand sum of 678 from the ticket sales and raffle. The food for the Ploughmans Supper was generously donated by various shops & supermarkets in the Town & John Starling, Headof The Bure Valley School, whoallowed us to use the school hall free of charge. The Raffle prizes were also donated by shops in the Town. This was a tremendous community effort & the Committee thank all of the above for their generous support. The Committee hope to organise other fundraising events during the coming year so please look out for these and support us generously if you can.All the monies raised goes to make Aylsham Town Centre and the Streets in the Town look bright & cheerful over the Christmas Period.J.K.EIphick. Dear Editor,Im a working mum living in Cromer and am standing as an independent candidate in Cromer Town Council by-election on June 13th. I would like to be elected to the Town Council so that I can give somethingback to the town that gives me so much.Currently, I am Secretary of the Friends of Cromer Academy, where my daughters study. Before this, I was active in the Friends of Cromer Junior School and played a key role in The Skate Park Campaign. For seven years, I worked for the charity Volunteering England, alongside Age UK, WRVS & the NHS, to improve the quality of life for older people.I have been a volunteer bucket collector for the Carnival and working with young volunteers in North Lodge Park for the Jubilee celebrations. I also trained as an Eastern Region Education Speaker for the RNLI and was actively involved in one of the Cromer Girl Guide units.I would like to help support older residents, those who struggle to find jobs & training opportunities and I would like to help support our local traders, in this tough economic climate. If your readers would consider voting for me I would be honoured.Kind regards,Penny Gee

The Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) initiative is administered by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO). The FLAG programme has been structured to deliver up to thirty projects by the end of 2014, for which monies from the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) of up to 1.28 million is available. The North Norfolk FLAG is part of a Europe wide initiative which attracts funding from the EFF. There are six FLAG programmes currently in operation in England, and the overall aim of the North Norfolk FLAG is to contribute to a sustainable future for the North Norfolk fishery through the delivery of a broad range of projects and interventions. The Nth Norfolk FLAG has made good progress over the last few months, and several projects have recently been signed off by the MMO. These projects included a key location for the proposed four-community Heritage & Visitor Centre and Personal Locator Beacons for the Nth Norfolk Fishermens Society. The latest approvals bring the total monies for MMO approved schemes in North Norfolk to 436K. Further applications of 478k have already been submitted to the MMO for evaluation, and there are schemes

under development which have a total estimated value of up to 950k.Nth Norfolk Business Forum is delivering the FLAG Fisheries and Communities Engagement Programme, which is designedto promote the activities of the N.N. FLAG and bring forward projects for consideration and evaluation by the local FLAG Committee.North Norfolk FLAG Chairman & local fisherman Cllr John Lee commented: Although we have made good progress over the last few months we are still looking for innovative projects, and the FLAG Animator Ian Groves will be pleased to hear from anyone thinking of making an application.

He added: It was particularly pleasing to see an apprenticeship scheme come before the last FLAG Committee. If approved by the MMO this could bring up to 18 new trainees to boats & ancillary fishery businesses. Over the next four to six weeks it is hoped that it will be possible for a major infrastructure improvement application to be completed for detailed consideration by the FLAG Committee.

Thanks to Ian Groves, from North Norfolk Business

YOUR NEXT CRAB TALES COMES OUT

    ON JUNE 22nd

Above: Watching the kids with the two coaches on hand was not only fun, but did remind me of all I had forgotten

about tennis i.e. postion and following through.

Open Day For Cromers Tennis & Squash ClubOn Sunday May 19th, I joined a good many people who turned up to check out Cromers most active and popular club on the Norwich Road, on the town side of the High School.I was made very welcome and given a tour of all the facilites and must say that I was extremely impressed with everything that was going on that day.The courts are in wonderful condition, all 14 of them. 10 are grass, 2 are OMNI courts &2 are LTA proformance courts.

There are also 2 squash courts, a couple of table tennis courts and a friendly bar which overlooks the main grass courts.Watching the mix of chlidren playing under the watchful eyes of two of the coaches, you could not but be impressed by the whole operation that is very much this user friendly and jolly club.Without going into reams of details about membership costs per year, I would say that for such a high quality club that by all accounts is so well set up and organised, it certainly seems to be good value for money. My advice to anyone who missed their open day is to either phone the club on : 01263 513 741 or pop in and have a good look around.Or visit : www.cromerltsa.co.ukFor all the detailsSee you there. This Years VEO Art & Craft ExhibitionOn Thursday May 23rd, I attended this event, as I usually do and while looking around the various art works, I took some photographs to go with some positive comments. Despite my high regard for the voluntary work of the Cromer VEO, I have to say that the turn out was very poor, with very few pieces of work on showaround the hall this year.On the positive side it is always a pleasure to see and hear Andreas Yiasimi (pictured below) giving his opening address, with Tony Shipp beside him, but the small amount of art works submitted and of good people present was sad to say the least. More Time In The Garden

It is time to retire and spend more time in that garden of yours Linda Watson. After 23 years behind the counter of the Mundesley Post Office it is time to pack it all in and take time in your garden.According to my neighbour Jean, who also works in the Post Office, you are, as well as being so well organised behind the counter, a brilliant gardener in the village. At 1pm on May 25th, Linda walked home to her garden, next to the Coronation Hall, after staff & friends wished her all the very best.Linda, is very much part and parcel of The Magic That Is Mundesley. I wish her well in her retirement. PK

After just over an hour the decision of the judges was announced by Tony Shipp MBE, with this years winners. The Princess was Daisy Reynolds aged 7 & the Prince was Oliver Fraser aged 9. (pictured right) PK

How The Greek.. ...........Bailout Package Works. It is a slow day in a little Greek Village, the rain is beating down, the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit. On this particular day a rich German tourist is driving through the village, stops at the local hotel and lays a 100 note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night. The owner gives him some keys and, as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs, the hotelier grabs the 100 note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the 100 note and runs down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the 100 note and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed & fuel. The guy at the Farmers' Co-op takes the note and runs to pay his drinks bill at the taverna. The publican slips the money along to the local prostitute drinking at the bar, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer him "services" on credit. The hooker then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the hotel owner

    01692 406 818Laundry Loke Estate, North Walshamwww.northwalshamstorage.co.uk

with the 100 note. The hotel proprietor then places the 100 note back on the counter so the rich traveller will not suspect anything. At that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, picks up the 100 note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and leaves town. No one produced anything. No one earned anything.

However, the whole village is now out of debt and looking to the future with a lot more optimism. And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how the bailout package works

Thanks to Peter Ellis for this.

Funding Home Care Part 1 By Anna Lloyd Legal Executive with Hayes + StorrAs is often the case with social care, the current system of charges for home care is the product of small scale step-by-step development, rather than any rational planning. It is therefore extraordinarily complex. Social care is means-tested. However, there are different charging systems for residential care and for care provided to people in their own homes. With residential care, if a person who meets Local Authority (LA) eligibility criteria can afford to pay for it themselves and is able to arrange it or has someone who is able and willing to do it for them, it is deemed to be otherwise available to them. The LA therefore does not have a legal duty to arrange residential care. The duty to arrange care and support for someone living in their own home is assessed differently. Providing the person meets eligibility criteria and is assessed as requiring care in their own home, the LA has a duty to arrange it and also to ensure that the care is meeting the persons needs, regardless of his or her means. The LA can however charge for the support it arranges. This includes domestic assistance, personal care, day care, and other services, including transport. Charging systems for residential care, on the one hand, and for services for people who are still living in their own homes, on the other hand, also differ. Charges for residential care are determined by national guidance, but charges for care provided in peoples homes, or in a community setting, such as day care centres, are determined locally; although they are subject to national guidance. The law states that a person must not be required to pay more for a service than it is reasonably practical for them to do so. Means-testing is not a relevant factor with home care, until it comes to charging; the LA must assess a person for the home care and support they need. The LA should not investigate someones income and assets until they have reached a decision to offer home care support to the person. This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any

omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

If you require advice on this matter please contact Anna at our office in Sheringham on 01263 825 959. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our Sheringham office on 01263 825 959 or email [email protected]

No Doubt You Know .......how important it is to stay active, even though you have chronic pain. The less you do, the weaker you may become, and when your body is weak, you tire more easily and be less able to engage in life. Weaker muscles are also more prone to pain flare-ups. Weak and tight muscles hurt more than do strong and stretched muscles. But what happens when your chronic pain condition has left you so debilitated and weak that even the slightest activity sends the pain levels soaring? The answer is to utilise the art of pacing. Increasing your level of activity is an important part of chronic pain management; pacing is a way to increase activity very gradually over several weeks. It has been shown to reduce the frequency and intensity of pain episodes and to help people with pain to do more. Many chronic pain sufferers are naturally far less active than they used to be and as a result, you may have noticed yourself trapped in a cycle of boom and bust with activity and exercise. An example of this is someone who wakes up one day and feel they are having a good day and so decide to catch up on things while pain levels are manageable. Later that evening the symptoms are flared-up again, resulting in extended rest and bad days. Eventually it settles and the pattern is repeated again when they feel a bit better.

Another pacing problem is around those day to day chores that need to be done.

If there is a day when you feel better the temptation is to try and do everything all at once because you just dont know when the next opportunity will be.

A third approach is the never give in attitude. Refusing to let the pain beat you and stop you from doing what you want and need to do. This is when it feels you are at war with your pain and you are not going to let it win; the result is harmful on both a short and long-term basis.

With all these ways of approaching activity, it is followed by more pain and for some more inactivity follows as you try and settle it down the boom and bust cycle. Your baseline level of fitness never really improves if anything it gets worse. Repeated flare ups of pain lead to more feelings of loss of control, anxiety and isolation as the cycle of chronic pain continues and even worsens.A pacing problem is basing your activity level on how you feel (doing more when you feel good and less when you feel bad). Good pacing involves basing your activity level on pre-set reasonable goals not on your level of pain. To remedy a pacing problem, you will need a Pacing Plan that will help you to gradually increase how much you do of an activity, slowly and safely. The Pacing Plan will be published in ournext issue

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong. 5. To steal from many is research. 10. Buses stop in bus stations. Trains stop in train stations. On my desk is a work station. 11. I thought I wanted a career. Turns out I just wanted paychecks. 12. In filling out an application, where it says, 'In case of emergency, notify:' I put 'DOCTOR.' 13. I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you. 14. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy. 15. Behind every successful man is his woman. Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman. 16. A clear conscience is the sign of a fuzzy memory.17. You do not need a parachute to skydive.
